False dilemma! Yup, some folks did get blessed and stayed, some folks were stupid and stayed, some folks stayed out of fear, or because of family. I think you missed those posts, Mikey, but then again, the purpose of this site is not to tout our lifestyle choices, but to give folks the "other side" of TWI, (or something like that :D-->Oh, and btw, I wasn't offended at your mention of beer as part of my belief system...all praise Leinenkugel's! Old One: Yeah, I was nitpicking :D--> But you know, I'm only going to do that to posters I disagree with, the folks I agree with can get called by the folks that disagree with them. In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice...but in practice there is Oakspear

Thanks for the links...I'm looking forward to hearing that album, Birdland. It will be interesting to hear some of the guest artists, like Joe Satriani performing Yardbirds classics. While visiting my family in NY this past November, we were watching "American Dream" where one of the main characters is dating a guy in a rock band. While they are talking backstage, you hear the unmistakable harpsichord intro to "For Your Love" and see in the background a group that is supposed to be The Yardbirds. Later in the show at an autograph session a fan asks one of the band members where "Mr. Clapton" is, and is told that he has been replaced by Jeff Beck, and that they are sure that Mr. Beck will do just fine. I love it when Mike quotes Wierwille's PFAL book to support his belief that PFAL is god-breathed. He quotes from a book that we don't agree on the value of, let alone it's God-breathedness (yes, I made that word up), as if producing the written words of the man many of us consider a charlatan will convince us that he wasn't a charlatan and his word were god-breathed In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice...but in practice there is Oakspear

No Mike, I'm not. Do you know what my "belief system" is? It's one thing to stand firm on your faith and take the consequenses of believing a certain way (as did Stephen. for example), it's quite another to want to stick with a system even after you know it's wrong, or to want to die if you find that your belief is false. In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice...but in practice there is Oakspear

If PFAL is wrong, isn't the truth; you don't want to change, to adjust to what is the truth? You want to DIE instead? You don't see anything wrong with that mindset? In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice...but in practice there is Oakspear

Maybe we can raise Relf from the dead What are Dreja, McCarty and Samwell-Smith doing? I didn't realize that they were famous these days. Of course Roy! You make a good point, it is possible to strenuously disagree with a person's opinion, while respecting the person. You and I disagree on almost everything, yet we don't hate each other. :D--> In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice...but in practice there is Oakspear

O-Man, I don't know if the poster you quoted meant for "much" to be synonymous with "most", but that's not what was written. I think it would be fair to say that if what Vic taught was in error, then those he plagarized from would be in error also in the instances where the teaching was kept intact and in context. In instances where he "cut and pasted" teachings together then it would not be necessarily true. "Self serving" would seem to fall into the category of motivation. A teaching can be technically correct, but misused. In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice...but in practice there is Oakspear

I'd rather be the swimmer who doesn't need to be saved, because he didn't almost drown. False dilemma #2! I'd prefer to be taught by someone with high integrity who seeks to maintain it. But while in TWI I was taught by someone with low integrity who got progressively lower. In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice...but in practice there is Oakspear

...if TWI decides to take legal action? I only see one hand going up...that's who gets to make calls like this. In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice...but in practice there is Oakspear

If what Wierwille taught had any value, it would stand on its own merits despite any sins, failures, shortcomings, abuses, what have you, of Wierwille himself. In fact, there are posters here who do believe that there was value, in whole or in part, in PFAL. Believing that PFAL is "god-breathed", and thus inerrant, is absurd. The veneration that most of us gave the man and everything that came out of his mouth while we were "in" was absurd. While plagarism does not necessarily taint the material, it does taint the man. Putting this con man on a pedestal with full knowledge of his character is to excuse and support his abuses. I purposely never purchased a gun just so I would not be in a position to use one foolishly. Most of the other men in our area were gun owners, and there was subtle pressure to purchase one, especially during the Y2K "preparations". I was treated as if I was not man enough to protect my family by not owning a gun. Funny incident: one rabid gun owner invited me and another twig coordinator to go shooting one night. After enduring a lecture from them both on the joys of gun ownership yada, yada, yada...I loaded my borrowed pistol and hit all but one shot in the bullseye. That was the first and last time that I'd fired a gun. It was real quiet on the drive home. In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice...but in practice there is Oakspear

Did you ever read that book C. Geer wrote? with updates
Oakspear replied to year2027's topic in About The Way
There were two books, one was Living Victoriously and the other was Take God at His Word, or something similar. As Lightside wrote, they were collections of Wierwille's teachings collected in book form, Living Victoriously taken specifically from the class of the same name that was done in 1982. They were sold in the Way bookstore while Geer and Martindale were still affiliated with each other. The content of the books was on par with the collaterals, especially Volume 5, which was also drawn from oral teachings, rather than short booklets like volumes 1-4 were. As I recall the binding was similar to that of the collaterals, the same two-tone coloring, LV in white and green and TGAHW in two-tone purple. I do not remember if they were numbered as part of the Studies in Abundant Living series however. Martindale made a big deal of the fact that the books used the phrase "posthumously edited by Chris Geer" on the title page. None of Wierwille's other books listed his editors so prominently, although he was alive when all his other books were published. They were published not by American Christian Press, but by European Christian Press. In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice...but in practice there is Oakspear -

Evan, a brilliant college student has always had blackouts during times of stress and trauma in his life. His psychiatrist recommends writing things down in a journal. One night, as he re-reads a section of one of the journals and finds himself reliving a traumatic experience from thirten years in the past, he remembers the details that had been blocked out. After some experimentation he finds he can do this at will when reading his journals, and that he can actually make changes in the past. After going back to his home town to visit his childhood friends, he sees how messed up their lives are, and decides to go back and change something that he believes was instrumental in their lives turning out so horribly. He succeeds in making the desired change; when he wakes up in the present, initially everything appears so much better, but not all is as it seems. The Evan of the new timeline is different in significant aspects from how he was before, yet he still has the memories from the original timeline, in addition to the new memories that come crowding painfully into his mind. An unintended result of his change is that while one friend's life turns out much better, another's is much worse. He goes back again to try to fix what he left unfixed the first time. It gets even worse. Each change spawns unforseen complications as Evan becomes alternately frantic to fix his mistakes and confident that he can simply go back and make everything alright. Add to the mix is Evan's father, who is permantly institutionalized, who appears to have had the same ability that Evan did, which is what possibly drove him mad. There were several spots where I thought the movie was ending, until another twist was thrown in. "What If" is always a fun game to play: how would one's life turn out iof one important decision was made differently? Guy wills himself back in time to change the events that caused his friends to have such messed up lives. For every fix, things get worse, much worse. There is suspense, action, and some nifty twists. It lives up to its previews! In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice...but in practice there is Oakspear

Hey guys, while I am capable of being mean spirited, I wasn't in this case. I saw an apparently (to me) negative remark about a faith choice that several of us here at GS have made, and was curious about why the remark was made. I've got no beef with any of the posters on this thread :D--> ISTW, can you check the private topics?, thanks In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice...but in practice there is Oakspear
