  4. Happy Birthday Pawtucket - - all 24 hours of it!
  5. I kinda freaked out...sorry. I want to learn this stuff and now I have to do this, but I feel like I am trying to untangle a knot in my fine gold locket chain with boxing gloves. I found this: ________________________________ Here's a simple procedure to create a Quick Boot diskette for WinNT/2000/XP. It allows you to start up the Windows NT/2000/XP system with a minimum hassle in case of bootup trouble. Assume that you are running a healthy WinNT/2000/XP system. Here's how to create the "Windows Quick Boot" diskette: 1. Open a DOS Box (Start > Run... > cmd). 2. FORMAT A: 3. XXCOPY16 C:NTLDR A: /H 4. XXCOPY16 C:NTDETECT.COM A: /H 5. XXCOPY16 C:BOOT.INI A: Note: if you don't have XXCOPY16, use the standard ATTRIB and COPY command to copy the hidden files. XXCOPY16 is a 16-bit version of the XXCOPY freeware utility that is available at http://www.xxcopy.com. The three files listed above (NTLDR, NTDETECT.COM, and BOOT.INI) are all essential. Optionally, you may copy the following files if they are present in the root directory (needed only when you need to boot into Win9x/ME as a dual-boot system) 6. XXCOPY16 C:IO.SYS A: /H 7. XXCOPY16 C:MSDOS.SYS A: /H 8. XXCOPY16 C:CONFIG.SYS A: 9. XXCOPY16 C:AUTOEXEC.BAT A: If you use a SCSI disk, you also need NTBOOTDD.SYS. That is it!!! _________________________________ I believe all I have to do is # 1 - 5 above...then download the updated BIOS onto that disk, then turn off the computer. Then insert this disk and turn computer on. Is that correct?? What kinds of commands or suggestions may present themselves during this process that I should be aware of. Thanks.... krys...who is still shaking...but not as much
  6. How do I make such a thing. I need it to upgrade my bios...what I have is a recovery CD...but the directions require a bootable floppy!? Why does this make me so nervous??? krys
  7. I'm still learning. I royally "plussed" that I cannot figure out how to get scandisk or checkdisk to work on this machine!...I can get it to work, but I cannot find a way to print out the results....perhaps I am poking in the dark and there is no way! I've dumped ZoneAlarm and there was some improvement....in error messages...there were none...but this machine continued crashing. I located downloaded and installed a new video driver. So far, 11 hours and no crashes, although all my display settings needed to be reset! Tech support suggests that the next step, if I need one...is to repair Windows with the rescue CD...and then, and then only (don't know why that statement....) download and install an updated bios. So - that's where we are.
  8. THE recognizes his faithful, wasway. Because you have put THE in your PDA you've greatly endeared yourself. You are an example for the less faithful. Good work.
  9. We think about you often. Have fun in Denver. Stay safe while you're on the road...you are one big VIP around here. I'm glad you have a chance to enjoy yourself for a time. krys
  10. I'm sorry these wishes are belated! I think you're tops!
  11. Love you Chinster! Hope this is the best yet! krys
  12. Thanks. I'll let you know what happens when it happens. I appreciate your help in trouble shooting this puppy. In spite of the frustration, I enjoy the learning
  13. Hi all: I have all the paperwork from Cyberpower where I bought this puppy about a year ago. I cannot tell which item is the motherboard! I will call them in the morning to find out. I went to their website and they appear to have all the updated drivers for everything they build into their machines. They have several BIOS updates, but, of course I am taking no chances until I talk to them in the morning. I have the most recent IE 6 with SP1. What would happen if I downloaded and installed IE6 again right over the existing copy on my machine??? would that be a problem? John, in my travels lately, I've discovered that just about every single piece of equipment has its own driver. Ugh! This cable modem is external. I recently upgraded from dialup!
  14. Thanks John! There are several things in start-up and I will delete them shortly, thanks. I have not booted ZoneAlarm yet as I'm not sure how to set XP's own firewall, and I haven't gotten the router yet. But - I wonder how vulnerable will I be if I do just delete it? I've traced most of the errors to Internet Explorer...and I think I've gotten all the updates, but I'm going to check the Microsoft website now. This computer is almost exactly 1 year old...Athlon AMD 1800 approx equal to Pentium 4 - 256 ram 50 gig and other goodies which I will post later. I've learned a whole lot reading about this stuff. I feel better that I'm not going to lose my system, but this is, at the least, annoying. Thanks for your response. krys BTW since I updated the cabel modem driver, the computer has not "crashed"...all the info I've given you has come from the Event Viewer!
  15. Hey - you know those errors and crashes I've been working on...well now there is a new wrinkle. Last time the puter took a dive, the error message on the screen indicated a BIOS update was in order!!!! BIOS = basic input output system....the thing that makes this little grey box think like a computer....so now...how do I do that? Am I fried? How much trouble am I in, exactly!
  16. I'm learning. Can one of you please tell me where I can find a list of event numbers and their significance? I am finding lots of application hangs...but there is no info when I check Microsoft's site...I cannot track down the application. Many of these errors are associated with True Vector...so I am going to get a router and remove ZoneAlarm from my system, since ZA has that component. The majority of the numbers I am seeing are 1000, 1001, 1002 etc...and I have no idea what they mean...or how to go about finding out what they mean!
  17. yeah - I know I'm kind "ignrent" - but thanks for the lessons.... What is a router??? where do I get one?? How do I install it ...etc
  18. Locating and installing the driver worked. I've not crashed once today...and I made it a point to surf long and hard! Also - I used the help files in XP to start locating information about these events, and along the way I found a web site with many of these events discussed.( re Event Viewer) I was able to identify the source of many errors as being associated with ZoneAlarm. According to these web sources ZA was a potential culpret...and when I checked ZA's log...there was a correlation. I don't know what to do about it, short of uninstalling ZA, but then what are my alternatives - - meaning what can I use instead and will I have similar problems. Anyway..just thought I would check in and let you know about some of my progress. krys
  19. Mister P-Mosh I agree that would a good idea. I have limited understanding of what those things are, what they mean and how to fix them. Please, can you recommene someplace where I can find out more?
  20. Some of you guys make me wish I lived further west....it would be fun! ....except for the Burger King - - I'd prefer Wendy's...but if it means I could eat with you guys....I'll swallow BK!
