Hiway29, Way to go. I remember only two kinds of Popeye cartoons from my youth. The old ones and the new ones. That's about all I could tell as a kid but it was obvious which ones were which. I never could figure out why Brutus OR Popeye would be interested in skinny homely Olive Oyl. Here's the novelty song I promised. You all will remember it because you're all old guys like me. The only question will be how much you remember.. like who performed it.. what year did it come out... what's the classical music that's used etc.. As we've done before, answer how many notes or seconds it took before you knew it to anything else ya'll want to contribute, if you would. Was this not one of the most popular novelty songs?? That's how I remember it anyways. Click HERE! sudo

Rick, Re:"I actually take offense to that Sudo, as, I have NEVER answered a question that I googled the answer for without saying I googled. it." OK OK.. so I never caught you cheating. It sounded good at the time, though. Oh, I know... it was Paw (not here to defend himself) who got caught cheating!! Yeah... That's the ticket. sudo (who's gonna' have to post that novelty song tonight due to response it looks like)

Hiway29, Re:"..I was just trying to ferret out the answer without going to the source-that is the point of the game isn't it?" BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!!Cut it out! You're killing me!! Everyone cheats on this thread. Well, maybe not everyone. But Bluzeman does. I caught him once. And Pirate?? Why do you think they call him 'Pirate'?? Hmmm??? I just KNOW the guy cheats!! And Wasway?? The guy's an ex-cult member, dude!! Need I say more?? Now Kathy is probably as pure as the driven snow but... she's the exception. Aw.. we usually come out and admit it but let's say you didn't know 'fer sure who starred with Errol Flynn in all those movies... 'ya could just go to the (IMDB).. find out... and then post as if you knew it off the top of your head. As long as you DON'T SAY whether or not you knew it right off... well... people can assume what they want.. right??? . Hee-hee! I promised some fun stuff didn't I?? I don't know what I was thinking but I have one of the all time best novelty songs of the 60's but didn't post it. It's one all of you.. (and that's 'all' without exception ) have heard and liked. Liked? Dare I say it? Could it be... loved??? Yes but I'm not posting it now. Maybe I'll post it tomorrow. After all.. tomorrow is ******* ***. Today, I'm posting a fun one that my wife and daughters love. I get a little worried about my daughters listening to this.. they're still teenagers and not supposed to know about these things. But it IS pretty dang funny... Click HERE! sudo

Hiway29, I understand. Not everyone is an old movie buff and we really do very little old movies stuff here. Harder to get good theme songs for one thing. It's the weekend and folks are busy doing other things but before giving it all away.. here's another pic of our Robin Hood and Maid Marian. And no... it's not Scarlett :D-->. :(-->. Now I'm going to give away one of our poorly kept secrets, Hiway29... the source for finding movies, TV shows, who was in them, when they were made, biographies of stars, directors etc.. It's The Internet Movie Database (IMDB). http://us.imdb.com/search/ Just search for 'Robin Hood' for instance and you'll see all the movies and TV movies and shows that had Robin Hood in the name. Click on the one made in 1938 and you'll see who was in it. If you're an old movie buff, you can follow the links all day long. sudo

Ahhh... Wasway knows. And I was just going to give some hints, too. May STILL have to give some hints but Wasway did just fine ;)-->. Hey! Anybody planning on hanging out here much this weekend?? I have some stuff I can post if there's any interest. sudo P.S. How the co-star looks today....

Hiway29, The pic is of Gypsy Rose Lee. But, as you said, the song is from Gypsy a Sondheim-Styne composition written for it. You caught me a little off guard because after reading your post... I'm not sure which version I had. I really wanted to post a pic of a at least semi-clothed Gypsy Rose. She was quite an entertainer in an era where an exotic dancer didn't have to do sleazy things to keep her job. Now I get to post another lady's pic. I saw her interviewed on TCM last week and she looks great. Sounds great. :)-->. sudo P.S. Hey, Hiway29, if you want to learn how to post stuff like this, too, e-mail me (sudo2u@gmail.com) and I'll show you how because, man, I think you'd stump us all!! :D-->

Kathy, That's the MOD Squad. I watched it some but wasn't a big fan for some reason. The black guy, Link, made the biggest impression on me because he was so... well... black. The few black stars that preceded him on TV (like Julia) or in most movies made for white audiences (I'm thinking of Poitier) were very non-threatening. But Link was different. The first thing was that Afro, wasn't it? That was very black-radical when it came out. Anybody remember Angela Davis?? He wore shades that hid what he was looking at. Spoke very little. And was, at least to me, intimidating. That's what I remember. Your mileage may vary. sudo

Shellon, She's OURS now, you hear?? Hands off!!! sudo

Happy Birthday Ahat!!!!!!!!! Here's wishing you a very special day! Kiss those babies once for me! sudo

Kathy, I agree.. the man's good. I never saw any Bosko cartoons and I'm wondering if those type of things will ever be shown again. I can't even remember the last time I saw a Betty Boop cartoon. Uh, gots a new tune.. click on the pic of the lady singing it. sudo

Wasway, Man, those are great! Is there any doubt that Ray Stevens is the master of the novelty song? Of all those you posted I'm hard pressed to pick out a favorite but my favorite lyric would have to be from Surfin' USSR... "Thought the girls were bewitchin' back in Moscow U. 'Til we saw the little honeys here in Malibu. One look through the prescope and we all flipped. It was a mutiny aboard the People's Ship." But you didn't post my all time favorite Ray Stevens novelty tune and I remember sending you the MP3 some years ago, too! My how the time flies by on this Nostalgia thread, huh? But here it is in the 'scaled-down-easy-to-play-for dial-up' version --> . Click HERE! sudo (who needs a new Rolex, too)

Stayed, Re:"Attending my first ever UU gathering this morning reminded me of a social services meeting.....Figure I'll go back next week for a second look." Depends on what people are looking for. Some would be interested in nothing less than being slain-in-the-spirit rolling on the floor in delirium. Enraptured by being possesed by their Lord. Others, wanting a little less fervor would say that rolling on the floor is wickedness and The Devil's work... that true worship is S.I.T. with all faculties intact and not looking like someone having an epileptic seizure. Still others are uncomfortable with any kind of talking gibberish no one can understand and say gifts of the spirit (or manifestations if you prefer) died with the Apostles or aren't needed today to convert the heathen or whatever... You ain't doing it in THEIR midst, thank-you-very-much. And then, you have those who are uncomfortable with Christian ethnocentricism.. the belief that only Christians are saved.. all others consigned to some other nebulous domain after death. They feel uneasy when public prayers are said "in the name of Jesus Christ". And then you have folks like me, StayedTooLong, who think theists are like little kids who believe in Santa Claus.. only... they NEVER grow up!! The less demanding their religion, the better for the world. No infidels to kill. No lands to conquer for the True Religion. But realizing how people LOVE to believe and get great satisfaction from invoking the gods, I try to fit in as best I can. I even teach a Sunday School class at a church where people generally don't know the difference between the Gospels and the Epistles. It's easy to teach... and I probably sound a lot like what you're hearing from the Unitarian Universalists... that being happy and contented is paramount because quite frankly, this life is all we know for sure that we have. So.. be kind to your fellow man. Do for others as you would have them do for you. sudo

Well, At least it was good chatting with you today, Suz. I'm still getting used to being able to make free long distance phone calls with cell phones. Hope to catch you next visit!! Take care!! sudo

And for another tune they did that was popular(and there weren't very many) click HERE! As you listen to it, ask yourself why we don't have fun songs like that coming out and being played on the radio today. I mean, they were so common back then. Remember Ahab the Arab?? All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth? Alvin wanting a Hula Hoop for Christmas? Even if there WERE a novelty song today, would they not be asking for something a little more vulgar at Christmas. I'm sick of of the coarsening of our culture. But I rant and rave.. Now for something that makes the heart glad and lightens the soul, click HERE! Who's doing the duet with Shirley Temple?? Ahh.. some wonderful movies. sudo
-
Linda Z, How about that?? Small world indeed. I have a neighbor who ran into another neighbor in London, England a few years ago. Neither knew the other was going to be there. I had the impression that Way kids weren't treated so well in the local schools, though. sudo
-
Anybody up for another novelty song?? The group that made this has Memphis connections, so I thought it was just a local hit back when it came out. They had their biggest hit a year or two BEFORE this one came out but... I prefer this one. Click HERE! I don't think this group did anything BUT novelty songs and I liked most of them. sudo
-
Congrats, Shell!!! So... what's the grandchild going to call you?? Grandma?? Grandmother?? Granny??? Hee-hee! sudo
-
I haven't seen those old old cartoons in many many years. My son still watches a ton of cartoon network even though he's 14 years old but I don't think they have ANY old stuff. sudo

Oak, I've had the pleasure of your being my roommate at the last two Weenie Roasts. Naturally, I'll assume that arrangement won't change for future Weenie Roasts so I have just one question... will Susie's snoring disturb us?? :o--> sudo
-
Wacky, Re:Sudo...would you travel to Rome? to pay respects to the pope? I'm shocked that you're shocked..." Naw.. the Pope meant next to nothing to me, personally, but he was a good man and meant a lot to millions of people. It's not hard at all for me to understand the reaction from the world's Catholics. Did my comments seem snide, Wacky?? I'm sorry :(-->. Didn't mean it that way. sudo
-
WG, Uh, what kind of songs were you singing?? That might make a big difference. :D--> sudo
-
Wacky, Seems what you're actually saying is that you don't understand why there is any affection for the man. Now THAT seems odd to me. Was he not the beloved religious leader of millions of people?? Now what I'VE never understood is the thousands of people crying and carrying on during the annual candlelight vigil at Graceland every year. sudo
-
One of my favorite novelty songs... We've all heard it but click HERE! and.... name the year it came out... without looking it up. You might be surprised. The thing about novelty songs were that they were generally just a lot of fun. Why don't we have any of that today?? sudo
-
Rick, I barely remembered that long intro. Good work on finding it! The tune I hear more often on retro stations is the Christmas version. And even that one is slightly different.. the part about the Red Baron up and flying again?? Not sure exactly. sudo
