Imagine that. Having to wait to start a TCP service before TCP is running. Guess they shoulda kept Bo around. When I had to provide TCP services, all I got was a 386 box with 32meg of RAM and a downloaded CD of Slackware. And I was glad to get it.

Morel mushrooms. What I'd give for a plate of them, fried up. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and my mom and her mom knew all the places to find them. Under power lines, logging areas that had been burned over. Under the leaves near the river after a rain. We'd come home with grocery bags full. My mom would string them and dry them. Now I see them in the gourmet section of the store and the're $8 for two or three little dried ones...

I gave alot of money in the 70's. Probably closer to 25% of gross. I was single, living in a cheap appartment, working a professional job, earning good money, and no other life besides that and TWI. Which still wasn't good enough for some of the leadership. By the 80's I'd started to wise up and drift away.

I know I shouldn't be amused by this, but I just can't stop laughing... What did your mom say?

Ok, I'll go first... I have twin toes.

I saw a big, trailer-mounted tree shredder that the utilities use when they trim trees out of the power lines. The thing looked brand new and was totally plastered with warning stickers. The one I liked best was "It it the owner's responsiblity to replace any damaged or missing warning stickers"

Humm, you mean he didn't address the possiblity that maybe he was a false prophet?

Since 1970. And you know what? Since I left TWI, I don't have to feel guilty about being a geek.

Skyrider, Has anyone ever told you you're a damn fine writer? You are.

Nothing like sweating the next payroll to build your character is there? Been there, done that. It's clear that Loy hadn't.

That's correct. But you can also purchase a lifetime subscription. It's a big chunk of change at once, but cheaper in the long run since you don't get nickle-and-dimed every month. Note that the "lifetime subscription" is for the lifetime of the Tivo box, not the owner. This means that you can pick up boxes on ebay that have the lifetime subscription and will work as-such with no hassles. I've done that twice.

For the two I bought on ebay I paid $270-$290 each including shipping. These were Series 1 Sony Tivos with lifetime subscriptions. I think they were both upgraded, but I don't remember by how much. If you'd like any other information, send me an email. It's in my profile.

Anyone else own one? I bought my wife a Tivo for Christmas when they first came out. I got the lifetime subscription service and after the warranty expired, I upgraded it with a bigger hard drive. She's always loved it as it fit her viewing habits perfectly. Last summer I bought a used Series 1 Tivo on ebay (with a lifetime subscription) for the set in my bedroom. I added an ethernet adapter to it so that I could control it and suck off the video files from my home network. I bought another one on ebay and put it on the tv in the living room. It also has ethernet and can be controlled from my computer at home or at work. The irony here is that I don't even watch much tv. What I want is to make sure I record the shows I *want* to see and to be able to zip through the commercials. Tivo is perfect for that. I see no point in having a tv without Tivo.

I looked at the not-for-profit tax code once and it said that the not-for-profit group that wishes to disband has to give their assets to a similar type of group. Like that would ever happen...

I don't have one, but I bought my daughter a 30GB iPod for her birthday. Needless to say, she loves it. She also has the FM dongle and runs the Apple music cataloging program on her laptop. iPods are an incredible success story for Apple. I have heard that they are are the only thing keeping Apple profitable. My daughter likes the iPod so much, she wants to sell her nice Toshiba laptop and buy an iBook. Now as for me and my tech gadgets, we could talk about my 3 Tivo's, but that would be another thread.

Pretty nice. It's always good when the kids like something we make (: I've never bought a ready-made PC. I just finshed building 8 machines for work. I did 2 a night over the long weekend. I ended up with $800-$900 units for closer to $500 each and they are exactly as I want.

Reminds me of the Texas definition of high entertainment - a bug zapper and a six-pack. Now I've gotta go buy one.

Joyful Noise is gone too... I'd come back once to hear them again...

I'm with you Jonny. I'd like to see the inside and backstage of the auditorium at HQ, but that's about it.

The Raptors are about twice as expensive as the Maxtor, but for a server application they are still cheaper than SCSI. My primary server uses a pair of the 36 gig Raptors for drive C and a pair of 74 gig Raptors for drive D. All connect to a 3ware 8506-4LP hardware RAID controller, runing RAID 1 on each pair of drives. Our server only needs about 5 gig of storage at present, so the 74 gig volume will suffice for quite a while. I'm building a second server which will be used solely to backup the main server. It will have a pair of Maxtor 300 gig SATA drives running software RAID 1. The plan is for a rotating, automated nightly backup and a weekly archival backup of the main server shared volume onto it. One of the SATA drives will be removeable and be taken off-site each Friday night. So tell me what you're building?

What a sick fsking irony. Teach that a photographic memory is a devil spirit then use that ability to manipulate others. I feel like I need to stick my finger down my throat.

I seriously doubt that Christ or Paul would have done that to any of their followers. What makes LCM or VPW think that they can or should demand more?

Skyrider wrote in his spiritual abuse thread... This sentence touched a nerve with me. I can't memorize anything verbatim. I have to check my drivers license if someone asks for my house address. It takes a couple months to learn my phone number. Because of this, in TWI, I lived in constant dread of having to recite retimory cards or anything else that required exact, unerring memorization. Am I disabled? No, not at all. I have an excellent memory. The problem is that I can remember images and sounds but not words. None of this bothers me in the least, other than not being able to do any acting or performing that would require memorization. What does this have to do with TWI? I was treated as though I was stupid or lazy for not being able to recite Bible verses. I could see that if I were to go in the corps, there would be hell to pay. Anyone else have a physical or mental quirk that caused them unnecesary pain or embarrassment in TWI?
