Nobody wants extra points? :( Kathy was the only one who correctly named my movie.. click HERE! I was giving extra credit if anyone knew the musical score. No takers so far so I have to give hints. See the picture below? If you don't know it, you can try 'properties'. But put your mouse on the picture and click on it.. the theme again pops up. The man who composed the theme died in his 30's but he is an an often overlooked musical genius, IMO!!!!! FINGAL'S CAVE IN SUMMER 1772, a scientific expedition, sailing north to study the geological riddles of Iceland, found itself becalmed off the west coast of Scotland, near the island of Mull. When the group, led by Sir Joseph Banks of the Royal Society, came ashore, they heard tales of a spectacular natural cathedral rising from the seas. As they waited for a favourable wind, with nothing much better to do, they found fishermen willing to row them through the night to the isle of Staffa. "As the first light of day stole over the ruins of nature's own antiquity," wrote Banks, "this cave's classic order of symmetry - its simplicity of style stretching back into a twilight gloom - the play of reflected light, the echo of the measured surge rising and falling, the transparent green of the water, the profound and fairy solitude of the whole scene - could not fail to impress any mind gifted with a sense of beauty in art or nature." Pillars of rock, stacked like colonnades of Classical columns, retreated before them into a dark vault worthy of ancient Rome. The cave's rocky canopy arched above, like the ribs of a Gothic cathedral. Nature had fused the Classic and the Gothic into one harmonious whole. "Compared to this," asked Banks, "what are the cathedrals or the palaces built by men... where now is the boast of the architect?" Where indeed? Through the happy accident of a calm sea, what the locals had known for centuries the world now discovered as the architectural wonder of Fingal's Cave. sudo

Paw, You're right. He was ca-chinging the register talking about angels getting their wings. sudo

Hiway29, Re:"I'm not sure what the Charles laughton movie is if it's not Bounty." That would have been my first guess, too. This one wasn't in the same league though it was fun watching it and not expecting a whole lot. Charles Laughton is such fun to watch... even in some of his lesser roles. Have any of you guys seen him and Robert Young in The Canterville Ghost? I'm waiting to see that one again. Well, here's the opening clip and just look at the supporting cast. John Carradine, and remember that Sheldon Leonard used to do acting? Remember who he was in It's A Wonderful like? ... Click HERE! and get extra points for knowing that music score. I actually downloaded that movie from http://emol.org. A site that has movies that have lost their copyright available to view online for free. I've downloaded and then made DVD's out of a few movies from there but usually, the quality isn't really good enough for a decent DVD. But a few are just fine but they are large files. This one was over 2 gigs but I just started the download and then went and did other things while it downloaded. Then I burned a DVD that looked as good as if I had rented it! Rick... I'm waiting on yours, too. Are there any other non-guessed out there? sudo

Rick, You're going to have to give hints, I'm afraid. I don't know it either but what Tops suggested was my first choice, too. Karen Valentine. But no.. Its not Room 222, is it? Ah! Karen Valentine. I remember her from episodes in THIS TV anthology series... Click HERE! A great show! And as to the movie GIF clip that I posted (HERE!) It is *not* Mutiny On The Bounty though that is a GOOD guess. I mean, there's Charles Laughton. There's pirates. But there's no Clark Gable and in frame #17 there.. as big as day is Gary Cooper who wasn't in Mutiny On The Bounty. Naw... its *ANOTHER* pirate movie... from 1945 that also starred John Carradine. I remember when John Carridine died in 1988. Sudossuda and I had been married for 3 years and when I saw the obituary I felt a big loss because even though he was "only" a character actor and not a star, he was in so many films and a big part of Hollywood going back to the talkies' first days in 1930. Now.. there are hardly any of them left.. maybe Gloria Stuart who was in Titanic and is now 96 years old? Who else is there that was in Hollywood's glory days of the '30's and 40's?? sudo
-
Hi guys! I watched this movie this weekend and enjoyed it a lot. Anyone recognize any of the actors? Have a hint at what kind of movie it was? Maybe have an idea at what the movie was?? sudo

Shell, All the fuss? Sadly, I think you may be right but personally? I couldn't care less. These folks seem to be so shallow that I wonder why ANYONE gives them a second glance. Maybe Tom's just been busy auditing his little baby from Thetans. sudo

I got a bunch of new pics today from Bowtwi.. Here's a few that I was able to crop and resize... sudo

I remember when we were about the only ones down here in the galley, uh, gallery. But now just lookie! All the competetion. And its growing what with the new Star Trek and TV pictionary threads. But that's OK because the Star Trek thread is kind of nostalgia too isn't it? sudo

Garth, I can't answer for Ron but it tickled me. I'll probably start calling it that too.. everything they sell seems to made in MaoLand. sudo

Adding to the invisible one's observations... I think its a classic example of "he who lives by the sword..". I remember one episode where he was single handedly catching an African black mamba snake in a village where all the residents had the good sense to get the heck out of town. Did he have anti-serum just behind the camera, I wondered? Was there a doctor present that was skilled in resuscitating victims from lethal Black Mamba snake bites? As if that would have been just a whole lot of help.. Here's a little about Black Mamba venom from Wikipedia.. The venom of this snake is extremely toxic. Its bite delivers about 100-120 mg of venom on average, however it can deliver up to 400 mg of venom; 10 to 15 mg is deadly to a human adult. Mortality rate is approximately 100% unless the snakebite victim is promptly treated with black mamba antivenom, which is rare, expensive, and generally only kept on-hand by people who anticipate the possibility of encountering a black mamba... I knew about this dangerous snake when I was watching the guy cornering a black mamba in a tribal hut somewhere in deepest darkest Africa. Catch it he did but afterwards even he admitted as to how nervous he was which made me ask.. why the heck did he do it? He could have used a shotgun and just killed the thing outright but no.. he had to catch it by the tail, capture it, and transport it to an "unpopulated" area in Africa. I liked the guy. He seemed like he would have been fun at an Ole Miss pregame party in the Grove but he lived a dangerous life and surely knew that if he kept doing what he had been doing... his luck was going to run out someday. Rest in peace Steve. sudo

Paw, I remember this song very well but had to Google to find out who did it. I was really really surprised! It took me back to high school where the psychedelic references had gone over my head at the time. I lived in Memphis, remember, not hip and happening California. I don't even remember hearing the lyrics "... I tripped on a cloud and fell eight miles high I tore my mind on a jagged sky". But then.. when we had songs like Doo Wah Diddy Diddy Wah Diddy Do.. the lyrics weren't that important to me. :) sudo

Hiway29, Re:"what does it all mean?" Isn't it obvious, my man? Why, you need a tune that was a hit (mainly in Europe) by a 15 year old teenager I do believe. She still sings, has her own web page and is less than 2 months older than I am. So question is... what year did this tune hit the airways??? Click HERE! sudo

Sfsailor, You sound like a jerk with your Ohio comment but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.. maybe you aren't a jerk. Maybe you're just stupid and my momma taught me not to pick on those not able to defend themselves. This proposed law does nothing more than lower the evidentiary standard for sex offenders. I'll try to explain this so that even you can understand. Presently, these registries contain only those convicted in a criminal court. The evidence in a criminal court is "beyond a reasonable doubt and to a moral certainty". That requires a lot of convincing evidence which is often hard to come by when the victim is a child. They are scared little kids and their testimony can be torn to shreds by a criminal defense attorney. This proposed law would apply standards that operate in civil courts, that is, they could be considered sex offenders "by a preponderance of the evidence". That is... (am I using words that are too big for you?)... the likelihood that the person "did it" is greater than 50-50.... but not to a moral certainty. That is why OJ Simpson got civil damages against him in his second trial but got off on his first trial. The first one was in criminal court.. the second in civil. sudo

Hiway29, Re:"very funny sudo-but what MOVIE is it from?" Fair question. And enough is enough. That theme (HERE!) which is so very Russian is from the movie Romeo and Juliet made in 1966 and starring Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn. Read all about it HERE! Rick.. I listened to your Anthem so tell me.. did you cut your hair?? sudo
-
Paw, Here's the first version that came out in 1967. Sound familiar? She was only 15 years old when she sang this. Click HERE! And Hiway29.. The composer was Серге́й Серге́евич Проко́фьев. All clear now? sudo
-
Rick, Busy day?? Good for you!! You might not be so pleased that you're working your fingers to the bone, so-to-speak, but it beats having not enough work to pay the bills, huh? Seems as if I have been giving out bogus info.. I *MEANT* to say the clue that Tom Strange had given.... "well... it couldn't be Louis L'Amour because he would be blue if I thought a western writer could write music like that... So solly Challie. I'm not saying you are wrong... I was trying to comment on posting style is all. sudo
-
Hiway29, I have given you guys some wrong clues . First off, this piece (HERE!) was *not* an opera but rather, a ballet. It was written around 1935-1936 but first performed in late 1938 it now appears to my googling eyes. The musical clue (which you knew) was only to give you the name of the composer. It had nothing to do with the ballet. :( sudo
-
Hiway29, You're right.. I shouldn't have posted a new one but George's clue was very good. Before giving it away, I'll give another clue.. a musical clue. The same man who wrote the one that's got you scratching your head (HERE!) also wrote this often heard tune... Click HERE! I'm betting more folks will know that one. So if you know the composer, then you might know what opera he wrote the first one for. Rick... on your guess... look at George's clue on it. sudo
-
George, You are correct. It is indeed intense but the composer wasn't German nor Italian. He was from a country known for its musical intensity.. care to guess which country?? And here's another popular classical sounding hit from 1968. Click HERE! and name the performer. sudo

Dilana?? What's that metal thingee in her chin? Does anyone think her tatoos are cool? Yeah, its cool to have stuff engraved on your skin forever, eh? Folks like strange people with strange hair? How about this lady? She had some REAL funky hair! Yet few in 1935 thought she was, like, cool, man. sudo

Hiway29, I'm really pleased! I thought for sure no one would have had any interest in the tune (click HERE!) but lo and behold if you don't surprise me! Re:"was that 1939 tune about a guy and girl in love in nazi ,Germany?" No.. the song was written in 1939 but about a couple in love in another European country (rules out Tristan and Isolde, huh?) and is probably the best known love story ever written. Man.. talk about something being old enough to qualify for the Nostalgia thread!!! sudo
-
Rick, When you get back you have to let us know how the concert went. Here's onw of their more famous tunes.. Click HERE! All of us old guys remember them well don't we? But who are all those old guys in Kathy's pic?? I'm looking for some young wild rock and rollers!!! And for a hit from 1939 Click HERE! Its all about a guy and girl in love. Don't won't to bore anybody so I cropped it to less than a minute. I was coming back from taking my oldest to Ole Miss this past weekend and heard it on the radio (tells you guys what *I* listen to, huh?) and said to myself that I just HAD to post it. A real love story! Aw guys.. I went through Ole Miss on a music scholarship so this is really where my roots lay though I KNOW few will be moved by what I consider a very stirring tune :( . sudo

Paw, Great. This experience is the thing that makes for memorable lives. You'll always remember the evening because of the few times you have seen him in concert. How-some-ever.. I see that my favorite Dylan song wasn't performed.. no doubt because he's waiting until he comes to Memphis to perform it. As I was just now listening to this song (Click HERE!) I realized my eyelids were closing half way shut... by force of habit... as they always used to do whenever I heard it being performed Does anyone remember the official name of the song?? sudo
