I have a candidate. And this is a real story. It's totally true. It happened to me on Sunday afternoon. But I have to give you some background. Hubs works PT. He's in a service industry and has a number of repeat clients, and some who only call once in a while and a few who call once. I am used to hearing different voices and some that I don't know on the phone and you would be right, if you assumed that if I didn't know the person, I would assume that hubs did. Phone rings Sunday afternoon and I answer. The voice says Hello. I say Hello. It's a male voice. He says, "I'm William", I say "William what can I do for you". William says "don't you remember me, I had sex with you last nite after we were in the bar". I'm stunned and don't say anything. In a half second while this registers, William says, "I forgot to ask you about your HIV status". I submit him for the award because, He mis-dialed the phone and didn't realize I wasn't the voice of the girl he slept with but kept on talking. He had sex with an apparent "stranger" with no "protection" and never let the idea of HIV enter his mind. BTW I'll tell you what I answered him after some time goes by so you can let this sink in. But I can't think of anything more stupid, and also leading toward potentially killing yourself than having sex with a stranger with no protection. What's your take? Does this make him eligible?

GreasyTech I was joking about the simple stuff. It is an amazing feat!. Besides that - it's humbling to see things in "real size".
-
We can make jokes, but I'm blown away by the fact that this is possible! It's difficult for me to wrap my brain around the fact that we can send a camera that far awway and have it take a picture of this planet....and have that camera send pictures back to us! Holy cow! Oh well - - simple mind - simple pleasures, I guess.

Now that's just ducky! 18 - 42 eh? This must be the way to create new jobs. Take someone who's 38 and a first class nurse and pull her into the Military NOW. To bad if she has teenagers! Too bad whatever. But her job is now open for somebody else. I'm not just picking on nurses....pick an occupation of your choice! That's a really good move if you want to kill the economy off altogether....draft the working people! How about all those 29 year old teachers, they don't get paid real well anyway....they'll never notice the pay drop....but then, who replaces them? It's not like we've got so many teachers that can't find jobs!(although in some areas, this is true) And if they spare "the professionals", bye bye truck drivers, we don't really need pampers or fresh produce anyway. Bye bye electritians and road workers and plumbers and factory workers and grocery workers...... Pardon me, Congressman Rangal, you just made yourself the most hated person in the country. I hope you own a hard hat and a bullet proof vest because methinks you'd like to have them.

I'm sorry Linda. It was really a tongue in cheek comment and what you're seeing is my wry sense of humor. I guess it was a very bad attenpt at it though. To my knowledge, there's no way to control these storms, but a mind picture of people along the coast waving it off shore is, in my mind, comedic.

Don't use rock salt near your roses! When it rains the salt is likely to get near the roots and harm them.

yum yum ;)

Cyclonic storms like these are a part of the way the planet works to redistribute heat and cycle water. They are part of the reason the planet is habitable! I may be dating myself, but maybe it's time we started waving our hands and chanting "bad rice, bad rice" to keep the monsters from slamming into our shores.

Just a little to the right of middle here and it was a surprise to me. I thought I was much more conservative than that. It may prove the statement that we mellow with age (tee hee)

It takes a special kind of man or woman to do that job. I'm grateful that you're doing it. Thank you.

Maybe this was just a fluke! Let's hope so anyway. If they didn't put any more thought into the marriage than they did the ceremony, though, it sounds like misery is around the corner.

Congratulations to Christine and also to you Evan. It looks like you both did really well!

It looks like so much structural damage! Can you rebuild/repair it? Or will you need to raze it and start over...or maybe it's too soon to know that now.
-
You must still be in shock! I hope you weren't inside when it happened! It looks like there was a young child in the car. Was anyone in the car hurt? It looks like that took a seerious beating too!! Believe it or not, that happened to me once too! I'm so sorry. If I had a spare couple of rooms, you could stay here while they sort it all out.

First off: I don't think anybody should be thrown away (except those such as child molesters who it seems can't be fixed). Sometimes I avoid someone who's "broken" because they trigger me in sensitive areas I need better control over. But whom I avoid isn't thrown away. You can learn a lot by reading someone's scars. If you're friends, you may avoid hurtful topics, but I think nearly everybody brings something to the table and I think that sometimes the best soup has the most ingredients. My favorite shoes don't look very good anymore but they are the most comfortable because of all the "hits" they've taken. Interesting topic, Abi; I'm looking forward to some poster's responses to it.

Horray! I second JonnyL's reply. I feel like dancing!!!

Some of us - well - sometimes - we nitpick way too much.

[......and some people moan about THE thread.......] [this is the way that one started] tee hee

Proctologists are too good for most of them! Whoever invented the all stuff to torture our poor sensitive parts should have more than a proctologist. How about a dozen diseased yaks leaving a present in the glove compartment of their cars!?

Thanks Pawtucket. My husband and I came to the organization later in life so we had at least 10 years of living life and the experience and education that brings with it. The BC (ordained) asked us (husband and myself) to show up early to a large meeting to learn. One of us to watch and learn about ushering and the other about audio operation. We knocked on the door and some arrogant wipper-snapper shoo'ed us off telling us that "this kind of stuff is only for Corp and we didn't qualify. The shame of it is, we were very willing to be helpers "in particular". Neither one of us was up for that kind of embarassment again, so we never volunteered, and when asked we said no thanks. That was the mind-set in the early-mid '80's and I doubt it's changed unless there aren't enough Corp people around to get certain jobs done now. That's just how it is.

Yes, but I just scanned quickly through it bookmarking it for later. If I recall correctly, the biggest single problem with that plant was that the reactor was made of graphite. The ones we have don't have the graphite so a total melt through is much less likely, although by no means impossible.

I remember driving to work that morning and hearing about it. I was really angry that it turned out that the Sweeds reported the accident (in a way it was a report) because Russia should have done that itself. A documentary was made after if was cleaned up and I made it a regular point to show it to my older classes. They didn't know much about nuclear power stations but they did understand about nuclear accidents. They were impressed as far as 16 and 17 y/o's can. I used to know, but I've forgotten how long it will be before any of that land will be useable again especially for growing consumable food. I also wonder about the ground water. It is a fairly safe bet that the melt down didn't reach the ground water, but weathering will drive most things all the way down there one way or another. I would love to map that aquifer and hope it's not attached to any other one that's necessary for human consumption. This is what happens when you over extend yourself so that you cannot successfully maintain your stuff. Man made stuff falls down sooner or later it it's not maintained. Major bridges in and around NYC are in a constant state of painting, inspection, repair etc. It's not enough just to build it!

This thread has the potential of changing people. I'm not angry at individual posters but it is hard to take when that concrete wall of disbelief on the part of a poster or 2 is a consistent challenge. Also - there was a time when the organization had many individuals in many places across the country, so just because something was prevalent in your area, doesn't mean it was also in mine....and I need to recognize that fact. Abject denial makes innocent victims into "liars". Thanks for starting this thread Oakspear.

My opinion is....if there is any way you can send her there and you don't I will hurt you! Seriously, I taught in several Catholic high schools. They did not always have all the monies other schools did, but lately they are more and more funded and have whatever kids need to learn. One of them recently put all students on a computer. Every freshman gets a portable and everything that goes with it. The only thing I had to do differently was pray every class period. And they didn't care what we prayed! I could even read from Psalms or Proverbs, the idea was focus on God! The only other thing I had to do was go with them to mass. They never made me do anything in mass that I didn't want to do but be respectful. I never objected to mass. Of course my mind did weird things, but nobody else knew it. (weird things = could not comprehend transubstantiation etc). It's obvious these parents don't like the public schools either and it seems you and they can probably get along well enough. You may even find that you enjoy it. You may even find folks such as yourself who wouldn't openly use the word "Christian" as a label except for this school. Go for it.
