Krys, Re:"Sudo, professional addiction counselors say that nicotiene is more compelling than heroin." I'm well aware of that. We even had an addiction specialist speak to our local dental society. We dentists have to prescribe lots of addicting drugs. The general consensus among us (especially we older dentists) was that it was balderdash that nicotine is very addicting. Not to say people don't have a hard time quitting but the next day after they quit cigarettes, what are people doing? They're at work.. dying for a cigarette. What's a morphine addict doing the next day?? He's curled up in a ball, puking his guts. Question.. which drug is most addictive? It's politically correct these days to call nicotine the most addictive substance known to man. It's ludicrous, IMO. sudo
-
Raf, You started smoking 18 months ago? Man, that is soooooo atypical. That's not the kind of thing you're wanting to hear, I know but inquiring minds want to know... how did that happen?? sudo P.S. I quit smoking cold turkey after having picked up the habit while in TWI.. seems like everyone smoked and I got to thinking I was invincible because of my BELIEVING! Ha! Anyways.. it ain't that hard. These folks coming out and saying nicotine is the most addictive substance known are full of it, IMO!!

Kathy, You're getting a glimpse of what it was like to be a little boy back in the '60's. Amazingly I remember a lot of it, though clearly, not as much as Hiway29. In addition to comic books (I didn't know ANY little girls who read them.. I wonder why??) I collected marbles. Kept them in a big athletic sock. I remember Superman comics describing life on Bizarro world. They did everything backwards from the way it was on Earth and one example they gave was that they put bottles of milk out on the porch at night and the milkman picked them up and left them empties. They invited readers to send in examples. The little girls were playing with Barbies and watching Shirley Temple movies. I have to admit.. I liked Shirley Temple, too, but couldn't admit it around the other little boys. sudo

Hey, Wasn't Bizarro world in a big bottle Spuerman kept at his North Ice palace?? sudo (realizing Kathy probably never read the comic books)

Geo, Re:"Are you still working the GWTW connection? (the star of that series played one of Scarlet's suitors, IIRC)" You're ahead of me here. A series?? sudo (clueless -->)

Hiway29, Please DO jump in! You have a lot of knowledge on these things judging from your past posts. Looks like I'm going to have to give hints.. no one seems to know it. :D--> sudo (ducking)

That theme wasn't much of a head scratcher, hmmm? Folks know the quotes because Gone With The Wind is a part of Americana today. Did you guys know that several of the principals are still alive? Olivia de Havviland (Melanie), Evelyn Keyes (Suellen O'Hara who gets her beau Frank Kennedy stolen from her), Ann Rutherford (younger O'hara sister Careen who was better known from Andy Hardy movies) and even Alicia Rhett who played Ashley's sister India Wilks. All alive and as far as I know doing well. And here's something to think about. Alicia Rhett just celebrated her 90th birthday. Assuming her character (India Wilks) was 15 years old at the end of the civil war, that would mean that if there had been a REAL India Wilks.. she would have been 90 years old when Gone With The Wind was made in 1939. Odd to think there were people living when Gone With The Wind was made, that were alive during the civil war and remembered it well. The next one may be more challenging for those under 50 unless you saw it in syndication. I'm posting it because it was my all time favorite TV show as a kid growing up. Click HERE! sudo

I have times where I can't get in at all. It's like either I can get in fine... or I can't get in at all. :(--> Anybody else experiencing that??? sudo

"And now, my beauties! ... something with poison in it, I think; with poison in it, but attractive to the eye and soothing to the smell!.. Poppies ... poppies ... poppies will put them to sleep ... sleep ... now they'll sleep ..." sudo

Paw made it official. So here's the brand spanking new genuine plastic {{Official}} Nostalgia thread for Nostalgics of all ages everywhere. I guess it makes sense to post the most nostalgic theme on the very first post. If only there were consensus on what that theme might be. Since I'm first, I'll post my entry into the movie catagory but be my guest to post your most nostalgic catagories.. TV.. commercials.. whatever. This is the best movie ever made, IMHO, but it'll be interesting to see what everybody else thinks. Click HERE! Even if you guys don't share my opinion that this was the best, you have to agree its very very good, no? sudo P.S. From the temporary digs thread.. Click HERE!

Movie quote.. My eldest daughter and I have watched this movie three times together. Did great box office but only so-so at the Oscars. Here's one of the best movie lines, IMO. Click HERE! Fun movie! sudo

Ala Prochaine, C'est moi, c'est moi, 'twas I. :D--> sudo

Hiway29, I can understand Geo's perceptions and maybe it's a good thing I never got freaked out. But I feel similarly as you. My brother and I LOVED Laurel and Hardy as teenagers and young adults. I think Geo's problem is he never watched them when he was stoned. :D--> New theme.. click HERE! sudo

J, We're thinking of you, girl, though we don't see your font nearly as often as we would like. Happy Birthday!!! sudo
-
Dante, Thanks you for the info but I've about decided on an LG DVD burner because it handles the DVD-RAM format my Panasonic DVD recorder uses. My problem is finding the appropriate software to rip DVD's, edit them.. and then burn a brand new DVD. sudo
-
Guys.. Looks like my editing didn't stump ANY of you. So here's the complete version.. mp3... hope Lroom's up to it. :)--> Click HERE! for a happy song!!! Hiway29... Re:"Oliver Hardy never said "This is another fine mess"." Break my heart guy. I just KNEW he said that. Musta' been another NICE mess he was saying. sudo

Geeze Kathy.. You sound like you're getting discouraged or something. We post tunes and themes from 100's of movies and no one expects anyone else to know 'em all. This ain't no big deal. The theme that sounded familiar to you and Wasway said had Weasally kids was Harry Potter. And the tune from the Russian composer was Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet. Nice music, huh? Which is something I like to do here. Post some tunes that I LOVE but are not maybe well known. Did I mention that I was a classically trained musician (French Horn) and went through Ole Miss on a band scholarship?? So here's two more.. One (click HERE!) from a Disney film you would surely know if I hadn't edited it. and the other (click HERE!) I'm not expecting anyone to know but it should at least SOUND familiar. And I'll give you these hints about what movie it came from...Leopold Stokowski was the conductor, Bach was the composer and the movie was made in 1940. Any help?? Maybe not, Kathy, but enjoy the selections!! sudo
-
Wasway, Yes.. there were weasely little kids in the second one (HERE!). Kathy... hint to stir the memory... The first one (HERE!)was a RUSSIAN composer. sudo (having fun! :)-->)
-
Kathy, Are we talking about a couple of guys with tool belts? On PBS?? Oh, probably not but I tried. Now here's to test your memory. We don't have the old thread to refer back to so see if you remember what this was.. click HERE! You said that you liked it even though you weren't sure what it was from. And then I posted the answer. I bet everyone's forgotten!! And here's a new one but... just the first few seconds which should be sufficient. It's a movie theme. And a fun movie at that. Well.. actually, there was more than one movie that used this theme. Click HERE! sudo P.S. The tune I posted yesterday was Jafar's Hour from Alladin. I have a buncha' Disney themes to post.

Hi guys.. That's what happens when you try to do something when you REALLY don't have the time. I was flying trying to get out the door to take my 13 year old son to his basketball game. Wanted to get something posted this weekend. The problem is that Lroom.org has a DSL connection and I've never seen it push more than 270Kbs upstream. And on top of that.. they're having bandwidth problems today. Sorry guys. Click HERE! and hear it. Wasway.. I don't know why you're being re-directed on the link. Yes, the main Lroom page has moved but Lroom.org is still operational. Sorry again. sudo
-
Kathy, Frankly My dear.. I think you knew it, too. :D--> Kinda' slow on weekends around here huh?? Hmmm.. here's an excerpt from my favorite recent(Last 20 years)Disney movie. Not really expecting ANYONE to know it because... I wouldn't have recognized it right off the bat myself. But it's good music.. and since most folks here are using broadband.. I didn't even bother to convert it. Click HERE! Sounds pretty good in stereo, huh?? I'll see if I can find something a little more interesting later. sudo

Dmiller, Re:"I'm on aol here at the house, and never get any pop-ups at all." You never go to the Drudge Report?? It has pop-ups and I would have thought you'd have gone there now and then. Try it.. http://www.drudgereport.com and just see. Hard to believe you never get ANY dang pop-ups though the SP2 for XP helped a lot. You're exactly the person I was looking for, though. The number of people just hunky dory with dial-up. I don't guess you ever tried clicking on the tunes down on the Nostalgia thread did you? If so.. did they play alright?? sudo

Paw, You're trying to cut down on total posts. Unless I hear a hue and cry to the contrary from 'Nostalgics' here, I say delete them all and let me start a brand new thread. You get to cut 1000's of posts and we get to start over. The Nostalgia thread is unique here at the Greasespot, Paw. More posts than 'THE' or even 'Oxygenated and sanctified water'. We get folks popping in for a theme or two and then leaving. Folks who sit and visit for a while. And lotsa' lotsa' folks who visit but never post. Themes that were posted over a year ago are like new to many visitors. We've been doing this for over 4 years now (Pirate is good at keeping up with the exact date) and that's a lot of posts that virtually no one goes back to read. Let me know your thinking here and we'll go from there. sudo P.S. Geo knew it. Here it is for everyone else. Click HERE! Anyone else know where it's from??

Wayfer Not, Thank you. I'm having a hard time finding someone who really knows something about this. It looks like I'm going to have to be able to edit VBO files. You mind asking your hubby how he would do that?? My combo DVD recorder VCR can create different formats but NOT DVD-video. I want to transfer home movies in the highest quality I can and presently it is taking the DVD recorder two DVD's to do the job. I want to take those 2 DVD's... copy 'em both to my computer... and then make just ONE DVD out of the both of them. Maybe I ask for too much.. Paw... I think they did that to you on purpose to prevent copying, you think?? sudo

Galen, I had forgotten about Net Zero and other free internet providers. Yeah, I tried Net Zero once just to see and yes you're correct.. you have to watch ads to get the service. It appeared Vickles wasn't talking about those outfits to me. But I hear that often.. some people think that they get more pop-ups by connecting to the internet with one provider over another. I don't see how that could happen. It's the web sites that place those pop ups after all. sudo
