  1. Learn something new everyday. Zixar you should teach. Or own your own business and become a multimillionaire, Ha! Thank you. Well, back to our beloved Excathedra. What's up? Try unchecking that like I said? Won't hurt anything will it guys, to try what I am suggesting. I like to try and have as little as possible running in msconfig, startup. Damn! I've seen some folks with dozens of things in there running at startup. One on a friends computer recently was called BLASTER.EXE Yikes! Go here, it is the best! Startups Full list Just type in the application showing in Startup and this site puts it in plain English like it should be in the first place.
  2. Ok, Ex, I have something you can try. Go to Start / Run and type in msconfig. From there go to the startup tab, On the left look for any entries that begin with rundll32. I bet if you uncheck that entry your problem may be solved. But Please list the full command or path that the runddll gives. It is located in the column just to the right. You might have to expand the column to read the full command. Please post it here. In other words, what program or file is the rundll function running or opening at STARTUP? Maybe it is a piece of spyware or virus related. If you uncheck it then it will not start up in the first place and therefore will not hang on shutdown. On the other hand. It may be something that IS required or needed in your computer. For example I have a runddll that gives this: rundll32.exe irprops.cpl., BluetoothAuthentication Agent What the hell does that mean! I wish they would make these things understandable in plain English for us average non-geek types! It obviously has something to do with my Wireless Bluetooth mouse and keyboard and I know CPL stands for Control Panel. So I know that I will not need to uncheck that for now. But if you uncheck a rundll item and it does not solve your problem, you can always go back and put the checkmark back on the item to activate it on Startup again.
  3. Sounds virus related to me. This might help (copied from some site.): Rundll32.exe Errors: Rundll32.exe is a Windows program that executes other 32bit programs: Rundll32.exe itself is most likely not the cause but it could be corrupted: First do this to see if a startup program may be causing it. Click on Start Run Type in Msconfig and press enter Click on the Startup tab Now scroll down and see if you see Rundll32.exe listed. Be sure to maximize the window so you can see the complete path for the startup entries. You may need to look to the right portion of the screen to see the rundll32.exe entry. Ignore the "Load Power Profile" entries, they won't be the cause of this. If you are able to locate other entries that are being started using rundll32.exe, remove the check mark next to it or them and click on Apply. Follow the prompts to restart. Be sure to scan for a virus or if you don't have a virus program, go here and run a free online virus scan. Some viruses are known to replace the Windows copy of rundll32.exe with an infected version.
  4. Sounds horrible, Brady. I am sure those infections wreak havoc and are a lot of work to clean up. I have zero experience in large networks like that but it would seem that there would be a way to have the worm or virus stopped in a workgroup environment in much the same way as we prevent viruses individually? What about Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition as shown here: NAV Corporate Edition I can only speak from the experience of mostly day to day users. Spyware seems to jam people's computers up more than anything these days. I am talking about home users who do not have access to an IT guy at work who can help them out. Everybody seems to be convinced about Virus prevention. But most have no clue about the other crap they can get from the internet and what to do to prevent it. But I have also found that sometimes people are just plain lazy or disinterested in doing what it takes to really keep a lean, mean, machine. In spite of the wealth of information at their fingertips. Sometimes I don't blame them. Computers are still complicated in my opinion. Most want to just turn the dumb thing on, use it and then turn it off. I wish it were that simple. Maybe someday it will be.
  5. And Brady, in my unprofessional opinion, the single biggest problem with computers all over the place to day is Spyware. I believe it is now causing as much harm as viruses. And people are not aware of it. They blame the computer or Microsoft or the programs. But the blame is with sneaky internet sites and lack of prevention and maintenance on the part of the user.
  6. Google taught me everything I know. :)--> Then there is this concept that I am sure Dell in Microsoft does not like to think about. I had a friend who was amazing on computers. He was a natural, and was also very good at web design. Not uncommon for him to stay up all night working on projects. He taught me a lot. At one time he had at least three computers in his home. (I usually have 4). He gave it all up! He doesn't use email or have an internet account. He doesn't have a computer! He just has a cell phone. He says he has more time now and life is simpler. He just got tired of it all. I've often thought about that. I was telling him about this new thing called Google and he just kinda glazed over and changed the subject. I guess he'll never spend any time on GreaseSpot or any other sites. But I know he likes TV.
  7. Hello Excathedra. How is the family? Come visit. Did you go to mass today? If not you're hell bound and all heaven can't stop you. Do they still have mortal sin? I think I have a lot of them.
  8. Right click on My Computer and click Manage. Click on Device Manager. In the right hand pane look for Display Drivers. Mine says NVIDIA GeForce4 TI 4800 SE, for example. Post what yours says. Then right click on it and sel;ect Properties and go to the driver tab. There you can see what driver version you have. Mine says 5.2.1.6 which is the latest Nvidia Detonater drivers. These days Microsoft is doing a good thing by allowing certain drivers to be a part of their automatic Windows Updates, Nvidia and ATI included. You have installed ALL of the latest windows updates haven't you? If not, do it immediately to protect your system and make it run better as well.
  9. Most common monitor problem I find is the refresh rate. If it is set too low the monitor looks crummy and causes eye strain, even if you have an expensive monitor. Right click anywhere on the open desk top. Go to Properties and click on the tab called Settings. Set the Color quality to highest (32bit) and the screen resolution to something more than 800 x 600. I like 1024 x 768. Now click on the Advanced button and click on the Monitor tab. Make sure the screen refresh rate is set to 75 Hertz (that is unless ytou have one of those flat screen monitors. Those take a different refresh rate, I think 65 Hertz) Most importantly, get the latest drivers for your graphics card and install them. It is very easy. You just click on the downloaded drivers and they self install. Get them from your graphics card amnufacturer's website. Probably NVidia or ATI. After you install the drivers you may have to do all the above settings again so maybe do the driver thing first.
  10. Talking out of both sides of her *** Question: "Is being out of debt a requirement for anything?" Answer: "No." Question: How about if you want to be a member of leadership? Answer: "Yes, there is." I see this a nothing more than being caught in a lie. And this person is President of TWI!!!!? She does not seem very qualified to be President of anything, really.
  11. Question: "Are people required to take particular classes if they want to be assosicated with The Way?" Answer: "No .... " Yeah, right. C'mon. A person did not last very long if they had no interest in taking any classes. This was common knowledge. The pressure to take the foundational, Intermediate, and even Advanced classes was so intense that either a person took the class or they were told that they should go elsewhre. They were confronted as to why they they had no desire to take the class. We were all but given an ultimatum. Take Rev. Martinadale's new Advanced Class or get out. 12. Thanks for making those document available, Pat. I know it must have cost you hundreds of dollars to obtain those, not to mention the time it took to convert them to PDF. Both Rosalies' an Roberts' depositions have all the appearance of lies and coverups in my opinion. Some of their statements appear to be ABSOLUTELY false. I think some of us who were around at those very times could beg to differ with some of their statements. As they used to say in their own words, "Sincerity is no guarantee for truth." 13. Blue Man Group wanted my autograph.
  14. I have not seen this thread in weeks. Ha! Oh, some day I think we should just do an annual Corps Week in Las Vegas. Followed by another week for eveyone else including new people. But if you ask me to volunteer for things I probably wont be very reliable. And I probably will only be there for half of each week so I can enjoy the best of both worlds.
  15. Looking forward to it. I hope everyone who comes will bring pictures with you, please. I will have a scanner and laptop with me so we can make digital copies to exchange or email. I am not sure if Valerie would mind if others came. After all, some of us married other Corps who will be there. Ask her. If you hear from either Kay or Polly, tell them I said hi. John Richeson Tampa, FL
  16. It was a Miracle we even made it to and lived through AC 79, Excathedra. I think you know why. But don't post it here. :)--> John R
  17. Another question. I am considering putting in a TV card in this computer. THe reason is so that while computing, we could still see a small window of TV and kinda keep an eye on say... a game or waiting for a movie to start, etc. The sound from the TV is not an issue because we can retain the TV sound while the TV is in PC mode. But there is no way to receive a picture while in PC mode. A TV card will be the solution. But how do I split the signal and SHOULD I split the signal? There is only one cable connection coming from the wall to the big screen. A TV card requires a cable TV connection as well. How and what can I use to do this?
  18. Hey Zixar, My daughter just got that movie. She is in love with Johnny Depp. I really liked the movie on surround sound. Awesome special effects. Are you saying the tool to do these tests is on the Pirates DVD? Where might I find a THX optimizer? With 6 speakers to hook up it is possible to get one backwards. Would love to test it.
  19. Not very knowledgeable on these matters but I do know that FP has been vastly improved since 2000. I hear that FP 2003 is even better that 2002 and before. Couldn't hurt to have it in your arsenal of tools. It is getting good reviews. With their $50 billion in cash, I am sure Microsoft is trying to compete with DreamWeaver (or buy them). Ha. Isn't there another good one people use for web design?
  20. This interesting gyration keyboard mouse combo turns out to be lousy. I returned it. http://www.gyration.com/mcrsuite.htm What to do? A normal mouse and keyboard only gives us about a 6' range. However, the wireless technology called Bluetooth provides a 30' range. I am trying this one from Microsoft right now and it is nice so far. Bluetooth Mouse / Keyboard
  21. Hooked up the sound today. It is outsatanding using this sound card and optical output to a large Yamaha receiver then out to large home theater style speakers and sub. Audigy2 ZS Platinum Larger image of Audigy This is the first and only sound card that enables you to output from computer to receiver. The results are awesome. You should hear (and feel) Unreal Tournament III on this thing. Next I'll try out a wireless mouse and keyboard like one shown here: Gyration mouse and keyboard Mike - you have been a nice boy. I'm sure Santa will be generous. [This message was edited by igotout on November 23, 2003 at 23:37.]
  22. Mister P-Mosh I was surprised to learn that the expensive flat panel TV's are not as good as these DLP TV. (Digital Light Processing). 1. Screen burn in is a factor. THis could be caused by those dumb logos you see on many stations now and those things at the bottom of CNN and news stations. Burn in can also be cause by using it as a computer by the icons, task bar, etc. 2. Cost - plasmas are twice as much as DLP TV's. 3. Repairs - when those littel pixels go out on a plasma you can not repair that. DLP is repairable inexpensively. 4. Picture quality - no comparison. The DLP's simply look better and brighter as well. 5. Computer monitor for you home theater - 1280 x 768 in DLP, 800 x 600 in Plasma. The DLP's currently are the best for a computer screen. That being said, the plasmas reign supreme for how skinny they are. That is very cool indeed. But they weigh a ton compared to those DLP's. THe only reason I could think of Plasma over DLP is if you absolutely need the thin style. No other reason makes sense. John R.
  23. Aww, now it wasn't all that expensive. An excellent alternative is to do everything through an actual computer complete with awesome speakers, ATI All in Wonder 9800 Pro TV card, and all the other things that can be done on computer. But the size of even the largest of computer monitors is still the weakest link with these so called PC MEdia Centers. Excellent quality, even better than a big screen TV, but small size. Who wants to gather round a computer monitor to watch a movie? Maybe that is why, though almost all computers come with a DVD player standard now, I suspect they are not used for movie watching very much. Someday when they have reasonably priced 50' computer monitors this problem will be solved. (The good 22" CRT's are $600. to $800.) As it is, the speaker problem is rapidly advancing. Some high end computer speaker systems such as Klipsch and Creative sound outstanding for movies and music. I am told that DVD's being played through a computer system produce better quality than through some DVD players on the market. The merge between computer and Media center is happening but still not there yet. They are all competing. I am not sure the PC will be dominant in the living rooms but they will play a part, expecially for Inernet, MP3's, recording shows on hard drive, etc. THe big screen TV's will get better for computing, and cheaper. But right now most of them suck as a computer monitor, even the plasma ones. Mine is adequate but not great. But at least it is functional in a practical way. I get up to 1280 x 768 but only a 60mhz refresh rate. But I am used to a crisp 1600 x 1200 at a 75mhz refresh rate.
  24. There is also Adobe Photoshop Elements which has many of the major features of the full blown Adobe Photoshop but at a fraction of the cost. Some people use Microsoft Picture It, others use use Adobe and there are many other choices ranging from free to $500. I personally like one called Thumbs Plus by Cerious Software. One of its excellent features is batch resizing. You can take a whole group of digital photos and collectively resize the whole bunch at a few mouse clicks. Another feature is Auto Rename. It is where you can rename the whole batch of photos all at one time instead of having to individually do that task. For example Birthday1, Birthday2, Birthday3, etc., Here is a helpful link too: Digital photo info
