I can identify every one in that great Neal Adams piece. It's a tough one though, as it includes some pretty obscure characters from Quality comics in the 40's. And just to keep things accurate-it's DC comics that do Superman, not Marvel

Dinah Shore and Chevrolet were as closely associated as mom and apple pie ( or Jack Benny and Jell-o)

I just listened to the whole show. The high points were Dinah Shore singing 'Blues in the Night', and Danny Kaye. I have to admit I suspect that the requests from servicemen are probably not exactly kosher. They're worded a little too clever, and it's interesting that someone is needing to hear from Merle Oberon right when she's promoting her new film. I would surmise that they put together shows based on performer availability, and studio promotion, then packaged it in a 'command from 'Sgt JM somewhere in the Caribbean' format. That's not to disparage the show or it's intent. They presented top notch entertainment to the armed forces and that's great, and the genuine birthday greeting to the Sgt was nice.

I would agree with that statement as far as the AL east goes, though the Red Sox are just as aggressive as the Yankees in paying big bucks so you have 2 big spending teams in the same division. The Blue Jays and Orioles certainly have been pressured to step up. Don't ask about the Devil Rays. It doesn't explain the resurgence of the Tigers, and White Sox, or why the Twins field a competitive team every year in a small market. And the AL west doesn't know Steinbrenner exists until October, and are not building their teams based on Steinbrenner moves. George has been everyone's favorite scapegoat for30 years. I think alot of NL teams need to evaluate their own systems and determine why their team don't have the depth they used to be so proud of.

The AL has been trouncing the NL at an alarming rate this year in Interleague games. I'm happy to see it as I'm still an American Leaguer at heart, and had to endure the 60's and 70's when the National League was clearly superior, (due largely to more NL teams opening up to black players first, and a more aggressive style of play). In a perfect world, the leagues would be balanced, but in the meantime , I'm enjoying the AL dominance. Of course this means the NL will win the All Star game for the first time in years next week.

I didn't listen to the whole thing then, Sudo, but have full intentions on doing so. I got enough of it to get the flavor and know I want to hear it all, when I have time. I wasn't trying to stir up a political fight. YOU were the one saying back when EVEN Hollywood was patriotic, and my point is that rah rah support any war is not the only definition of patriotism.
-
That was a great tape, Sudo. This ain't the friendly politics board, but I'm sure you understand that there are vast differances between WW2 and Iraq, and Viet Nam, at least in the minds of millions of patriotic Americans such as myself.

That was definately Ted Knight. Youll be happy to know George, that a Green Lantern film is kind of in the works. By that I mean it's been optioned and is at the fuzzy stage of development before it's officially 'green lit', which would be most appropriate. With CGI today, you can do anything, even a heretofore impossible character like Green Lantern.

Gary Burghoff-and whatever happened to him anyway

I think it's great that the Tigers and White Sox are so competitive. I always pull for the 'classic' teams that have been around for a century. I wish I could say the same for the Pirates. I was at Dodger Stadium last night and they were hopeless (and hapless-that most damning of baseball insults). Still, I just loved being at the park. I know I am most fortunate to live near a major league park, and thankfully can afford to indulge. It never gets old to enter the place and settle in with a Dodger Dog ( I hate to think how many of THOSE I've eaten !) . I could go to 80 games and not get bored, but I manage to limit it to 20-25, including a few treks to Angel Stadium. Really any ballpark is great. When I lived in Columbus , Ohio, I loved going to see the Clippers, the Yankees AAA minor league team, where they exhorted you to ring cowbells in the stands. And sometimes I take a walk after work and watch the local little league, it's all good. Heck, I still even PLAY now and then, or hit the batting cage.

aaaargh-I'm tech-ed out Nothing nostalgic about computers

Grady has been almost invisible so far. I'm not sure LA will take to him . Of course if the Dodgers win, it will be different. I think he's an ok manager that does well when he has the players, like most managers. He certainly doesn't add anything special, and you hope he doesn't screw up the pitching staff. All Dodger managers live in the shadow of Tommy Lasorda, who still sits in the owners box at most games and gets standing o's whenever he takes the field. It's even worse for Muellar than I thought. Now they're saying they should break his knee !!!! and let the cartilege re grow for 2 years. Oh well, he had a fine 1 month Dodger career. Going to the game tonight against the lowly Pirates. I don't know how I survive 6 months without baseball every year.
-
The jury is still out on Bill Muellar-but it doesn't look good sad to say. Right now they're doing more tests and evaluating, but the subject of retirement has come up. Nomar is amazing, and I still can't believe the Dodgers stumbled onto him. Besides hitting ropes all the time, he's making plays at first base that most veterans wouldn't. I'm digging him.
-
The Dodgers, almost by magic ( and a desperate need to fill holes left by injuries ) have put together an appealing team with a nice mixture of rookies and veterans that are palying like they mean it. Nomar is having an mvp style year, Kenny Lofton and J D Drew of all people, are producing, and the pitching is mostly solid. The biggest surprises are up from AAA players like catcher Russell Martin and left fielder Matt Kemp. Who knows if they can hold up, even in the ridiculously balanced NL west, but I think they will. I haven't seen a Dodger team this interesting since I've been here. I may become a fan yet.

The answer is... Before Timmy, Lassie was owned by a boy named Jeff, played by Tommy Rettig. He lived in the same farmhouse, but had a different family -a widowed mother and 'Gramps'. When he began to outgrow the role, Timmy and the family you're familiar with bought the farm, and Jeff gave Lassie to Timmy. Tommy Rettig passed away a few years ago, but Jon provost (Timmy) is alive and kinda looks the same only much older.

I can name that show in one whistle That's Timmy shouting Lassie, but another kid owned Lassie for years before Timmy came along. Who was he? No googling now.

oh right Captain Midnight It's hard to tell them apart Captain Video, Tom Corbett Space Cadet,Space Patrol, Captain Midnight had the decoder ring-as did Little Orphan Annie of all people of course it was all before our time-most of us are MUCH too young to have lived through it

Kathy, this is one that I know, but can't think of the name at the moment. I do know that I've seen episodes within the last year on video, but old age seems to creeping into the memory at the moment. If it hits me, I'll let you know. I will take a stab at Blackhawk-but I'm not swearing by it. and just reading back as I've been gone a few days, I will admit to loving John Steinbeck's work.
-
not just Chaney, but Burgess Meredith as George. The original is a better film, in my opinion. That can be said for most remakes.

Don't I know that it's hard to find time to read ! Reading IS fun-damental though. I used to be anti books on tape, but have found them to be an excellent way to get to books you wouldn't normally have time for. Especially since I'm in the rat race I always told myself I'd never be a part of. Nothing beats sitting down with a book though.
-
I was hoping to motivate people to read the book, oh well. Lenny kills Curly's wife. It's more complicated than that, but that's the result.
-
I thought 'Cars' was much better than I thought it would be. Most movies are predictable, especially these days. What I couldn't predict was the progression from an 'in your face' racing movie, to a gentle , lovely story, told in a credible, entertaining way, with characters that should not have worked, but somehow do.
-
Of Mice and Men Lennie is the big 'oaf', George is the 'smart' one I'd recommend the Steinbeck book, but most film adaptations are pretty good.

This is pure conjecture, and maye I'm just cynical, but it wouldn't surprise me if the sight of people sitting around praying in a 'clubhouse' got on Craig's nerves. All those people whining about their 'needs' when they should be acting on the Word, instead of being 'wusses'.
