Simon told me a great story about that game once ---maybe he'll relay it. At some point I'd like to find some more info on the Ernie Shore game in 1917. Babe Ruth started the game, walked the first batter at which Ruth argued apparently even throwing punches at the ump..He was ejected.. Ernie Shore came into pitch --The runner was thrown out stealing and Shore retired the next 26 in a row. He faced 26 and got 27 outs Is that a perfect game? in relief no less?

what a horror that would be! Thats something Ive been curious about for years: Umpire positioning I understand the situation when there are only two umps that there are all sorts of variables to cover, but even in the majors depending on the situation and how many men are on base, it is still not as simple as I would think it to be. The second base umps especially seem to reposition themselves and I am often surprised when I happen to notice an odd set up by field umps. A good percentage of questionable or bad calls seem to come from when an umpire situates himself or finds himself at a less than optimum vantage point. Im pretty sure it wouldnt be a haphazard thing or "personal preference' at least I would guess not. Are you umps taught proper positioning and specific places to be in certain situations?

http://mlb.mlb.com/media/video.jsp?mid=200808313397707 Well I finally got to see the clip of the play In sabathias game that Simon was talking about a few days back...I didnt realize that Sabathia had finished the game with a one -hitter The clip is very good quality for discussing error vs. hit. It's a very open interpretation. I think that if Sabathia fields that cleanly he makes the play. LaRoche was still about 2/3 of the way and would easily have been out on a good throw. That makes it an error. On the other hand, even for a pitcher, Sabathia was incredibly slow hauling his big carcass off the mound to make that play and it would have been at least slightly close as a result. If Fielder had to go get that throw at first LaRoche might have been safe. If CC had a good jump on the ball he'd have himself a no-hitter because he wouldn't have had to rush the play in the first place. I think someone appealed a scorers ruling earlier this year and actually won (it reduced someones ERA), but a no-hitter is such an "in the moment" thing, that it would be sort of odd from a fan standpoint to know that they saw a retroactive no hitter two weeks ago (or whenever the ruling comes down) when they thought that they hadn't. I doubt that they'll change it--has anyone heard of any final ruling on the Brewers appeal yet? Edit: I went and found it-- RULING Nope--No change No no-no for C.C.

WOW! Really? How do they know these great things? This photo was dubbed "Kitchen Table" With this type of in depth spiritual perception and awareness I better go sign up right away! -
I went to the HOF website to see who was on the veterans committee figurin I could write em each a letter but I couldnt find out who was on it. If anyof you guys ever find out who to write lemme know--Id stand up for a stand up guy like Santo... I got home early today and just happened to turn on the tube to find an afternoon game.. Sox down 4-0 in the 7th, score 4 in the 7th and 8th to tie it --and then walk off in the ninth. I just might start to like this team again :) 3 More hits for Pedroia today he's hitting .400 for the last 2 months. I like the idea of having 'the midget' battin cleanup Check how tiny he is in this picture--he's like 3 feet tall by the time he swings Someone photoshopped this but this is basically what it really looks like when he is up at the plate Little Man--Big bat
-
I dont understand why they continually overlook Santo--his numbers are actually better than Brooks Robinson, had 9 AllStar appearances, 5 Gold Gloves. His average was a little low (.277) but he played in a pitchers era ( Gibson, Koufax, Marichal, Drysdale, Seaver etc) and its still better than some other third basemen that are already enshrined. I never know he was playing all those years with diabetes either. Hopefully the Veterans Committee will vote him in soon

There are all sorts of arguments for MVP--some people go for the biggest numbers--I agree with "the most valuable" to their team component as being the real criteria..In the last few years around here Ortiz was left off some lists because he was a DH, Pedro Martinez missed in about 99-00 for being pitcher and one writer left him off the ballot totally. To me it doesnt make a difference. If someone is "valuable" then they are "valuable" and they deserve to be considered--the writers who vote are an odd lot though--so you never really know. If the Dodgers had all of a sudden skyrocketed when manny came aboard there might be a better chance for the writers to note it, and maybe he could finish in the middle of the pack somewhere--but as far as I know they are prob a little over .500, since then...so its a moot point and they wont look. valuable is valuable though As far as the hall and Maris..I can see your point. Although he wouldnt be a traditional HOF'er if you took out 1961, That one year was more than momentous enough. Bill Mazeroski was a good player but nothing overtly outstanding (imo) he made it in largely on the back of not even a year but one at bat. id put him in although he is sort of on the cusp..some others who arent in--like Ron Santo, who I remember as the NL thirdbaseman of that generation, totally baffles me
-
Im not saying they'll win but its not inconceivable that they could finish in the top 3 or 4 for what theyve done for their teams. I finally watched part of last nights game flickin through the channels. I knew that Pedroia was hot, but at the beginning of the game they had him at .688 for the previous 5 or 6 games --That dropped when He "only" went 3-5 last night with a double and a HR---mustve been an off night.
-
You think so? That would be amazing if he finished high in the balloting and /or if Sabathia did the same in the CY. From a distance he looks a lot happier and being in a place like LA he may forego his vacation this year(to say nothing about it being a contract year).. If he's happy, enthused, and enjoying himself he'll play good down the stretch, maybe even make a few great plays with a few Manny gaffes tossed in. Its funny--after so many years--you can almost follow his moods by his body english and to a certain extent project his play. He's generally at his best when he is playful, laughing and joking alot and huggy, if he looks sullen his play generally drops off. Is there any noise about keeping him out there yet? probably too early to know, but if they'll shell out $18m/year for Andruw, Manny would be a comparative bargain at about $23m or so
-
I think that if it still hurts there are physical problems but maybe more so confidence problems --he really got walloped last time out. Knowing you cant really go back for that little extra when you need it, especially if you are the type of pitcher who relies on that, has to be concerning, and from my observation one of the worst things in baseball is a pitcher who doesnt have confidence in his stuff Last year they had the big lead, so even though it was dwindling down the stretch, just about everyone had time to heal up pretty good before the playoffs started-including Beckett--which paid off. They wont have that luxury this year and there are a lot of guys banged up Which reminds me --I dont know if LA is going to be able to give Manny his 3 week vacation which he gets every year about this time :) He'll be great in the playoffs if they give him a few weeks to relax by his pool in Florida. He may have that mysterious hamstring injury, that no one ever knows on which leg, any day now

I have no idea--Im on hiatus and in some sort of change--maybe its just the after effects of Lyme disease that I got amonth or so ago-dont really know---Ive been less than enthusiastic. The TV's been off, games have been off, rarely reading the papers and Ive only caught a few innings here and there for a few weeks. I saw where our boy Michael Bowden who we talked about a month or so ago came up from AA and pitched a good game and got his first major league win, Pedroia is on fire, jamie Kotsay is cute, other than that Im at a loss as to the finer points of whats going on--including Becketts million dollar elbow. When he is on he is unbelievable, I was at the last game he pitched and it was like they were playing TBall with him. 2 or 3 innings about 12 runs. He's an enigma. Last year he was great-- two years ago he was mediocre, This year --eh--. He does really well in years ending in odd numbers, the even numbers not so much. I'll see what i can find out Edit: Francona: Awesome test--everything is structurally sound Beckett:Dr. Andrews said my ligament looked fine. Tommy John surgery is what I was afraid of. They did every test they could possibly do. Put me in a vice, shot dye in there, put me in an MRI machine. apparently its "inflammation"

Didnt Wierwille mention something in the 'advanced class' about aspirin being able to hold back some devil spirits? <_< I distinctly remember that although I forget the context.. ........... They must be cheese spirits riding in on the cheese--I get those cheese headaches too, in fact I have one now that Ive had for two days Im sure given the opportunity some good old wafer would concoct a very elaborate pitch about mold and spores, the fall of man, the descent into darkness and tie them all into the evils inherent in cheesemaking---then present it as if it were the greatest revelation since the first century. Me? Im just allegic to it

Good for Taylor Ive never seen him-- but Ive heard nothing but good about that kid. were you noticing his game calling at all? of course with the Rangers staff as it is I suppose it would be very hard to tell if it was a plus or minus
-
It was used primarily as a means to control the naive rank and file. "Discerning of Spirits" in practice was usually nothing more than someone complaining about something they didnt like or didnt understand then attempting to spiritualize it, and calling it a "devil spirit". "Word of Knowledge" and "Word of Wisdom" worked the same way It gave 'leaders' a phony air of knowing something or having a connection to God that the underlings didnt
-
They also had a phrase: "In depth spiritual perception and awareness" that if developed by utilizing "all 9 ( manifestations) all the time" would bring you to being "more than a conqueror" They certainly had an entire cosmology of catchy catch phrases. That I know :) maybe someone can tackle the hierarachy of devil spirits which IIRC was much more developed in TWI than the angelic side. The devils (daimon and daimonion) had a whole ranking system set up from 5 star generals to privates and each had different functions

FIFTH INNING?!?{/i] You had me going for a minute Simon I though it was a two outs in the eighth deal or something.... It was a good lead in to let me know about Milt Pappas though! Which brings up another point, I know when I was a kid I used to always think "maybe today I'll see a nohitter", and the first hit--even if it was the first batter I made the mental note that the 'no hitter' was gone. Thats sort of faded now and i dont really think about it that much if at all if at all Ive been lucky enough recently to see two --last year Clay Buchholz against the O's (One year anniversary today) and Jon Lester's earlier this year. The announcers of course never mention it because of the jinx element, When one is happening I have to be honest and say it usually doesnt dawn on me until the 6th or so , when I start to think---" he hasnt given up a hit yet", THEN I start to track that aspect of the game closer and that tension and excitement starts to build. Whens is no hitter really starting to be a potential no hitter for you guys? I know Simon follows much closer than me but to me--a hit in the fifth is disappointing- (a questionable hit would undoubtably be much worse) but its still too early to really tell if you are on to something else besides a great 5 innings . Just curious (posted before coffee right out of a dead sleep--does this make any sense to yous?)
-
I missed the Sabathia game today---I spose I should turn on the TV and find out but since Im here (!) what inning was it when this happened? was the game close? was it worthy of a bunt situation? As much as I hate questionable errors in a situation like that, Im also not too impressed by someone who attempts to bunts for a basehit in a no hitter unless its a 1-0 game or something I dont mind a good solid clean hit breaking up a nohitter (well I do really but at least its clean and there is no doubt about it..) they even leave enough in your mind. Last year Schilling shook off Varitek in the ninth f and gave up the only hit on that very pitch. Which leaves me (and everyone else) to play "what if" for the rest of my life. BUT something that is a borderline judgment call on something questionable would drive me nuts...... ......I cant believe that a borderline 3-2 pitch with two outs in the ninth in a frikkin perfect game was called a ball. Thats Somehow I missed that when it happened (I was probably stoned) I found an interview with Pappas about that game HERE he actually had him at 0-2

Its part of the massive holes in TWI theology. We were once taught that anyone who "confessed Jesus as lord,, and believed God raised him from the dead" received the gift of holy spirit, eternal life, and "all hell couldnt stop you from going to heaven". However, When the going got rough especially in the late 80's we also heard of former leaders who were supposedly "born again of the wrong seed". As too your question i suppose that if they stood by what they originally taught that it doesnt make any difference whether we are here, reject their teaching, leave 'the household'or become criminal monsters. According to their formula we are "still going to heaven and all hell cant stop us". Its conveniently Wierwillian that way in that there is little about personal responsibility to be concerned with because the 'price has already been paid' and you are immediately declared to be 'righteous'. they had a whole other formula for being "in fellowship", which was not about eternal life but for stacking up eternal 'rewards' like so many bags of gold dubloons. I have no idea what the 'eternal rewards' actually got you other than some vague and unexplained 'crown'. To my knowledge it was never sufficiently explained aside--when you asked about cosmology i was thinking of something totally different than the way that this thread has developed. There was no real developed 'cosmology' in TWI (if I am understanding the word right) most teachings typically were focussed on the individual. Other than occasional references to the universe being surrounded by water(!) and a few other strange things (somebody else might be able to fill this in) as far as i remember it was never really laid out
