Dang! I had forgotten about "rightly dividing" the TV .of course I didnt have that problem much since I didnt own a TV for 7 or 8 years when I was in. Music--especially "natural man" music was also heavily heavily frowned upon. Most likely anything (and I mean anything...)that wasnt ministry produced and sanctioned was done by possessed people.. LCM even laid into some in ministry music from time to time. Damn when I think of the music collection I had as a kid that went to the Uncle Harry burn pile it makes me sick. You do know we had a burnin day didnt you? Books, records, a whole lot of stuff got coerced into that pile It was straight out of the middle ages

oops-i stand corrected-thankfully Im starting to forget their stuff -- Another implied 'forbidden'--in almost no circumstance was it right to say NO to a request by someone higher on the food chain than you. If you did you werent 'committed' . If the branch or limb dude needed his house painted, yard cleaned, children babysat, errands run, or any other little thing that he deemed important, you had the abilities to do it and he asked you--you were expected to perform it no matter what the inconvenience to you

I went last year to N.O and as much as I love New Orleans as a city, I was wondering if it were time to allow the seas to claim it. Im not an engineer but even I could see the inherent weaknesses in the protection system that was being built. If it is to be saved then a concerted effort to build it right, proper and strong as possible would be in order..Half measures that may or may not hold, or cutting corners for financial reasons that still leave the area vulnerable really are a waste of money and time. To my untrained eye that appeared to be the strategy--to build what they could and combine it liberally with prayer and hope, instead of what they really needed to build. To me that invites disaster, which I certainly hope that I am wrong Aside from all that Im doing my 'prayer and hoping' part that it misses N.O. and finds someplace that will do as little damage as possible. This is making me feel sick Good Luck everyone out there

well whaddaya know--- I think that Manny leaving is one reason Im sort of in a baseball depression and having a hard time getting enthused right now, even though things are going Ok on this end. Dustin Pedroia had his second straight four hit game after hitting a grand slam earlier this week, and even batted cleanup (not bad for a guy about the size of Wee Willie Keeler speaking of the Superbas) behind Ortiz last night. There were chants of MVP last night.. As good as that all is...im still in Manny withdrawals to some extent. I know the Red Sox have a good record without him, (better than the Superbas do with him) and are probably in a technical sense a better team, but when Manny is in one of his insane hot streaks --its nothing like I have ever seen..and I miss it... It seems like the NL is having fun with him. I saw a clip from Washington the other day. During that thing the do, the "President's Race".,Teddy Roosevelt came out wearing a blue 'do rag' with dreadlocks sticking out from under it, took a huge early lead, stopped to high five a few fan and then turned around and gave up. The announcer said the he was just "Teddy bein' Teddy..." Manny just laughed in LF No doubt about it--he is fun to watch a sappy tribute video, one of hundreds made by Sox fans

don't know if this was covered or not Dont EVER EVER pray to "Jesus", in fact dont even ever say Jesus. its only acceptable if you follow it or precede it with "Christ". You can however swear like a trooper--thats fine. IIRC from way theology anyone who mentions 'Jesus" is talking to a devil.

For the good of the board I better leave that comment alone...

Doctors --true enough God Forbid you ever even thought of seeing a psychiatrist or a therapist i havent got a list and it was along time ago but There were a lot of 'unwritten rules' of things forbidden. I got yelled at for not standing when the head branch guy entered the room (I disrespected the word ) a girl in my twig got yelled at for crying when her mother was in the hospital. (shows lack of believing) there was a "correct" way and time for near everything. dont ever ever have a question at the wrong time

Thats the last I remember hearing. He was mixing paint and selling step ladders in Bee yoo tee full Toledo, Later some one came in here who met him (Jung,,Ithink) who said he wrote every little thing down in a notebook but didnt say what. It could be the paint formula for seafoam green for all I know Dont know, dont really care I dont like to see anyones family broken up--but if anyone anywhere needed to be knocked off his high horse and down a few notches it was him

I'll post one more obligatory photo for the burgeoning Jamie Kotsay Fan Club-- I know this thread is about baseball and that you will be highly interested in her ----um----batting stance---

I have nothing to add to whatever is being talked about--its just good to hear the name Frank Howard again. I saw him hit some of those amazing towering scrape the sky homeruns that looked they would never come down in his day. When I ran into George (Boomer) Scott last year he was like an awestruck child telling me that the hardest ball that he ever saw hit was by him. He claimed a line drive hit by Howard was hit so hard that it tipped off the shortstops glove and continued to rise then landed high in the second deck of RFK...whether tall tale or true I'll never know-- but Scott's eyes lighting up like an 8 year olds when he was telling it was well worth it... There are probably guys as big now but when I was 10 Frank Howard looked like a mountain

I dont know stRanger---Im in my late season doldrums right at the moment--Im having alot of things going on outside of baseball at the moment (believe it or not..) some of the details for the last few weeks Im not following closely enough to have an informed opinion on.... Im sure I'll regret baseball slackin now when I am stuck in the middle of January--but for now my hands are full elsewhere. If things are as bad as the rumors seem with Beckett, Millwood may be a good pickup. Im still trying to get to know Mark Kotsay I found THIS WIKI LINK that lists all his worthwhile career accomplishments

as i was saying--the human element--- IMO It has to stay part of the game

I know umpires miss calls (sorry Lifted), often at unopportune times and maybe even a certain percentage if someone really examined it, but my argument has been (and as Ive been saying i only have the lo-tech version here) the machines seem to do the same thing. Pitches just off the corners of the box will be called strikes, and consistantly called strikes throughout an entire game without beef from the batters Others that appear to be in the box (say --low) may be called balls throughout a game but will be consistantly in the box. After watching it for a few weeks I noticed that ours at least had its own peculair strike zone that was off XX percentage of the time--even though no batters were beefing about it--so I grew to distrust it. It really only gave me one more thing to complain about because I was believing it too often.. I know umps make mistakes, and once in awhile just like players they can have an off night but they are highly trained and reviewed and generally within accepted margins of error. I know thats Its too often over the years been an incredibly real Pain in the a$$ when a bad call is made but its also part of the uncontrollable human element of the game, which I think is very important not to loose...humans for all their imperfections play the game ...and umpire them as well.....its not perfect and never will be --thats part of the appeal

I concur--i will enjoy having Jamie Kotsay in town look re:the boxes--you can have all the laser driven ultrahigh tech, sccurate to an angstrom NASA gizmos you want for your TV you're still eventually gonna have to get some real flippin' pitchin'!!! Theres some kid in Venezuela or the Dominican or ..who knows...China... playing in a field right this moment who could be the next Koufax--but nobody knows where he is.....get your NASA techies on finding him

I still say the box is off, of course i dont watch those fancy dan national broadcast that have the slow motion arc and whooshy sound effects very much , but the one on NESN which is pretty much the equivalent of scrawling a box in chalk on the brick schoolhouse wall.. ...if they're gonna go this route why not just put a tire or a tomato box back there to throw into and have that be a strike? then they'd probably have to have 22 instant replay cams to see if it went in the box Mark Kotsay? Good ---another guy with a painful bulging disc....just what we need do we get his wife too? shes in pretty good shape...Id let her play on my team :)

Anybody got a map and a great big red marker? On another thread Another Dan is ready to head to Colorado for the "clambake", it might be a little tough to find Alton from there

(Boo) --although I guess its OK. .....I was ticked off 20 years ago (maybe it was 30??) when they put the huge electric scoreboard with the video woop de doo in CF in Fenway..Its been a downhill ride gaining momentum chipping away whats left ever since then... They market everything now ....When I was kid ( damn Im sounding old...) the left field wall was the left field wall not "The Green Monster"(its not even really that green anymore its all covered with ads), The Right field foul pole is now "The Pesky Pole, , the bullpens "Williamsburg", The LF Pole "The Fisk Pole", ad nauseum... im sure if they could get ad money from Scotts Turf Builder they'd name the individual blades of grass.... I love Fenway and it has history out the wazoo that I'm attached to--but there are times--many times when Id just as soon watch kids playing a game of scrub somewhere where the sun is shining, the grass is green and no one is in my face selling me something...

I dont know----I was ultra enthused back in the early 60's when i was watching astronauts taking off on the black and white TV----now a friend of mines son is working on the project that is determining if there was water on Mars millions of years ago---Its interesting but is so far removed from my everyday life-(water a million years ago on another planet?) and concerns -except of for the fact that he is working on it. In one sense anything that helps in understanding the fabric of the universe is very good, incredibly interesting etc.. but I wonder sometimes if the money and research could be better spent elsewhere or on more pressing and down to earth needs--like ending starvation or eradicating some disease or something

That crap is really really starting to bug me-especially on the televised games where every steal is brough to you by "LoJack" every passed ball is sponsored "Beano" (or something) and every conceivable moment of the game is advertising and if not advertising then noise making graphics that whistle and whir and ding. When I was at a nationally televised FOX saturday game and the announcer said "The seventh inning stretch brought to you by Coke", I wanted to scream. ( probably did) Thankfully at least Fenway doesnt have one of those gawdawful annoyance machines around the deck that they have near everywhere now Its way way way overdone....It struck home when I watched a full game from 1967 on DVD a year or so ago---very minimal graphics if any, almost no announcing really, and if there was any advertising It was very very simple and unobtusive ( Hi neighbor--have a 'gansett) and only when there was a pitching change or something slowed the pace way way down....--mostly the entire DVD just had a game on which you could watch for your self and enjoy without the mountains of BS surrounding it.... ..... Interesting on the WhiteSox/Orioles. did they commence with the same lineups (or whoever was still on the roster) If the two teams had done a trade between the suspension and the finish would it be possible for someone to be in a boxscore on both sides of the ledger? That would be a accomplishment... Tonight the Red Sox final final series ever at Yankee Stadium starts. Still hard for me to believe, some Yankee friends are going into panic mode
-
Ive never been to games in LA but they sound like great places to watch ballgames---other than the noise thing..... I dont mind genuine heartfelt fan emotion and response to play on the field--in fact I like it.... But every time I see one of those "Make Some Noise" scoreboards or hear the canned trumpet (or whatever)I almost always get unbearably ornery. The quiet moments, where nothing major except reflection is going on, is part of the game rhythm that makes the spontaneous excitement all the better for me Maybe its just me --that I hate to ever be told what to do--but especially when Im enjoying myself at a game

If you were more than 50 miles away from the coast most likely. Rule of Thumb: Quality of seafood decreases exponentially the further you get from the ocean Its best right on the water, 10 miles away still OK, 25 OK but noticable decrease 100 still recognizable as seafood but not by much 150+ still has the same name but unsure as to what it actually is although it seems to be edible 250+ "clams" are probably are erasers or rubber bands
