I purposely never purchased a gun just so I would not be in a position to use one foolishly. Most of the other men in our area were gun owners, and there was subtle pressure to purchase one, especially during the Y2K "preparations". I was treated as if I was not man enough to protect my family by not owning a gun. Funny incident: one rabid gun owner invited me and another twig coordinator to go shooting one night. After enduring a lecture from them both on the joys of gun ownership yada, yada, yada...I loaded my borrowed pistol and hit all but one shot in the bullseye. That was the first and last time that I'd fired a gun. It was real quiet on the drive home. In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice...but in practice there is Oakspear

Did you ever read that book C. Geer wrote? with updates
Oakspear replied to year2027's topic in About The Way
There were two books, one was Living Victoriously and the other was Take God at His Word, or something similar. As Lightside wrote, they were collections of Wierwille's teachings collected in book form, Living Victoriously taken specifically from the class of the same name that was done in 1982. They were sold in the Way bookstore while Geer and Martindale were still affiliated with each other. The content of the books was on par with the collaterals, especially Volume 5, which was also drawn from oral teachings, rather than short booklets like volumes 1-4 were. As I recall the binding was similar to that of the collaterals, the same two-tone coloring, LV in white and green and TGAHW in two-tone purple. I do not remember if they were numbered as part of the Studies in Abundant Living series however. Martindale made a big deal of the fact that the books used the phrase "posthumously edited by Chris Geer" on the title page. None of Wierwille's other books listed his editors so prominently, although he was alive when all his other books were published. They were published not by American Christian Press, but by European Christian Press. In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice...but in practice there is Oakspear -
Hope: I haven't seen a good review of this movie yet, but I still liked it. In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice...but in practice there is Oakspear

Evan, a brilliant college student has always had blackouts during times of stress and trauma in his life. His psychiatrist recommends writing things down in a journal. One night, as he re-reads a section of one of the journals and finds himself reliving a traumatic experience from thirten years in the past, he remembers the details that had been blocked out. After some experimentation he finds he can do this at will when reading his journals, and that he can actually make changes in the past. After going back to his home town to visit his childhood friends, he sees how messed up their lives are, and decides to go back and change something that he believes was instrumental in their lives turning out so horribly. He succeeds in making the desired change; when he wakes up in the present, initially everything appears so much better, but not all is as it seems. The Evan of the new timeline is different in significant aspects from how he was before, yet he still has the memories from the original timeline, in addition to the new memories that come crowding painfully into his mind. An unintended result of his change is that while one friend's life turns out much better, another's is much worse. He goes back again to try to fix what he left unfixed the first time. It gets even worse. Each change spawns unforseen complications as Evan becomes alternately frantic to fix his mistakes and confident that he can simply go back and make everything alright. Add to the mix is Evan's father, who is permantly institutionalized, who appears to have had the same ability that Evan did, which is what possibly drove him mad. There were several spots where I thought the movie was ending, until another twist was thrown in. "What If" is always a fun game to play: how would one's life turn out iof one important decision was made differently? Guy wills himself back in time to change the events that caused his friends to have such messed up lives. For every fix, things get worse, much worse. There is suspense, action, and some nifty twists. It lives up to its previews! In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice...but in practice there is Oakspear

Hey guys, while I am capable of being mean spirited, I wasn't in this case. I saw an apparently (to me) negative remark about a faith choice that several of us here at GS have made, and was curious about why the remark was made. I've got no beef with any of the posters on this thread :D--> ISTW, can you check the private topics?, thanks In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice...but in practice there is Oakspear

Hope: I believe the figure Martindale used was 4/5, not 45%. That would be 80% for you mathematically challenged! :D--> In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice...but in practice there is Oakspear

Regarding a "one-time" affair, I don't think there was ever anything in writing, or anything at all from the BOD about that. There has been plenty of statements to that effect by lower-level leaders speaking on their own authority. I heard a lot of justification, rationalization and excuses by my fellowship coordinator as well as the State coordinator at the time of the Allen lawsuit. What I thought was interesting was Rosie's statements about what was behind Martindale's ejection. Originally Martindale announced that he decided to step down, Rosie said that he was asked to step down; Martindale said it was because he wanted to protect himself, his family, and the ministry, Rosie said it was because he had not upheld biblical standards. Neither sounds like it was the whole truth. Rosie claims that she first found out about his "affairs" in 1998 and about Ms. Allen in 1999, yet he was allowed to continue as teacher and President through 2000. TWI says that they do not track how much people give, yet Colombo has records inmdicating how much the Peelers gave every year. In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice...but in practice there is Oakspear

Anybody else notice Colombo's shark-like behavior when questioning Peeler? In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice...but in practice there is Oakspear

Lawyer: What did you do to satisfy yourself that this was an accurate statement? (that the Allen lawsuit was part of an organized campaign to destroy TWI - contained in the TWI press release) Steven Roberts: I just read it and believed what it said was accurate. The Way doesn't tell people where to live The Way doesn't monitor how much people give The Way does not tell people who to marry or who to divorce Fellowship coordinators are not restricted to everything the BOD says In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice...but in practice there is Oakspear

Wacky: That approach was used by many: knowing enough of the bible to be able to counter attacks with really-truly-honest-to-God scripture. It even worked for a while. In time the abusive leaders got wise to that and started accusing us of using the Word deceitfully, and leaning heavily on the "obey the leaders no matter what" interpretation of certain verses. Not only did "leadership" use "The Word" to attempt to control (often succeeding), but in marriages, they would tell each spouse different things. Very seldom would anyone who was counselling my ex-wife and I talk to us together. When they did, it was different than what they told each of us separately. I know what you're trying to say Oldies, but the statement "we complied through fear ... " isn't being given through your viewpoint, but another's...so how can you even have an opinion on it? The poster is writing about her experience, not yours. Howe can you say that her statement is false? You weren't where she was. Not everyone experienced the same things. Yeah...be quiet :D--> (kidding). Look at the flip side, what if every time you related some incident about something that happened to you, good or bad, somebody chimed in with "that's not my experience", implying that it never happened? In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice...but in practice there is Oakspear

Good point, none of would have ever found Dallas on our own --> I mean the "teachings" :D--> I enjoyed the road trip aspect of it, and liked meeting up with long sundered pals, but I dreaded "sahring" time, since I had to really think to come up with anything that "blessed" me in the teachings! GJ: Your experience does not fit into Mike's reality, therefore he looks for ways to make it fit. Did anyone actually get anything out of these Advanced Class Specials? I mean anything useful? After the advanced class, there wasn't too much that was really new or useful. Oh yeah, we "learned" who the "seed boys" were, and heard a lot of Martindale's opinions. The only events that I liked were the Word in Business meetings where you got together with people of like professions. But it wasn't the teachings, but hanging out with fellow sales reps and managers all day that was cool!
