Maybe not, but it is COLD, real COLD out there today-- the windchill is below zero...They say it wont, but its not exactly something you will find many from San Diego are used to........Of course Brady has his personal army of supermodels to keep him warm so he should be fine

Yea its probably good that they dropped "Beaneaters", although they may have missed their chance for a bit part in I read somewhere recently that it was common for overthrow crowds to be allowed onto the field. Earlier this year I found a pic of Fenway where fans were on the field well into the 1940s--by then it was restricted to the outfield. I dont know if I would want to be as close as those Highlander fans-at least not these days.... They werent nearly as close as Boston fans were during the 1903 World Series though Ive always loved this picture

I know that the Red Sox went through quite a few names (the Pilgrims, the Americans, and some others I cant remember right now) before settling into the Red Sox. I have never heard of the Boston Yankees before that I remember but from the 1860s to 1900 there were a pile of Boston teams that either changed names every few years, or existed only for a year or two and they could be in there somewhere--some of the names were very colorful. The Braves were originally the Beaneaters. I never realized that the Highlanders were originally in Baltimore until now. I had assumed that the Highlanders evolved from the days of the Elysian Fields teams in Hoboken....I was wrong....I wonder what that whole transaction was about...Did the Orioles have too much competition from the rival Baltimore Canaries at the time?? :) In those photos up a few posts there are some good shots of the Highlanders in their pre Yankee Stadium days. Hilltop Park 1908 I also noticed that instead of beer ads in the stadiums, like we have now, in most of those old pics the stadiums were plastered with Whiskey and Gin ads--It mustve been a little rough in some of those old ballparks

I have to ask the obvious question..The rumor throughout Wayville for years was that these guys were "tripped out grads" who had been involved early then decided to leave- and that "Carry On My Wayward Son" was written when they left. Does anyone know if there is any truth to that.. btw--I was a fan in the very early part and throughout 70's, saw them live in a very small venue (about 350 people)before their fame hit and was amazed...

I thought excie might..Which ones would you like? They are all (all of them) HERE. Boxscores and play by play of every postseason game since 1903. Poke around alittle bit they are fun to read. Some people dont, but I love boxscores myself...After finding that picture of the 1912 team. To me it was great to be able to look up and see, who those guys that I was mostly unfamiliar with, were, what they did and recreate through the box scores the games of what was an incredibly exciting series.with legendary and mythic players. I felt as if I was watching that series reading about it early this morning, but thats just me..... If anyone else gets bored like I do during the offseason and needs a game to relive or review http://www.retrosheet.org has about 100 years worth of boxscores another good starting place for stats and a mountain of great miscellaneous info that can be fun to read if your into such things http://www.baseball-reference.com/ which goes back to 1871-- If Im not there I'll probably be busy breakin in my new glove

HERE is a picture from Spring training 1912 of the Red Sox who would go on that year to a 105-47 record and win the World Series over the Giants This is about a month before the very first game at Fenway Park which this group would christen ( one day after the Titanic disaster). Smoky Joe Wood (I think he is the first guy in the 2nd row) was 22 and would pitch to a 34-5 record that year. Tris Speaker (3rd row 2nd in (I think))the CFer was 24yo, hit .383 and had 35 outfield assists (a record that still stands) 1912 Team Stats 1912 World Series. These Red Sox scored two runs in the bottom of the 10th off of Christy Mathewson to come from behind and win the final game and the World Series

27 days until Pitchers and Catchers report--- in the meantime-- If old pictures interest you The Library of Congress recently released 3,000 photos on Flickr, as part of a pilot project in "crowdsourcing" the identification and tagging of its photo archives: Heres what I have found so far: Baseball Photos Search Libarary of Congress baseball Photos Steve Yerkes Fenway Park 1912 I sat behind that same pole up the firstbase line 90 years later

I saw that LINK TO STORY The guy went to 5 games in 6 years and wants a refund because he didnt see real baseball. (/mstar forcedly represses comment about the Yankees here) It is sort of a waste of the courts time but it will be interesting (well a little anyway) what they say. Even though its only for $200 and something, i suppose they have to show, defend and win or every baseball fan for the last umpteen years could also demand a refund

i dont know what the question is When did the legalism start? or When did it get extreme? To me it was always legalistic..By the time I entered in the late 70's, you were expected to do a number of things everyday, Awake before 7, read "the word', speak in tongues, pray for the first 1/2 hour at least everyday, witness, go to fellowship (enthusiastically), volunteer for class crews, tithe, abundantly share, rake the limb coordinators yard.hang only with 'believers' ..etc etc..etc etc etc No matter what they said --It was 'the law' to do these and ahundred other things or you were looked on unfavorably...To me looking back to then THAT was extreme.....even though it hadnt reached the completely bizarre and absurd levels of the 90s yet, they were well on there way from the beginning

True--but as far as I know, for all of their divine attributes neither Joseph Smith nor L. Ron Hubbard could hit a curveball

Amazing Brady 26 for 28 unbelievable The Patriots offensive line put on one of the biggest clinics Ive seen in quite a while . Aside from the first possession sack, Brady had however much time he wanted to throw the ball all night. The Jags D-Line is one of the very best and they spent the majority of this game either five yards off the play or on their asses. Start to finish, that group owned this game

NO! Its a bonafide mainstream religion with millions upon millions of worldwide followers who find some form of contentment in it and generally lead somewhat productive lives...except on some gamedays and while in the playoffs

Hopefully next year will be Jim's year, its his last year on the ballot. I think a big thing was that although he had many dominant years for the era, he didnt play long enough to amass the numbers that attract the rave reviews . Hopefully next year there will be enough 'umph' to push him just that little bit further... He was absolutely fearsome when he was in the box... I think alot of people move for 'love' or for a once in a lifetime event. Its different but not all that abnormal Ive done it myself for a few women over the course of my life- -- in retrospect it would have been better to do it for a team. Probably not now, but I would've done it in my twenties--but in all my grand wisdom I was in a cult instead ---now that was unhealthy

well i was musing on the Rice drive in the ninth earlier and you have to wonder "what if" it did sail over Lou's head in that brilliant sun that day and the Red Sox had scored in the ninth then went on to beat the Dodgers......no one may have ever heard of the "Curse Of The Bambino" for one thing which wasnt launched until the late 80's, I know of at least a few people who moved during 86, uprooting families, lives and careers to watch the Red Sox win it all in 86 which of course never happened but they did move ---changing somewhat of their destinies alomg the way, How many lives did that effect? Would those who own the team now, have been so interested, if the Red Sox were just another franchise? Would there be a Fenway Park if there were different owners? Would there be a "Red Sox Nation" or even aneed for one today? Would Jim Rice have been elected instead of Goassage the other day? Who knows?...these winter days get long to wonder on things ....time perpetually changes on a dime -- which baseball illustrates for us over and over hundreds of times each year ..all it is is one fly ball, in one half inning of one game that is over 29 years past. what an amazing game is baseball

Gawd -- the Celtics lost the other night It was a 4th quarter of unbearble suffering, How long? How long? must we put up with these horrors? There hasnt been a win in any sport for almost three days, nor any type of championship at all since October! OCTOBER! I dont know how much longer I can take this...

Yea congratulations to the Goose. Relievers are becoming an accepted part of the hall which is a good thing....Thats about 5 now. Good for Mr. Fu Manchu My memories of that game are a little foggy but he did pitch the last 2 or 3, He did get hit pretty good (about 5 or 6 hits and 2 runs) and Lou Pinella made two miraculous plays in the "sun field"; in right to save runs ( the last a deep liner by Jim Rice to right center directly in the sun in the ninth with one out and runners on. After Gossage got Yastrzemski to pop to Nettles(?) at third for the final out I sat motionless in stunned silence (That moment could be in a 'deafening silence ' thread...) along with the rest of Fenway for a good 20 minutes before I could reorient myself enough to stand up and walk out. That sukked.... but i have to admit Goosage did do his job well with alittle help from Sweet Lou Guidry (if i remember correctly) who had a phenomenal year got the win and Gossage the long save.... To me it is sort of curious that Jim Rice missed by just an inch in his vote for the hall just as he did in the ninth on that October afternoon off of Gossage. All these years later --I wonder what things (if any) would be different if that one hit had gone a few inches further

It always cracked me up hearing Mr Viagra saying he had never used performance Enhancing Drugs... --yea Ok Raf...........Rog has already changed his story from Mcnamee never injecting him with drugs (on that video) to a few weeks later injecting him with lidocaine and B12. From Toms sig line: is from Nick the bartender-- One of the next lines in that movie , if not the very next line is what I wrote-I figured Tom might get it
-
..and another thing....why do you keep calling me Nick?? ......Im having trouble seeing your pictures, but I have some ideas who you may have ....I'll get to see it in a few days when i get home........ I was looking at Koufax's record a few months ago ( i dont have it in front of me right now) and I have to wonder how long he would have lasted if he was in todays market where players are treated with a little more care. In 65 and 66 when he was known to have an arthritic elbow he pitched well over 300 innings in both seasons and pitched several times on two days rest. He was incredible but I have to wonder how much longer he would have been around if the Dodgers werent so shortsighted about his career............ I am curious, have the stRangers evereven made the playoffs?, I had assumed that they had, they always seem to be pretty good, well--most years anyway-- but thinking back on it Im not really that sure, Yikes --does this stretch back into the Senators days? that cant be right can it? Its time----Im gonna root for the stRangers ------- enough is enough ................................................. It ought to be interesting to have both Mcnamee and Rog testifying to Congress-- anyone taking bets who gets charged with perjury

Humorous article for a snow day: Baseball History In a Nutshell

I must be getting spoiled, I remember saying this back during baseball season as well, that even though the Pats won, they didnt play nearly as well as they are capable. I guess that is a luxury that I have these days but to me they didnt look all that great. Sure 16-0 looks nice, but they havent won anything yet. They'll have to tighten some things up, There is no room for error in the playoffs

Im not exactly sure which one it was, Im not that familiar with the Episcopalian traditions or its nuances.. as I said I just happened to walk in on it which was enough for me at the time to be uplifted FWIW Here is the The order of the service (or most of it anyway), maybe you can tell which one it was from this: Prelude -Pastoral, Op.19 Cesar Franck Hymn - O Little Town Of Bethlehem Lords Prayer Carol - Up!
