  1. A little bit of trivia that may win you an extra slice of pumpkin pie: Everybody knows Alice's was 'around the back', anybody want to venture a guess as to who occupied the front of the same building?
  2. Arlo does a 'Garbage Walk to Massacree HD' now too, from Alice's House (now the Guthrie Center) to the town dump, to the jail, to raise money for Huntingtons Disease.
  3. Only when the dumps open I dont want to get dragged away for litterin' which is still the biggest crime one can commit around here.
  4. I just rented a building next door to the original Alice's as my workshop last month--Funny how things work out. I have my own little slice of Americana now. If you find yourself in Stockbridge-- Walk right in Its around the back just a half a mile from the railroad track...
  5. If I were the commissioner I'd give him alot more than 10 games-- a year at least and maybe -just maybe let him back in. If athletes want to fight on the court/rink/field its bad enough but going into the stands after fans crosses an uncrossable line from being an on court idiot to committing criminal assault. The entire NBA is going to have to scramble now for damage control and they have lost alot because of this incident. It will be a long time before anyone views the NBA as 'family entertainment'. A huge black day for the NBA.
  6. Where's Simon? and Strange and the other baseball folk? and were did HillsBro go? I hope he's not choking somewhere on the curse of A-Rod.... ;)--> I just found this linkin a Dominican paper(hope it works) where the Godfather of Dominican baseball Juan Marichal has told Pedro to stay put in Boston or the Dominicans will hate him..... .... we'll see
  7. MEANWHILE BACK ON THE PEDRO WATCH: (from todays NYPost) Seems 72.3 percent of Yankee fans polled would rather live in hell than have Pedro in Stripes-- ...but they havent counted the electoral votes yet- Pedro wants four years, but at this point in his career, it would be a very risky use of capital. He has been fragile for quite afew years. Although still better than average he is not the pitcher that he once was. Still if he is to go, all i could do would be to say thanks for 7 of the best pitching years I have ever seen out of any pitcher. There are already eyes on Carl Pavano (interestingly enough the guy the Sox traded to get Pedro in the late 90's)who went 18-8 with about a 3.00 ERA for the Marlins. He has said he wants Schilling as a mentor and to come to the Sox. He visited the Schillings and had a powwow with Curt for several hours yesterday.
  8. :D--> :D--> :D--> :D--> Indeed it was
  9. The Cubs were in it in 'til what? The last week? Anything and I mean anything can happen in a week in baseball, or weren't you watching when The World Champion Boston Red Sox (Dam I still love to say that), were down 0-3 and down in the ninth inning of the fourth game against the best reliever in baseball just a few weeks ago? Its not lost until you play em--Anything can happen in baseball. Anything
  10. Steve! Its a little early to be giving up already isn't it? Spring training is still months away. Baseball, if nothing else, is about hope when there is no hope, at least try to last until June before you cash it in....anything can happen-- I'm waiting for the shortstop shuffle, this should be interesting, how many are free agents about 10 of 'em? Catchers too. The off seasons are almost as exciting as the seasons anymore (well not quite - but it builds anticipation)
  11. ...and personally i think the Yanks would be much better off if they got rid of Slappy... His teams only improve when he leaves....
  12. If the Steinbrenner wants to spend $60mil over 4 years for a good pitcher who is past his prime ( again), and lay out god knows how much for a .280 hitter-- more power to him. I would think by now he would have learned his lesson that all the money in the World can buy players but it cannot buy a T E A M. Thats the thing that works around these parts. ...WE INTERRUPT THIS POST TO BRING A MESSAGE TO ALL MLB FREE AGENTS CONSIDERING LEAVING OR COMING TO BOSTON Any Questions?
  13. How many days until spring training?? Im missing having no baseball to watch and my girlfriend is starting to look at me funny when I ask her who's pitchin' or try to talk free agents with her. Should be a good and interesting off season,(just waaaaay too long) with all the free agents on the market although I dont like to see any of my guys go..It will be interesting to see where they all land and if any of the teams are recognizable next year
  14. I remember that Billy Rohr game like it was yesterday, having become a huge fan in 1966. It was early April 67 and a cold day in Yankee Stadium, Tom Tresh lead off the ninth with a drive deep to left and Yastrzemski made probably the best catch I have ever seen, going straight back hard and diving for a ball directly over his head and coming down with the ball. It was electrifying saving what was up til that time was a no-hitter. Elston Howard got a hit to right with two out in the ninth to spoil it, but it pointed to something different happening that year from what had been a very lackluster period for the Red Sox. Were you there Eagle? I lived in Fenway it seemed that summer, bleacher seats were still $1.00, I had a paper route (and an older sister who in between boyfriend breakups would take me to games) I must've gone to 25 games that year. I loved that team with a passion what a great introduction to baseball for a 12 year old. That year reintroduced excitement and magic to the Red Sox who had been floundering for a generation. 67 in my opinion saved the franchise, in the early 60's they had been like the Expo's, I went to games where there were 4-5000 people and they regualrly finished last or near last. There was talk for awhile of moving the team. It all changed in 67 when baseball became real fun, people started to come to the park, and expected to win. it was disappointing to lose to Gibson in Game 7, but The Impossible Dream team lit a fire in New Englanders-- They've been winners more or less and a successful franchise ever since. Billy Rohr and the 67 Sox were the start of the 1967-2004 Era that transitioned the team. The 2004 team took the final step into a brand new Era, That other team from NY had their century, this century belongs to us ;)-->
  15. Great article raf-it points to the loyalty and type of people that the Red Sox draw--and as many people have told me in the last few weeks now that 'it' has finally happened many can die in peace. It still seems like a dream and I have rewatched the videos to make sure that it still happens, I find it difficult to keep the smile off my face these days and find myself singing or humming "Dirty Water" ( a great song about Boston that they play at Sox game) quite a few times a day. Im a newcomer compared to that lady only waiting since my first game ( a Yankee game by the way) in June of 66. Its sweet --real sweet, a giant weight has lifted - - no more taunts from Yankee fans, no more 1918 chants, no more reruns of Bucky Dents homerun, the ball going through Buckner's legs, Boggs crying in the dugout in 86, or feelings of impending doom during the playoffs. No more kicking, clawing and scratching for every last inch in the fight to gain respect., all replaced with a miracle of a comeback, day after day after day after day, with a new twist and a new turn and a new contributor every day. I hope someone with some ability records all the fine threads of the tapestry of this season that came together. Its pretty cool, families and friends have reunited around this and even in cemetaries around New England there are pennants waving with signs like-'They did it Daddy' As for me, it all went by in a blur and it will take me all winter for it to sink in I'm sure..by incredibly good luck I have gotten to lay my fingerprints on the World Series Trophy- which is something that I cant express in words...Its symbolic but Its a brand new way of looking at things, full of more possibility than I had ever envisioned... Ok enough of this self indulgent chatter..I need some baseball.....anybody got a winter league your following? who's pitchin' tonight?
  16. Hi Kids! My computer crashed worse than that team from New York..(whats their name?) ;)--> I havent been able to answer some great posts here, I'm at a breakfast place on my way to a parade that is expecting 5,000,000 ( thats FIVE MILLION!) other redeemed souls. I'll be back and have awhole winter to reflect on this with some of you ...
  17. Better get in line for tickets now, or hope that someone leaves them to you in their will, the Sox have sold out every game for ayear and a half, and about amillion people are going to want to be there to see the World Championship flag raised next April 11, what a day --and the Yankees will be in the third base dugout that day to boot. Sweet. Im workin on it-if you get the tix before me-sign me up! Anyone going to the parade and rally saturday?
  18. I almost forgot- thank you Yankees-- your century is over-this century is ours-- enjoy the curse of ARod! and Lets go Cubs! Next year I want the Cubs-Sox, earlier games, and a beer or 12 with Simon during the 7Th game at Fenway. and Damn--there is no game tonight :(--> , thats about the only hard part to deal with, do I have to go back to politics now? ug I think I'll vote for Terry Francona
  19. After last year when the Sox lost in extra innings of the seventh game to the Yankees, every Red Sox fan was hoping for this, but being Red Sox fans held within them that deep hidden inner dread that something again would go wrong. The management of the Red Sox was great, . Last Thanksgiving day the Sox signed Curt Schilling and immediately on Boston TV there was a truck commercial with Schilling hitchhiking from Arizona and getting picked up by a Ford Truck Q. Where Ya Goin man? A. Boston-I gotta go break an 86 year old curse It was hopeful but still in the it cant happen to us category, the powers of history were too strong. You are right Johniam the Red Sox were a team in disarry, they started quick, sweeping the Yankees in April, and moving in to firstbut by May and thru June and July played .500 and were 10 games out. Everyday the lineup was different and it was like a team without an identity., It looked like they wouldnt even make the playoffs. I think it ws a combination of a come from behind extra innind victory over the Yankees and the Nomar trade a week later that started to actually bring these guys together, and got them to play consistently to their potential, They won 10 in a row over strong teams and cut the lead to 2 1/2 and moved ahead in the wildcard race. Something, I dont know what, changed, I talked about it on the baseball thread with Simon, it really was a cool thing to watch when they as a group found themselves, their identity, and it became obvious that they were just enjoying themselves playing baseball. Theey really was an infectious enthusiasm."The Idiots" were born. Still a hundred times through the season I thought it was over, when they played crappy over labor day weekend, when Foulke was gettin shelled, when Millar couldnt buy a hit, and most especially after the first game against the Yankees when Schilling got shelled I was in disbelief. Curt was shown in the dugout near crying and what had started last Thanksgiving (I've come to break the curse) looked like another &^*%@$ heartbreak. When Pedro lost game two it looked like I had seen this movie once again and by the third game when they got hammered 19-8 and were down 3-0, I posted a tombstone on the other thread, and I had had enough I was ready to give up the Red Sox forever. Then I dont know what the F happened, it must've been a damn miracle, its been a surreal two weeks ---from Roberts stealing 2nd in the ninth inning of the fourth game and scoring the tying run against Rivera--to Ortiz extra inning game winning hits, to Schilling coming back after he should have been in surgery hobbling to the mound and bleeding out another win, to Derek Lowe, the paranoid Android, actually focussing and pitching the games of his life. Everybody on this team, and it definitely is 'a team' had that indefinable something, whatever you want to call it,spirit, heart, whatever-- that not only overcame insurmountable odds against the Yankees, the best team in baseball in the Cardinals, but 86 years of gloom and history. Its going to take me along time to sort all this out, but it is going to be nice next year raising the flag at Fenway next April 11 , people have lived and died waiting for this moment and I'm glad and thankful to be able to witness it. There are alot of lessons to be learned from this team, I have along way until the next game to let it all sink in. We're just a bunch of idiots, we just enjoy ourselves. We dont think too much about it, We just love baseball and go play. Manny Ramirez
  20. It works for me Geo, it definitely works for me, i was nervous and New England angst ridden enough, I'll take a victory over the curse that is DONE DONE DONE DONE DONE on an eclipsing red moon any day, 8 straight victories over the best teams in baseball?
