Psalmie, That thread up in 'Open' is (as you said) for everything Thanksgiving and not just cooking. Down HERE we deal with the cooking but we all know one thing don't we? I mean if we get really honest.. and that is... it IS all about the food!!! Naw, I'm just kidding.. just read Linda Z's post and I bet most of us have similar stories. I've been going to the local Kroger's store and picking up those cheap turkeys. They let you get only one at a trip but my freezer will hold several. I don't know WHY we Americans do turkey only at Thanksgiving and Christmas when it is SO good! I'll be doing turkey this Spring and who knows.. I may do turkey and dressing on July the 4th instead of hamburgers and hot dogs. Truth be known.. I prefer roasted turkey with dressing to hot dogs any day!! sudo

Kathy, I feel so guilty letting you have to post stuff to keep this thread going. I'm heading off to North Carolina tomorrow to boot but lookie.. since we're talking football and everyone's tired of hearing the theme song to The Andy Griffith show posted... I've got some football nostalgia. We can do this some more but I don't know how many of us *want* some more . Here's a football team's song and it should be a fairly easy one. Click HERE! and name the state of the football team.. or any OTHER subtle answer. I used to love this team back in the 60's. sudo

Coolchef, I really envy you for your knowledge. I do a lot of time in the kitchen (I hesitate to call it cooking) and would LOVE to have had your training. On the oyster thing, though, there is a bit of truth behind what Waysider posted. Maybe as not much today but I still hesitate to use oysters during months with no 'R' in them. You see, the months with no 'R' in them are mainly the Summer months.. May to August. And the problem wasn't with the oysters in the water.. it was the conditions on the decks of the oyster boats. The oysters spoiled very very quickly in the hot temperatures. I've felt ill on a few occaisons after eating oysters and it was always during a month with no 'R' in it. Coulda' been a coincidence, though, I'm willing to admit. I think most commercial oyster outfits ice the suckers down immediately now don't they? Thanksgiving Day On Blind Farmer Brown's Ranch sudo

Like most holidays this one has snuck up on me like a rude sound from Ron's son's machine.. There's sure to be plenty of recipes on the new 'Kitchen' Forum but guys its getting a tad late in all this. It's only 3 days away!! Why is it that these very special times slip up so quickly? The very latest fad in turkey preparation seems to be to brine them with seasonings. I'm assuming the dressing and pumpkin pie recipes are unchanged. But lets hear it folks... gots your very-own-selves something special we need to hear? Here's something Thanksgiving I think is neat.. Click HERE! and see how long it takes you to recognize what is being presented. My mom used to work at the Millington, Tn naval base and had one of the unmarried WAVS over for thanksgiving dinner, oh, about 1966 I'd say it was. She was from Alaska and had told my momma how Oyster dressing was a tradition where she grew up. So guess what? My mom made oystter dressing just for her. It was the first time I had ever had oysters as they weren't real popular in Memphis back then. Ummmmm... I now make it every year. sudo

Talk about something that turns PFAL ...
Sudo replied to GarthP2000's topic in Doctrinal: Exploring the Bible
Garth, Aw C'mon.. you know you can't mix the species. Now I had a strange cousin that seemed particularly fond of one of his dogs. But nobody accused him of anything when that dog had puppies even though they appeared a bit odd. Why, I just so happen to have a picture of one of the cute pups!!! sudo -
What Abigail and Double D said... Garlic. And it doesn't take that much. Also a little plain white sugar. If you want to test me out and you like turnip, mustard or collard greens, try this as they are in season now! Wash de-stem and tear up the greens into little pieces, then place in a big 'ole kettle. And here's all you add to it.. 1 cup of water, 1/3 stick of butter (forget bacon drippings they make it taste greasy), 1 heaping tablespoon of sugar, 2 heaping teaspoons of salt and.. 1/4 teaspoon (doesn't take much) garlic powder. Bring to low boil for about, oh, 1 hour will do. sudo

Ex, I don't think Friday night is a very popular night for cooking. Maybe throwing in a frozen pizza while watching the tube?? sudo (who doesn't eat those things because of the trans fats)

Geeze Ron.... No stuffing??? sudo

Lindyhopper, Thank you sir. We are almost on the same page, I think. Yes, since as you say, it gives the death toll at 11 in the 'hook', my assumption was that it had to be something ELSE other than those 11 deaths that made it "As Bad As It Gets". I actually feel a bit silly now for starting this thread. I thought it was a 'no-brainer' as to how MSNBC was using hyperbole but have been taught a lesson about peoples' conceptions. I reiterate.. I live and learn and adapt accordingly. sudo

Hiway29, One thing I found interesting about that Disney cartoon was that it was distributed by RKO. But then, I don't know how all that works. Re:"Then there is a whole library of black stereotype cartoons, that were just accepted as commonplace back then." And there was nothing really wrong with it either, IMO. That's the sensitive kind of thinking that got Song Of The South pulled off the shelves wasn't it? They had blacks speaking in 'Negro' dialect. Fact of the matter is some blacks STILL talk that way. But you aren't supposed to show it? It would be different if it were done with malice but all those white folks in 'black face' doing minstrel shows (ala Al Jolson), or Uncle Remus types were done with affection for blacks, IMO. They weren't trying to make fun of them. Compare those 'caricatures' with how Southern people have been caricatured the whole time in Hollywood. We were portrayed as stupid, ignorant double-nought spies who thought the civil war was still going on in The Beverly Hillbillies. We were hot-to-trot hormones out of control Daisy Dukes in hot pants that showed butt cheeks in The Dukes Of Hazzard. The men were stupid and corrupt.. and they ALL spoke with exaggerated accents. Now, I'm not complaining, Hiway29. I laugh at all the good natured Southern humor too but don't make something out to be racist (I'm not accusing YOU of this, my man) just because it involves stereotypes. I think anyone can see in the clip above that Zip-a-dee-doo-dah was done with a lot of affection. sudo (lookin' around for his chewing tobacco)

Linda, Re:"Sudo, I'm not so sure in this case it's hyperbole." So you think it was just a quote, then, and therefore MSNBC could legitimately lead off a story about storms killing 11 people with: 'As Bad As It Gets'. Right? Evidently, Krysilis saw it similarly. I think it's obvious hyperbole to make someone click on the story, myself. If a city was able to reduce its gang related deaths from 50 a year to just 1 then I'm sure they could get that same quote from the mother of the one death, don't you think? To HER the death of her son is "As Bad As It Gets", no? Even though things are getting really really better. This is just an off-the-top-of-my-head ridiculous example, Linda. Like my example of the devastation of New Orleans after Katrina. In spite of what Geo says.. it wasn't total devastation and I'm surprised HE missed my point. Yeah, dude.. I know it was bad but was NOT total devastation and that's what I was pointing out. Its like the media crying wolf. Oh, there must be a little tribal sparring going on over in Darfur I see.. the media is (quoting someone there, of course) calling it genocide . sudo
-
Evidently... I'm the only one here who is bothered by the hyperbole. I learn from this kind of feedback, guys and I appreciate your replies. I'm seeing that the media have their viewers pegged pretty well, it appears. I should have realized that a professional outfit like MSNBC would have known what would appeal to most of its viewers. I mean, they have people who are experts at this sort of thing either on staff or consultation. sudo (who lives and learns and adapts accordingly :) )
-
Kathy, It didn't bother me, personally. I've seen some of those WWII war cartoons that WOULD be offensive by today's standards, though. Interestingly, the term 'Jap' was used by the mainstream media back then and wasn't considered a pejorative term. Many of my parents' generation, having grown up with that, still use the term yet are NOT racists. sudo

Isn't YouTube great?? Lookie what I found there!! Uh, the first 20 sec might be dark... sudo

I have MSNBC as my homepage but am not entirely happy with it.. And this is a case in point. Just lookie at this screen capture I took just a few minutes ago.. Now what would *YOU* think would constitute 'AS BAD AS IT GETS'?? If you click on the article you see that only 11 people were killed out of a population of about a million. Couldn't get any worse, huh? Heck, its obvious to a dang IDIOT it could have been a lot worse. It reminds me of when they suckered me in last.. when they had "experts" and seasoned newsmen on the scene and called the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina "Total Devastation". I was expecting images of Nagasaki or Hiroshima of August 1945 but what did I fine? When I clicked around the Internet, it looked like most of New Orleans was still there. Yeppers.. there was the Super dome. Yep.. there was St. Louis church and the French quarter just as I remembered it from many visits. So why am I posting this? 1) To see if anyone other than me is just really peeved that the news media uses these inflammatory words, terms and phrases when they are clearly deceiving and 2) To see if anyone else recognizes that the news media does *indeed have an agenda.. to inflame every story they can to get viewership. sudo
-
Dang Belle! That was before you even left TWI then wasn't it?? Hmm... I'm thinking of posting it again for all the new folks but then.. I don't want to bore anyone with it either. Naw. Phttttt.. What the heck, huh?? sudo
-
Tom, Hee-hee! sudo P.S. Rick and Hiway29.. how you guys figure this outfit can get away with selling Disney product on-line? I'd a thought Disney would have slapped them with lawsuits right and left!

I guess this would be the thread to use.. Hey guys.. I love this new forum but I hope people don't quit posting because of lack of replies. I see some good recipes and think... hmmm.. I just might try that one but if I don't post a reply then folks might get their feelings hurt. ***** So here's my question for all you kitchen types out there ******** Does anyone have a really good cold crab dip recipe? I've tried several and have been continually disappointed. Sudossuda makes a great clam dip but it doesn't translate to crab. She uses cream cheese, mayo, worchester sauce and grated onion. Ummm.. But crab?? Eh.. I'm still looking and am resigning myself to the fact that I may have to break down and do a warm crab dip. :( sudo

Jonny, Oh wow. He stuck it in his eye man.

Fact is... You guys are just egging me on, you do know, don't you?? Uh, does anyone remember the chili judging contest I posted way back in WayDale days??? sudo

Hiway29, Yeah, but i bet you couldn't get your hands on Song Of The South at the company store, huh? sudo
