Usually those will show up as added scenes, although sometimes scenes are cut and replaced with other scenes. A good example is Blade Runner: the theatrical version has a voiceover narrator. The director's cut eliminates the voiceover. Not having seen either version (blasphemy!), I couldn't tell you any other differences.
