What's the deal with the British accent? I gotta problem...
Trefor Heywood replied to J0nny Ling0's topic in Open
Well apart perhaps from the original series and TNG (and the movies) I never had much interest in the rest Raf. The McFly family besides being time travellers must have been very close knit interbreeders who never moved out of Hill Valley. But we digress as you don't find many Brit accents among them... ;)--> -
I love being here! --> We are a group of disparate people who can claim a common past experience. We largely now think for ourselves and can share things in a far freer way then we ever could in TWI. It also keeps us up to date with events and people.

I wonder if straight men are by nature slobs and need a woman to keep them tidy... Whereas gay men are naturally fashionable!

I'm not a parent MJ but if I was I know I would accept what the sexuality of my children was. The most heterosexual parents on Earth cannot actually choose nor influence (though they naturally try to) what their child's sexuality will be. That is why you have gay children of hetero parents and straight children of homo parents. Parents can influence tolerance and understanding of have the right to set boundaries during a child's minority. Their attitudes can have a profound effect, especially when making a child feel wanted and loved. It is indeed different from sexual acts, but being able to accept that at some point these may happen and to accept the existence of a partner cna be a real challenge. When a son or daughter marries heterosexually I am sure the parents do not dwell upon the "wedding night" but on the grandchildren they wish to see follow. When it is a gay relationship they may feel cheated and denied out of being grandparents, especially when the gay child is an only child. Some parents react extremely negatively and unlovingly, it may well be influenced by their religious belief also. What it says for that religious belief is certainly begging the question.

The book belonged to a friend who was the real geek! :o--> But I do own a book called The Physics of Star Trek ! -
"Safely written down"... - don't you mean you have squirelled it away Jonny? :D-->

Regarding the "in your face" argument. Gays get heterosexuality thrown in their faces every day. Yet we are tolerant of it. As soon as gays speak out for the right to equal treatment, however, the opposite is too often true.

Just because Chekov isn't shown in Space Seed doesn't mean he wasn't on the Enterprise at the time and that he didn't therefore encounter Khan "offscreen." You don't see some of the leading characters in every episode do you? And Vulcans are capable of emotion even if they seek to suppress it with logic as even Sarek admits. I read an interesting book about the bloopers and errors of every single episode of the original series - and boy do you have to be quick to actually spot some of them! --> -
I am sure that some gay people have been turned into alcoholics due to the pressures and neuroses that have been thrust upon them. Coping mechanisms do vary considerably regarding how they handle their lives, some can emerge positive and unscathed (such as myself) but for others the way they are viewed and treated gets too much. Maybe it is on the whole easier for kids to grow up gay today, but just as hard in a religious family or environment as it ever was. Religion has alas too often been the enemy of human progress and understanding and the simpleness of Christianity's essentials get hidden by the rules, regulations and thoughts of men who cite God as their ally and inspiration. We need to fight theocracies wherever we find them - they are simply tools of oppression and self-aggrandisement.

It's one of those legends based upon the ancient highlanders and thier feile mhath (great kilt one piece plaid) and the modern feile beagh (little kilt which covers the loins only and is already pleated). I believe the tradition is still enforced in Scottish regiments but with everyone else you end up guessing! :D--> (unless you know them well anyway) Raf - if you have seen the Young Indiana Jones chronicles you will know that Indy is multi lingual and can speak each tongue with a perfect accent and diction. Somehow that kind of militates against your argument, although I can understand your reasoning, :P--> -
Squirrels over there seem much tamer than those over here. My friend in Toronto called to a black one and it came a running for a nut. The grey ones of the South Lawn of the White House have no fear of humans whatsoever coming within inches and sitting and looking at you for a treat. Somehow I didn't have the heart to catch and eat one!

There isn't any logic Garth - people love to blast the sins of others whilst minimising their own. They are always happy to cite divine indulgence upon them whilst denying it to others.

I would have no problem understanding Patrick Stewart doing a Yorkshire accent and I can tell the world of diffence between an Indian English Accent and an African one just as maybe we don't get all the subtle nuances between American accents unless they are really blatently different. I would find it strange that an actor like Harrison Ford would not try do do his character justice by doing a real as opposed to fake accent - guess we will have to wait for his next "kilted" performance! :D--> -
If this "deliverance" were so good def you wouldn't have ex ex-gays! A leopard may appear to have stripes but the spots are there underneath. -->

Makes a change from KFC I guess! :P-->

RADA is the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art Jonny, located in Gower St, London. Many Brit actors have been through it's portals - perhaps the closest US equivalent would be The Actors Studio in NYC. -
Thanks ex10. Jesus kept company with many people that his world saw as undesirable and looked down upon, those who were less than "pure". Even well intentioned Christians can be respectors of persons and the message that gay people are somehow not wanted can come across pretty powerfully.

Paint your Wagon?

Squirrels can be amazingly tame - especially the grey ones at the White House and the Black ones in Toronto! They eat guinea pigs in Peru but not sure a squirrel as a gastronomic item has yet reached its peak...

TWI doesn't want to give in order to receive it just wants to receive! :D-->

Don't worry Sharon - I had to wait ages to get one right myself! :o-->

Sometimes we have the paradox of those who think they are overcoming what they believe to be evil with good yet end up doing evil themselves. As has been stated, this does nothing for their cause. Many gay people reject Christianity because of what they see and hear and experience and we are not just talking about Phelpsian extremists.

Jean Luc does indeed have a classic RADA cultured accent. Why is a good question especially as I seem to remember a scene with his mother who speaks with a French accent. No it's not a scottish accent Jonny though I expect Mr Stewart can do one, unlike "Scotty" (James Doohan) lol ;)--> In fact several TNG cast members are Brits but they try to speak "merykan" :D--> . -
It's not juist greedy oil companies - it's greedy governments too! We pay around 83p per litre here and about 70% of that is tax and duty! Compared with that your prices are CHEAP!

I think that how one judges what are rules or not is to some extent at least subjective. Just as interpretation and translation is subjective. Just as the decision to "let God off the hook" and blame absolutely everything upon Satan, a created being, is subjective. Just as the conscience is subjective regarding how one finds oneself. One of the best things VPW ever shared was that poem in the lift. There are gay people who do not fear the judgement on this at least - I am one. That might make others tremble, but that is my conclusion, not reached without much thought, prayer and suffering, thought and study. Therefore I can no longer see it as negatively as others would like and rejoice when others have an easier time of it than I had.
