Interesting George. I've been reading about the benefits of bear spay, which some campers/hunters swear by more than a rifle. They tell stories of shooting a bear only to make it madder, but bear spray seems to do the trick. I'm even thinking of getting a cannister to keep at home. Isn't that what Dog the Bounty hunter used? Those mega giant cans of mace?

Interesting WG thanks for the input! :)

Thank you so much for the great replies, I am still going over them reading them more thoroughly. Where do I start. First of all, Templelady, I just got grizzly maze, and i just started skimming through it. Looks like a great book. Thanks for the differentiations(sp?) I'm also reading Treadwells own book he wrote himself, and another one about his death by Nick Jans. Wow. Mind blowing stuff. dmiller: That link to that story is great stuff. Incredibly sad on so many levels. Incredibly igorant for people who "live with bears" to have this kind of mentality. "But the township, where some residents have fed bears for decades, just last week adopted a 17-page plan called "Living with Bears ... Coexisting with Wildlife in a Natural Setting." "Personally, I think it's premature to kill the bear," Humay said. "A number of people are convinced this is not an aggressive animal. It hasn't done anything to merit destruction." What? They are giving that bear a death sentence as well as some unlucky resident. And ironically, the "bear expert" Lynn Rogers, is considered to be an incredible fool by his own peers. I actually found him mentioned in Grizzly Maze. He feeds the damn bears! Here is an excerpt of what the Center of Wildlife Information thinks of Lynn Rogers. "Such actions, feeding approaching, following, have led to the destruction of thousands of wild animals. They are also the leading cause of human-bear confrontations resulting in serious injury and death to people and wild animals." Thanks for all this great stuff guys, and I'm interested in the difference between the types of bears too. Interesting stuff.

I think most people would agree with your assesment of Treadwell rascal. ;) Although it's still a horrible way to die it's a damn shame he had to give his girlfriend and those bears a death sentence as well. I have read that the bears can be scared off by yelling, before they go into attack mode of course, but damn, to think of being that close to one... Anyway I still need my question answered as to what the protocol is for killing a bear rather than relocating it. I'm really confused.

I am doing an assignment for a class I'm taking and I need to know something about bears. I'm getting conflicting messages from various sources I'm reading. It seems that the places where there are bears, in National Parks, there is a certain "bear awareness" that people must learn in order to enjoy them, and for the bears and peoples protection. My question is this. When are bears deemed to be too dangerous around people? I am reading that bears have a natural wariness around people we must respect and once they cross those lines (Mostly due to human ignorance and error) they become a danger to people. I am reading stories of bears that have become too acclimated to human food (people feeding them, leaving open food around) and are roaming campsites, then they are shot because now they can't be trusted around people and campsites. Why are they not relocated? I also read a story of a bear that killed a photographer who got to close to the sow and her cubs, and they decided not to kill the bear because she was acting in defense of her cubs and she did not feed off of his body. But I also read that once a bear kills a human (feeding off the remains or not) it cannot be trusted around humans again. Of course, it seems most of this is because of human error (as usual) and people crowding the bears, (or trying to be friends with them) but I'm wondering exactly what the protocol is and when do they relocate instead of killing the bear? Also Johnny, are there poachers in Alaska? It seems Treadwell deemed himself the savior of bears to keep them from the evil poachers, something the NPS in Alaska was quite offended by, but whose to say there weren't trophy hunters hunting illegally?

Thanks for answering Johnny. I'm going to show my Mom that map. Her and my dad traveled extensively in Alaska in the 80s and loved it. Sounds a bit too rugged for me though.
-
PS Johnny if you read this. What part of Alaska are you from? My Mom wants to know. ;)

Love the tunes. One tune that I don't think got into the movie was "we beseech thee" youtube it, it's great.
-
Johnny, Thank you so much again, as I'm writing this, I'm calling my Mom over to read it. This is facinating.

He wasn't eaten he starved to death. I really really would like Lingo man's take on this one.
-
Just bought Godspell the movie with Victor Garber as Jesus. Anyone remember this movie?
-
I just learned of this story recently, I know this was a recent movie. I wonder what Johnny Lingo's take on this guy would be?
-
Thanks for the reply Johnny that has been very helpful. And I'm actually doing an assignment on Treadwell which is why I needed the clarification on grizzly and brown bears. You are right about there being more than one school of thought, there are some people who swear that Treadwell's grizzes were brown bears and not grizzly bears and it gets very confusing. So the info you gave me helps greatly.
-
So how is this guy doing now psychologically I wonder? I ask that because, and I'm only speaking for myself, I don't know that I would want a doctor to save me if I were that badly damaged. Of course, people who usually have a strong, posotive outlook on life before something like this happens are the ones who can recover such tragedies. Summer of 2003, just later that October another Alaskan bear would kill Timothy Treadwell and his companion. Of course, Treadwell is a whole different story. Is there a difference between an Alaskan Brown bear and a grizzly? I'm doing a little bear research for an assignment on a class I"m taking and I can't seem to find a consistant answer to that.

I'm tired of being nice. It makes me sick. People who think they can breed their freaking mutts/strays/because they are such nice dogs/ cats. Or their cat needs to calm down. Whatever the ignorant reason. DO YOU PEOPLE REALIZE WHAT A BURDEN YOU ARE PUTTING ON OTHER PEOPLE TO ADOPT YOUR MISTAKES??? Damn. Slap. Wake up. http://news.aol.com/story/ar/_a/pets-hurle...S00010000000001 America has such good animal control, meaning they kill them silently, so you really don't realize the consequenes of your .... decisions. Here is what another country does.

thanks all for your responses! And rascal this gave me a good laugh. You are so right! :)

In the wake of mike vick. I hate to even say it's name. The NAACP and other blacks are coming out saying we (whites?) don't understand. Dog fighting is a part of their community. God it makes me so sick I want to throw up now. Where is Jesse and Al Sharpton on this one? Torturing animals is okay if your from the ghetto? Someone enlighten me before I kill myself. btw I KNOW that's not true. why isn't anyone making a HUGE ruckus on this one?
-
Okay Okay I have to throw this in. I have had people end up at my doorstep at work, saying their GPS device led them there, where the actual address is like 2 miles in the opposite direction. Give me a clue why it does this, because Im ready to throw a tomato at the next person who tells me they are here for the job I advertised for. They are getting us mixed up with a temp agency down the street.

I KNOW! Doesn't that just make you sick??? BTW, her attorney is a damn good one. A lady attorney. (may I add ;) )So I don't think it's as much of a celeb getting off than a case of who has enough money to hire a better attorney. One other thing I would like to point out. She was not just driving a little drunk, she was spotted driving the wrong way on an entrance ramp to a highway/expressway. Obviously they cannot prove it if the person who called 911 failed to show up in court (paid off perhaps?) but she eventually will kill someone. Just watch and wait.

Wow. I can see if you are old and should not be driving, but my guess is, when you are 87 years old, have to be tested by the DMV every year, just want to do your own driving locally to go bowling or buy your own groceries, that your attitude towards "old people" might come back to haunt you. Keep breathing, you'll get there. My dad used to say that. I think teens having a license is scarier. More accidents and deaths. Illinois just passed a tough "teen law" no more kiddies cruising together. LONG time overdo. I think every state should do it. I'm more concerened about some 16 year old with a license for 2 months killing me than an old person, believe me.
-
Garth, sometimes I think you are almost, ALMOST as nuts as me. That is kind of scary. ;)
-
Okay, I don't know what "step" I'm on, it's an early one. You have yet to learn all my gross habits. but for starters......... and this is really hard for me to admit....... I HAVE REALLY GROSS TOENAILS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyone with a foot fetish may as well never call me. :( Really Gross. Really.

Just thought I would throw this in here. Back in the 80s, I went out partying to the clubs in Chicago, and had ONE watermelon shot the whole night. Of course I was smoking my reefer throughout. On the way home, on the expressway, I was smoking a big ole doobie, and a state trooper pulled me over. He told me I was "dragging" the road. I think that was how I drove normally, considering I had gotten pulled over for that once before stone cold sober. I had put out my big ole doob as soon as I saw those flashing lights, and he had me step out of the car to give me the "drunk test." He told me he smelled alcohol on my breath. I told him the truth. ONE watermelon shot about 3 hours ago. I passed the test easily and he let me go. I wasn't drunk! I pulled away and relit my big ole doob. Looking back on it, or maybe even at the time, I really couldn't believe he couldn't smell the dope on me. But I guess he was more concerned with the alcohol he smelled on my breath?

Question. Why does that horse not go when I give him a nudge or even a kick with my foot? She told me too keep looking ahead while I was doing it, to visulize where I want to go. It was kind of hard too cause I was trying to remember how to sit on it. Heels down, toes up, knees resting on saddle, sigh. But every time I wanted it to go it just sat there and she would have to nudge it. I finally got to get it to go at the end of the lesson and then I said lets quit now cause I wanted to end the lesson on a high note.
