  1. It looks like the evil company Verisign has poisoned the DNS servers of the world and redirects everything that hasn't been registered to their site. What this means, for those that aren't up on DNS and stuff like that, is that if you type in www.coxc.net by accident rather than www.cox.net, you will get an advertisement for Verisign. This also means that many of the anti-spam programs are broken, because any domain name will now work. In the past, if someone sent you spam from a domain that didn't exist, like spamboy@coxc.net it would be flagged as spam and deleted (if you have the right program.) Now, VeriSign has broken that. Another thing they now have the ability to do is to harvest information about you. If you type in the wrong domain name by accident, they will know it. If you send a private email and type in the wrong address, they will be able to read that email. This is an abuse of the internet, as well as highly criminal. I've emailed several large companies that I could think of (one is my example of coxc.net for Cox Communications) to inform their legal department that VeriSign has infringed on their trademarks. Hopefully, enough people will bring lawsuits against VeriSign as well as complaints to ICANN, that this evil company will be put out of business permanently. For those that don't know, this is just one item in a long line of criminal activity by this company. They also trick people into paying them for their domain names, they hijack domain names from rightful owners, and many other bad things.
  2. Personally, I think El Mariachi has the best story line, but the effects are definitely low budget. Still, it's a great film and it helped me become more fluent in Spanish. Desperado was good, but I agree it doesn't have much in common with El Mariachi. The guy is supposed to be the same, but you can't go from a Parker Lewis lookalike tragic accidental hero to an Antonio Banderas badass killer that quickly. The main thing that bothers me for some reason is how unrealistic the movies are. El Mariachi could have been some podunk redneck town in Mexico, but the places of Desperado and OUATIM don't exist in that sense. Mexico has about as much a chance for a general taking over by killing an unguarded president as the U.S. has. Mexico also has paved streets in most of the areas that are not mountains and such. I just saw their portrayal of Mexico as bad as if you combined the West Wing with Deliverance to show how the U.S. is a backwater country where the president plays banjo all day and rapes fat guys in the woods.
  3. That's sort of like how I use beer as a chaser when I'm out drinking. Anyway, habaneros are indeed very hot, but I'm pretty sure there are hotter out there. I'm not sure what they put in the really spicy thai food but it's hotter than habanero. Also, I've had some in Mexico that look like little orange or red berries. Those things are vicious, but I have no idea what they are. You can basically break it, and drop it into a bowl of soup and it will be very spicy. Oh, and another idea that I like with chinese food (especially the mongolian barbecue places) is to put pineapple in to be cooked, along with the hot sauce. For some reason the hot sauces that they use and the pineapple go really well together and make a delicious flavor. Also, what is with the LCM thing? Did he really think that?
  4. I was going to rent that yesterday but Blockbuster was out of it. We got "Old School" instead, which is hilarious and full of bathroom humor.
  5. Does anyone know how to set up a favicon for a site? I believe I've done it correctly, but it still doesn't show up for me. Any points to good information about it (I've already tried what I've found on google) would be appreciated. It looks like it would be easy, but it's not.
  6. I've driven both in Atlanta and Los Angeles during morning rush hour traffic. I think that Atlanta has more nascar wannabes who get ....ed off too quickly and drive recklessly and cause accidents. In Los Angeles, the traffic sucks but you have less idiots driving crazy. Of course, I think the worst traffic is in semi-rural cities like Amarillo, Oklahoma City, Little Rock, etc. Those places are full of people who would normally drive a tractor in a 400 acre field, so they have no idea how to drive on a road, especially with other people there. They go 20 under the speed limit in the fast lane on the interstate, and refuse to get over when you come up behind them. They weave into other lanes like they've been drinking, but the truth is that they're just too stupid to drive within the lines.
  7. Although I'm in my mid 20's, I like to watch some of the gross and gory stuff. South Park is one of my favorite shows, not so much for the toilet humor but because they seem to have a lot of interesting things to say. They are a parody of life and they generally end up insulting everyone at some point but they generally have a moral to the story and it makes sense. Of course, their political commentary lines up with my beliefs most of the time, but that's just a secondary thing. I also like shows like Law and Order, because it's interesting for some reason. It deals with murder all the time and other bad things, but it's still something I like to watch. Anyway, I guess I just feel that there are quite a few channels on TV, so there is something for everyone. This particularly holds true if you have DirecTV or digital cable. I can turn on something like the History channel or one of the various science channels and always find something good and interesting. Perhaps you all just need to look at different channels. By the way, I watched part of "The Mullets" last night and I was incredibly dissapointed. Rather than being a show about some rude, mullet-headed, PBR drinking, Camaro driving freaks, it was about some idiots that were really nice guys. People with mullets are amusing, but it's the attitude they have more than the haircut. As far as Tivo goes, I love those types of devices. I have a ReplayTV because they allow filesharing, work over ethernet, etc. but both should work about the same way.
  8. I've heard that beauty is definied by the Fibbonaci sequence, when measuring faces and such a certain way. I don't know how that works out, because I only understand how the Fibbonaci ratio works into stuff like pinecones and sunflowers. Still, if anyone like Zixar can elaborate I'd appreciate it.
  9. A slightly different topic, but if you'd like to eliminate web popups, get Popup Stopper. If you click here and go down to the free version you can download it easily. It works by blocking all popups unless you hold down the shift key, for those situations where you do need to allow another window to open. Of course, the solution I went with instead is to use a better browser than IE. Right now, I'm using Phoenix (which was renamed Firebird) which is a scaled down version of Mozilla, which is what Netscape was based on. However, it's not crap, unlike Netscape. It gives you tabbed browsing so you can have multiple sites open in one window, it automatically does popup blocking if you want, and it is more configurable than IE.
  10. ZoneAlarm is great for what it does, but it is INSANELY slow. Anyway, check out http://www.tweak3d.net/tweak/winstartupnew/
  11. I want to use an Apple. I don't know why though. Steve Jobs is an idiot, Apples are too expensive, and their mice suck. Their OS doesn't have much software, and their UI is probably more flashy than it needs to be. But at the same time, something just seems to be cool about it. Bah...I've been spending too much time with the wrong crowd I guess.
  12. I showed it to my wife, but she didn't get mad. I guess it's because she doesn't have reason to think I'd suggest we go there. I think any women that get offended probably would fit in ok there.
  13. I'm hoping that The Animatrix will make it onto Disc 2 of the boxed set of The Matrix Reloaded.
  14. I can loosely tie it into religion in general. This will probably contain some SPOILERS so don't read it if you haven't seen both movies. Spoiler space Spoiler space Spoiler space Spoiler space Spoiler space The new Matrix movie added more depth to the matrix itself, and I think it portrays life in a cult more than anything. Morpheus has so much faith in the Oracle and what she has to say, even though it turns out that she is just using them for the goals of the machines. Neo meets up with Kernel Sanders who I guess is supposed to be like either God or Satan, and gives Neo two choices. Naturally, Neo chooses the one that is unexplored, much to the chagrin of the master of the 11 herbs and spices. That was sort of a "mark and avoid" moment of sorts, because it appears to have broken the system or "religion" that the machines have set up for mankind. At that moment I felt like they have truly awakened, as they no longer have the same sense of purpose. Neo is no longer predestined to be "The One" but instead is just a guy who may have more abilities than those around him. I see the vulnerability as a more honest look at life. The once messiah Neo and his prophet Morpheus discover that they were following lies. I think that the movies are taking a little more Buddhist approach to things than they are Christian, though. Even then, the philosophy is an afterthought. It's just added to make it more cool and mysterious. It's the same reason that they all wear sunglasses inside a building, at night. I expect that we can't really judge the plot until the last part of the trilogy is released, then we will understand more of what is going on. However, it's all just entertainment, so I don't expect to be enlightened by a movie whose main character started out in "Bill and Ted" movies.
  15. I saw it, and I was not really dissapointed as I had no expectations going into the movie. I do think it's better than most of the other stuff in theaters right now, which isn't saying much. Still, if someone wants to go to the movies just to get out of the house I don't think it's too bad of a choice. There's decent action, and it's much better than all the Batman movies (since the first one in the 90's.)
  16. Actually, they will probably rewrite it to remove things that contradict with their current teachings. They seem to be fond of this, making new editions of old TWI books, telling people to throw away sections of their WAP syllibi, etc.
  17. Yeah, we have a dog from them now, which is the one we were looking at from their site. She's been a handful, but we're all settling in with each other nicely now I think. :)--> Thanks again for the info.
  18. It probably won't work too well for that, actually. I have the linksys wireless access point and three computers using it (well, only one laptop at a time since I have one laptop card, and I haven't gotten my desktop linux box to work wireless yet) and it does seem to drop off significantly through some walls. It's hard to explain though. I have the WAP in the living room, and in my bedroom it works fine. The second bedroom(my office) seems to break down every once in a while, but when I take the laptop back to the living room or the other bedroom it works fine. The living room is between the bedrooms, so I can only think that something in the wall is blocking the signal. So, I am not sure that it will work all that well for sharing with your neighbors. Interference can be caused by anything from something in the walls to someone having the right type of cordless phone, so it's hard to say how well it will work until you try it. Also, you'll want to read up on security too. Basically, there is nearly no security with wireless LANs, but there are a few things you can do to put yourself at less risk. The linksys one, for example, lets you put in passwords needed to connect to the network (not very reliable though) and it lets you only allow certain MAC addresses on as well. Anyway, I have had the wireless stuff for about a year now, so if you have more questions I can answer them too. My network is probably similar to what you want to set up, although you would get one device to do everything where I have three.
  19. I had been wanting to leave for a while, but never did because of my family. The reasons I left are very similar to Lindy's reasons, minus the dancing part. Anyway, what gave me a green light to get out was basically that my parents stopped being such waybots (for a time, at least) and were on the verge of leaving themselves. When I figured they wouldn't cut contact with me for leaving TWI, I left.
  20. Congratulations. Even though it seems like a phone call, it did take courage to stand up for yourself rather than pretending to agree with TWI logic. Hopefully your friend sees your example, and when the time comes for him to make the decision, he can choose wisely about his future in TWI as well. Anyway, congratulations again. It took me months after leaving before I told my family that were in. The people from my old fellowship don't even know why I left, and I had only talked to one after I left because he cold called me as well (around Christmas-time of 2001, when I left around August 2001.)
  21. A serious prediction. I have a feeling that it will have something to do with Atlantis. A humorous idea is: Indiana Jones and the Scorpion King's Wrath.
  22. I took my wife to see this over the weekend. Personally, I can't help but think of the urban legend about Richard "Gerbil Man" Gere, nor the fact that he looks like a non-bald Captain Picard, but that is just one distraction. I'm no fan of musicals, and didn't realize that this was a musical. My wife enjoyed the movie, I was just hoping it would end. I tried to put it into the perspecive of the main character being delusional and always fantasizing about music, but that didn't work too well either. The bottom line: Women will love this movie, and guys should do what I used to do and sneak a bottle of rum into the theatre to mix with the $5 bucket of Coke.
  23. Well, al Qaeda can be loosely translated as "The Way" in Arabic. I just figured people traumatized by either organization will take a while to get over it, if ever.
