I Never left the Yankees up for dead, we had that conversation back in May/June, and (I think) afew times since, unless the lead is 163 games Ive learned better.....at this point Id almost give the Red Sox up for dead though--they best snap to soon or I wont give them much hope to go to far. They have been playing slop and coast for much too long ...... Gagne blew his fifth game in little more than a month last night, bringing him in high contention for the worst trading deadline acquisition in RedSox history. He may have done well to retire and protect his 'legacy' before he becomes remembered for something totally different. .... I saw a good flick today on Bill"Spaceman" Lee Spaceman-A Baseball Odyssey who, although he was blackballed from MLB, never quit on baseball and is still pitching at 58. Its a good mix of interesting ideas and genuine love of the game Its available through Netflix.. .... Clay Buchholz the no hit kid gets his first start since his no-no tonight-hopefully he'll snap some life back into this somnambulent team

I dont like any sort of meaningless phrase that is just filler so people dont actually have to think about what they are saying for those few seconds. Thats a good example of one that generally makes no sense whatsoever

not quite as classy as having to line the field with riot police so the Red Sox could escape alive after a win---Now that was classy!, dodging those batteries, cherry bombs, and other projectiles was an adventure in genuine metropolitan sophistication, and a lesson in the true giving "Spirit Of New York". They are such good sports! There is nothing quite like having to be escorted around by stormtroopers to make you feel all warm and fuzzy about a city, a team, and its fans---and all those free batteries! what an extra treat! A real world class city of classy classness Yup, Boston hasnt caught up yet, all it has is one lone streaker--but hey we try!

No just another example of the 'class act' that is the New York Tankees. I dont know who started that rumor ( a Madison Ave PR firm?) but they certainly have gotten a lot of miles out of it over the decades... Classic game, baseball doesnt get much better than Rivera vs Ortiz with runners on and 2 outs in the the ninth. I have no complaints, (well...some managerial decisions I do and the announcing of ESPN --aye yi yi ) all that I was wanting in this circumstance was one out of the three game series anyway, and I got that. ..If NYs miracle comeback of Friday doesnt happen its 2 of 3, Take away Schillings one hanging splitter to Jeter in the 8th last night, which Jeter homered on ( which was a classic battle btw) and its a sweep, then the Yankees could have battled the last few weeks with the Tigers for the wildcard. Thats pretty much probably not gonna happen Now, I doubt it will exactly go to the wire but there will be alot of jockeying for position, especially with the new playoff formats Good baseball no matter how you watch it.

This could make for an interesting situation at the eaglehouse come playoff time! as it could be Sox/Indians in the ALDS... Id be curious what you'd wager with Mrs. Eagle ... and also welcome aboard Per ... Go Sox--Win It ForTHIS KID

was that in their Washington days? I was big Frank Howard fan, some of the hardest balls I have ever seen hit were by him. Im sort of curious of you two: Tom in Texas and Hiway in LA both are sort of far away--How many of these Red Sox or Yankee fans do can you know out there? Where I am, I am surrounded, everybody, and I mean everybody, is either one or the other to some degree or another-- there is no getting around it. 24/7/365. Msaybe it looks the same from 3000 miles away...There is a huge difference around here ..I havent had beer thrown on me, been mugged, or had my tires slashed by RedSox fans, nor have I ever been in fear at Fenway Park ....ever....(All of which has happened to me at Yankee Stadium). 'Friendly' Fenway is almost a family carnival atmosphere, where you can feel totally safe bringing an army of three year olds. During trips to the Bronx I feel at least once a game that i am taking my life into my hands. I havent been ripped off in business by RedSox fans, I have by Yankee fans. I can enjoy myself with Sox fans. Inside or outside of baseball, I have to keep an eye open when i am around Yankee fans. With the Yankee fans I know (especially up close) there is almost constantly some attack, if not overt, then subtle, some maneuvering for position or an underlying snooty attitude that they know more about just about anything than you could ever possibly know. Not all of them-but it is the flavor of the city that thinks of itself as (GAG ME) "The greatest city in the world" PULEEESE Both the RedSox and Yankee fans are loud.. will buy up seats that locals wont buy, and will say (or most likely yell) pretty much what is on their minds. Thats just the way baseball has always been.. They both love their teams and will cheer then until the end but to me the comparison ends there. The underlying philosophical differences between the two cities is not nearly as close as it looks from thousands of miles away.

did you ever hear wierwille speaking in tongues and/or interpret ?
mstar1 replied to excathedra's topic in About The Way
It sure mustve been remarkable  In the OT when "God spoke" via prophecy people had no problem remembering it for 30 , 40 or 50 years before they wrote it down down. If it was that absolutely forgettable to you, i certainly wouldnt put it in the category of remarkable. and No Mike I dont remember what I had for breakfast on a specific day in 1977, but I do remember words spoken to me, conversations, and things I heard that I deemed important, Most of them looking back werent even all that 'remarkable' yet I remember them clearly. If I believed that "God Spoke" to me a 'remarkable' message-- believe me , I would make a special memory folder for that one. -

Well....keep us in suspense no longer .. what exactly was the 'gist' that was so superb? -
Of course not--Thats in San Diego! Its a sport, a game, people should have the rght to cheer for who they want to cheer for, and support who they want to support without someone getting in a twist about it,

Im finally home.. HERE"S something hiway may appreciate I said earlier in the year how it is easier and cheaper to drive the eight hours to Baltimore to watch the Red Sox play. All year Red Sox fans have outnumbered O's fans at Camden Yards, which has po'ed the O's to no end. Last night the local stations in Baltimore heavily promoted a 'Take back the Yard" night when they arrived They were greeted by a giant banner that read "Fenway South Welcomes O's Fans" I thought it was hilarious, some people in baltimore no doubt think its obnoxious, but no one got hurt Not all that many baseball teams have fans that will drive 8 hours to see them play, some will, but 2/3rds of a big league stadium? with regularity? Or filling Seattle or San Diego, or Toronto? It will die down someday, but right now it is some sort of strange phenomena that people are ether swept up in or apparently repulsed by.. Its just...baseball :)

Steinbrenner may be part of it but I dont think he is the whole thing. Part of it for me is the NY cocksure attitude that they should win, deserve to win and are somehow better than people/teams from other places, that they really dont have to respect or take too seriously. They'll put up with other places but There is a general condescension that can permeate through NY when it when it compares itself with other cities or teams which I never understood but is tangible and real, The arrogance of the place/team/fans annoys me.

everything? I suppose you would have to ask people why exactly they hate the Yankees ( although the word used was 'dislike') if you are going to draw a parallel. Is spending money the main reason people dislike the Yankees? Partly , but I dont think that it is the only reason, or maybe even the top reason. If money is the sole reason then the Red Sox would be second in the race but somehow they are popular nationally and actually manage to make following baseball fun and enjoyable to a huge amount of people. I suspect that there actually may be more to the reason that people dislike the Yankees than their financials
-
Idbe curious if its the Yankees, in some spheres they are the universal team to dislike, of course I really have no way of knowing. I am outside of Cleveland today and was pleasantly surprised last night when I went into the sports bar in the middle of Ohio, to see the TVs not tuned to the Indians or Tigers but a Boston feed of the Red Sox. In Ohio? Absolutely nothing on the Indians or Tigers.....Odd... but good... I felt right at home. Even 700 miles from home...The owners are definitely good at marketing -

Having been through a fairly similar situation and having to take off months this summer from work (and summering) to straighten out the completely lackadasiacal medical care given my father, I realize that the sum of the post is all too real and common. Most elder care doctors that I have met this year have the ethical substance of a slug and are about as responsible as crack addicts unless their feet ( and sometimes their heads) are firmly and persistently held to the fire. Thankfully,(and thank God I have a family that is willing to educate themselves and stay highly involved) it has been straightened out after some very narrow and very unnecessary near misses. I just got back from his house. PapaMstar turned 90 today and is doing great, but it wasnt without some great efforts along the way fighting the system

I think I am in total agreement. I think govt needs to control reincarnation. Absolutely. Cant have a bunch of undocumented reincarnates running around. Resurrection, too. There should be paperwork, lots of paperwork before passing through the gates of death. Paid for in advance, like social security or medicare that is taken out of our paychecks. New Life taxes. And signage directing the traffic into the appropriate ethereal realms too. It would make death so much more manageable. I'm all for it. Come to think of it I may go to China just to get my reincarnation license, or if TL is gonna sell blackmarket permits I'll get that as long as its passable, looks legit and wont get me back as a sea slug or a brussel sprout

I wasnt exactly sure where to post this: The silly forum seemed right By Matthew Philips Newsweek Aug. 20-27, 2007 issue - In one of history's more absurd acts of totalitarianism, China has banned Buddhist monks in Tibet from reincarnating without government permission. According to a statement issued by the State Administration for Religious Affairs, the law, which goes into effect next month and strictly stipulates the procedures by which one is to reincarnate, is "an important move to institutionalize management of reincarnation." LINK Also HERE is some thrilling archealogical news

Bread and Puppet still does! They have been doing "street art"for about 45 years now. It is like nothing else I have everseen. Anywhere. If they are near your area, I highly suggest putting it on your calendar, they are a very rare, memorable and alterring experience. If not, it is worth the effort to go to their home base which is a large beautiful farm in the hills of the "Northeast Kingdom" oif Vermont (one of my favorite places on this earth).

Ive never been so I cant really give it a real review. I have met a number of people who have gone, (usually from the artsy, hippie, a little (or way out) on the fringes crowd) for who it is an event they either went to experience once or in some cases a few times...They all generally have good things to say about it, . I think I understand the annual festival thing, I go through phases. In the 90's I went to the Bread and Puppet Theater in Vermont about 3 times, which was more or less guerilla theater on a grand scale for a long summers weekend. For about the last 7 years I go to Folk Festival that is right nearby, if I feel the need to get away and have a sense of a larger community. Ive been three or four times but I can come home whenever I want over the weekend and sleep in my own bed, and just do the highlights since it is 20 minutes away As I get older I find Im getting more sedate. Its interesting being exposed to new ideas in a creative environment and walking barefoot in the mud, but Im also liking a shower, an airconditioned room, and peace and comfort at the end of the day more and more. I don't know if you will find that in the middle of the Nevada desert If you go, let us know, give us the review

and Lo it starts again You know the drill. You should know it anyway. We go through the thing 18 times a year. Blackout. Cue Dramatic music. Maybe “Mars” from Gustav Holst’s Planet’s Suite. (Note: If you don’t know it, think of the Imperial March from the Star Wars movies. Pretty much everything in the first trilogy is John Williams ripping off Holst.) Cue images. Cue voice over. “Since the dawn of time, conflict has wrought mankind. Great rivalries of tribes of empires and of men. From the battles of ancient Greece, to the warriors of squared circle, battles have been fought, desperate struggles waged to establish supremacy. Athens vs. Sparta Ali vs. Frazier Russell vs Chamberlain Bird vs Magic Kobayashi vs Chestnut Yankees vs Red Sox Tonight, the battle is rejoined in the most fearsome gladiatorial arena in the darkest corner of Hades as the Red Sox and the Yankees-- Cut. CUT!!!! WAIT A MINUTE!!!!! Stop everything. Stop the music. Something’s not right here. Let’s see the music’s pretty dark and tense. That’s good. The pictures capture the moment pretty well. So what is it? What is it that doesn’t feel right? Wait. Could it be? I think I got it. The analogy isn’t right. This isn’t a struggle to the death between two evenly matched foes. What was I thinking? Let’s try a different cut. Blackout. Cue “Sunshine Day” by the Brady Bunch. Cue voice over. In sports as in the wild there are both predator and prey, an uneven match up with inevitably uneven results. From the tiger consuming the gazelle, to the anteater slurping down ants to the lion eating the lion tamer, some contests are inherently and biologically uneven. U.S. vs. Grenada Kobayashi vs Nichole Ritchie Red Sox vs Yankees Tonight the hunt is on, as the Red Sox methodically and inevitably dismantle the New York Yankees. There thats better!-I knew Id get it! Finish em off---Its Time for a sweep !!!

LOL on the Grady comment... amazing that Wells is still at it , what is he about 44? Glad to hear that he pitched well, he can add a lot to a team if he can stay out of bar fights, and abstain from pixxing off the commissioner, both of which he seemed to do with regularity when he was in Boston... As far as TB, Toronto, Baltimore-----Y' know it wasnt that long ago that the Red Sox were in the same fix. It was the new owners who turned things around by not only having good baseball minds, but also a very keen business sense that made them what they are today after about a million years of going nowhere. The RedSox had some good players, the samllest stadium in the majors, history, and were perpetual also rans. They did have a loyal fan base which was lsitened to and expanded, but it was the very sharp group of owners who made it happen. They can at times be as interesting to watch as the game on the field I dunno --after watching how these guys operate I am of the opinion that it could be done anywhere, not saying it will but it could be if the owners were sharp and concerned enough to do it

Well whats happening in here? ..looks like Bonds has faded back into insignificance-havent heard anything in weeks--thank God we passed that... Red Sox bats finally seem to be coming alive having swept the ChiSox 11-3 10-1 14-2 and 11-1 over the weekend. Four straight games in double figures doesnt happen everyday. The O and the pitching is all finally starting to click together, its good to see them finally playing like they can...just in time for the Yankee series which starts on Tuesday...huge screens are being set up for the series in public places you wouldnt expect (Libraries, parks) around here... and just curious--I havent been watching that closely but was there any correlation between Johnson going on the DL and the DBacks starting to click?--It just dawned on me when he left-I slowly started to hear alot more about them. Im not much on prima donnas chasing records
