  1. We're now at $1,500. My original goal was $500, but you guys burst through that in no time. The current goal of $2,000 appears to be a bit more reasonable. Diane has been really touched by this. She keeps sending me e-mails and making calls and keeping a close eye on the donor list. She wants to know, for example, who DWBH is. I told her not to worry about it, just be happy. Another donor called himself FWOTM, which brought a smile out of me. The acronym stands for First Wednesday Of The Month, and it refers to a group of friends from my former college newspaper. Three of them have come through, but apparently two didn't want their names to pop up on the donor list. All of this has been quite empowering: I feel so empty when I think of this issue, until I think of this walk. I'm not pie-in-the-sky enough to think we'll find a cure in time for Diane, or Augie, or anyone currently suffering. But goodness, who knows? It is possible. In the meantime, we can fight with every ounce of strength we do have. I've heard some heart-rending stories of misdiagnosis, and I'm still puzzled by the longevity of Stephen Hawking, who's been living with this disease for decades. Your prayers remain appreciated.
  2. First Knight Sean Connery The Untouchables
  3. Stardust is correct. First line is the first line of the movie, spoken by a narrator. The second one is when one brother tries to poison two others but is thwarted in a four-way toast.

  5. "You killed the bishop." "No, Primus, I think you'll find that YOU killed the bishop by drinking from the wrong cup!"
  6. I thought this song was horribly easy. Beauty and the Beast. Try this one: There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold.
  7. New song... Tale as old as time. True as it can be. Barely even friends. Then somebody bends unexpectedly.
  8. Where nothing ever grows. No rain or rivers flow... Africa. Puh lease. Africa's got rain forests, implying growth, rain AND rivers. And there won't be snow in Africa this Christmastime. So what? There won't be snow in Florida either. You don't see is raising money for it! Do They Know It's Christmas, by Band-Aid
  9. "A philosopher once asked, 'Are we human because we gaze at the stars, or do we gaze at them because we are human?' Pointless, really...'Do the stars gaze back?' Now that's a question."
  10. Ah, one of my favorite Christmas songs. Sing it with me, would ya? This song has five words. This song has five words. This song has five words, Come on and help me think of some more. This song has five words. This song has five words. This song has five words, Come on and help me think of some more. I wish that I had some brand new lyrics. I wish that I had some brand new lyrics. I wish that I had some brand new lyrics So I could add them to this song. I wish that I had some brand new lyrics. I wish that I had some brand new lyrics. 11. Who said this was a vpw-ism? You'd be hard pressed to find a Christian sect that has a problem with this expression. If it's a scam for VPW to use it, it's gotta be a scam for every single other church that uses the exact same phrase. Am I missing something?
  12. "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." You know, a lovely lady I met at a "fancy-dress" party once offered to travel with me to Madagascar, but seeing as I just met her and I had a job, I thought we might want to get to know each other first. Instead she hooked up with a two-headed, three-armed dimwit with a space ship.
  13. Eric Carmen, who later made "Hungry Eyes" on the Dirty Dancing soundtrack and "Make Me Lose Control," a misnamed song that's better (and incorrectly) known as "Turn the Radio Up."
  14. Looks like I'm going to have to start putting my findraising goals in pencil. Doubled the goal again, to $2,000 after a handful of very generous donations over the last couple of days. Just FYI: Here's the breakdown so far... Greasespot friends: $500 Diane's friends: $425 College paper buddies: $200 NAHJ buddies: $25 Way to go Greasespot!
  15. Happy to report that what's-her-name will be joining us in April for the walk!
  16. Noni, As a former JW myself, I say, celebrate any way you want. Enjoy the season.
  17. You would think I'd know my own sister's name! My mother calls her Diana. I've always called her Diana and introduced her as Diana. Everyone I know in my family has always called her Diana. So how am I supposed to know her name is actually Diane? She informed me today, after seeing the walk page for the first time. I personally think this is hilarious. God bless family life, eh?
  18. A great weekend on the fundraising front, thanks to the Greasespot Cafe. I will have to increase my fundraising goal very soon to account for the success you guys made possible. Thank you all, again. I'll be chatting this one up a lot more, as the walk itself is April 12. And on occasion I'll re-post the link in case anyone else wants to climb on board.
  19. Yesterday I woke up and I was 20% of the way to my (modest) fundraising goal. Today I woke up and I was 80% of the way there. Go Greasespot! Seriously, thank you all.
  20. Greasespotters continue coming through. I'm truly touched. You guys are going to move me to tears!
  21. An impressive debut for the Greasespot Cafe. Many thanks to those who've already made their gifts. I hope as the day draws nearer, I can count on some more support. I sent the link to Diana today, but I haven't heard back from her. When I do, I'll let you know.
