I wanted to explain something from a long ago post by Geo. Geoduc is a clam of some sort that is found in Northwestern waters. It is pronounced gooey-duck. Never tasted it though. Well Ohio is good at growing tomatoes (except in my backyard). WG
-
Okey here goes: Of course as with all WG recipes, seasonings can be adjusted to taste. 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts. juice of 2 limes 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped or put through a garlic press about 3 TBSP olive oil. 2 Tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon ground cumin 2 green peppers 1 red sweet pepper (mango to you Buckeyes) 1 can diced chile peppers OR 1 fresh jalapeno 1 sweet onion such as Vidalia or Walla Walla sweets, thinly sliced as separated into rings. 1/2 cup coarsely chopped cilantro leaves Salsa and chips. Combine in a freezer bag or baking dish the lime juice, garlic and 3 TBSP olive oil. Add chicken breasts and turn to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and marinate in the refrigerator 1/2 hour. In the meanwhile, Thinly slice the onions and sweet peppers. Heat the 2 Tbsp. olive oil in a heavy skillet and sautee the peppers and onions in it, adding the chile peppers or jalapeno and the cumin. Remove when tender crisp and keep warm. Remove the chicken from the marinade and put it in the pan in which you cooked the veggies. Add a bit of the marinade if you like. Cook on medium heat until done. Put the veggies back in the pan to warm a bit with the cilantro added at the last minute. Serve with chips and salsa.

I started using Pomona's when I was diagnosed diabetic. I don't like the taste of artifical sweeteners in jams and jellies, but of course couldn't use much sugar. This stuff is great. I do tomatoes and pickles also. When we lived in NC our next door neighbor let us garden on some land he had outisde of town and one year we canned over 100 tomato products, whole tomatoes, sauce, and juice, from 24 tomato plants! It was hard work but gratifying. We would pick at 6:00 AM, come home and process. The payoff was a kitchen table with 30 or 40 cans sitting there, fresh out of the canner, emitting one little "ping" and then another as the lids sealed down. WG

I don't think God does evil things to people, states, or whatever. I will certainly pray for rain for Tennessee, the gentle soaking rain that replenishes the soil, the streams, and the hearts of man and beast alike. WG

That particular limb leader was soooo inappropriate with women. By the way, I never heard our FL coordinator the second year get ugly with anyone. A rare bird. Hope he's happy wherever he is and whatever he's doing.. WG

How about a big old rutabega rotting in the ground? I really like tomatoes! WG

The lockdown must've been your third year, Waysider. I am quite sure I would have gone completely nuts had I been there. I never knew that about RW getting to go home to spend time with his wife. I stayed in their house for a block and hated it. But it was better than KS's house, where my personal belongings were sifted like wheat and sometimed thrown out if she didn't know what to do with them (like LEAVE THEM ALONE!). The only time I remember Ho*** Y. getting upset and melting face was after we let our beloved coordinator, RA, sleep through morning fellowship, and how unloving it was, and so on and on and on. What he apparently didn't know was that a couple weeks prior to that, RA himself had melted all of us for being too loud and waking him up as he overslept. Lessee. Heads, this guy oversleeps and we wake him up and get bytched out. Tails, this guy oversleeps, and we don't wake him and get bytched out. Of course, I was hot to go bang on his door, yell 'FIRE!!!' and run, but the person next to me wouldn't hear of it, him being The Man of God for Fellowlaborers of Ohio, you know. Of course the next year, our second, was rife with face meltings a la J** M**ne. I think it was a defense mechanism for his personal inadequacy. What a street bum! Can't believe he did our marriage ceremony. WG

On my phones the caller ID says "not provided". Dagwood Archie left a message. It is a fax machine being sent to the wrong number. However, I suspect it is suspicious as well. Though I must admit I once had a semi-listed phone number under the name of Maggie Muggins, to attempt to foil those who wanted to sell me a condo in Myrtle Beach, etc. WG

This afternoon, I got a call from an 866 number. A recorded voice informed me that I had a collect call from Franklin Correctional Institute. It went on to state that my carrier did not permit collect calls and in order to receive this call I would have to set up a prepaid account, using my Mastercard or Visa. At this point, I hung up. I checked the internet and there is a Franklin Correctional facility in Tennessee and one in Florida. There is a Franklin Pre-release center in Ohio, and of course Franklin County Jail. To the best of my knowledge, I do not know any inmates in any of these institutions. Has anyone else ever received a call like this? I ever so strongly suspect a scam. I've also been receiving calls today from "Dagwood Archie" in Texas someplace. Peanuts, Lucy and Snoopy have refrained from bothering me, however. WG

You know, Word Wolf, if you called ME a bytch, or a smartass, or ugly or stupid, it wouldn't matter. I don't really care what others think of me. What bothers me is you basically accused someone you don't actually know of something horrible. This is someone I do know, and well enough to say confidently he wouldn't have done what you are accusing him of. It's based on what is at best hearsay evidence that doesn't even mention him. That's just so unlike you. WG
-
Word Wolf, I'm not really into rumor control regarding who said what to whom when. Dr. Wierwille died in 1985, more than 20 years ago. I really don't care what or how much pain medication he took, or frankly how he got it. I had a friend in another state a long time ago who had chronic back pain and took a pain medication that was a controlled substance, carefully doled out to him in 30-day supply. He told me he could walk down any street in the town where he lived and buy twice as much, but he didn't because it wasn't right. So who's to say there were prescriptions written at all? My only objection is your insistence that a man I know personally be slandered. I worked as a medical secretary/transcriptionist for over 30 years and I know what such a rumor can do to a medical professional's reputation. I don't know the person who originally made the comment that security was running all over northwestern Ohio filling prescriptions. I do know it wouldn't be all that hard. I worked most recently in a department where physicians were supposed to keep their prescription pads locked in their desks, but a couple simply left them out in plain view. It would have been cake to slip into the office to deliver a few charts and walk out with a prescription blank in your pocket, make copies at your convenience and voila'! The physician whose integrity you question was a personal physician of VPW for years. And his first initial is not B, either. That's one of his brothers, who actually was on staff at one time, I think. WG
-
Word Wolf, The physician whose name you mention was NOT on staff at International. He was a surgeon in private practice in another city in Ohio, not all that close to New Knoxville. I worked for the man; I knew him to be a wonderful, ethical, moral physican who was ABSOLUTELY NOT on staff to crank out any prescriptions VPW wanted in any amount. FYI, pharmacies and other regulatory agencies keep track of this sort of thing. If in fact, people were running to New Bremen, Sidney, Van Wert, wherever to get multiple prescriptions for painkillers filled all the time, it would have caught up them sooner rather than later. Physicians who perform this sort of activity can be arrested, prosecuted and even lose their licenses. I think your comment comes very close to slander. You are suggesting that a very honorable man pimped drugs to VPW and I don't need to ask him to know that nothing could be further from the truth. WG

You know, Outfield, that's an excellent point. I have a wonderful 4 year old grandson, who is just learning to get along with peers. I've noticed that toddlers, when confronted with a social situation with other kids their age that they don't know how to deal with, often over-react. Example: Bobby is playing with blocks. He builds a tower. Johnny comes along and knocks the tower down. Bobby doesn't know how to handle his unhappiness at this intrusion, and kicks the crap out of Johnny. Example 2: Johnny is at the store with Mommy. Johnny wants a toy. Mommy says no. Johnny throws himself on the floor and kicks and screams. I guess what I'm getting at, in a round about way, is that children often don't know how to handle a situation where they have been thwarted in some manner or other, whether by a teacher, a peer, or a parent. So they kick, scream, bite and throw things. I wonder if some of these screaming TWI misfits never learned how to handle social situations and just went right back to Day Care in their minds? WG

When I was but a young'n in TWI I usually melted face right back. However, there really wasn't much of that going on in my early years, at least in my first year in TWI. By the time we reached the FWC however, I had lost a lot of my feistiness, unfortunately. I got melted for talking back to staff who were my senior corps and therefore always right. The reason doesn't bear explanation, it was stupid and a difference in training is all. I had been trained in woodsmanship by my dad one way, and Mi****l Jo****n another, and I simply mentioned it in passing. Well, what could my own father possibly know in comparison to a graduate of the WC? A great and mighty man of God in comparison to a relative of mine! How dare I? blah blah blah and yada yada yada. My dad had died less than a year before and I was devastated that some smart butt who never met him should deride him in such a contemptuous manner. So I sobbed and sobbed. Later, I realized it didn't matter a whit whether you followed the leader ten feet back so the branches didn't slap you in the face (The Way Corps way) or considerately held them aside for the person behind you (dad's way). The point of the matter was to break me, and to assist in the process of snuffing the light out of any individuality I might cling to. Come to think of it, I think a lot of face meltings were not to correct someone in the error of their way, but to break their spirit, humiliate them rather than humble them, and above all, squelch any shred of gumption they might have, any semblance of individuality. Kinda like communist Russia, you know? Sorry pals, I'm takin' my ownself back! I yam what I yam, and just try and stop me! WG

I am SOOOO jealous! A couple we know at church just got back from a two week vacation, inside passage cruise, car rental and drove around. There are only 4 highways in the entire extremely large state. You might want to drive up the coast if that is at all possible. Actually, I'm pretty glad you are going a year or so before we do, so's we can get some handy travel trips from our favorite expert. You do have a camera, don't you? And ditto for coming to Columbus, now that I am allegedly part time employed. WG

TWI Headquarters - a maintenance nightmare?
Watered Garden replied to igotout's topic in About The Way
I kinda agree that TWI will hold onto HQ and if they needed to sell something it would be Gunnison, which could be marketed as almost a resort. I've never been there so I don't really know what it's like. They cuold downsize in Ohio by selling some of the land. Personally, I would be sorry to see them get rid of HQ. As Shellon said, her children's father is buried there, as are others, excluding the founding three and their respective spouses. A simple study of where the money pits are would suffice, someone mentioned the OSC building, which never did look like a good idea to me. Farmland in NW Ohio is gold! You can grow anything there. That parking lot didn't grow great corn because the hallowed tires of the saints drove over it a couple times a year, but because it was in northwestern Ohio. Even a dim bulb like HA should know that! WG -
While I've noticed that many "black" people in our illustrious capital city do own pit bulls, I've also noticed a lot of "white" people being arrested for breeding and fighting pit bulls. In my opinion, dog fighting, cock fighting, etc. are all about the gambling. The laws should be enforced no matter who is breaking them or what flavor the offender. And just because you can say "it's a cultural thing" doesn't make it right. In Mississippi and other states in the 1960's it was a "cultural thing" for white people to lynch black people. Should Sheriff Bull Connor have been allowed to say, "Oh, I'm just calling out the dogs and fire hoses to protect the culture of white southerners."? I think not. WG

Waysider - There is a bit more of Watered Garden to love, but she still has hair the same color, (thank God for Clairol), just a bigger smile since she's no longer a TWIbot. Mr. Garden's hair is no longer red, but almost black with silver sideburns and almost silver mustache. In ten more years, he will look like Mark Twain. He has thrived (thriven)? on Watered Garden's excellent cooking. Those few of you whom I actually know, I picture as you were when we were younger, just wiser and a little more experienced with life its ownself. What I see on these pages is the heart of every one of you. I love you. WG

Try Blue Nile. They are okay. My former boss who was a physician married a guy who gave her an incredible solitaire he got from Blue Nile. WG

I seem to recall a verse along the lines of "My God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus." And I think Jesus said something about "Ask and ye shall receive"? I don't think God puts nearly as many limits on what we may and may not pray for as TWI did. WG

What Waysider said.... and If the leadership had realized that my son needed ADHD medication and some counselling, and had treated him with love and respect and compassion, rather than labelling him possessed and treating him like dirt on their shoes. If they had minded their own business and stayed out of my marriage. If WC had treated us like brothers and sisters rather than slaves. If leadership had recognized that our "earthly families" were just as important as they were to our lives. If they had taught that Jesus Christ is the savior of mankind, not LCM or VPW (IMO). And like most, we had NO idea about the sexual improprietries that went on. That in itself would have been an excellent reason to leave. And I don't think I could have stayed anyway. To much pressure after I was diagnosed with diabetes. WG

Absolutely, Notta. Genes ain't what they used to be, I'm afraid. At least slightly Unfortunately, researchers are still finding diseases that can be linked to smoking, in addition to Lung cancer, emphysema, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. I even heard once that there is thought that uterine cancer can be linked to smoking, at least partly. Plus the fact that long term smoking is hard on the skin, causing older people who are long time smokers to have wrinkles and lines radiating from their lips as if they had been stuck in a permanent pucker. All that said, I do support the individual's right to make their own decision about smoking. JUst don't do it around the kids, please. My grandson's mother, maternal grandmother, aunt and uncle all live at least part of the time in the same house and all four smoke like chimneys. He has a cough and wheeze all winter long. WG
-
Waysider, you are absolutely correct. Someone else had asked some medical question I was trying to answer. And darn right your lifestyle will get you if you don't watch out! I would mention smoking, which I used to do, but I am concerned about displeasing some folks here who smoke. Since I became a diabetic through no fault of my own (type 1 is pretty much genetic) I have learned a lot of tips about good diet, exercise and keeping my glucose under control. IF I don't and my kidneys, legs, heart, whatever give out on me, hey I was warned! Maybe VP thought he was invincible. WG

Does anyone remember hearing the live recording of "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" during which Elvis starts to snicker, then giggle, then absolutely, totally loses himself in hilarious laughter? It was recorded in a night club, and as Elvis began to sing, a chubby fellow sitting in front began to sweat profusely, as was doubtless Elvis himself. However, the guy in the audience was wearing a toupee, which he proceeded to yank off his head. He took out a hankie, wiped off his bald pate, and plunked the toupee back on his skull. This amused Elvis so much that he could hardly finish the song. Or at least that's the scenario some disk jockey related after playing it. I have no idea if that is what happened, but whatever it was sure tickled the King's funnybone! I think if Gladys had lived, Elvis would have had more of a chance at normalcy in his life. He actually had displayed a talent for acting in a motion picture made early on in which he did not sing, and there was enthusiasm on the part of producers for his continuing in that line of work, however, Colonel Parker would have none of Elvis becoming a serious actor and insisted on only the fluff he filmed with pretty girls and lots of music. Colonel Parker knew how to milk a cash cow dry. WG

Okay, here goes: I'm no expert, just a medical transcriptionist/secretary with an inquiring mind and pretty decent memory. I became involved with TWI because I was secretary to a general surgeon, now retired, who was rather well known in TWI and in fact signed VPW's death certificate. VPW died of metastatic malignant melanoma. Malignant melanoma is a particularly virulent cancer that generally has its primary site (original tumor) in the skin, though rarely the primary melanoma can be internal, such as in the lining of the stomach, or IN THE EYE, which is where the primary malignant melanoma was located that eventually caused the death of VPW. Hence the removal of the eye which contained the primary. Cancers are weird diseases. Certain primary cancers like to metastasize to certain organs. Colon cancer, for example, very very frequently metastasizes to the lungs. Breast cancer goes to the bones, lungs, and brain, and elsewhere also. Ocular melanoma, that begins as a primary tumor in an eye, likes to metastasize to the liver, as did VPW's. This does not necessarily mean that he had damaged his liver through overuse of alcohol; maybe he had, maybe not. It simply means that Ocular melanoma likes the liver. I don't know if there were other metastases to other organs. How do I, a mere humble peon of a secretary/transcriptionist know this? Because the secretary of the ophthalmologic surgeon who treated ocular melanoma told me so. We secretaries can be pretty smart cookies, you know! Nowadays they place a tiny plaque on the tumor in the eye. The plaque contains an appropriate amount of radioactive material to kill the tumor and hopefully save some of the sight in the affected eye. Time of course is of the essence, as with any cancer, the sooner the surgery, the more likely recovery. The tumor stays right there, but withers and does not grow or metastasize (hopefully). Okay, now for some discussion on another comment or two: We live in a corrupted world. The world began to corrupt the moment Adam and Eve walked out of the garden, and it has continued to do so until this very milimicron of a nanosecond, and will do so until God decides it's time for us all to come home. Our physical bodies are corruptible flesh. The older we get, the more it breaks down, just like the world it lives in, but at a greater rate. For anyone to blame the ill person for their illness is just plain wrong, and that is what the socalled law of believing did, eventually. I've written before about my experience with TWI after being diagnosed with insulin dependent diabetes. No one offered to pray with me or minister to me. Instead, I was asked (by a sister-in-law of LCM) "Do you understand WHAT IT IS THAT YOU DID that caused this to happen to you?" I was watched closely and criticized greatly, for I had obviously sinned or I wouldn't be taking insulin, now, would I? Perhaps some of this false doctrine had already crept in to TWI by the time VPW was dying of his cancer. Certainly, the shame and horror of having this very person who had taught, and I definitely remember being taught, that cancer was caused by a devil spirit possession because cancer is a disease that has life of itself (like HELL IT DOES) dying of cancer himself. I agree with the comment someone made about the chemicals and carcinogens that are corrupting just about everything. It would be interesting to research rates of death from, say, colon cancer in the USA versus other countries where the common diet is high in fiber and low in highly processed foods and red meat. That has been accomplished, and the results were astonishing. People who eat lots of raw or lightly steamed veggies, raw fruits, and only smaller amounts of chicken and fish seldom suffer adenocarcinoma of the colon, which is a fairly common killer in the USA. Melanoma is primarily a disease of sun-loving white people. There are other forms of skin cancer caused by overexposure to sunlight, but melanoma is the one that will TAKE YOU OUT quickly and efficiently. I think, IMO only, that it is not inconceivable that the lights used in filming PFAL may well have burned VPW's eyes interiorly so that eventually he did develop this melanoma. Though it seems it would have developed at a time much closer to the event. So that's all I know and a few opinions thrown in for good measure. WG
