Exie, That song you posted came out in 1978. I don't even know who did it.. but whenever I hear it (not so frequently now) it takes me back to my first job as a dentist at the Hardeman county health department nearly 30 years ago..... and one of my girlfriends at the time. Donna Rose! sudo

Belle, I've been thinking about that girl at the bank who had never heard of the Monkees or Davy Jones. I run into this at my office because my hygienist is on 24 years old. She had never heard of Jim Nabors OR Gomer Pyle. I was mildly shocked but it happens all the time. She has also NEVER seen Gone With The Wind so I gave her a DVD copy of the movie a while back. She told me this week that she and her husband (they are newlyweds) haven't had time to watch it yet........ Here's a clip from Davy Jones web site (http://www.davyjones.net/) where Bill O'Reilly interviews Davy. He doesn't look too bad for a middle aged man, I thought. Better than me for sure but not exactly the baby faced teen idol he was back in the 60's either. Still, for former teen idols I think he's aged a lot better than, say, Frankie Avalon or fer sure Tommy Sands and Fabian. sudo

George, It DOES sound a little like Bert Lahr doesn't it?? It's not him, though. You might want to ask Kathy who it is because she knows the movie :). Good job Kathy! sudo

Happy special year birthday to you!! Yep... seems there's a lot of those going around here lately... I got 'em back in September. We're thinking of you and the bluegrass state today! sudo

Rhino, Ah.. You and I both share dreams about Rita Hayworth it seems. WHAT a babe, man oh man. Here's the clip of her in Gilda that was so controversial. Pretty tame by today's standards but considered sizzling by 1946 standards. Towards the end of the clip she starts taking off a glove and it was considered a "strip tease". She was married several times (including Orson Wells and Prince Aly Khan) and later in life she said, "Men go to bed with Gilda, but they wake up with me". Kind of sad. She developed Alzheimer's disease early and died in 1987 at only age 68. But in 1946 when Gilda was made she was something else! sudo

Let's see.. Bulwinkl is getting sore feet standing around for 8 hours a day. George is Monkeying around while Belle and Kathy like my Fiddler On The Roof clip. Hey.. that IS a great clip, though, huh? Its so DARK though.. I wish you guys could see those guys doing the traditional Russian dancing with the wine bottles on their heads a little clearer. Did that wedding reception look like fun??? We need a new one to guess though don't we? Then click HERE! and name the movie it came from or the actor who is singing.. anything like that. I get a smile on my face just listening to it. sudo

Here's an old one Belle... sudo

There are active Christmas threads in Nostalgia and the 'Just Plain Silly' forum. This is a thread for the posts that don't fit in either of those places. I'll contribute the first one.. a Trans-Siberian orchestra song that maybe you haven't heard before... Ah! Christmas time. The absolute best time of the year. sudo

I take it then that the "Roasting on An Open Fire" song was a hit? I've got a few more novelty songs that folks might enjoy here. You know, Belle, most of us Nostalgia thread people had to learn the hard way how to post stuff. However, in this day of easy YouTube... Posting just songs doesn't excite anyone any longer. I'd be glad to tutorial you through it though. Re:"p.s. Sudo, I liked that man singing, but still don't have any idea what movie that is from." I'm sorry, Belle.. it went unanswered didn't it? The movie was Fiddler On The Roof. Below is the dancing at the wedding reception. Man, does that look like a fun party or what?? Good movie. Bulwinkl, I downloaded your clip so anytime you want to delete it is OK by me. I looked at the server that you used. You do art for a living? sudo

Hey! I got it working again! Hee-hee! sudo

Kathy, Re:"Looking forward to it." Oh.. maybe after listening you WON'T be so delighted. This one is just perfect for those who have had their fill with hearing Alvin and the chipmonks played over and over on the radio. Click HERE! sudo

Kathy, I just got a minute but I wanted to tell you I liked that clip as well. I have a novelty song I'll post when I get home... if my internet connection is back up. I was going to do it yesterday but my internet connection was screwey. I think ya'll might like it. sudo

Geo, We're sounding like a bunch of Scrooges here I know. Re:"As for the rest of the genre "Grandma got run over by a reindeer" and such like, - long grooooooaann..." I never have been able to understand that song's popularity. It doesn't even make sense. What? The reindeer were hit-and-run artists??? And that led Grandpa and the grandson into becoming Santa believers? I would think that those rednecks would be setting bear traps for Santa next Christmas.. he killed grandma!! We have a music station we play in the office that started playing Christmas music.... the week BEFORE Thanksgiving! I can understand because it is the most listened to music station in Memphis offices and places of business. You know the type.. soft rock. lots of The Carpenters and Chipmunk Love kind of stuff. No one's going to get offended by listening to it like they would if alternative rock or heavyMutha' rap were coming out the speakers. So businesses love it when Christmas music is coming out of the speakers to get the shoppers in a buying mood. But they play the same songs every day. Little Michael Jackson's 'I saw Mommy Kissing Santa' is a daily favorite as is hearing Bing Crosby's White Christmas maybe three of four times in an eight hour period. I guess I'm going to have to post the songs here that you would never hear on our easy listening soft rock station, huh? sudo

Bulwinkl, Ohhhh!! Aren't you something?? I don't imagine you'd tell where you got that song would you? I've got some interesting ones as well, though they don't really belong on the Nostalgia thread. Hiway29.... If I remember correctly, I was of the same opinion as you back then. I don't think I ever really thought those kinds of novelty songs were funny either. However, they soared to the top of the charts so SOMEBODY had to think they were funny. sudo

George, I'm late on this thread but I'd like to throw some congratulations out there too. An MD/PhD degree still means something now-a-days... unlike a lot of degrees handed out at many colleges and universities. The young man has done well. sudo

What presents are going to be under that tree? Here's a lady that has a special request.... Click HERE! Does it bring a tear to the eye??? sudo

LucyGoose, And we're glad you made it here. Welcome! I can't answer a lot of your questions but homosexuality was NOT condoned by TWI (The Way International) unless... you were lesbian... and kept it quiet. Martindale had a thing for doing it with two women who... oh no need to get graphic. You can read all about it here in the archives. Your "boyfriend" and the sleeping bag? How could ya'll have done much in a sleeping bag anyways? The last time I was in a sleeping bag, I took up the whole space. sudo

Rick, Mind if I go ahead of you? Here's one that you should recognize because... YOU posted it a Christmas or two (or three or four) ago. Its one of those "novelty" songs that were so popular back in the 50's and 60's. You guys remember when the news guys used to sound like that? Click HERE! and guess the year it came out. It is SO dated that you guys should get real close. And to think this was considered pretty humorous at the time. sudo

Pirate, Yeah.. that "dirt road" term really made for a mind picture didn't it? I had never heard it before the class and haven't heard it since. VPW was warped. But law.. how he taught the Word. sudo

Here's one from our British friends.. negotiating for cheap dentistry. You know? They might actually have something! The man seems to have no fears, huh? Just keep watching :) Gotta' love British humor! sudo

Hey Lifted Up!! Lookie! We got our tree up! Of course, I had to start working on it since last week but I'm glad to say I was able to do what it was I had to do.... and drain those bottles I did!! sudo

Rocky, I don't have HBO any longer so I guess I'll have to go out and rent Flags Of Our Fathers if you really liked it. I did see Saving Private Ryan, though. I'd recommend it but not as a 'must see' movie. By all accounts the D-Day invasion was the closest depiction of any movie made. I read that some veterans that saw the movie got physically ill at how realistic it was. Pretty gruesome. sudo

Here's a little addendum... We stayed at an Embassy Suites hotel in Richmond, Va for Thanksgiving. When we checked in I asked the young ladies at the counter if the glasses in the room were put through a dishwasher or were they just cleaned in the room by housekeeping. Both of the ladies insisted that the glasses were washed in dishwashers. Well, I suspected they weren't and sure enough when I saw a housekeeping cart on our floor there were no glasses on it. I asked the housekeeper how she cleaned the glasses and she flat out told me that she just rinsed them out in the sink. Maybe it was the look on my face but she then added a little hastily that she rinsed them in hot water and let the water run over them while she was cleaning the room. I guess she thought hot tap water killed germs. I told Suda and when we checked out she confronted the ladies at the counter about the matter. They both seemed genuinely shocked that the glasses were only rinsed out with water. They said they were going to tell the manager. Yeah, like he doesn't know, huh? This sure seems to be the standard way of taking care of the glasses in hotels across the country. What surprises me is that no one seemed to be aware of it. I wonder if the hotel managers who approve this practice would be OK coming into a dental office where they just rinse off the instruments with hot water between patients. sudo

Lifted Up, You could be right. How 'bout helping me out here? I'm bombing and getting cold sweats hearing the Ka-chings! from the drummer. Now here's something different.. whatcha' think?? sudo

Uh, not so funny?? OK.. then how 'bout THIS one?? No Nativity Scene!!! There will be no Nativity Scene in the United State Congress, This year ! The Supreme Court has ruled that there cannot be a Nativity Scene in the United States capital this Christmas season. This isn't for any religious reason, they simply have not been able to find three wise men and a virgin in the Nation's capitol. (There was no problem, however, finding enough asses to fill the stable.) sudo
