If you are talking about what I think you are, I agree. In fact I do not think it is a good idea to have an external drive as your main hard drive with OS and data on it. For one thing, I think it would be slow compared to SATA or IDE. Oh, nevermind, I see you are talking about an external drive that caused corruption in your C drive. Hmmm never heard of that happening. But that's OK, I have see a new USB optical mouse installation wreak havoc and cause a reinstall of XP! That EZ drive case, however is not of this external type. It is installed via IDE cable directly into the motherboard. Yet it is 2 drives, one mirroring the other for an easy way to back up. I have tested it. You can simply remove one of the drives, take it to another computer (similar in nature but does not have to be identical by any means). Turn on the computer and it boots right up. It is a duplicate drive, not a ghost image. No Riad hardware or soafware needed. That's why I like this solution. Simple and easy. External drives are good for storage, backups off site and things of that nature. For example, if I saw you at the CFF reunion, I could bring my entire music collection including videos on an external and give it to you in a matter of minutes if you brought a large enough laptop. Then you could give me a copy of all of yours as well. This is just a hypothetical situation, of course. I like the kind you can open and install any hard drive you want rather than a fixed unopenable drive. Though they say they do not require a driver, I have found that they come with software which is beneficial to have installed on any computer you are going to use it on. Sometimes it is required to change a drive letter as well. Zixar, is the computer saying, "no operating system found", In my limited experience, I have found that BSOD"S are almost always a hardware conflict. Try removing everything, sound card, NIC, modem, even graphics if you have to, maybe even the floppy. Then try booting. I am sure you have checked BIOS for stuff there too. Try diasbling the USB in BIOS. I don't know. Could be a lot of things. Good luck with that prob.

"You're asking old dogmatists to learn new tricks." :D--> :D--> :D--> So funny, and true. You ought to be a columnist. :D--> But I still like my old buddy and friend Mark G. and his wife too. Is he still Pres. of CES right now? Been a while since I have seen him. We go way back in the previous Way World and went through the Corps together too. He's a good man and a good father as well.

Hello My 3, Try this: Duplidisk 3 raid case Buy two of these, one for home and one for office. You will need two hard drives for each system. Buy a 3rd hard drive to keep off site for added security. You can at any time make your office drive become your home drive by bringing it home with you and inserting the drive into drive 1. Works for me. I find it is better than RAID, less complicated. Constantly mirrors two hard drives for security. When you travel just use a laptop and brich your relevant data with you. When you get home save your work on your office computer. There are many other solutions ranging from PC Anywhere to laptops that hook up to an office docking station at each location. SOme laptops are powerful these days and can do most anything.

Now, I think you can see why I married her 22 years ago, even though our TWI Limb Leader at the time, Gerald W, told her "You can do better than him".

I saw this quote somewhere on your site. It is a classic and needs no further explanation. Ha! "In my heart there were only two men who could have handled the Presidency, you and Craig. Right now there is only one man who can save the Ministry, that’s you..." Alleged statement made by VPW to CG, of course revealed after VPW died and written by the hand of our dear savior, CG. :D--> It made me laugh a lot again just like some of us laughed privately among ourselves the first time it was read. Am I right, excathedra?

Are they copy locked, Zixar? I am not so sure. I will have to test it out. I suppose you are saying that if I burn another copy of a copy I made with DVD X copy it will not work? I like burning extra copies of DVD's that I own so that I can have them near other DVD players in my house and also at my workplace DVD player in my computer at another location so I don't have to search all over for my ONE copy.

You got married to Ermal?

This thread is is an electronic extension of my daily funny papers, the best part of the newspaper. I fell a little behind so this link relates to the previous page. Is this the unpacking expert you refer to? http://www.reahard.org/bo.htm "TRAVEL EXPERIENCE: Traveled extensively domestically and internationally visiting each of the fifty states, Mexico, and Canada and most countries in Europe, South America, Central America, and the Far East." Whyyy this man has traveled more that ye all combined. He has forgotton more about travel than we may ever know. Wouldn't waste his time on ya.... :D-->

Tom, I found myself dazed and confused on the top floor of that other library one night with a few other 9th Corps "renegades" after having been out "witnessing" in a few bars til the wee hours near daybreak. I was proud of them. And it was their 1st year in res! Future leaders.... all of them. The current Lloyd is nice. Leave him alone, you meanies. :D--> He survived TWI 2 as a Limb coordiantor and posted mightily on this forum after he was booted, he and his lovely 5th Corsp wife. But he seems to have moved on to better things in INDY. Bottom floor.... all I remember was those butt cans and coffee. We all smoked like a house afire. What the hell did we talk about, not knowing current events? Musta been some strange conversations. I even smoked on the first LEAD group whilst climbing mountains. Ha! I threw butts on beautiful mountains. Damn me!

Please meet on the top floor at 5:30am tomorrow for a special class being taught by Rev.'s TT and Ex. Be 10 min early please and coordinators, make sure all your people are accounted for. DRESS YOUR BEST DAMMIT!

I am surprised no one has yet mentioned the Free Spy Sites program. I am not even in the industry and I know about this gem! Listen up. Spyware is ruining computers all over America. It comes from all over. But imagine if your browser was configured such that you COULD NOT get spyware even if you tried. Why eliminate spyware when you can avoid getting it in the first place? Enter Spy Sites. This little program puts thousands of KNOWN spyware sites into your Restricted Sites Zones in your browser. Awesome. Now every time I run AdAware or Spybot they are like the Maytag Repairman. It comes back clean not only on mine but on a variety of others I have tested over a period of many months. This little guy seems to do the trick. What I know so far. If you use the free version of Spy Sites, you can get the same protection as Spy Sites plus that you pay for but they are both installed in two different directories. Don't get the two confused. Once you get Spy Sites installed be sure to also install their latest updated database of new spyware sites. Then open Spy Sites and install the sites in your browser by following the instructions given. It is a little tricky and not an intuitive interface. Be sure to go to the help menu. When done you will now have 6,701 known offenders that are blocked. Goodbye spyware! Install it on your friends and family and help in the battle against a problem that is a worse problem that viruses. Oh, and PS... disable the stupid Messenger Service or you are in for more trouble than you scan shake a stick at. John R.

Jason - some of the things you said can be taken care of without too much problem Like having Real Player go out and check the internet for things every 5 minutes. I find that most programs these days can be prevented from invading our privacy by certain tweaks and unchecking things. Problem is it takes a lot of digging to do this. These vendors, I believe, purposely make it difficult to find out how to turn off their "features". But it can be done. Even with crappy Real. Kazaa Lite is ok, not Kazaa. And you just have to turn off file sharing.

I originally posted this question for Zixar and others who are able to shed some light: Are we truly protected from hackers by using an everyday router such as Linksys or D-Link? Are the computers behind those routers truly anonymous and hidden or not? Do they provide a "firewall" protection as advertised? Citigroup has those hilarious Identity Theft commercials that show how credit card and other items were stolen in spite of a firewall. Yet when I go to a site like: GRC.COM - Shields Up It shows that I am quite protected...... Stealth..... or so It seems. Yet they show my exact IP address! Scary. Also please comment on those who are not behind a router or who are on a dial up connection. If I recall from many years ago when I was on dial up, I was under the impression that it was more secure than Broadband connections such as DSL or Cable. Fianlly, could you comment on why people still get so much Spyware and viruses in spite of the fact that they may be behind a firewall? Some people are under the impression that a firewall protects them from all evils. Not so in my opinion!

Zix, you shoud do this for a living! Set up networks for businesses and homes. You'll make a bundle, with your knowledge. DNYU basic appears to be free. Nice! You can host you own website even with a static IP address like with our DSL and cable modems. We use a company called Hostsave. It is only about $9 a month. In our small service business I need to outsource at that price. I do not need another distraction, but it is tempting. But tell me, Zixar, how might I use this free service for using PC Anywhere? In order to connect to my remote computer, the IP address is needed. Sometimes it changes as you know. I am a little confused as to how or IF I can implement DNYU in this simple situation. Thanks, JR PS - Zixar, are we truly protected from hackers by using an everyday router such as Linksys or D-Link? Are those computers behind those routers truly anonymous and hidden or not...... Oh never mind, I'll just start a new thread on that topic.

WOw, Zixar that is quite a setup. I have never seen a device like that before. Pretty fast too. Looks like people would opt for this instead of a T1 line. What do people use who host websites? Tom Strange that appears to be faster than mine and I am somewhat satisfied with this connection. You must be in a good area.

Pawtucket - operate a couple of the 9 manifestations...I forgot which two. Google will tell you SOCKS - have your kitty, Socks, work on it. They know all about mice.

Awesome, Zixar. Will this work with two DSL connections or two cable connections as well? Can you post a link or a picture of a "load balancing" or dual sharing router? I have never heard of this before but I like the idea. My current routers are typical where you plug the Internet into the WAN port. So....does your routers have a double Wan port or something? I have used cable and DSL. I like DSL better here. They are both pretty good but the cable was less stable. DSL is not shared really like cable. Another thing I like about DSL at least here is that the IP address changes very infrequently for some reason. I am a PC Anywhere user so this becomes significant to me. At one location the IP address has remained the same for two months. My cable used to change almost every day. (I know there are other solutions but this worked for me.) Anyway around here cable and DSL both run $35 to $40 per month. In your setup it would cost $80 to have tremendous speed and stability. Not bad if you need that. How does your connection speed compare to a T-1 line? How fast is it? Do some tests and lets compare. Try this site: Internet speed test Mine comes in at 1220.1 kbps, 2nd time was 1203.5 kbps

I am still having trouble seeing this site. It appears to be restricted for some reason. Maybe it is just my goshdarn computer, not sure. But I have tried it on a few different ones, same ISP. However, I can go to this site. Is this a URL direction service? http://www.cjb.net/

Where are these programs coming from?

My opinion is ...your time is valuable too. Count the cost as Zix says and consider the easiest route of all which is replacement. Toss one and get all new stuff including the faster and more stable XP. I highly reccomend AGAINST upgrading that system with XP. XP deserves new hardware.... and it is ungodly cheap these days. That being said and budget allowing, do not get the cheapest out there, however. Try going middle of the road. I always try to buy for the future if possible. Just go for it. You'll thank me later. When you get to the point of purchase, just consult with the wise folks here who can steer you in the right direction on what to purchase. -

WIndows 98 is all but obsolete. This would also indicate that he has an older computer. Honestly the best thing you can do, if you can afford it is make the switch. Just go get a new computer with XP on it. Its a lot of work but you'll save in the long run. Just look at these Dell offers from $500 with at 17" monitor! http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/f...s=19&l=en&s=dhs You'll spend $500 in frustration and time in trying to heal an old system. -
Where are these programs coming from?
igotout replied to Mark Sanguinetti's topic in Computer Questions
What operating system? First do the simplest thing. Go to Start, Programs, Startup. Delete anything in there which you do not want to start up every time your computer starts. Why a computer begins to slow down can range for something simple to complex. My neighbors got so bad I told him the easiest thing was to remove his hard drive, throw it away and get a new one and start all over. But I have also seen people with awesome systems who have trashed it before long. 90% of these problems are caused by users actions. Rarely is is because of the OS or the hardware. Almost always Spyware and/or Viruses. I sometimes wonder if people are getting fed up with computers rather than more excited by them. They require a lot of stewardship and a lot of knowledge, all of which can be found on Google.com But once you master the details and make the dozens of required tweaks, you can have a system that opens huge programs like Microsoft Word in 1 second.
