Speaking In Tongues With Interpretation "Battles"
tonto replied to J0nny Ling0's topic in About The Way
Tuttle-one, I did read the entire 9th thread. I started reading it one day and got hooked and had to back up and read the entire thing...this was during the year my father was dying. It provided the laughs and distraction I needed. I still check it every day... :) Sorry for the derail, Jonny. -
I'm more of a rule-breaker and risk-taker than my husband, and I feel free to tweak recipes when I cook. (I'll pour a half-cup of coffee into my pot roast just because). If we need to get someplace fast, I drive. If you have all day...Mr. Tonto is your man. Yeah, we balance each other out. But ex, you really got my attention when you mentioned Lyle. He's the real deal. Pat Green has a place up here, but your Lyle trumps my Pat anyday.

This is me and my first car...a 66 Mustang.

Funny story, Jonny. I like your stories, but my comment is to Tom T. Maybe this shows just how unspiritual I am, but this made my night: "Oh shanta malacasita, lo shanta, which being interpreted means How the ph uck are you, you sonofabitch??" I LOVED this kind of stuff...I know it sounds really weird, but when people did stuff like this it "blessed" me more than someone quoting verses to me. I didn't know you Jonny, and TomT I guess I didn't know you, but you guys with your earnest hearts and craziness are what I miss about TWI. Hugs from me to you guys. -
Another one from late 70's Colorado. Was unhappy with us when we left, and I sure hope he made it out in one piece.

She was in Colorado in the 70's, and I think she went into the corps...dunno...lost track of her even while we were still in. She was a sweet person...hope she's out and enjoying life.

Being kept under the thumb of a "believing" spouse
tonto replied to ChasUFarley's topic in About The Way
We came back to Texas in 1987 after we left TWI and knew a couple who had their own following...at the time we laughingly referred to it as "the other way". I'm curious who the sh*+-eating wife was. We were in Ft. Worth in the early 80's before going into the corps and it seems I heard that same "nutritional suggestion" given then. -
When I was a church-going teenager in the late 60's-early 70's, I tend to agree that the churches weren't doing their jobs in the youth programs offered. The Baptist church I belonged to tried to be "groovy" by having the youth choir wear tie-dyed t-shirts while performing "Pass It On"...a musical about spreading the good news of salvation. I'm not knocking that, but it wasn't enough. Church was still stuffy, the adult's hair was still sprayed helmet-stiff, and there was real suspicion of long-haired young people who listenened to rock music. There was a very real generation gap, and I don't believe the churches did enough to appeal to youth. I believe many of today's churches offer what was lacking in those days. For me personally, I'm just not interested in group worship anymore.

John Hendricks was the corps coordinator when I was in the family corps. We heard that he wasn't as legalistic as the previous one at Rome City (Moneyhands?...it's been so long, but I think Bob and Dotty were the ones in charge the year before we arrived). Anyway, Wierwille came to our campus frequently that year and had made mention that he was impressed by John's business sense...I believe he had owned a landscaping company, and we know how money impressed the he11 out of VP. Anyway, in our first year there was a family who abruptly left. Slon*kers, I believe...a married couple and their maybe two-year old boy. Their leaving came as a surprise to us, and afterward Hendricks held a meeting in the chapel with all the in-resident corps and proceeded to trash them. I don't know if they were guilty of the accusations, but it bothered hubs and I that they weren't there to defend themselves. In fact, those two years we frequently talked about the "power of the one who held the microphone", and how unfair many things were, but we talked privately. My general impression those two years was that he could have been worse...not exactly a glowing endorsement.

How about a hot cup of Postum? Anyone else here remember Postum?

Rhino, The "chain" is merely a defect in the picture...it probably became funkified by poor storage. It's actually a cropped shot. I scanned and sent the whole picture, front and back, to Greasytech, who plans to do something with it for the cafe. And George, "Das Spankenhaus"! You made my morning, thanks!!!

What about the folks that were always "getting delivered" every other minute? "That teaching really delivered me", or "I got so delivered from that tape"...just how screwed up does a person have to be if they have to be delivered two or three times a week? "Just"...yeah, that was sure one over-used word.

I just had some Irish coffee while watching an old tearjerker "An Imitation of Life". What a good way to spend a lazy Saturday afternoon...

I can't help but notice that this thread was about silly reproof some of us dished out, not reproof we were on the receiving end of. I have no problem remembering the times it was dished out to me, but I've tried to remember when I gave it out, and I can't. It doesn't mean I wasn't guilty of it, it just means that it's not necessasarily memorable unless you're the recipient. It bothers me that I could be part of someone's bad memory out there. I've talked to a couple of people who were lower in the TWI food chain than I, and have apologized for anything I might have said or done that was offensive. They said I/we didn't do anything harmful to them, but still...

O.K., I know this is supposed to be about books and not tv, but either the History Channel or PBS recently aired a documentary about Guns, Germs, and Steel...excellent.

Did the way corps training help you in your profession?
tonto replied to ex10's topic in About The Way
I think it helped me learn to multi-task, and I'm pretty good at details, but I can't think of one job I had in the corps work program that helped me in the real world. My last year in residence I went to headquarters for the day with the wife of our corps coordinator...I felt like it might have been an interview of sorts...anyway, when I voiced my concern that none of the corps jobs would help us get a job in the real world, she looked as though I slapped her in the face. I really didn't intend to be insulting, but I think that comment alone red-flagged me as not being ideal TWIT leadership wife material. -
David, did I miss something? I don't get the significance of the Lower Lights link... Belle, Dooj and I knew each other for about a year many years ago and I didn't realize she still lived in this area. Yep, it was fun and we plan for our families to get together sometime when we can all get our schedules to jive... And yes, it was great seeing her and her work in person.
-
Karmicdebt, you're a David Sedaris fan too? Lonesome Dove was the first book I read after leaving TWI so it will always have a special place in my heart.

Saw this cartoon maybe in the late 80's-early 90's and it reminded me of ROA. A few years ago I added to it...

Last week I had lunch with doojable (hadn't seen her in probably 15 years...she looks great and such fun to be around...a real fireball!) Afterwards we went to the gallery where some of her work is on display. It was so nice to see her beautiful paintings in person. Divine Design missed out when they didn't utilize her talents.

The development date on the back is June 1986. I think this is from Mona's interim year in Florida...but I'm not positive. Thanks for moving it to the Gallery, GreasyTech. Bookends...that's it. Red-eyed bookends.
