  1. Yea Happy Birthday!! enjoy that! I know things will change around ( I hope) but it cant all be Ortiz and Manny ( 25 game hitting streak)someone else has to do something once in awhile...I think I went through this about a month ago howit takes all 25, right now 2 cylinders are firing which aint doin it. Its low time---theres a lot of bailing to do to right this ship
  2. ugg-groan The Sox just got swept by the Royals (the %&$# Royals???) after having lost two to the DRays, and the toughest part of the schedule for the whole year is still coming Regroup now or they're done after these last few weeks I honestly think there is more of chance for peace in the middle east than the Sox being in the Series. but God Bless Yogi-i know I know NUTHIN, but the signs sure look bad
  3. Toward the end of my time the whole thing was a ritual every bit as predictable as the staunchest ritualistic Church a typical fellowship opening prayer 2 songs announcements ( leader promotes some way class or program) slow song prayer and manifestations brief exclamation of how great manifestations were Teaching on a subject that youve heard at least 52 million times before prayer for abundant sharing and abundant sharing song closing prayer 'refreshments' 1/2 hour of 'fellowship' I may be forgetting something(thank God!) but the order of the fellowship usually only varied slightly. of course there were hundreds of rituals within this ritual.
  4. I dont know... In my very first game at Fenway, Pepitone caught the last out at first and like alot of kids those days i was scrambling near the dugout with my handout asking for the ball as he ran in. He handed the ball to a 20 something blonde with a huge beehive hairdo (..think Marge Simpson) and way too much makeup who quietly locked it in her purse. Joes hair was equally coiffed in the poofystyle of the day-- sort of like a manicured lawn with no hair out of place despite having just played 9 innings--, I think his claim to fame was to be the first major leaguer to bring a hairdryer into the clubhouse. Mantle hit 2 HR's in that game, which was legendary enough for a 10 year old, Bobby Richardson went 5 for 5, but its Pepitone that stands out most clearly of all the events of that game
  5. eww (remembrances of yoohoo -swirling through my memory), although I would like to see those old B&W commercials (didnt Mantle have a Lucky Strike commercial or something like that?) ummmm.thats a goood smoke....) That mustve been something to see Yogi play, Ive always been drawn to the characters myself that seem so much more human and real which probably explains a good part of my appreciation of Manny Ramirez. Unfortunately he doesnt speak very much, at least not in the public eye, but when he does he is Manny being Manny every bit as much as Yogi is Yogi, and you usually leave howling in laughter , spitting out your drink or with an "did I just really hear that?" expression on your face that can keep you going for days. Hopefully somebody, somewhere is writing it down so someday we can have a book of Manny being Manny. I really like the one of a kinds
  6. Yogi was dressed in a white suit on a hot summers day and the mayors wife said 'You look cool Yogi" to which he replied" You dont look so hot yourself" Gotta Love Yogi. I'd like to see some footage of him playing-He was/is on the All-Century team- It seems like the only footage I ever see of him is either the ball sailing over his head on the Mazeroski HR, him going nuts after Jackie Robinson stole home, or running to hug Don Larsen after the final out. Im surprised there isnt a documentary on Yogi the ballplayer---who Stengal said was the one guy he had to have in his lineup everyday during those great years. Can you imagine the conversations Casey and Yogi must have had? Now that would be a book...
  7. God Bless Yogi Do you guys have the Yogi AFLAC commercial in your parts of the country? here it comes on everyday in the 7th inning-although I know it by heart its still a welcome part of everyday life- I think one of my favorite Yogi quotes is 'I didnt really say, everything I really said"
  8. Thank You Mr Strange, that was interesting. I know that there is alot more gamesmanship in the waiver wire than I am aware of, that spelled out alittle more for me... enjoy the moment!! We have the opposite --The Sox are in a cold streak and people are jumping on the gloom and doom bandwagon, and getting ready to get the snowshovels out for a long cold winter already..... but we'll see what October brings when October comes
  9. We like to (erroneously most of the time) think so, but I think we are more the center of the money that pushes the media and are just generally louder and more obnoxious with our demands than other parts of the country Like a lot of the media I think they go with the easy and sure paycheck instead of the story that really is shouting to be told. They'll catch on after everybody gets it anyway. It is an amazing story, didnt they only win about 70 all last year?

    OOPS

Oops-maybe you should have filled the holes with ductape! I was a roofer for awhile in my 20's and got a work order from my boss to reroof a house at 64 Soandso Street, so me and a work crew went out to the house, set up and started ripping the roof off of the house. We were doing pretty good and had it mostly all off to bare wood and the yard mostly cleaned up when the home owner came home and went ballistic. Seems the street number on the work order was wrong and we had taken the roof off of the wrong house. Oops
  11. Ouch 4 in the 8th? I checked the box and see that your guys finally won in the 12th,which is good but I hate getting a good start and having the middle guys collapse. Thanks for the education on waivers---Theo must have read them yesterday--He picked up Javy Lopez form the O's to replace Varitek. Since we need a lefty in the pen and already have a Javier Lopez in AAA. I could be looking forward to a Javier Lopez-Javier Lopez battery. Aside from the excitement of 3 walkoffs in 5 days the Sox have been flat -way too flat (3-4 homestand that couldve been 0-7), Varitek, Wakefield, Nixon all joined the DL with Clement and Foulke(Thats about $30Million worth of players) Lowell who has been a gold glover at third might be going too, hes hobbling around like an old man after fouling balls off his instep on 3 consecutive games. Francona has been patching together a pitching staff and even the reliable Schilling and Beckett have had bad outings. They have about a week and a half to get their sh!t together as the years real make or break part of the schedule is coming up then. Meanwhile the Yankees have been hot and moved into first
  12. Waivers still confuse me after all these years, I think that there are enough loopholes to pretty much get someone where they want to be if they work at it, at least it seems to happen.... I'd like to get one of those "Waivers for the compleat idiot" books. Another day, another come from behind walkoff win in the bottom of the ninth(Loretta this time). I'd sort of prefer middle relief holds, but this run is pretty cool
  13. HERE'S an Ortiz thread from my other board of Red Sox cultists If they to pitch to Manny, he just may make an assault on Hack Wilson, He had 165 RBI in 147 games one year, and also loves to hit in the clutch. Its the two of them that work together Ortiz is in the same league with the years of watching Larry Bird, Bobby Orr, Tom Brady and Bill Russell. Years from now, people will hear what he did, find it hard to believe, and think that it is some embellished legend, but it is really happening. I am awed to be able to see this over a period of time. I hope nobody has a stick up their butt about the DH when they vote for MVP. ..... .... ..... .... ... .. ..... ...... ....... ....... ..... ........ ... ...... ..... .. . ... .. .. ... The bad news is Varitek, the anchor of everything, is out 4-6 weeks and the pitching has been pretty bad so this isnt going to be easy the rest of the way
  14. Heres a postscript to my gushing about Ortiz, that a stathead forwarded to me. He DOES do it all the time, these are the stats for when he has come up in walkoff situations since the end of 2004 2004 PostSeason: 3-for-5, 2 HR, 5 RBI, BB 2005: 3-for-3, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 2 BB 2006: 5-for-6, 3 HR, 10 RBI, 2 BB Since the end of the 2004 regular season, Ortiz has come to the plate in a walk-off situations 19 times -- and reached base 16 times. He is 11-for-14 (.786), with 7 HR and 20 RBI. In 2005 and 2006, he is 8-for-9, with 5 HR and 15 RBI mercy
  15. I Just love watching them hit. Some guys (Yastrzemski comes to mind) are all stress and strain in the box--Manny and Papi look as relaxed as if they just got out of bed---its allnatural to them....I feel very fortunate to see them everyday.............. There has been a move to get Rice in the Hall, petitions, letters , all that sort of stuff and he should be, He was one of the most feared hitters of his time. There are alot of names out that should be in- I still cant believe that Ron Santo isnt in either
  16. 9 Walkoff Hr's , 17 walkoff hits in 3 years These are sweet years worth savoring.I never saw Ruth-Gehrig (obviously)but these two are the most formidable RBI duo that I have ever seen. The statheads around here are doing comparisons to the Ted Williams-Jimmy Foxx years and Papi and Manny are coming out on top. They do every once in awhile, which really isnt any better for them..Manny is an RBI machine.....before Ortiz got here I saw Manny get walked a few times with the bases loaded as well as with the bases empty (in a tie game!) just not to have to pitch to him----He also is that good. They are just so matter of fact about it, it makes me forget all the years of torture and inept lineups that I suffered through
  17. Unbelievable!--Another Walkoff, 3 run HR by Ortiz in the bottom of the ninth--- How many walkoffs can one guy hit?
  18. Well looks like we are pretty much standing pat. I just watched an interview with Theo Epstein and he said that they wanted to add to the major league roster and had several things in the works but the asking price was way too high and that they were not willing to sacrifice the teams long term goals. Which strikes me as sound. The development system is excellent and there are some great prospects, especially pitchers, that I'd hate to see go too easily. Ive seen that way too many times before (prospect Jeff Bagwell to Houston for the immortal Larry Anderson comes to mind....)
  19. I have 4:08 so's I guess all the frantic moving is over now, I just got in and I still havent heard much of anything--I cant get into my regular sites that are all jammed up, and ESPN has got the NFL Today on ( Wha???). Im guessing nothing huge moved around. Wells record looks bad but apparently he has pitched well for the last two months, so he might be ahelp for your guys, have no idea what Stairs is up to, but have always liked him..... Guess Im going to have to wait for the news,
  20. Yea it moved north, I dont know who is on the field tonight, they vaguely look like the same guys, but its not the Red Sox, Schilling has been replaced by some clone who is not him. down 6-1 in the third. I just looked at Mendoza's stats 1-5 6.38 in AA, He was a huge prospect and signed at 16, then has sort of bogged in and around A Ball for the last 6 years. Corey's only pitched 22 innings in his career but is .147 against lefties, so Im assuming that is where he is going. He'll be the get one lefty out in a pinch guy. I dont know where everyone else is, maybe they are sick of me playing amateur GM, or hopefully they are actually at the park mombak

  22. It looks like a typical "Yankee" type acquisition, Abreau's numbers are sliding down for awhile and he still holds a big contract, but he is a big name which Geo. likes, The short porch might help Abreau. plus they get to upgrade their number five starter all without giving up anyone on their major league roster. In the division that may come down to two or three games, its a good (but expensive) add. What do you know about Bryan Corey? Looks like he's going to be our get one lefty out guy... Schillings struggling so far......
  23. WOW! That sounds like a great game! 72-68 Great googly moogly 8 TD passes, without your leading rusher in the game? Sounds like one heckuva a game to me... congrats-enjoy the moment
  24. I'd love to sit in with a GM this time of the year, just to watch the poker games that are going on between them , and to see up close the games that are being played behind the game. Its an intriguing, whole other part of the game, thats not as easy to see, but effects teams just as much You have to wonder how many of the rumors are planted, how many are real, and how many GM's are going in the opposite direction of what they are projecting waiting for their opening. Im guessing most of them Every year rumors fly as some sort of smokescreen, but hardly any of them are accurate.. The next 25 hours could have a few surprises Good Luck!
  25. who would they trade for Tejada and where would they put him once they got him? Move Young back to second? Put Tejada on 3rd or DH? Makes for interesting scenarios Maybe..its not for some players, Renteria looked like hell here last year, but he seems to do better other places. Some players thrive in the atmosphere (Like Schilling) and some wilt. I'd give guys time to adjust -but its almost August and there is a pennant race on, how much time do you give him? He misreads a lot of balls hit to him, regularly breaking the wrong way and doesnt have a great arm in center. Saturday he airmailed the cutoff man (which is one sure way to get under my skin) which led to a 5 run inning for the Angels, besides he is only hitting in the .260's. Yea we're a tough crowd here in New England, I know, but having a leadoff type hitter who doesnt get on and a centerfielder with limited range and a fair arm at best-whats the point? He will develop into a above average player someday but may be a better fit somewhere else, I dont know if he is going to be the CF'er for the future that was originally hoped...maybe, but there is a way to go to get there. Its a weird thing this time of year weighing your present needs and finding the balance with your future goals ........ Well we got past Jered Weaver yesterday (tough kid), and have Schilling going tonight which, especially at home, is always optimistic. I'll be doing my part in front of the boob tube for you. You might get it --its the ESPN sunday night game.
