I've fixed and programmed computers built from transistors and core memory. No microprocessors, no integrated circuits. I've seen steam locomotives run in regular service. My hometown didn't have dial phones until I was 14, the last town in the US to get them. I called out the emergency response team in a nuclear reactor building. My name is on 2 patents. I've worked in the video van at the ROA and at a Grateful Dead concert. I was elected and served 5 years on the Board of Directors of a public agency. I've been on television news twice - once good, once bad. I spent the night in a jail cell, but not because I did anything wrong. I've owned US, British, US, Japanese, German, US, and Japanese cars in that order. I currently belong to the cult of Subaru. I can take apart and reassemble an M-16 blindfolded. I ate beef tongue last week. And I still have twin toes.

"Warning Will Robinson, thread derailment ahead" You mean like the hookshot?

One last point and caution here. There's no autonomy on the net for ordinary users. ISP's can keep logs matching dynamic IP assignments to users' real names and addresses and courts can subpeona those logs. Furthermore, police agencies can get court orders requiring that these logs be kept and kept secretly. As we say "security through obscurity is no security". The odds of any of this affecting you are small, but not non-existant.

Demoted to corps alumni....and things are "better" now

It reminds me of my favorite scene in the movie "Cool Hand Luke". Luke had been run down and caught after an escape attempt. The guards are putting leg irons on him and captain tells him and the other prisoners "it's for his own good". Luke comes back with "wished you wouldn't treat me so good, captain" and the captain smacks him on the head with a blackjack. -
I guess that since you're invoked Godwin's Law, the thread is over. :)-->

You might even find them a spare AS/400 :)-->

I broke the rules by posting a phone number and Paw did the right thing by editing it. I didn't realize there was a phone number in the whois record. That said, if you own a domain name, you are *legally* required to provide public information as to your identity. Raf, there are ways to do an anonymous website, but if you want your own domain, you have to live with the fact that your ID will be public knowledge.

Sadly, I've known plenty of non-TWI people who would agree.
-
It depends on your perspective. To my mind, if the job can be done with commodity hardware for about 1/10 the price, I'd say the AS/400 is obsolete, regardless of whether or not people use them.

I guess the real question is "is everybody welcome at The Way" once again? Until I see it on their website, I won't believe it.

Congratulations. Here's what I did when I got my new car: Followed the break-in instructions. Followed the recommended oil change intervals. Used Mobil1 10W30 oil and factory oil filters. 105,000 miles and it runs like new.

I, You have to know a little bit about the history of the DP (that's what they used to call it) group at HQ. VPW would not consider *anything* but a designed IBM solution. To him, a computer was, and always was, "an IBM machine". So they have a computer room full of dinosaurs. And of course you're right. A linux box running Redhad for web service and email, a box running Win2003 server inside the firewall for file and print serving and you're done. We could do it for $2000 max and have it up over the weekend. But then it's not my abundant sharing paying for it anymore so I don't care. Here's some other thoughts why they *might* stick with the big iron. Could it be that their applications only run on the AS/400 and nobody is clever enough to port them over to a PC platform? Could it be that LCM's rantings about Microsoft, Gates and the devil prevent them from using his software in any sort of a coordinated way? Could it be that the one big machine and little workstations better fits the control-freak mentality of TWI? All are possibilities.

It's been over 20 years since I've seen a Way bumper sticker in California. And I drive a lot.

I'm with Chatty, Major fool This just in: Prince Charles, the lad's father, was "incandescent with rage" over the incident and has ordered him to visit Auschwitz to learn more about the Holocast. I couldn't think of a better response.

Definitely a good question. I came from a union/democrat family of coal miners, construction workers and trainmen. My first real job was boxboy at Safeway where I was *required* to join the union and pay dues and get *zero* benefits. I've not been fond of unions and the liberal cause ever since. But that's me. The unions had a place with the coal miners, construction workers and trainmen. But not with me. I resent that I must choose between /flaming liberalism/expensive social experiments/political correctness/Patriot Act/ *or* /questionable wars/billions for Boeing/GE/Halliburton/Standard Oil/Patriot Act/. I want us to try real hard to keep our hands off of other countries, work towards energy independence, stop corporate welfare, stop government employee welfare and defend personal freedoms. Religion is a little more difficult. Of all the religious/ethic people I've met, I love Jews the best. But I can't be a Jew, at least not by birth. So I have a lot of Jewish friends and I'm glad they like me. I still believe in Christianity. I don't go to church and I don't have a clue as to what's up with the Trinity. I don't often pray, but my wife says I should. If there's anything in the world that convinces me of God and Christ, it's Bach's choral music. I know that must sound strange, but if I could have an hour with you I think I could show you what I mean. I've also been reading the writings of Martin Luther. Interesting stuff.

Thanks Radar. All is well with the family. Lots of powder snow in the Sierras for the wife. :)-->

I guess I'd be more concerned with the port-scanning and web spidering windows box that's probably on linder's desk than the AS/400. He probably burns a couple CD's a day and carefully locks them away. While we're on the subject, If anyone gets an email from TWI, I'd like to see the full header text. It would be nice to know what the IP range is that's routed into TWI. I know we could do a whois on twi.org, but I think they use an outside web hosting service for that. I'm not suggesting that anyone do any evil with the information. It would be useful for checking weblogs to see where they are snooping around.

Well then, I have to ask the question... Who watches Southpark? I can usually stand 10 or 15 minutes of it before I have to walk away. The recent 'Walmart' episode was an exception and was hysterical.
