That seems to be what satori is all about. If you've read many of my most controversial posts about religion, I do not like it, and I do not participate. However, he's so offensive about it that I can't help but offer up opposition to his condemnation of Catholics or whatever group of people he chooses to hate each week. I argue with people enough here, but I don't go around saying things like, "Anyone who supports Bush is a mass murderer" even though I think it's dumb to support him. I don't think that it makes every person who doesn't line up with my way of thinking to be "evil." The problem as I've observed before is that some people still act as full of hate as they did while in TWI. Unfortunately, I don't know of any real way around it. I myself have anger issues, probably related in part to growing up in TWI. I'm not sure what anyone else's excuse is, but it's expected to see people who still follow the doctrine of LCM when it comes to groups of people.

Personally, when I see you attacking broad groups of people like how you have attacked all Catholics here, I like to respond in putting just as much condemnation back on you as an individual. First of all, there is no policy of condoning child molestation in the catholic church. Your analogy is completely worthless there and is just an attempt to get people's emotions up and stir up anti-catholic hatred. Instead, we all pretty much just hate pedophiles and don't fall for your tricks. Secondly, what you said was: You were not ambiguous. If you said that "any Catholic who sends money to Rome may end up paying salaries of people that molest children" then it could be realistic and reasonable. Instead, you said that they are either directly or indirectly funding "institutionalized" pedophilia. There was no ambiguity, and you left no room for possible innocence, and you set up the catholic church as an organization that spends money on pedophilia and that's about it. You didn't talk about their charity work, you didn't talk about any of the good they've done, or even any of the other bad that they've done. You said that if anyone gives money to the catholic church they are funding pedophilia. Perhaps your attention span to your own words is too limited for you to realize what you have said, but you can't just backtrack on this as you would like to. You've made your statement, no need to shy away from it now that people are calling you on it. You hate catholics, so be proud of yourself for it and don't deny your hatred. Perhaps you should go to school so you don't have to be confused by such advanced concepts as "words", maybe even "sentences" and hopefully by the time you've been learning for a good decade or so, you just might be able to grasp what a "paragraph" is. Yes, there are leaders in the Catholic church that are corrupt, there are leaders who molest kids. Those people are bad, but that does not make every single one guilty or bad. So if I wear my badge from work, go out and run a red light on my way to the office, you think the cops should send the ticket to my boss? I suspect you wouldn't, but even so, why would my boss have to come out and defend the company I work for because I ran a red light? Granted, there is a huge difference in seriousness, which I suspect you will try to use to point out how "bad" I am for comparing pedophilia to running a red light, which I only did to point out how things work with a crime that is not as emotionally charged, and not a direct comparison as you would undoubtably read into it. Nobody should have to come out and make a clear statement that child molestation is wrong, because it's clear that the normal view of society is that it's wrong. Very very few people would disagree that it's wrong to molest kids. Why do we need to demand people to make speeches about how bad it is when we all already know that? You're free to believe that, but I find it hard to believe that an old guy in his 80's with Parkinsons and a host of other illnesses was in charge of anything. I seriously doubt he was running the Catholic church for years, and instead let others make decisions in his name. Either way though, it doesn't matter anymore because he's dead. How far removed from a crime do you have to be to be not guilty? I'm sure you got your attitude from being in The Way but in the real world, people don't get prosecuted for being ok with a person who was ok with a person who was protecting a pedophile. If you want to call for the death penalty for molesting priests I'm right there with you, if you want to throw Bernard Law in jail as a facilitator, I'm there with you, but beyond that it's hard to really make a case against anyone. If you really believe this, then you're no better than a terrorist. Al Qaeda attacked us on 9/11 because their followers believed that all Americans were guilty because we allow our government to murder innocents in the middle east. They blamed us for the deaths of all those kids in Iraq who failed to get the food or medicine that they needed because of the embargo. They blame us for helping Israel continue to occupy land that they don't own, and kill Palestinians for simply existing. Do I feel responsible for the deaths of innocent kids in Iraq, because I am an American? No. I didn't make the choice to harm anyone. Am I responsible for any innocent deaths of Palestinians or Israelis because my government would rather sell weapons to them than work towards a solution? No, I have no control over that, and I never said it was ok. If Usama bin Laden is wrong about blaming all Americans for the harm our government has done, then you are just as wrong for blaming all Catholics for the harm a few priests have done. Yes, their crimes are immense, but you have to put it squarely on the shoulders of those who are guilty, not on everyone around them for simply existing. You are the type who stirs **** up to lead to things like the Salem witch hunts, the Oklahoma City bombing, or even 9/11. When you blame an entire group of people for the sins of a few among them, then you are a bigot, and are trying to be just as evil as the ones you blame.

Sounds like pretty much every Christian leader there is. Every Christian group has had sex controversies, whether pedophilia, rape, incest, or whatever. Also, I am not saying this to single out Christianity as the only source of paedophiles, it's just that I don't know how many Buddhist child molesters exist, for example. Realistically it's likely that every religion and non-religion has an equal number of child molesters. However, when you have things like teachers, priests, scout leaders, etc. they are in a position where they could easily get away with molesting children, so those types of positions attract people who want to rape kids.

I brought this up with my wife, and she explained it in such a way that I can understand, even if I don't agree with it. The apostle Paul was a mass murderer, and there were many horrible "sinners" who later asked forgiveness and became high-ranking members of Jesus' group, or in the case of Paul, leader of all Christians. Jesus taught forgiveness, which to Catholics mean that this guy should be forgiven if he is sorry for his role in the abuse. Sure it's not sane, but forgiveness is a core doctrine of Christianity. Also, the Pope moved this guy to a position where he would not be able to shuffle around abusers. Ultimately, I would have preferred to see this guy thrown in jail or something, but I'm not a religious person.

Lindy, I know *exactly* how you feel. Not physically with the missing chunk of finger, but with your parents not coming to your aid or missing something important for TWI. Crap like that is why I do believe that TWI brainwashes people. If you must know, both of my parents drove by me when I had a car accident once...I forget if they were on their way to a class or just a fellowship, but I was there on the side of the road with the car that rear ended me, and a cop car behind us. The car I used to drive is really unique, to a point where I won't describe it here because if any WayGB want to find out who I am, that would be an easy way to do it. Anyway, I see my parents drive by me, just slowing down enough to look before speeding on to their TWI destination like good little waybots. Afterwards I asked my mom why they didn't stop, and she made up a lame excuse about how they thought I was getting a ticket or something. Nevermind the fact that there was another car between mine and the cop's car, and that the other car was totalled. So, I know how you feel. If someone is in TWI, then they are completely unreliable. Their dedication to family is about the least amount that is humanly possible. It's not really their fault though. They got suckered into an organization that prays on people and destroys families.

I can only draw upon my own experiences and the observations I've made, but as far as I can tell Michael Schiavo was dedicated to his wife, and did all that he could to try to heal her until the point that the doctors told him that Terri's brain was gone. In a situation like that, I'd probably do the same. Him falling in love with another woman happened after he had made the decision that Terri's body should not be artificially kept alive anymore, and the reason it has dragged on for so many years is because of the court cases. The problem is that medically speaking, there was no hope whatsoever of a recovery. Michael Schiavo got medical training and took her to experimental treatments to see what could be done, but at the point that her brain started to disintigrate, there was no hope. That is night and day though, and I think that the ignorance of medicine on the part of the majority of people is probably why people like yourself were so opposed to this. There are different parts of the brain that control different functions. The part of the brain that was left in Terri Schiavo was the brain stem, which only controls things like your heartbeat, blinking, etc. It is not capable of consciousness or thought. We know this for a fact, there is no question in that any more than there is any question that the heart pumps blood. The MRIs showed that all that was left of her brain was the stem, and that the rest was replaced by fluid. You can not grow back a portion of your brain, although if it is a slight injury your brain has backups in different parts and you can recover by one of those backups being activated instead of the injured part. However, in massive brain loss like Terri Schiavo went through, there's no backups or anything that can happen for her to recover, and there is no way that any thoughts could occur. I'm not a doctor, but I know about this stuff. I have studied it a lot and am somewhat knowledgeable, and I have good reasons to know about it rather than just a passing interest. The MRIs showed that her brain was gone, and her flat EEG pointed out that no thoughts were occurring. If I were in his shoes, I would not turn my wife's body over to my in-laws so they could keep her body alive against her wishes. I may have different morals than you so our definitions of "life" may not match. However, I don't think that you would want your wife to suffer, we just have different definitions of suffering.

It is barbaric that they do not give this to death row inmates. You are completely wrong, and if you can't even grasp this basic concept, then you understand nothing about this case. Michael Schiavo carried out what he felt were the wishes of his wife. He brought it to the courts because he felt that it would bring about an end to the conflict between him and the parents so that experts could take a look and help them decide. No, they are Americans just like you or I, and they ruled in favor of what was right. Just because you and maybe 3% of the nation wanted to keep her body alive unnaturally doesn't mean that you speak for the American people. If you don't want to abide by the laws of our country, you are free to convince the rest of us that you are right and that we should change our laws. If you want to sit back and talk about how we should turn the nation into a theocracy based on American Taliban beliefs like Pat Robertson's opinion, there are plenty of nations in the middle east that might be a little more appropriate for you. Then why are you trying to butt in with the personal lives of the Schiavos and Schindlers? Why do you want to pass laws that interfere with people's choice for life and death, or the rights of the family to decide whether or not to continue life support? The only reason they failed here is because overzealous religious politicians encouraged the mental illnesses of the Schindlers and tried to take advantage of it to force our nation to adopt their religious beliefs as law, and especially tried to use this as a backdoor to end legal and safe abortion, as johniam pointed out. "They" meaning the media and religious leaders, since they are the ones that inflamed this and turned it into a media circus.

I have a wife, and I love her, and would not keep her body alive like Terri Schiavo's was, especially when my wife has told me throughout this whole thing that she would not want to live like that. My wife believes that when you die, you go to heaven/hell and so to be dead in the mind but have your body kept alive unnaturally like Terri Schiavo was, is torture. Not only that, but there was 0% chance of her recovering. She couldn't grow a new brain to be able to live. So in response to your insulting question, I ask you. Do you love your wife? Would you keep her body alive unnaturally after her mind had died just so you don't have to face reality? I understand and I feel sorry for Terri's parents as well as her husband and the rest of her family. They all suffered, and I can empathize with all of them. However, the pity I have for the Schindlers does not mean that I agree with them, and it does not mean that I do not think that they were delusional.

Depending on which tragedy you are referring to, there are a few things. If you are referring to preventing people like Terri Schiavo from being let go, I'd suggest writing a living will. If you don't want it to happen to you, then write one. That's the best you can do, and you can't make these decisions for anyone else. We can't make laws based on opinions or irrational emotional states based on bad information and propaganda. As far as I can tell, the law worked fine here. Michael Schiavo could have had her tube pulled much earlier than this, but he gave the parents a chance at first because he wanted to make sure he was doing the right thing, and felt that a guardian ad lidem would be the best way to go. The court ruled in favor of him rather than the parents. However, the parents tried every legal move that they could come up with, which dragged the case on. Most people would not do something like this because the majority would not want to keep the bodies of their children alive, and they would not contradict the husband who knows her better. The problem in this specific case is that the parents seemed to suffer from some sort of mental illness, or at least the father. This caused a lot of problems and in the name of neutrality, nobody tried to get them to face reality. This sort of thing happens every day, although in most cases the spouse and the children agree with each other. The biggest problem is that this was considered "news" and more important than the potential thousands dead in Indonesia. It is a tragedy that even though the vast majority of Americans would do what Michael Schiavo did, the right-wing media showed the radical religious groups non-stop and treated their propaganda as fact. What got even worse though was when religious leaders, as well as certain Republicans like Jeb Bush, Tom Delay, and others were willing to break the law to pursue what they wanted to do. This could be when Jeb Bush sent state police to confront the local police protecting the hospice, or when religious leaders and Tom Delay made various threats against the judges in this case, Michael Schiavo, or even the people working at the hospice.

His illness is potentially bad. If he responds to the antibiotics he may be ok (he'll never be in good health again even if he recovers from this), but if not he's likely to die. If the infection spreads to his blood he's a goner.

Also for those who don't know what that record is, it includes things such as: Michael Schiavo taking her to California for experimental treatments since normal medical science was unable to help her. Michael Schiavo getting an education in nursing so he would be able to care for her properly. Putting most of the malpractice lawsuit money that he got into a trust fund for her healthcare. Waking up every day to dress her, put makeup on her, and spending time with her. Even though they fought each other for years, inviting the parents to be in the room with her out of respect of the fact that they are her family too. Michael Schiavo was nearly a saint when it came to taking care of his wife, and once he learned of the impossibility of her recovery, he appears to have done what any decent person would do, which is to carry out what he felt his wife would have wanted. You and I don't know for sure, but given the great care, concern, and sacrifices he made for her, I have no question about his motives. My wife told me that she would not want to have her body kept alive if she were in Terri Schiavo's condition. I'd be willing to go further and risk prison for injecting her with something to help her OD peacefully if I had to. I love my wife enough that I would do whatever is necessary with no regard for myself to care for her, even if it meant to end her suffering. I hope I never have to be in a situation like Michael Schiavo, but I think he is a good man for all of the love and care he put into taking care of Terri Schiavo. As to his relationship with another woman, I don't see why Christians are getting upset about that, since it was common in biblical times to have multiple wives. Without being in a situation like he is in, it's not possible for people like us on this site to judge his motives or alliances. When you are a parent, do you abandon your first child upon the birth of the second child? If you have three or more kids, do you only care about the youngest and let the oldest go off into the world and suffer? People are capable of loving in many ways, so I see no reason to question Michael Schiavo's claims that he loved Terri. I'm not in his shoes, so I can't really judge him.

Morals are not bad, however there are certain elements such as Jerry Falwell which are turning their twisted view of Christianity into an American Taliban, and trying to impose their will on our nation. There is nothing wrong with Christianity, and I defend it's followers even though I don't believe in it at all. However, when people start to try to force their religion on me or others, I get angry. This whole Schiavo situation became an excuse for those that want to live under an American Taliban-like government to try to impose their beliefs on everyone else.

I saw this in the article: Why can't they be prevented from seeing their children? I understand that after these people serve their jail time they get to be out in society again, supposedly with all debts served (ignoring their very high rate of doing it again.) However, these people should never get custody of any children, even again. Adoption may suck for kids who are older than babies or toddlers, but it has to be better than being molested or living with parents who might rape your friends.

I know you said general questions, and that it wasn't addressed to me, but the brain uses tiny bursts of electricity between the brain cells to communicate. These can be tracked with an EEG. The EEGs done on a normal person show brain activity as thoughts occur, and science has advanced quite a bit to a point where some scientists can even trigger certain thoughts or feelings by putting a tiny amount of electricity into certain parts of the brain. The fact that you can track brain activity is a very standard, well-established science (thought control or mind-reading is not, by the way.) In this case, the EEG on Terri Schiavo showed nothing. The only thing she had left was her brain stem which controls things like breathing, your heart beat, etc. The combination of the EEG and the MRIs that have been done on her are pretty conclusive that her brain damage was so severe that there really wasn't a Terri Schiavo left, just a shell. A human body with no mind.

I'm no Christian, but I think that you're using fairly faulty logic. If you really believe in the Christian God, then there are no limits to what he can do. If there really was a God, and if he really wanted to heal this woman, he would have created a new brain in her head that worked, and he would have done it already. There was no miracle to happen, and despite the propaganda that you've seen (e.g. that faked video) she wasn't responsive as far as most medical professionals involved have said, as well as all of the legal professionals involved. This whole case was a sham that has pulled the wool over the eyes of many people like yourself. It's just another attempt to force our nation to become a theocracy using "morals" that have nothing to do with Christianity or anything good. This case was not the business of the federal government, and certainly not the business of people like you or I but the media pushed it in our faces every time we turned on the TV or walked past a newspaper. The court cases, which occurred with pretty much all very conservative judges, proved that there was no responsiveness on the part of Terri Schiavo. The many teams of doctors that saw her over the years agreed that there was no hope. Michael Schiavo even went for unconventional treatments to try to help her, but after they performed MRIs at some point they discovered that most of her brain was gone. The big deal about this case was not what happened there, but with the media and the religious nuts that tried to somehow link this with abortion and make up some conspiracy to patronize the deluded Schindlers and turn it political. This situation was interesting in that there were no liberals, no Democrats, or anyone involved except Republicans and extremist Christians. The religious right overstepped the bounds of decency and humanity, and most of America decided that it was ridiculous and to let the poor woman's body pass away like her mind did many years ago. Also, I think it's ironic to invoke God and religion in a case where it's pretty clear that if there were a God, he had 15 years to cure her, and a little longer than that to prevent her illness. I'm sure both Michael Schiavo and the Schindlers have prayed for her over the years, yet there was no answer to their prayers. If you believe in a God, then he's pretty clearly failed in this situation. God must not have wanted her to live on artificial means either if he refused to heal her. Why don't we hear more outrage over that? Is Jerry Falwell and the rest of those people going to tell God that he's no longer Christian and that they will boycott his businesses now, and smear him as an al-Qaeda loving traitor who makes radical legislation from the bench, despite what a Christian minority of people want? It's obvious that if there is a God, then he wanted Terri Schiavo's body to pass away.

He's already spent pretty much all of the money that he won in the class action lawsuit. Unfortunately, a large chunk went into fending off the Schindler's lawsuits, as well as her care. The idea that he's after her money is laughable, because that money no longer exists. I agree, and the only reason her body has been kept alive is because her parents are delusional. The dad was on TV a few days ago telling the cameras that Terri was talking to him and telling him that she didn't want to die. I think he needs to see a psychiatrist, and I don't mean that in a rude way. The Schindlers are deluded, and unfortunately some religious anti-abortion nuts, Republicans trying to make this into a political issue, and the media who put this on our all of our news rather than more important things have made the delusions of the Schindlers worse. All of those involved should be ashamed of themselves. The doctors who have evaluated Terri independent of the ones hired by Schiavo or Schindlers have agreed that she can not recover and that her brain is gone. The only reason that there is some controversy is because some people who use their PhDs to pretend to be experts (which many people here buy, for some reason) have said things to the contrary. All for political, religious, or some other reason that has nothing to do with the truth. I don't think that we have any right to complain since we've not been in his shoes. Sure, the fact that he's moved on in some ways is not what we all view as moral. However, he has proven many times over that he cares for Terri, much more than the parents who are keeping her corpse alive for selfish reasons. Even in their case though, I find it difficult to condemn them because I've never been in that situation so I don't know how I would react. That is a joke, because you can marry in a Catholic church without being Catholic or abiding by their rules. Even then, the whole conspiracy of the Catholic marriage is pretty extreme and there is absolutely no evidence of it. It just shows how weak the views of those who oppose Michael carrying out his wife's wishes are. The Catholic church marries divorcees. Not really, since he spent it all on caring for Terri and lawyer fees with the Schindlers. Someone either paid her to come out and say that or she is a habitual liar. It's highly unlikely that if Michael Schiavo wanted to have Terri killed, he would have attempted something that could be considered murder, kidnapping, or anything else like that. More than 80% of Americans agree with you. On this site we sometimes get the more extreme religious viewpoint because some folks have moved on from TWI to another cult without changing behavior or their easily-victimized mind. Very few people would want their corpse to be kept alive unnaturally, very few would want to interfere with the wishes of a wife based upon the word of a husband who has shown dedication to her, and very few believe that the federal government has any business interfering with private family business.

I don't know, breathing is overrated. Actually, the worst part of Houston is on the Eastern side by all of the refineries and such. I get a headache whenever I drive through there.

Nature doesn't scare me, having grown up in the South most of my life I've always had those sorts of things to deal with. Also, I've never had a run-in with bees, killer or otherwise. Wasps and yellowjackets in the North are meaner than anything in Texas. I've been stung at random by wasps and yellowjackets, plus I had a horrible bedbug incident here in Ohio. As far as snakes go, they usually run away. I've also seen black widows and brown recluses, but if you don't let things get too piled up and stored away it is easier to keep them away. Fire ants suck, but there are ways to deal with them, although my wife probably wouldn't let me do it the fun way (e.g. gasoline/pyrodex/etc.) In any case, I don't spend a lot of time outside so it's not as big of a problem for me. I walk to and from the car, sit out on the porch, or go to the beach. If there are good trails in The Woodlands I may teach my wife to ride a bikie and we might do that sometimes, but at this point I rarely spend much time outside.

Interesting, it looks like Jeb Bush doesn't believe in the law, and is willing to send his jackbooted thugs to enforce his whims in this case while ignoring the law. It's not like all our dead soldiers in Iraq, all the innocent Iraqi civilians killed, or all of the people who have suffered because of his reversal of worker safety policies or environmental policies would count towards that. If anything, Bush is a sociopathic mass-murderer. His bill to pull the plug on people whose families don't pay the bills on time (which is nearing 100% of the time as health insurance becomes less effective and more corrupt) is just one of many acts of corruption and possibly something approaching murder count. The war in Iraq is no different than if he had hired hitmen to murder the soldiers rather than sending them to Iraq over lies and greed.
