  1. "And Justice For All". Some synopses: "When a judge is charged with rape, Arthur Kirkland is forced to defend him. Kirkland has had problems with the judge in the past, including one incident when the judge wrongly sentenced his client Jeff McCullaugh because of a technicality. Kirkland faces a moral and legal dilemma." "Al Pacino is Arthur Kirkland, a sharp defence lawyer with a heart, who is dealing with a witch-hunting ethics tribunal, crazy and arrogant judges, an ill grandfather, a law partner (Tambor) on the verge of a nervous breakdown, and a new relationship. He definitely did not need the crazy new case that lands on his lap in the form of his least favourite judge, Henry T. Fleming. Soon, Arthur is faced with some decisions that will challenge his beliefs and affect his future." "It tells the story of a Baltimore defense lawyer named Arthur Kirkland (played by Al Pacino). In the film, Kirkland finds himself blackmailed into defending corrupt judge Henry T. Fleming (played by John Forsythe) for a rape charge, even though the two men personally loathe each other." "This film includes a well-known scene in which Kirkland shouts at Judge Rayford. "Mr. Kirkland, you are out of order". "You're out of order! You're out of order! The whole trial is out of order! They're out of order!"
  2. I find there's a certain fundamental DISHONESTY in how these variants are counted. For example, if 500 texts render a certain word, and 100 texts render it different in one letter, that's not counted as ONE "variation", but as ONE HUNDRED "variations!" If one takes a book that is NOT meant to be approached like a 21st century textbook, and approaches it with an approach of "mathematical exactness and scientific precision" rather than "gives light to the simple", one will eventually be disappointed.
  3. True. I believe my usage of the word "IF" covered that, however. An implication ("if, then") relies on the first part being true AND implying the second.
  4. Good point. If he WAS RAISED in this group-which he was- and they groomed him specifically and encouraged him and everything-making him a VIP- then there hasn't ever been a point where he's looked around and MADE A CHOICE.
  5. "Fantasy remains a human right: we make in our measure and in our derivative mode, because we are made: and not only made, but made in the image and likeness of a Maker." He's a fantasy writer, famous for "the Hobbit" and "Lord of the Rings." "My advice to all who have the time or inclination to concern themselves with the international language movement would be: 'Back Esperanto loyally.'" Major criticisms of him have centered around his obsession with languages, and say his whole purpose for writng LotR was to give him an outlet for writing them. (Consider his invented language of Quenya for the elves.) "'I liked white better,' I said. "'White!' he sneered. 'It serves as a beginning. White cloth may be dyed. The white page can be overwritten; and the white light can be broken.' "'In which case it is no longer white,' said I. 'And he that breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom.'" GREAT exchange from "Fellowship of the Ring." Gandalf the Grey recounts what happened when he went to consult with Saruman the White, and found out Saruman had turned, and now claimed he was "Saruman of Many Colors." "I am the lucky number." A notable line from "the Hobbit." Bilbo Baggins was added to a company of 12 dwarves plus one Gandalf, because they felt it was an ill omen to travel as a group of 13- so they added a 14th member. Bilbo later says this when Smaug asks him who he is- NOW remembering not to just give away his name. "If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world." Gandalf, in "the Hobbit", about hobbits in general. “… ‘Every worm has his weak spot’, as my father used to say, though I am sure it was not from personal experience.” Bilbo, in "the Hobbit", considering Smaug. "The praise of the praiseworthy is above all rewards." Faramir to Frodo, on "the Two Towers." "One felt as if there was an enormous well behind them, filled up with ages of memory and long, slow, steady thinking; but their surface was sparkling with the present: like sun shimmering on the outer leaves of a vast tree, or the ripples of a very deep lake." "The Two Towers", the description of Treebeard, upon looking into his eyes. "I have waited on faltering feet long enough. Since they falter no longer, it seems, may I not now spend my life as I will?" Eowyn, in "Return of the King". "Let us remember that a traitor may betray himself and do good that he does not intend. It can be so sometimes." Gandalf in "the Two Towers", after Grima tries to injure Gandalf by throwing a Palantir at him from Orthanc. "Hinder me? Thou fool. No living man may hinder me!" The Witch-King of Angmar, the Captain of the Nazgul (Ringwraiths), boasting of his supposed invincibility.... "Tall as the sea-kings of old, he stood above all that were near: ancient of days he seemed and yet in the flower of manhood; and wisdom sat upon his brow, and strength and healing were in his hands, and a light was about him." Aragorn, in "Return of the King", now dressed the part. "The hands of the king are the hands of a healer", which made the "healing" reference specific to him. "Indeed you did your best...I hope that it may be long before you find yourself in such a tight corner again between two such terrible old men." Gandalf to Pippin in "Return of the King", after they met with Denethor, the Steward of Gondor, in Minas Tirith.
  6. Correct- "the Bar Association!" "What you were trying to do was make yourself feel important. Making me feel dumb made you feel smart. But I'm not dumb and you're not half as smart as you think you are!" Rom finally begins to move out from behind Quark's shadow in this episode-beginning with forming the union. "Why do you get to be the High King?" "I'm a direct descendant of King Brian Boru. Besides... it's my program." "Isn't this your tooth sharpener?" "This p'tak just robbed my quarters!" "I want to know why such a security breach was allowed to occur in the first place." "Unfortunately, these things happen." "They did not happen on the Enterprise." "Really. Let's see. Stardate 46235.7, Ferengi privateers led by Daimon Lurin boarded and seized control of the Enterprise using two salvaged Klingon birds of prey. Stardate 45349.1 Berlinghoff Rasmussen, a petty criminal impersonating a scientist, committed numerous acts of theft against the crew of the Enterprise. Shall I continue?" "You mean to tell me that you've been walking around with a seeping infection of the tympanic membrane for two weeks?" "More like three, actually." "Rom, you could have died. Another forty-eight hours and you'd've been bidding for a new life in the Divine Treasury." "I guess it's a good thing I fainted when I did." "Why didn't you come to see me sooner?" "I couldn't. I was busy." "I'm sure your brother could've spared you for half an hour." This is what led to forming the union. Rom got so sick he passed out at work- since he was unable to get "sick tine" or a chance to visit a doctor.
  7. It ia Tolkien. I thought this was a lot easier than it seemed to be.

  11. I've read that in Australia, this is referred to as "Tall Poppy Syndrome." rfr has to make sure nobody gains in prominence past her- and since she has the personality of wet cardboard, that means everyone has to be kept as low-status as possible. Heck, this new kid alone now has enough status to make her feel threatened! Having different people teach ensures none of them becomes pre-eminent, and if one of them leaves, they only have to retape HIS segments and not end up running a whole class live again. "Lack of a central driving force" is a current concern that can't be addressed-since addressing it means kicking rfr from the driver's seat.

  13. There's mixed opinions on that. Some people think he is, others do not, and have some very specific criticisms of him.
  14. I noted a few things. A) His "recruits" seem to retain their own beliefs- one self-identifies as "Catholic"- which was a dirty word in twi until, apparently, this guy entered the room. (I wonder how long before he hears someone condemn his beliefs?) B) The first noteworthy person twi has been able to get into the news- and make no mistake, they never stop trying to find a way to steal a headline- is someone who was completely raised in twi. His parents have been in for over 30 years, and this guy's claim to claim is FOOTBALL. C) He's also in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, NOT isolated from other Christians. In other words, A) He's not as effective a "witnessing tool" as they would like. B) This is the best the entire organization could find to push into the limelight. And he's known for his sports abilities, not his mental acumen or professional excellence. Not to say his accomplishments don't count, but the absence of noteworthy professionals across the entire organization says something. C) They're hoping he can establish a "beachhead" in the FCA, but at the same time, he's exposed to other Christians, some of whom will be skilled on their own.

  17. The Drumhead? J'Dan was coding technology secrets from the Federation, while engaged in the officer exchange program.
  18. Mind you, I think they eventually WILL show a connection between UV light and ocular melanoma, but we don't have that definitively NOW. I still don't think that will affect vpw's story, since we still haven't found a way to connect the pfal lights with UV lights, but-in fairness- I wanted to point out I do THINK that UV light probably is ONE way to get ocular melanoma but that it's probably not the ONLY way. Someone brought up the idea that bright lights damaging eyes might predispose them to ocular melanoma, whether or not the lights are UV. It's an interesting idea, but I haven't seen any proven connection, nor can I necessarily connect it to vpw's story. Then again, I don't discount it, either. (More information's needed.) That IS twi logic. Then again, Raf said it best when he said it first: We don't die when we stop believing. We die when we stop breathing. Given how many of vpw's stories turned out to have been "tall tales" passed off as fact, it's now standard practice to disbelieve him until some reason can be found to believe him. It's just a healthier approach to what he claimed of himself. And more likely to be correct. Shocking to say that about a supposed "Man of God", but there you go. Of course, "Man of God" was one of those claims...
  19. "Fantasy remains a human right: we make in our measure and in our derivative mode, because we are made: and not only made, but made in the image and likeness of a Maker." 20. I read his article. A) He spends a lot of time pumping air into his POV, and denigrating the other POV. If his apologia is a lot stronger than the other side, it should be evident, and require little to "sell" it. B) I find he spent time being angry over the singular occurrence of the term "halal", and that he had no problem changing the word to "yahlal" without establishing this really is supposed to be the same word except on his say-so. Instead, he pronounced it didn't appear, and MUST BE another word. He skipped over the Rabbinical and Targum references to it where nothing had to be changed. (Wilson's Old Testament Word Studies mentioned them, but I'm not going to keep digging from there.) C) Despite his efforts to completely rewrite Ezekiel 28:14, he had to skip over "you walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire", saying that was a reference-in effect, a parenthetical reference- to a cherub who was next to the mortal man "the King of Tyrus". So, everything except that applied ONLY to the mortal man, and ONLY that part that couldn't be rewritten referred to the cherub. I could swear vpw doesn't get a pass for saying anything in Scripture was a "parenthetical reference" and suddenly stops addressing the being the preceeding and following verses address. Maybe "Installment II" had better material, but this was flawed. Considering how much it was critical all of that had to AGREE for his POV to prevail, I find he failed to make his case on the weight of evidence.
  21. Exactly-all that work to find his posts in a forum, but no time at all to examine raised questions about their own doctrine. The UNofficial motto was to agree with everything vpw said because he said it. No OFFICIAL statement was evermade aloud to that effect-but it was POLICY. They never claimed they were there to FIX anything. Furthermore, they didn't even understand what it meant to RESEARCH anything. Ever see when they said RESEARCH meant to REREAD submitted materials, to "SEARCH AGAIN" in them?
  22. A) According to that linked article, IF there's a connection between OCULAR melanoma and UV light, it has NOT been established. "It is known that exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays (either from the sun or sunbeds) increases the risk of developing melanoma of the skin. People whose skin burns easily are most at risk: typically, people with fair skin, fair or red hair and blue eyes. However, it is not yet known whether or not there is any link between UV ray exposure and the development of melanoma of the eye." B) All connections between UV light and the filming of the pfal class exist solely as speculations by posters on the GSC. I still want to know-if, supposedly, the lights in pfal just happened to be UV lights- why his eyes took all sorts of damage, but standing under what's been speculated to be UV FLOOD LIGHTS never tanned nor sunburned his face across the class. IF they were UV lights-and we STILL have only SPECULATION they were- they shouldn't just have singled out his eyes and skipped the rest of his face. I don't want to be a pain about this, but I think this keeps getting forgotten, and some posters keep thinking this was some sort of PROVEN POINT. (So far, no definitive proof for a specific cause has been found.)
