For Whatever Its Worth To me the reverable number, and the one that I still think of is 714, When Ruth surpassed the existing record in 1921 the record for career HR's was 138, which total he eventually more than quintupled. Which in any sport is incomprehensibly staggering. HE is the one who completely changed and almost singlehandedly saved the game, Players have been chasing him for 70 years, some get close and two have now surpassed him by a few, but nobody has come close to impacting or changing the nature of the game like he did. Nobody has dominated like he has and until someone someday comes along and hits 3500 nobody will

yea-- chicks dig the long ball--I do too, Ive seen my share of monster shots, but Id just as soon see the tying run thrown out at the plate, a reliever come in and induce a clutch douple play, a well executed hit and run, a great catch, or a pitcher who really works a great game HR's are a part of the game, but just a part, I dont see them as a be all end all. Mays in his day was as exciting in the field and on the basepaths as any of his HR's and was a complete player. Jeter is a great player but he will be remembered because he won championships as part of a team effort moreso than for his individual achievements. Players like that imho deserve to be honored and recognized more than the individual numbers that really dont necessarily do much but provide personal glory. Yea ARod will probably have 800HR's when he is done. Im not slighting it. It is very impressive. How many teams will he have lead to the World Series Title? Didnt Seattle and Texas actually improve after he left? Some very talented and highly favoured Yankee teams havent won anything while he has been there either... Individual achievements are OK, but they should be subjugated to the good of the team. Give me a Bill Russell over a Wilt Chamberlain anyday. Yea Chamberlain scored 100 in a game, averaged 50/game and got all the accolades, meanwhile Russell won 11 championships. He had a greater game than Chamberlain because he knew the secret to make his team click. Unfortunately there is not yet a statistic for that

Yeah well---good for him I guess, its an individual achievement in a team sport. Honestly im much more impressed with Tom Glavine getting his 300th win-- especially in this day and age. 5 man rotations, 100 pitch-pitch counts, relief specialists, all work against piling up 20 win seasons--plus WINS are accomplishments that actually matter. Its likely that we could see Manny Ramirez, Jim Thome, Gary Sheffield and maybe even Carlos Delgado all pass 500HR's relatively soon. What used to be rare and special is now commonplace--but It may be a very very long time before anyone else gets to 300 Wins again. IMO Glavine and his accomplishment has been something that has been overlooked and passed by too quickly with all the Bonds hysteria going on. Yes Bonds is historic to watch-but last I checked the Giants were in last place. Whats the point in that?

Yes and Poco, now thats a strange pairing I think the oddest double bill I ever saw was The Mahavishnu Orchestra and The J. Geils Band in the early 70's. The crowd was a mixture of the ethereal Buddhist meditator types and colors flying rowdy bikers .... ...I dont know about the capes--could be some super hero thing

This wont be for everybody. The marijuana thread got me thinking of some things that I havent listened to in quite awhile the audio quality isnt that great, but this is what I was listening to 35 summers ago. ...... I dont know how I listened to something of this intensity nearly everyday, but I did, and to me it seemed like magic The first song unfortunately is broken up into two parts Part 1 Part 2

I noticed him pitching righty and thought ( duh!), knocking forearms after he got to the plate didnt seem to be in before the late 90's either, Old Fenway looked good though. For a first effort its pretty good I suppose even though I have no interest in those video games. If his goal of the entire 1912 season does come about, it might be fun to watch some winter.. The yankees are only 6 out in the loss column, so they definitely arent out of it yet. I havent taken a chance to compare the schedules yet, I think that there may be some surprises come the deadline. Cubbies are lookin good, this season is moving too fast....

Anything good happening out there? Ive been hanging with 90 year old Dad, and spending my evenings caring for his wife in the Alzheimers Unit, which is much more exciting than watching the Red Sox right now, who have been playing at .500 since June 1st. Hopefully the trading deadline will fill a few gaps and add a new jolt of excitement. I did run into one guy who wants to recreate the entire 1912 season to watch, and other moments of importance before video and film was in use. Heres his take on Ruths last HR as a member of the Red Sox at Fenway in 1919

Try it in off tourist season sometime if you have the chance. Of course i love summers at the beach, but the winter storms coming in over the New Hampshire coast are actually even more unforgettable

Massachusetts, where I live, has laws against toxic waste, I hired specialists to safely remove them without causing contamination to other individuals, polluting the environment, or possibly causing an outbreak of wierwillism in any other community... naaa After a few moves they dwindled and went somewhere, there are still a few falling apart copies of some books hanging around just because I am sort of pack rattish . I havent opened them up in years. I would feel funny taking money for them, I would give them away if for some reason someone really really wanted them, but they would have to listen to my complaints and warnings about them first. I would donate them to a Cult Museum or a Museum of Mans Folly if someone opens one Eventually i'll toss the remainder out

Ive been gone for about a week and just saw this thread so I havent read all the responses. I personally think there is a line between Marijuana use and Marijuana abuse that gets crossed way too often. at least in our culture. There is no doubt in my mind that it is a very powerful herb that has a lot of positive possibiliies but its abuse only for inebriation and dulling of the senses is unfortuantely way too common. In some cultures, particularly native cultures, it is administered as a sacred herb by elders and medicine men, who guide users into understanding how it works beneficially. Most of us have received no such instruction--at least i know that i havent-- so mostly it remains a mystery to me. I believe it has the capability to open windows of awareness and doors of perception that are generally closed out by everyday stresses, and can in the right circumstances enhance creativity, (American jazz famously developed and took leaps forward from 'reefer' Native shamans, and medicine men go further and write of it as a tool to experince visions, dreams, insights, spirit travel I have nothing against it, but if (big if-for me it is extremely rare) I partake I am very careful--no pressing business to tend to of any great importance for at least a day, no driving--things like that. I realize that it is a very powerful herb But I have to say I do enjoy it when it does happen-usually only a toke and the colors get brighter and crisper, music and sounds get infinitely more interesting, ideas, concepts and sensations that have been hiding in the shadows come to the foreground. Stress relief is near immediate. I now know (as opposed to when I was much younger) know when to stop, and still then make it a very rare and special thing. I think it should be studied. There is doubt in my mind that it has immense power but so far, at least in our culture, it seems it has never really been understaood and rarely used in what could be very beneficial ways. Older cultures that have had it for 1000's of years seem to have somewhat of a better grasp on its use and benefits--we could learn alot from them

Some are, of the ones that I have read most arent but consider it a time of transition and change as it is the end of a cycle and beginning of another

I'll try to catch that. Being not that far from NYC, I still occasionally run into old timers that are pi$$ed that Da Bums moved. It was then, and still is now to some, unthinkable that they would up and leave....should be a good show... ...It was a real eye opener for me watching that 1967 DVD, I found it very hard watching the regular game last night, after watching the 67 game. As much as I have learned to like Don Orsillo and Jerry Remy (Sox TV announcers) I just wanted them to shut up. All the graphics, advertisements, and 'noise' (and NESN isn't as bad as most stations) detract immensely from the simplicity and beauty of the game. Maybe fans will generate enough 'noise' after seeing this broadcast that present day announcers will learn something from their simpler and perhaps wiser predecessors. Ive written them and let them know.... Im outta here to take care of dear old dad for a few weeks---hold the fort
