Combination, To find out all about it go to The Atkins Diet Homepage and read all about it. Sorry.. bread is very high in carbs. You can have all the meat and seafood you want but the veggies have to be the low carb veggies like spinach, asparagus, broccoli, squash, tomatos, cucumbers etc.. they have a complete list at the Atkins site and you can even download a carb counter that gives you the carb content of most foods. But I'm telling you right off that you'll have to give up flour products (like bread), potatoes in any form, corn and rice. We're talking starches. Also, no sugar either. So its a tough diet for some people who love all those forbidden items. But for those of us who love most veggies and don't have a particular sweet tooth its great. sudo

He died today Prof whose 'last lecture' became a sensation dies. I admired his attitude. sudo

Ron, You mentioned how not eating breakfast is not a good thing. What do you do though if you're just not hungry in the mornings? Make yourself eat? I used to eat my sardines every morning after doing my power walking and showering. Now I'm not at all hungry until about mid-morning. I know what the studies say.. that those who skip breakfast are much more likely to be overweight but it doesn't seem wise to me to force myself to eat. Rocky.. I think this has been a good informative thread and I'm not wanting to argue. I think you just missed what Belle had posted: "There is some benefit to cardio, but the benefits do not include weight loss. NOVA did a documentary on average joe citizens training for a marathon and not one of them lost any weight despite all the extra cardio they were doing. Exercise is good for making one hungry, not for losing weight." The reason I was surprised is that its exactly the opposite of one of those "truths" we were all taught. Which is just ANOTHER reason why I have a jaundiced eye to what the "experts" tell us. sudo

Belle, So cardio exercise doesn't help you lose weight eh? Well do tell. Do you think that in 5 years the studies will say the exact opposite? The thing is, though.. you have to look at the studies to know these kinds of things. My saying what worked for me is just anecdotal evidence. I liked your links. The scientist and the stair master was particularly informative. But weight loss or no, I think most people who exercise say they feel a lot better and its been shown to reduce all cause mortality. If you do a Google search on mortality and exercise, lots of studies pop up showing this but here's a link that's not too long to read..Exercise and Mortality So the bottom line is that exercise IS good for you... even if it doesn't make you lose weight, huh? sudo

Rocky, You guys mentioned exercise and it hasn't come up yet about the Atkins diet but he said you HAD to exercise. It was non-negotiable. I had the same experience you did when I started limiting my carbs. I was losing weight but not that much. I started doing brisk "power walking" every morning and the pounds started pouring off . I was eating like a pig because on a low carb diet calories aren't counted. Every week I'd get on the scales and I had lost another 5lbs. It was like magic. I've heard "experts" say that the reason exercise (even just walking) works so well is that otherwise the body thinks its going into starvation mode and the metabolism changes to keep the weight on for use when there is no food. But I say "experts" for a reason. You can't trust what the "experts" say. They don't really KNOW as the study I posted in my firsts post points out. That's one of the reasons I am SUCH a cynic on almost everything and dogmatic on next to nothing. sudo

Rocky, That's some mighty fortified pasta you've got there. Here's what I get for pasta's nutritional value from going to "pasta" on Wikipedia: Pasta, dry, unenriched Nutritional value per 100 g (3.5 oz) Energy 370 kcal 1550 kJ Carbohydrates 75 g - Starch 62 g - Sugars 2 g - Dietary fibre 3 g Fat 1.5 g Protein 13 g Water 10 g Folate (Vit. B9) 18 μg 5% Percentages are relative to US recommendations for adults. Source: USDA Nutrient database This has been a good thread so far I think. The whole point for my starting it was that the latest two year study backs up all the other studies showing the low carb diet as the best at losing weight AND showing a better lipid profile to boot. Yet.. its against our natures to accept it. Click on Belle's Taubes on the study And at the end (its a short article) read the first comment. I think you'll find it interesting. And BTW.. you're right about my credentials. I'm not trying to pass myself off as a nutritional expert. I'm just a dentist. But like Belle and Rejoice, I've done extensive study on the subject. Oh, and your statement: "Atkins, for the longterm, IS setting yourself up for problems with digestive organs." I'm thinking you're saying that because it seems to you that must be what would happen, no? I haven't seen anything about the Atkins diet in any study that wasn't pretty good. If you think about it, the Eskimo diet is all meat. There's not much plant life that grows in the snow. In fact, it was the fact that the Inuit don't get heart disease that baffled everybody and started the search for why that was. But I try not to be too dogmatic about the low carb diet because there are people like you who've also lost weight doing other diets. Some folks just can't stand eating low carb and Weight Watchers works for them. But the evidence is mounting with each study that it is INDEED carbs that both make people fat and raise their cholesterol... not fat. But lots of people just won't accept it. sudo

Chas, You're right about the ketosis. During the induction phase of a strict Atkins diet the body usually does go into ketosis. I think its a valid concern too though it doesn't seem to hurt anything in the short run. After induction, though enough carbs are allowed to avoid ketosis. Rocky... pasta is one of those refined processed carbohydrates. I think its precisely those kinds of carbs that are the problem in the usual cases of obesity. The typical pasta is made from bleached white flour and doesn't contain just a whole lot of nutrition, IMO. sudo

Brushstroke, No matter how rude the police get with you, never respond in kind. Always say "Yes sir/Ma'am no sir/ma'am". Thank them for being vigilant and apologize for making them take up their time with you. Being at ALL argumentative just gets you a sure fire traffic ticket for "not giving turn signals" (that's a big one around here.. how they pull over suspected drug couriers on the interstate) or whatever pops into the cop's head. Remember too that these guys can haul you down to the jail for no reason at all on your part and get away with it. Oh, sure they'll have to release you the next day and maybe without any charges but you've spent a night in jail for "questioning" or "suspicious behavior" or whatever the local court requires them to say to be able to do this. The police have a lot of power to make your life miserable even if it turns out OK in the end. sudo

Ron, You lost all that weight by going low carb it appears ("sugar, white flour, pasta, white rice, potatoes etc.") but then you talk about determining calorie requirements. I don't know if you've ever read one of Dr. Atkins' books but he advocates counting calories too in cases where the weight isn't coming off fast enough by just counting carbs. Weight loss and gain basically comes down to calories don't you think? That's why I think some people do great on programs like Weight Watchers. And if you read the link in my first post you'll see that the low carb diet was also the one that had the fewest people sticking with it for the whole 2 years. Some people just have to have their sweets and starches. But the evidence is mounting in study after study that the carbs are the real killers... not fat. Oh, there is one killer fat... trans fat. It is very very deadly and is probably the number one reason that we've had the heart attack epidemic starting in the early 20th century, IMO!! sudo

Belle, Thanks for the compliment! And good link to Gary Taubes book. I haven't read it but its the gist of what I really had in mind when I started this thread.. What if the conventional wisdom (low fat is healthy) is wrong? What if its all a big fat lie? In answer to Rocky, my numbers are very similar to Highway29's... I lost 65-70lbs, my good cholesterol went way up and my bad cholesterol plummeted! I went from 225 down to about 165lbs. That was 4years ago and the very important thing is this.. I had KEPT it off! I've gained back nearly 10lbs this year though because I got really sloppy about the carbs. I'm back in low carb mode again now to get back where I was. Then I can slack off a little bit if I really want to. Thing is, though.. I LIKE low carb for the most part. Contrary to popular opinion a low carb diet (you're right Cynic.. I meant Atkins) should not be a meat and cheese diet. What you give up are unhealthy starches.. potatoes, corn, flour products etc. What you should be doing is eating the healthy low carb vegetables.. Brussels sprouts, asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, greens, zucchini or other squashes etc... salads I can go on and on but Man... I'm talking high nutrition. Low carb especially when combined with the Mediterranean diet (add olive oil and lots of fish instead of red meat) is very very healthy, IMO. But this is a thread for discussion.. does anyone see things differently or are we all in agreement here? sudo P.S. I eat a lot of sardines, Cynic. The small ones with the bones that are too tiny to taste. That not only gives me all the omega3's that I need but 25% of my daily calcium as well. In addition I take only one supplement.. two Calcium and vitamin D tablets a day.

You guys probably have already seen this as the low carb diet STILL wins in all the studies. Click HERE! for the link. The American Heart Association just can't admit its been wrong all these years with their low fat theory. But study after study has confirmed that Adkins was right all along. And the best part? There are no calorie restrictions on the low carb diet like there are on the Mediterranean and low fat diets. We've talked about this before but when I lost all my weight on the low carb diet I ate like a pig. Its like magic... you eat all you want but limit the carbs.. and the pounds just melt off. No will power other than not eating starch and sweets. Here's some before and after pics of me. BEFORE After sudo

Raf, Chantix seems to work wonders for a lot of people. Are you having any Chantix dreams? There are a lot of odd known side effects in a substantial number of users. One thing about the tobacco habit though is the high rate of recidivism. People can have it completely out of their system and then start smoking 6 months or so later. My father-in-law had quit for 5 years when he decided to stop by a convenience store and buy a pack of cigarettes. He then smoked up until he died in his early 70's. sudo

Well Jeast.. THIS just makes me grin all over.. finally.. the lyrics to Joe Cocker's Woodstock's performance. sudo

Claud*tte R. how did she feel about what was going on?
Sudo replied to fooledagainII's topic in About The Way
I've been around here a long time. There are just a handful of us left that go back to the beginning of WayDale. I say that for all you new folks because the old timers know about my collection of sounds and videos I can post. I happened to have found an old song on my computer's hard drive (OK, I knew exactly where it was) and thought I'd post a snippet here. I DO have the whole thing of course for anyone interested. Man.. can that lady get down. Click HERE! sudo (thinking about maybe posting tunes again) -
Rocky, Re:"The music he has playing at his web site is VERY good!" If you like that sort of thing, I guess. I could post a Beethoven sonata that wouldn't get high marks with this crowd you do know. But it just so happens that I have tune most everyone here will like.. I'll just make you go to another thread or ask for it here. Hereeeee's the link HERE!!! Anyone want some more of it? sudo

Oakspear, 50 huh?? Great birthday dude. I hope you have 50 more!!! sudo
