Before people can "get over" certain things, they themselves must perceive the actual need to get over them. Like Dr. Phil says, they need to see the payoff. They themselves must see how haboring hatred, anger, guilt, fear (or whatever it is) is actually hurting them and possibly those around them. This of course assumes that "get over it" is used in a helpful and concerned manner and is not just something said to get someone to shut up cause we don't want to hear it.

Mo, I think you may be making some inexact assumptions here. For example, Paul was born in Tarsus to Hebrew parents of the tribe of Benjamin. Tarsus is in what is now known as modern Turkey. However, Turkey did not exist as a country in Paul's time. The ethnic people of Turkey today are not necessarily the same as those who live there in the times of Paul. And like today's Turkey, the residents of ancient Tarsus consisted of various groups of diverse "racial" makeup. During Paul's time, Tarsus was an autonomous Roman city populated by , Greeks, Romans, Jews and other ethinic groups. By race/ethnicity Paul was Jewish. Not Turkish. Likewise, because Aquila was found at Rome on one occasion, does not necessarily mean he was "Italian".

Hi Sogwap, It may not be a definition, but one one thing that can lead to huge misunderstandings is the misuse use of or the failure to use the words: all, some, many or few. If a peson means "all', then say all. If they mean "some" then say "some" ... If they mean a "few" .. then say a "few" ..... What happens is that "some" people will read "all" into what is said when what was really meant was "some" or a "few". Another thing I learned in a Human Communication course, is that sometimes it helps to say what we are not talking about -- in order to help make clear what we are talking about. Example. Roy, Roy, it's not a question of whether the spirit of God lies or not. It's a question of whether or not people who claim the be taught by the spirit of God - actually are. There are lots of folks like yourself claiming that the spirit taught them something - yet these things many times disagree from person to person - same spirit. IIs the spirit lying? It seems these days that the "prophets" many times get conflicting information from the same spirit ..... or maybe they aren't getting it from the spirit in first place? So, I see your approach no less prone to error and misunderstandings than an approach that does not ignore scripture, historical facts and other evidences - things that can be learned by the "five senses". Certainly the Christ within can help lead us to greater understanding of spiritual things, but if I want learn if the Bible was originally written in Greek or Aramaic, I am not going to ignore documented history, cultural information, scripture and abandon rational thinking and just let the spirit teach me ....I think all these things work together.

Thanks for bringing that up again Garth. I am aware of the dual usage. Mo seems to want to exclude/ignore the more common usage of the term "Jew" in favor of a singular usage where "Jew" ONLY means people identified with the religion of Judaism regardless of their ethnic or ancestral origins. It seems to me that the two are so closely interwoven, that such a narrow definintion muddies the waters in a discussion such as this. Even the Jews themselves struggle and debate as to what consititutes a Jew ... I kindly disagree Mo. And so would millions of "Jews". -- "Jew" or "Jewish" generally refers to a race/ethnicity of people . "Judaism" refers to the religion. Judaism has it roots within a particular ethnic group. Christianity does not - so your example doesn't apply too well. In light of what I just shared, DNA is quite relevant to this topic.

Koine Greek was the 'lingua franca' in the eastern part of ther Roman Empire in the times of Jesus . The lingua franca is the common language of the people and the language used for trade and commerce. Jesus, Paul and the other disciples/apostles would have been fluent in both Greek and Aramaic( Arabic). Being a Roman citizen, Paul would probably have spoken Latin as well. By the time of Jesus, Palestine had long been Hellenized. The Septuagint (the Greek OT) was the version of the OT most widely accepted by the hellenized Jews of Jesus' time. It is probably the Septuigant that Jesus read from. Why would Paul write to the churches at Corrinth, Galatia, etc in Aramaic when these folks didn't speak or understand it? My bet is that most of the NT was originally penned in Greek. There is evidence that Matthew may have been penned in Matthew's native tongue. (Hebrew ? Aramaic?) I dount that VPW "lied" about this. His research was just sloppy and biased IMO.

I have never been fat. 5' 9" - 155 lbs. Same as when I graduated HS in 1972. -- I probably couldn't gain weght if I wanted to. But, I have high cholesterol, CHD and PVD. I am convinced that metabolism and genetics play a significant role in the weight/cholesterol issues. The ONLY way I can reduce my choleseterol is with drugs - statins. To understand what "get over it" means I think you have to consider the context in which it was said. Here are some examples: Bob: VPW plagairized from Stiles. VPW was dishonest. Bill: Why are you so angry? Don't you have anything better to do than throw rocks at Doctor Wierwille? You need to get over it and move on. Suzie: I was sexually abused by a TWI leader. I hate that SOB. I hope he burns in hell. Bob: That is terribIe. I can't possibly imagine how you must feel. But why still allow him the power to upset you so much? If you can somehow find a way to forgive him, then maybe you can get over it and move beyond the pain and hurt that you seem to be holding on to. Suzie: I was sexually assualted by a TWI leader. TWI was not all peaches and cream. Bill: "IF" If that did happen (and I doubt it ) you just need to get over it. He was just human. You have sins too. Regardless of your alleged abuse - I still had lots of fun in TWI - PFAL still helped me a lot. I know these are not great examples but, they may show how the context can help understand what is meant by the person saying "get over it". There is not just one single meaning.

Telling someone to "get over it" is kinda like when someone tells another that smoking is bad for them and they ought to quit. They could be interested in the person's health, but more times than not, they just don't want to smell the smoke.

Welcome to GS Jaylawt .... So you are saying that you didn't actually see the article? OK. The last one I know about from "Time" was in about 1971 or 72. Of course there could have been one that I missed. I was hoping you actually knew first hand. Time did do an expose on Scientology in the 90's. Maybe TWI got an honorable mention or something. But TWI seems to have been off the Top 10 cult radar for quite some time. Thus my question.
