HERE WE GO......YET AGAIN!
Raf replied to DontWorryBeHappy's topic in Spirit and Truth Fellowship International
I'm not opposed to the notion of developing classes, but I am opposed to the notion of charging for them unless the recipient is getting something tangible in return or it's clear that we're paying for rented space. Or both. From my understanding of CES and, later, STFI, those who paid for the classes actually GOT the class. The whole set of tapes/CD's. That's fair. You're selling a product. But in the case of TWI and its offshoots, it really seems to me that these classes are less about teaching than they are about cultic-socialization and indoctrination. And yes, there's a difference. Teaching develops critical thinking skills. Indoctrination does not. TWI talked a good game when it came to critical thinking, but it was manipulated to the point that what we were actually taught and encouraged to do was parrot what the organization wanted us to think and say. Without exception, all of these "foundational classes," from PFAL to WAP to Whatever-the-devil-they're-calling-this, do not seek to teach as much as they seek to encourage group cohesion. Here's what to say. Here's how to say it. Here's what to think. Here's how to think it. Without exception, they all begin with their conclusion, and encourage us to disregard anything that challenges that conclusion. What's the greatest secret in the world today? The Bible is the revealed Word and Will of God. Really? That's the greatest secret in the world? Because if so, it's poorly kept. Lots of people believe that, whether they phrase it that way or not. Cures for cancer, ALS, autism, amputee regeneration? Not as secret as something believed by millions. Nonsense. And along with being the word and will of God, it's perfect! One preposition out of place and your Bible would fall to pieces (until a preposition is shown to be out of place. Then you're nitpicking). In any other field, if you start with your conclusion and discard anything that conflicts with it, you're an intellectual fraud. But when it comes to the Bible, you're steadfast! I attended a church in South Florida that never seemed to see a need to "run classes." If they wanted to start a class, they just started teaching on the subject every Sunday. Keep coming to church, and you've got the whole class. Yes, they recorded it, so if you wanted to see it all again, you could buy it later. But if you want to find the class from five years ago? Yeah, good luck with that. It shouldn't be about the classes. Ever. It should be about the content, which should be shared constantly. Anyway, good luck with this class, JALynn. I'm sure it will be an improvement over the last one, but not over the next one. -
"Hey Flash, wanna hear a joke?" "No!" "Sure." "What do you call a three-humped camel?" "I... don't... know... What... do... you call... a three... humped... camel?" "Pregnant!" ".........ha!........ha!.......ha!"

I'd like to see you guys (and others, TLC, MRAP, anyone else) hash this out peacefully. I think this thread is healthy. Please continue.

This associated with a clue on another game thread?

Silence of the Lambs Nice quote selection because it's a scene transition. The scene cuts to the next scene after the second line. Well done. "That's it then. Cancel the kitchen scraps for lepers and orphans, no more merciful beheadings, and call off Christmas!"

Good guess! And it has the added virtue of being the correct guess!

Clever I'm just going by the technical clues. Never heard of Sophie Thompson, but Daniel Radcliffe and Helena Bonham Carter starred together in the Harry Potter series. But they weren't themselves (hence the technically) So Daniel Radcliffe's body and Helena Bonham Carter's body were used to portray the same character. There's a giveaway actress, which means the character is female. Which female impersonated both Harry Potter and Bellatrix Lestrange? Well, EVERYONE impersonated Harry at the beginning of Deathly Hallows I, so that narrows nothing down. But Bellatrix? I know of only one. Hermione Granger. The giveaway would have been Emma Watson.

WordWolf: I think we agree as far as what you wrote. Where we take it from there, I suspect we disagree. :)

Clarification: "Every one of these quotes touches on a theme. The theme is the name of the movie." That applies to the three quotes in the preceding post. The earlier quotes are from the same movie, but do not touch on the theme.

With the Proviso that I did not express a completely thought out argument, yes.

Aaaaaaaaaand now it's stuck in my head.

"It sounds like a boy Garry's age needs a man around the house." "Well, it depends on the man. I had a man around. He used to wake me up every morning by flicking lit cigarettes at my head. He'd say, 'Hey, a--hole, get up and make me breakfast.' You know, Mrs. Buckman, you need a license to buy a dog, or drive a car. Hell, you need a license to catch a fish! But they'll let any butt-reaming a--hole be a father." ... " I didn't know myself until a couple of months ago. You see, a few years ago, I was living in Vegas with this girl. Showgirl. She was in that show 'Elvis On Ice'. Anyhow, we drifted apart, as people do in these complicated times, and then a couple of months ago, she shows up with Cool and tells me "You watch him. I shot someone. I have to leave the country."... That's a parent?" ... "You don't talk like a kid." "Yeah, well I'm not really a kid." "You're not a duck." "This is a memory of when I was a kid. I'm 35 now. I have kids of my own. You don't even really exist. You're an amalgam." "A what?" "A combination of several ushers my dad left me with over the years. I combined them into one memory." "Why?" "This was a great symbolic moment of my life. My father dumping me with you... it's why I swore things would be different with my kids. It's my dream. Strong, happy, confident kids." "That's great, that's great. You know, you - you got a lovely family, and I'm a g-d-amalgam!" Every one of these quotes touches on a theme. The theme is the name of the movie.

Lou is the only one not to make it out of his 30s. He was the only one in that group who was not alive when he was inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Posting my thoughts on the difference between soul and spirit, from Tom G's thread in doctrinal. I don't think soul and spirit are the same, Biblically. But I also think they are invented concepts entirely, and that is why it is so difficult to distinguish between them. It's like comparing the nutritional qualities of lembas bread and pumpkin pasties. They don't exist in real life, so you can say anything you want about either of them. I suspect "soul" was the ancients' way of saying "consciousness," and they did not quite understand that the "soul" is nothing more than a function of the body. The notion of a soul as distinct from the body appears to be a later development. You don't see it through most of the Old Testament. Will expand on my thoughts if anyone is interested and/or if I've said something factually/historically incorrect and I am corrected. But my basic position is that neither the soul nor the spirit exist. We are what we are.

Biblically, I think soul and spirit are different things, with soul being primarily a word used to describe the fact that something has animated physical life and spirit being more in touch with God himself. All animals have soul. But spirit is unique to humans. I'm confident that Wierwille's distinctions were incorrect, but not as far off the mark (Biblically) as the notion that soul and spirit are synonymous. I'll signal here that I (obviously) have other thoughts that would not be appropriate for a doctrinal thread, in which we seek Biblical answers. I will post a thought or two in Picking Up Threads in the Questioning Faith subforum.

Considering the circumstances, I'm going to ask another mod to make the call on this one. Stay tuned.

I just found this thread. I have not read it yet. If it is political, it will be locked. But I don't want to make that decision without having read the posts

Not immensely popular. Actually a bit of a letdown. Seasons of Love should have been a giveaway, but the lyrics of tge title tune, particularly those in bold, should give you enough for an educated guess.

Catching up on Agents of SHIELD. Damn good season so far. What's everyone else's status with this show? I'm 11 episodes into season 3. There's been a major death and sort of resurrection. I'm still trying to sort that out. And I love that they made use of Powers Booth.
