  1. This is one hat I should know but can't put my finger on. I know I'll be slapping myself when I find out the answer. It's right on the tip of my muddled mind.
  2. was that 1939 tune about a guy and girl in love in nazi ,Germany? I know I know it though, and it's my 'head scratcher' for the day. Maybe you should have given us more than one minute.
  3. Here's hoping that all is well with David Ortiz. The season is winding down-I'm already feeling the impending gloom
  4. I agree with George, that it's George singing, though the entire arrangement is interestingly different
  5. Thanks for the concert report,Paw. That was good reading and is inspiring me to check out upcoming concerts. My last one was Jethro Tull a while back.
  6. That old woman was Agnes Moorehead-Endora from 'Bewitched' That was an interesting 'Twilight Zone', with no dialogue. The toy they used for the 'spaceman' was clunky though.
  7. I didn't really LIKE 'Sky King', (especially Penny), but always somehow watched it. It was sponsored by Nabisco, and I did like it when Sky King's plane turned into the Nabisco sign for some reason. The show was big on pushing spoon size Shredded Wheat (which was a nice change from the big clunky biscuit) and I liked the 3 spacemen who rode flying spoons on the Shredded Wheat commercial. They even gave away miniature spacemen in the box that would fit on the end of your spoon. All I remember about the show was Sky being a modern 'cowboy' in the sky, who had an annoying niece Penny, and endless flying scenes. Don't mean to be hard on Penny, but I was much more taken with 'Annie Oakley'.
  8. Where the Action Is-that was the Dave Clark 5 wasn't it? I remember buying a teen rag in '64 called 'Dave Clark5 vs the Beatles' I wonder who won?
  9. I wish I had a dollar for everyone going in the corps who asked me to be a spiritual partner. Every year, people I hardly knew would suddenly be my best friend. I used to wonder how in the world anyone could get corps money together that way. Most everyone I knew in the way were stuck in minimum wage jobs, with barely enough money to keep a roof over their head ( said roof housing 4 or 5 other people with lousy jobs). It was always stressed that being a spiritual partner should be above and beyond abundant sharing. Had to make sure HQ got the first cut. Anyone who had an actual career with decent money were the biggest targets, of course. I sponsored several people over the years, usually only 5 or 10 bucks a month, and that was not easy to do. I was happy to help someone who I knew well, and wanted to help, but it really got old ( and pointless if they knew how broke I was) to get hit up at every state function by struggling apprentice corps who I hardly knew.
  10. Shaun Green is having an ok year, but he hasn't been an impact player for a few years. He hit 49 home runs for the Dodgers when they first got him, which is amazing in Dodger Stadium, but his numbers went progressively lower the next couple of years. It almost got to be a given that he would kill a rally by grounding into a double play. He's done better for the Diamondbacks, and may be a good pick up for the Mets. He's a good guy and good player, that could have been better. When the steroid issue first went through the roof and people started looking at Bonds, Sosa and McGuires before and after pictures, LA was secure in knowing that Green could have never seen a steroid.
  11. Oh yeah Hullabaloo and Shindig! Hullabaloo was more of a top40 show, with lots of dancers and 'bubble gum' type performers. Shindig was much more involved with the real music. Performers from Dylan, to the Stones performing on a simple stage with a darkened audience. It had it's share of 'bubble gum' too, but was a remarkable venue for the performers that REALLY scared our parents. If there aren't dvd sets of those 2 shows already, there should be.
  12. I liked 'Where the Action is" more than American Bandstand, which always seemed to be kinda old hat and 'stuffy' for lack of a better word. Doing a dance show designed for the 50's into the 80's didn't always work-but I watched it whenever I was home on Saturday, so something kept me coming back. Oh right-the girls 'Where the Action Is' was more fun. I remember Paul Revere and the Raiders (with Mark Lindsay) being the 'regular' band, and often playing poolside with cavorting teens in bikinis. sigh The show basically moved bandstand outside, with more energy and fun. I'm sure I saw 'Happening' too-it may have been a follow up show to Where the Action Is. Dick Clark did sell me alot of Stri-Dex .
  13. that was some wild show, Tom. The star's career took quite a nosedive when he was caught doing bad things in a bad movie theater not what you'd want in a kid's show host
  14. Well, the Yankees just made it 5 in a row. It's hard to believe. Of course, I'm pleased, but have no desire to taunt mstar or anyone else. Hey, the Sox COULD take the next 4 they play with them ! I'm not one for zealous rooting anyway. Even at my most rabid fan period, I realized that I didn't accomplish anything personally, though it was nice to see my team win. Maybe I'm the most laid back baseball fan alive. I'll have been to at least 25 games this season between the Dodgers, and Angels, but I'm usually relaxed as can be at the ballpark. Maybe I'm just getting old. No one else will say it, so I will-Go Yanks
  15. why edit it? the retrojunk site is fun
  16. Thanks for the website referral, Kathy-retrojunk indeed. One of my favorite sites is newsfromme.com a site by Mark Evanier, who has a long career as a tv writer, producer, comic book writer, and general kibitzer with anyone or thing dealing with popular culture. I think most here would enjoy spending a little time browsing around his site
  17. paw's theme should send some on a quest for the answer
  18. you ARE quite the curmudgeon, George. I always liked that song, mainly because it DIDN'T fit the puppet show. To my 10 year old self, it was catchy and kinda cool. As vapid and sterile as you perceive the culture back then, I think today has it beat for vapidness by a mile. Thunderbirds, was a cut above their other shows, course they're still those puppets. Team America was made as a biting satire of the genre. I found it very funny in parts.
  19. not Supercar-but Supercar is from the same Gerry Anderson productions half of the title is in the picture I think it would be about time to play the song with the vocals, Sudo. I always thought it was an odd song for that show but always liked it now Thunderbirds-that show was really good
  20. It may have been a so so show-but rarely has any show matched the horror of the' Banana Splits'. think 'supermarionation'
  21. A later show-which was much better than so so was Thunderbirds by the same people. On further reflection-the show WAS pre beatles if you go by the Ed Sullivan debut meter, but not pre Beatles technically. Glad you're back, Sudo
  22. if this is the show I think it is, I'm in complete agreement with Sudo-a cool song for a so so show. it also may be pre-Beatles-but right on the cusp.
  23. if you weren't corps (or in a few rare cases, famous), you were at the bottom of the ladder. Not that I was looking to climb a ladder, but we all knew it was there. I was wow, advanced class grad, twig coordinator, state bookstore manager, PFAL class instructor twice, among other things. All I ever heard when in my home state was that if i was going to REALLY serve God, I'd go in the corps. When I moved to Ohio, and Lord help me St Marys for a year (long story), I was as invisible as one could be. I have never been lonelier in my life than when I lived next to way HQ.
  24. it's still dead, Jim when you're dead you're dead and just where is sudo?
  25. THANKS to all of you !!! I didn't even see this thread until Shellon called attention to it. I had a great birthday, and I really appreciate the good wishes from all the wonderful people here !
