1. Ala, I'm impressed!!! You not only knew that Russian (or is it Polish??) song but got such a good history behind it. 19th century. Man.. they don't wite 'em any better than that (click HERE!). Thanks for the lyrics, too, girl. You can tell its a patriotic song just by listening to it but the lyrics you posted show the real intensity. Russian music is so soulful. So full of sadness and pathos. But it also has a lyric of unity of purpose... don't mess with us.. we will be victorious!! You mentioned the music in The Hunt For Red October. Just so happens.. I have that very tune in my archives. Will wonders ever cease?? Click HERE! to listen to it. Yeah.. more good soul stirring Russian music. Now click HERE! One of them is the U.S.S.R. (now Russian) national anthem.. and one was written just for the movie ;) sudo P.S. Thanks for the Mary Lou Williams info.

Rosa Parks

Wanna' know what I can't fathom?? And I can fathom a whole lot that I don't agree with. I can fathom why schools were segregated back in the 50's... blacks weren't on the same level as whites (like duh, the black schools weren't properly funded) and lily white folks really didn't want their precious chil'ren associating with negros. But OK... I can fathom it. I can fathom separate white and colored restrooms because blacks weren't as clean as whites. Like duh again... blacks weren't paid a living wage and many didn't even have running water in their homes.. at least here in Memphis. But I can fathom it. What I can't fathom is a white man ordering a black woman to get up on her tired feet and give HIM her seat on a dang public bus, mind you, where they both paid the same fare. I can't fathom a society that not only thought that was proper but had it mandated into law 'fer Heaven's sake. I have to take that into account every time I want to rant and rave at how blacks are taking advantage of the system today and demanding affirmative action. sudo
3. Hey Ron! Oakspear plays a mean kazoo!! I've heard him! sudo
4. Man... Whoah!! It's been an exciting day on the Nostalgia thread hasn't it? Hold on because I've got yet a few more to post. The first one I'm posting just because. Just because I like the song, that's why. Not much to do with nostalgia but what the heck... like we don't go off on tangents here :P. Click HERE! and name the nationality of the song. The next one DOES have some nostalgia value. When I hear this song, it ALWAYS takes me back to the Summer of 1959 when I was in a childrens' theatre production at the Shell (outdoor theatre) in Memphis. I had fallen in love with the lead actress but it wasn't to be between us. She was 16. I was 7. Soon to turn 8 but that didn't matter to her :) . Ah! I'd love to see her again but she'd be a 62 year old lady today and it would probably shatter my dreams since I remember her as she was at 16. Ya'll can click HERE! but it most likely won't make you think of hot Summer nights, the smell of greasepaint and the sounds of locusts. Ah! Summer of 1959. How fast things change in this day and age. If we all lived 500 years ago... things were pretty much the same as they were 600 years ago.... or 700 years ago. sudo
5. Have a happy one David!! So is this the big 50th for you??? :D
sudo

6. Ala, Mary Lou Williams? I'm not familiar with her but that's not unusual.. I'm not familiar with many present day music artists. Could you provide a link or something? I've got an open mind after all. I remember hearing about this Ricky Martin fellow several years back. I wasn't at all interested enough to listen to him but when I finally heard some of his tunes from one of my daughters... I really did like the guy!! Funny how Latin music comes and goes in popularity in this country. From Tito Puente and Carmen Miranda in the 40's to Desi Arnez and Xavier Cugat in the 50's. Don't guess it would be considered Latin music but what about Harry Bellafonte in the 50's and 60's?? Whatever.. it comes and goes in popularity. But what about psychedelic hits from the 60's? Remember those? Here's one that's sure to have an effect... a tune that is undoubtedly, uh, "out there". I'm not sure how far it made it up the Hit Parade but click HERE! and let's hear YOUR comments!! sudo (a really with-it, far-out kind of guy)
7. Kathy, How do you like the traffic there? Its one of the worst congested areas in the country! It'll come to a standstill on the interstates like there's been an accident but then... it'll pick back up and you wonder what THAT was all about. I found out who the singer was on that song... Paper Moon. A Dottie Reid sometimes listed as Dottie Reed. She didn't do that many songs with Benny Goodman who hated having to perform with a vocalist. He was a perfectionist and not exactly the warm cuddly type. sudo
8. Ala, I know you will both enjoy yourselves in Montreal. We go down every home game Ole Miss plays in Oxford obstensibly to see the football game but in actuality, to spend time with our oldest daughter who is a freshman there. So I know your joy in going to see your daughter in college and at the same time going to a great concert. I take it your musician husband is more of a jazz fan than you are? Be vewy vewy careful, Ala... Canada's a foreign country, you know. sudo (aware that Ala LIVES in Canada)

Dog Story

You guys are great.. Only dog people understand how your dog will stand by you no matter what. You can come home after having a bad day at the office.... your dog is glad to see you and jumps up to greet you... you kick him away rather rudely not wanting to be bothered... and the poor dog whimpers wondering what IT did wrong. Not to demean cat owners but there is something special about faithful dogs, IMO. sudo
10. Rick, Naw... I don't think its Peggy lee for the following reasons. Firstly, lotsa' singers performed with Benny Goodman's orchestra... click HERE! for an album that shows many of them. Nextly, it doesn't sound like Peggy lee to me. Here's a few KNOWN tunes she does with Benny Goodman... click HERE!, HERE!, HERE! and HERE! Great tunes all. Man.. if only I turned on the radio today and heard quality like that coming outa' the speakers. sudo
11. Happy birthday ladies!! XOXOXOXOXOXO
sudo (garnering birthday kisses)

Dog Story

******It's Official******* There's a new addition to the Sudo family and his name is Jock!! He's the new little brother to Laddie and even now as I'm banging this out... I can hear them having the best time downstairs. sudo

Dog Story

Belle, Thanks you but most of us love our doggies no matter what they look like, right? And WW.. thanks for the offer but we're not so particular on pedigrees. We just want a healthy little brother for Laddie so the pickings around here should be just fine. Its possible we'll have a new addition to the family TONIGHT! I'll let you guys know. sudo
14. Yeah... All you guys got it. Too easy, huh? 'Twas Paper Moon with Ryan and Tatum O'Neal and I haven't heard much out of either of them in a while. But wasn't that a great movie? I still like to catch it when I can but the main question I have when watching the movie is... did Moses Pray really think Addie might be his daughter?? And WAS she actually his daughter?? Good movie. Click HERE! for the entire unedited Benny Goodman band song. I'd like to know who the canary is... she's good! sudo
15. David, BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!! sudo
16. Alrighty then!! New tune to listen to folks. Not that I have anything against babies mind you. I've raised three of them myself thankyouverymuch :P. But just at the moment.. middle child has me wishing I'd have just become a hermit.. and loving my little puppy dogs. But boy do I digress.. This ( Click HERE!) is the Benny Goodman version of the tune that was first a Hollywood movie and then a TV show. You guys may or may not appreciate big band music like I do but I love the stuff. But this thread is fair and balanced. You don't like the tunes?? Youse guys can post what-some-ever tunes you DO like! And I mean it. This stuff is a lot of fun for me... I'm hoping some of you will step up and post a little of what YOU like!! sudo

Dog Story

Belle, Thank you! Yes.. I love my Scottie who indeed has an appropriate name... Laddie. To see Laddie and me when he was a puppy (a few months ago) click HERE! And then after it's played a bit (it'll look real jerky) play it again to see and hear it smoothly. But I realized after reading your post that I didn't have a very recent picture of Laddie. So here's one taken just this afternoon. Aren't digital cameras great??? I love new technology. If only they would come up with cell phones that sounded as good as line phones. sudo

Happy Birthday Catcup

Hey you guys... We're a couple of days late and many dollars short. But I was down at Ole Miss on her birthday so in the words of that famous barrister, Algonquin J. Calhoun... "I can't be held reliable!!". Catcup... you are such a dear... I hope you had a happy happy!!!!! XOXOXOXO!!! sudo
19. Now this pic isn't nostalgia, of course but it refers to nostalgia. So the question is... do you get it? Or not? Bowtwi sent me this and since I got it... thought it was pretty funny. sudo

Sushi, Well, guess it was my fault then. But hey.. you didn't mention whether or not you liked the stories! sudo

Dog Story

Belle, I was getting panicky just reading what happened. Our little dogs depend on us and love us unconditionally. I'm glad this dog story had a happy ending! Our new puppy is now 7 months old but I think he's lonely during the day if he's by himself. Tonight we're going to look at another litter of Scotties and see if we can't find him a little brother! sudo

"Put me in, Coach."

LG, Actually, I agree with you in most respects. I saw the story I posted as one of how people.. even children who can be the MOST cruel... can have a better nature when called upon. The fact that the rabbi saw it as God's work or some such is the stuff that I routinely hear and let roll off my back. People say God blessed them for this or that. God DIDN'T bless them for this or that. I hardly even hear what they're saying when they get into whatever it is that the Almighty has or hasn't done for (or to) them, LG. People are superstitious and like to invoke their god(s) for their purposes. I understand this well. Living in a theistic society I try to go along to get along and am thankful that most folks' god(s) in this country aren't demanding they sacrifice children or some such. So if some rabbi is ascribing to Jehova the actions of a few boys playing baseball... well I've heard it all before. And to tell you the truth, LG, I hardly hear that religious talk. I thought it was neat that those boys were so nice to a boy that would normally get picked on. Like I said... I'm sorry I even brought it up because now I've highly offended our religious readers in explaining my actions and no one's paying attention to the two heart warming stories posted sudo

"Put me in, Coach."

Geeze Louise!!! I wasn't poking fun at LG or his story. I LOVED his story. It just reminded me of the one I posted as it was similar. As Snopes sez... it coulda' happened just like the rabbi said so I posted it. Man... I'm sorry I even brought it up. sudo

"Put me in, Coach."

Wordwolf, Naw naw naw... MY post came from snopes... click HERE! sudo P.S. Posts around here sometimes end up in the same place as those un-mated socks in the dryer, Excathedra :D
25. George, Yeah but... was not the Alabama team the Red Elephants at one time? They still sometimes use the elphant logo. Of course, that's beside the point. You want names (like the Miami Heat) where the team isn't some kind of animal or warrior. Hmmmm.. can't think of any right off the top of my head. sudo
