What's the deal with the British accent? I gotta problem...

But WordWolf - Harrison was actually trying to be convincing and no doubt hoping that the Jerries wouldn't notice! And you need a lot of latitude with some of the fake Scots accents in Brigadoon -
Are they black or grey squirrels?

sirguessalot: The Shakers can only recruit, they cannot increase numbers by breeding. It's a surprise they have lasted this long! ;)-->

Wingnut: The Bishop is supposed to know "by the Holy Spirit" if one is telling porkies during tithing settlement. Notably such credit is lacking in TWI ! :D-->

Ah jest lurve tha sutthen accent mahself! But it would be out of place in films in a different context! -
Reminds me of the paradox in Terminator 2. The guy who invents Skynet didn't envisage what would happen. Yet God despite knowing what would happen still went ahead - after all he created Lucifer who rebelled and became Satan. He also knew that not everyone would fit in with this so-called heterosexual pattern, just as he knew that there would be Hitlers and Stalins and Pol Pots. My logic has problems with some Christian explanations for the whole thing, especially when the idea is touted that he gets far more upset over love than hatred. If there are distortions then Christianity is equally as guilty as the "enemy."

Yes most churches don't require you to fully disclose your finances whilst not disclosing theirs - except perhaps the LDS but even they do not require to know your gross income! And I don't know of any that would be so intrusive as TWI!

Madonna lives over here I believe - certainly she got married in Scotland and bought a house in London! ;)--> Looking back at cinema history it is quite amazing how many of our actors we exported to Hollywood and still do. --> -
Sharon: Schumel doesn't rhyme with Eve that would take the force out of the mantra that people chant. :D--> Mr P-Mosh the problems of who started what have occupied people down the ages. There are Bible records which appear to show that God, or at least his spokespersons approved some of the things you mention whcih are kind of hard to explain. But there are monsters out there who are quite happy to condemn men or women loving each other whilst happily commiting genocide or happily screwing every woman in sight. I find it hard to think of a God who will get upset over gay sex whilst sitting back and letting millions die. Yet murderers and adulterers are quite happy to and still think he is on their side.

It's HEY not HAY Jonny! :o--> Accents are in. In the old days of British cinema one had to have what is known as a "RADA accent." That meant everyone sounded posh no matter how lowly a character they were playing. Then as cinema became more international and probably due to the American influence, accents became more of a mixture including regional accents. But there are also films where accent is not British English - in Amadeus for example Simon Callow (a fine Brit actor) went American because most of the actors in it were I expect, yet Roy Dotrice retained his Brit one. Peter Ustinov was a master of accents - yes his name is Russian but he was born and brought up in England. He was in Spartacus and played Nero in Quo Vadis with a Brit accent but also did the old man in Logan's Run with an American one and a Belgian French accent in Death on the Nile. Many of the Roman historical films had a preponderance of Brit actors, including Laurence Olivier so it's not surprising that Americans would at least try to tone down their accents. It has to be said that many Americans cannot do a good Brit accent whereas the Brits can do a good American one. Rene Zelwegger is a notable exception to the rule! Amongst others! Back in the 30s, however, who would have thought that the perfect Southern Belle would be a Brit? ;)--> The French historical stuff - well the French accent speaking in English could well have a more limited appeal and being a neighbour country using English would appeal to a wider audience. Gerard Depardieu is accepted in English despite the obvious French accent. But these days a mixture of accents appears to be more acceptable and you often hear people supposedly related and from the same area using entirely different ones just as much as others modify theirs. The Lord of the Rings trilogy has American hobbits, Scottish hobbits, northern english hobbits, Welsh dwarves with Scottish accents, Australian elves, cockney orcs, American rangers besides RADA wizards. Yet do we really notice them so much? Full marks to Brad Dourif, however for his Wormtongue which was just so British! Actors are getting more international, even the American ones, and the ability to speak English as it is spoken in the Mother Country, is seen as an increasing asset and widens their availability for roles. There is a noticeable improvement in this ability among the Americans - the proper English accent is recognised as being more pleasing even by Americans themselves and where the accent is of course proper and natural for American movies, so many movies these days are set or made elsewhere. -
God would never have named any such person Steve - it's not a Hebrew name!

Extreme language from LCM certainly but symptomatic of the general viewpoint of many even if they would not express it the same or go so far. Disapproval is indeed one thing but such intolerance and hate entirely another. Mrs Proudie would indeed have been proud.

Def: The translators of the Bible called it an abomination. The same word is used of several things you would not think abominable - eating shellfish and wearing mixed fibres for example. Just shows how we can be selective and fit things to our own views doesn't it. So easy to get God to speak in terms we personally agree with. What I would term the Mrs Proudie Syndrome

I had a church youth leader of that name but somehow I doubt he was a thespian!

Galen: Whilst it was indeed an experience of my younger days (sigh) it is a continued experience also now. Major groupings continue to fulminate and to oppose any progress or more modern understandings. The validity of gay relationships still continues to be denied by the vast bulk of hierarchies even where their memberships are often more understanding or at least prepared to be tolerant of the rights of others. It is almost miraculous that there are gay people out there who have managed to reconcile their sexuality with faith.
-
Don't you think that gay people get offended when people like J Barrax express their opinions? There are many documentated case of "false" deliveries too, there is even an ex ex-gay movement. The Bible is down to how it is translated and interpreted and should also be viewed by the conditions and society of its times. It's been used to justify many things including how black people were treated by "Bible believing Christians." Maybe it's easier to hide than skin colour, but one is still the same personal situation and dealing with prejudice. There should be no need for closets except for storing clothes.

Thanks Raf - will have to keep an eye out for it! :P-->

Gays of any age often feel shunned and shut out of Christian spirituality. It leads to themselves rejecting it because of what they see of it. When it is done by children it is what they have learned from their parents. " You got to be carefully taught."
