  1. Isn't he wonderful wonderful wonderful isn't Jesus my Lord wonderful? My 9th grade English teacher had vocabulary day once a month. She had this high pitched annoying voice. She'd say, "Today's vocabulary word is lackadaisical. LACK-a DAIsical. I LIKE that word. AH HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!" I did drugs for 8 years and I never met anyone with mood swings like her's. That couldn't have been just PMS.
  2. I agree with Whitedove, but I've gotten many prayers answered by thanking God for stuff that hadn't happened yet. I never did that with the attitude that I could order God around, though.
  3. quote: When I was a child, I went to a friend's church. Her minister taught fire and brimstone so vividly that I was terrified for months. It's called mind control. Various media wants us to believe that only "cults" do this. Actually, I think TWI in the 70s was LESS guilty of this than churches. Employers do this as well.
  4. Dmiller: Thanks for posting that section of youtube. The Dead (Jerry, Bob, and Vince) sang the national anthem on opening day of the 1993 SF Giant's season. ESPN showed the first line but I always wondered how the whole thing sounded and there was a link to it on the website. They sounded a lot better than Roseanne. Sprawled: Now that I think of it, that show I went to was about 2 weeks before I went to my first twig fellowship.
  5. Lifted up: Yeah, I remember Don Demeter. He played for the Tigers whom I rooted for growing up in Michigan. I think we got him from Philly in the Jim Bunning trade. He could hit pretty good if I recall. Now that the playoffs are decided, I'm glad my Cardinals DON'T have to play the Dodgers....yet. The only game I attended this year was in July. We pounded Brad Penny and co. 11-3. Pujols went 4 for 5, and both Chris Duncan and Yadier Molina went 3 for 4. Plus we swept the season series 7-zip. If we play the Dodgers in the playoffs any time soon, even next year or beyond, they're going to be especially motivated to beat us. I would prefer to avoid that. Despite the Cardinals making the playoffs by default, I'm optomistic. Back in the 90s I still lived in MI and rooted for the Red Wings. Three years in a row they were the number one seed (94-96). All 3 years they fell on their face. Then the 2 years in a row when they won the Stanley Cup (97/98) they were the #3 seed. Same for '02. The Cardinals won 100 plus games each in '04/'05 and did not win the WS. This year, NOBODY expects them to go past the 1st round of the playoffs. They don't even have home field advantage. Hmmm.
  6. Women are like.......dog doo doo; the older they get, the easier they are to pick up.
  7. Wow! I just realized that today is the 30th anniversary of the last time I saw the Dead with Jerry alive.
  8. "We'll forsake you. Gonna rape you. Let's forget you, better still!" = Pete Townshend But one man's Jason is another man's Jesus. TWI is alive and well for many people who aren't even in it anymore. If it's just a religion, then yeah, let's bury it and move on, but if it's also a belief system that still works for many people...? "It lives!" = witch in beginning of movie 'Sword and the Sorcerer'

quote: Oakspear: I'm sure there are sections of each epistle which contain elements of all 4. Remember they always said there is no reproof and correction for Thessalonians because God is going to pull off the hope and there can be no possibility of error? Well, twice it says to comfort one another with these words, so if people didn't do that they could be reproved, right? But VP kept saying that the order of the church epistles did not vary in all greek texts, which wasn't true of the gospels or the other NT stuff and he (VP) treated them as a curriculum. Romans, Corinthians, and Galatians as doctrine reproof and correction to the individual believer, Ephesians Phillipians and Collosians as doctrine reproof and correction to the church as a whole, and Thessalonians as doctrine of the hope, the great equalizer. Like I said, there can be elements of doctrine reproof correction and instruction in righteousness anywhere, but I see no evidence to refute VPs take on that. BRAVO! You just made my case FOR me! All the Church Epistles are for doctrine, reproof, correction, instruction in righteousness. Period. You YOURSELF have seen as much, and SAID as much. Therefore, to limit any one of them to 1/4 of that is to rob it of up to 3/4 of its purpose. No, I did not say that "all the church epistles are for doctrine reproof correction instruction in righteousness period". YOU said that. I said that while all the church epistles contain ELEMENTS of those things, the THEME of the church epistles is Romans, Ephesians, and Thessalonians - doctrine, Corinthians and Phillipians - reproof, and Galatians and Collosians - correction. Lasagna, spaghetti, and macaroni all have a common element, pasta, yet they are 3 different menu items. You would have a lot more credibility if 1) you weren't weighted down by your broken record VP hating agenda, and 2) the fact that you have to write a short novel every time you express said agenda.

    The 60s!

I think the 60s were unique. When I consider each decade in my lifetime, the 60s stand out as having more drastic change from the beginning of the decade to the end. I also suspect that the one/two punch of Kennedy's assassination and the affect of the Beatles on America, which two things happened less than 3 months apart, started a doosy of a chain reaction.
  13. That verse in Romans the gifts and calling of God are without repentance. If someone has an actual ministry of God, they don't lose it if they screw up. They may lose peoples' trust, but they don't lose the ability to minister.

quote: Starting immediately all sentences in the ensuing posts to this topic must be diagrammed Hey, Templelady, I suspect you were being facetious, but when I was in 5th grade we worked a lot on diagramming sentences, and I hear they don't require most elementary students to do this any more. I credit having learned to diagram sentences with the ease I had learning retemories. Cause if they teach you what parts of speech every word is, then they have to teach you about prepositional phrases and noun and adjective clauses and that's how I did retemories; if I broke the verses down into smaller portions like prepositional phrases and such, it was easier to memorize the whole verse. Slight derail, proceed.

quote:Keep in mind Corinthians is a reproof epistle. That's what vpw said, because that's what Bullinger said. It looks neat on a chart, and sounds learned. However, I question whether there's sufficient evidence to say that with authority. One could just as easily argue it's the doctrinal epistle of the manifestation of the spirit, or declares the doctrine of the "Gathering Together". The doctrine is in Romans 12 (let love be without dissimulation [hypocrisy]), 1 Cor. 13 shows ways that hypocrisy can sneak into your love walk.

    Charity

Keep in mind Corinthians is a reproof epistle. Chapter 13 lists 16 characteristics about charity, 9 of which say what charity is NOT. I think it's important to point out that God's love is usually different than the love promoted in the world. Both Neil Young and Sting have songs which say that love can break your heart. Not God's love. And of course Tina Turner says love is a second hand emotion in that song of her's. Again, not God's love.
  18. No, ND is always tough. I have always said of ND that the absolute worst record they'll ever have is 6-5. So Bob Davie as head coach went what? 4-7 one year? He's going to hell for sure. To be fair, I think 31 of Michigan's points came off turnovers, but Charlie Weis gave UM a lot of credit. It just feels good to beat ND though.
  19. I remember LCM once said that he hopes Notre Dame goes 0 and 11 and still gets a bowl bid just so they can go 0 and 12. Don't know about that, but I'm definitely a Michigan fan and ND is one tough opponent, especially at South Bend. 47-21, hooray!
  20. Wait, was this stranger in TWI? I knew a few trinitarians who for whatever reason chose to hang around TWI.
  21. If it says God was manifest in the flesh, aren't they trying to say Jesus is God? But if it says which then it refers back to the mystery of godliness connecting it with all 6 characteristics listed; not just manifest in the flesh. I agree with Bliss that Jesus was being obedient to God no matter what he knew or didn't know.
  22. Sprawled: Thank you for that wonderful music. I was a Twig cordo from '81-'85 and that tape always reminds me of the best of those times. I think of being a musician in TWI was sorta like being Ed McMahon. Stuff like Star search and that Publisher's clearing house sweepstakes that he did proves he has a marketable presence and personality in the entertainment industry, but when he was on the Tonight show he totally sublimated his ego and personality to make Johnny look good and did it well. In a similar way, TWI musicians had to get their marching orders to make TWI look good. If a musician really is OK with that, no big deal, but no musician should be disdained and disrespected if they just don't want to do that. Ted Ferrell once posted that those who were quick to accuse musicians of being on an ego trip, themselves were on a jealousy trip. If you allow a musician to get on stage, LET HIM/HER PLAY!!! IMO.
  23. I don't know for sure, but I bet there are more people involved with Chris Geer, CES, and CFF each than there are still with TWI.
  24. Rascal you are a one trick pony; you have nothing new to say.
  25. Sprawled: Well, I dug the hell out of that tape. Still have it. Less than a year ago I played the song Faithful at a branch sized gathering and I'm considering doing Building the wall sometime. What instrument did you play and who was the guy with the really low voice who wrote the song about his grandpa? I think there must've been a lot of pressure on way prod groups to conform to TWI speak, but there was still a small window of possibility to express your group personality. IMO Called out maximized that opportunity.
