  1. Lori Petty played Tank Girl, Malcom Mc Donald, IIRC, played the Big Bad. Jet Girl, the shy British geek, was played by Naomi Watts, if you can believe it.
  2. It was not Dr Higgins, it was Rosalind Rinker. The thread "the Way-Living in Wonderland" (I heartily recommend that thread and "vp and Me in Wonderland" when you have time) is here: https://www.greasespotcafe.com/ipb/topic/7363-the-wayliving-in-wonderland/ Towards the bottom of page 1 was my post dated August 29, 2005, and that's where the quote appears. We discuss that very quote later- Oakspear, IIRC, spotted it first and we discussed it from there. *checks* At the bottom of page 10, SUNESIS was the one that caught it (not Oakspear.) We start discussing it further on page 11.
  3. Hm. They told him he could do anything EXCEPT ONE, and that was his immediate UNYIELDING focus, and they had the nerve to be offended that he went 180 degrees from his instructions. (ANY church where tithing is taught on for an ENTIRE MONTH looks like it's ONLY in it for the money, and NOBODY will like it.) "They said not to teach on money, so I didn't-I taught on tithing." I'll bet he felt so clever, so pleased with himself for adhering-PARTLY- to the letter while perverting the spirit of his instructions. For those wondering if they were right to give him instructions, they were the ELDERS-the experienced local leaders, and he was the guy who JUST arrived and was young and lacking in experience. Unless he had a compelling reason beyond tweaking their noses, he should have considered their counsel wise and followed it. Convenient coincidence that what served God just happened to be the easy path for him. pg-177, he meets Rosalind Rinker in Indiana. (page-178, since "Nothing cataclysmic...") Watch this next quote from pg-179. pg-180. pg-181. pg-185-186. vpw is continuing his tour. Somebody asked about vpw admitting he'd gone to school and been working as a pastor for some time BEFORE he believed "the Bible was the Word of God." This was the quote from "the Way-Living in Love" where he admitted it.
  4. The discussion "The Way-Living in Wonderland" discussed the book "The Way-Living in Love." We had excerpts of the content of that book, and discussed them. One of the quotes was from something like the second year of vpw's career as a minister, meaning he'd completed years of study to complete a Masters and Doctorate in Divinity. BTW, the Masters was from the respectable Princeton Theological Seminary (not Princeton University, but both are located at Princeton NJ, thus their names) and the Doctorate was from Pikes Peak Seminary, which was more of a degree mill than anything else, with all work submitted by mail. The quote was from that time, and said Dr Higgins (I think it was her) introduced him to the idea that the Bible was the Word of God. He claimed he hadn't heard that before- not believing it, anyway. At the time, he'd been working as a pastor at a church and delivering sermons on Sunday. I'll see if I can get a link to the thread, then the post. BTW, since that got discussed in the thread, there's more than 1 post that's relevant, obviously.
  5. For a moment, I was thinking "Donald Pierce" and thinking about how I never watched the X-Men movies. But ALEXANDER Pierce is connected with SHIELD. So, this might be ROBERT REDFORD.
  6. That's the movie. If you'd seen it, you might have remembered there was a Cole Porter number in it.
  7. "Now - everybody throw down your guns or I scrape off all her make up!.....This might take a really long time." "Look, it's been swell, but the swelling's gone down." "Listen up, cause I'm only telling you this once. I'm not bedtime story lady, so pay attention. It's 2033. The world is *screwed* now. You see, a while ago this humongous comet came crashing into the earth. Bam, total devastation. End of the world as we know it. No celebrities, no cable TV, no water. It hasn't rained in 11 years. Now 20 people gotta squeeze inside the same bathtub - so it ain't all bad." "All the king's horses and all the king's men... wish they had the technology I have." "I have two words for you. Brush your teeth! " "What the hell is that?" " Sounds like Cole Porter, sir." "End it!" "Sir!" ]"You gotta think about it like the first time you got laid. You just gotta say: "Daddy, are you sure this is right?" " You're sick." " How come you always do that? How come you always cover your mouth when you smile? You got bad teeth or somethin'?" " Eight, eight, the burning hate. Between Sunday and Monday there lies a day so dark it will devastate. " " Look, if you want to torture me, spank me, lick me, do it. But if this poetry sh* continues, shoot me now, please." "You take the tank!" " Are you sure? " "You see, this tank isn't... isn't..." "What? Just one little adjective and we'll have a *whole* sentence. Isn't, glad, sad... mad... Lonely..." " Isn't... Operational." "How do I know you're not lying?" "Because if, if I was lying, your lungs would be full of cyanide gas." " Cool! So we get a new tank."
  8. IIRC, that's Howard Jones and "Life In A Day." (If I recall poorly, it might be "Life in ONE Day" and I may have the artist wrong.)
  9. In an absolute sense, yes. In a practical sense, there seem to be marked differences. If I understand correctly (and I may not).... 1) Peter Wade had some education before vpw met him- so vpw co-opted a trained Christian writer (something he probably always wanted to do, since he was plagiarizing dead ones down the years, and edited live ones for years, during which I SPECULATE he plagiarized them for his Sunday sermons) 2) Peter Wade wasn't a product of twi's programs- he didn't go into the Way Corps, etc. 3) Early on, when vpw did some stuff, Peter Wade left abruptly and voluntarily. The offshoots tend to happen around FIRINGS and people being kicked off grounds. Someone wondered why some posters didn't put all the pieces together and leave sooner. Looks to me like Peter Wade did just that. (BTW, why didn't I leave sooner than I did? I wasn't "in" until vpw had died. I was "out" about 3-4 years later, depending on how you count "in". When it was time to leave, most of my state was leaving at the same time, for what I thought were the same reasons, and good reasons. So, we left together, more or less. A few years after that, I sort-of drifted off. Sometime after that I crossed paths with the GSC, and the rest is history, albeit minor history.)

  12. Fine, but I thought it was a good idea to add those links and make it easier for everyone to read it. You might want to read it directly in the thread later. Someone may want to but not want to post to ask, and so on. Just because I could read the news didn't mean you were the sole reader who was excluded. So, I figured it was better to link that than not to link it.
  13. Any chance this was "Catch 22"???

  16. Ok, Raf is up. If I understand correctly, Human was giving his perspective, how he sees situations in accordance with these games. He stated under which conditions he felt he would disqualify himself- because otherwise he'd consider it 'cheating.' For example, I find it ok to ask Mrs Wolf (using only her memory) but will not allow her to look up the answer, only tell me what she remembers herself (and I give her credit accordingly.) I don't think Human's ideas are far from mine in this. We're all on the honor system here, and all of us seem to have no problems with it.

  18. -This movie was a success. The original cut of the film was about double the final cut. A marathon editing session trimmed the film down, and dropped all the jokes that didn't work and all the scenes that slowed down the story (and a few that were just...off.) -One well-known actor wasn't credited when the movie hit the theaters- by his request. (Now everybody knows he was in it.) -Columbia Pictures refused to film this movie in the way the director insisted. So, he went to Fox and the movie was a hit- filmed the director's way (black and white.) - Because the same agent represented 3 actors, 2 of them- who played major comedic roles- were suggested to the third as possible cast members. -The "Darwin" mentioned was ERASMUS Darwin, grandfather to Charles. -Go ahead and count them- there's exactly 2 murders in this film- and one of them doesn't exactly count. (He got better.) -Deleted scenes included a reading of a will, and some exposition explaining who a certain police inspector was. (Inspector Kemp.) -Black Forest Cherry Cake (schwarzwalder kirschtort) was mentioned and eaten in this movie. The Lancet was read in this movie. (On the train.) -Local to me is a pasta place named "Verm Y Chely." It's a running gag between me and Wordpup to pass it and say "Are you speaking of the WORM or the SPAGHETTI?" as a reference to this movie. If that doesn't ring a bell, at least remember that a worm-with very few exceptions- is NOT a human being. -The lecture worked for the audience, but the students should have been advanced well beyond it by the time they got TO that lecture. Then again, since the lecture itself wasn't the point of the scene, the audience just goes with it. -If you look closely, you'll see Kenny Marsh imitating a much more famous, repeated, moment in the movie, done by another actor. -It's considered a goof that one character "knocks" when arriving "home". However, it's equally likely he "knocked" to call another character to the door to announce their arrival, and to perform introductions. (He didn't use his knuckles, he used the door-knocker.) - There's actually a titular line. The inspector says the title in his lines- not that most people noticed or could make it out! (Blame the impenetrable accent.) -"Tail piece" is how one non-translated word would be rendered in English- but it isn't a word at all in the language in which it was spoken. (Unless, say, it got added due to this movie.) -He did NOT say a dirty word! The cinematographer/ film expert was initially told to shoot in a style- but he SHOULD have been told to EVOKE the style and not actually COPY it. He was supposed to render it BRIGHTER- which he did, once he was told to.
  19. That was it. The re-release of the serial as a long movie viewing was successful, and Lorenzo Semple thought it warranted a new TV show.
  20. If that's the correct answer (Human? Is it?) then I think that's a legit way to get there without cheating.
  21. No. " Hogan's Heroes" was indeed in the 1960s "Stalag 17" came out in 1953. Also, they were not intended to be the same story. No characters were in common. In the serial and show I mentioned, it was definitely the same thing, and the 2 main characters had the same names (supposedly, the same outfits, as well.)
  22. If you look up something used as a clue (Human used "Godzilla", for example), then it would be cheating. If you looked at the above list and, say, went to look up "Xanadu" or something, then it should not be considered cheating.
  23. Ok, here's an odd way to run some clues. There was a successful television show (the one I want you to guess.) Its way was paved, decades earlier, by a movie serial. In 1943, a 15-chapter movie serial was shown in theaters. It eventually appeared on DVD, basically unedited, but before that, it was heavily edited on VHS. It's been suggested that the hatchet job edit was done because Sony was now the parent company, and nobody wanted them offended. AMC and TCM have actually aired the entire serial. The serial has been criticized. Part of this is its now-insensitive content (it was aired around World War 2!), and part of it was complaints with the casting of the 2 main characters, as well as their costumes (the lead's costume was too baggy I'm sure there's a few winces when people see the lead use the word "jap" a few times in the last episode. Decades later (1965), this serial was re-released in theaters as a marathon showing. The smashing success it had in college towns especially led to the development and greenlighting of what was the successful television show. What was the name of the successful television show?
