  1. I'm running short of these things. Maybe I should watch some 'Deep Space 9's" for inspiration. This should be a piece of Gagh. "Computer, compute to the last digit, the value of pi."
  2. I'd agree that those episodes were 'dumber', but 'Requeim' was trying to be 'profound', and for me, doesn't even have the questionable entertainment value of the other episodes.
  3. "Requiem for Methusaleh" In my opinion, the worst epidsode of TOS. Kirk falls in love in 5 minutes, and fights this guy for her affections , while his starship is shrunk and 400 peoples lives are at stake. Kirk cares more about his libido than about the crisis. It may not be the first time, but it's by far the most insulting. I'll post a new one when I can.
  4. Took in my annual game at Angels Stadium last night. I'd go more often if not for the nightmarish drive on the 5. A 35 minute trip becomes an hour and a half , and it's a good thing I left early enough. Good game vs the Twins, a team I've always liked. The first 7 innings flew by in less than 2 hours, before the Angels rallied in the 8th, winning 4-3. Silva, pitching for the Twins had given up just 2 hits in 7 innings, before he was taken out. I don't understand this phobia against complete games at all. You have a guy shutting a team down, then pull him so your 'set up' man, and 'closer' can come in. I think when a pitcher is going good, don't mess with it. It usedto be that relievers were there to bail a struggling pitcher out. Now it's just part of the game to pull starters after 6 or 7 innings. The Angels were handed a gift when they took Silva out, and they jumped all over it. Angel Stadium is a fine park, especially now that the team isn't an afterthought, and it's fan base is loyal and into it. I had amazing seats right behind home plate, thanks to the companies season tickets that I was able to glom. I nearly had my head taken off on a Vladimer Guerroro foul. Just a high fly over the backstop that landed 6 inches from my head. It's surreal to have a ball coming at you, and I didn't think it was so close. This was a major league fly-really high, and came down really fast. All is fine with the Stadium, save for the unreal noise spewed over the loudspeakers to make sure you don't have a moments rest. My ears were ringing by the time the game started. I did get a laugh out of the 'rally monkey'. Those antics normally leave me cold, but in this case is was fitting as the Angels did 'rally' right when they started flashing it. They shwed a clip from Lord of the Rings when the hobbits were hiding under a tree. Instead of the Nazgul, the Rally Monkey appeared instead. Well, it made ME laugh. As the Twins changed pitchers again, They showed rally monkeys singing Bohemian Rapsody, then the banner, i'f you make noise, he will come'. I usually hate that kind of stuff, but for one night it worked. Good times. Now back to the slumping Dodgers vs the Astros at Chavez Ravine this week.
  5. Thanks George. I can even name everyone in the picture, that being the Justice League of America "back in the day". It did take a moment to find the Atom, though.
  6. Thanks for all the nice birthday wishes ! It really does mean alot, from people I care about, though have never MET !
  7. I hate to say "I told you so" about JD Drew..... I still think the Sox are the team to beat. Just as the Yankees should have been dead and gone, based on the first half, you can never discount the Red Sox, and they ARE still in first by 5 games.
  8. One must remember that Gagne hasn't been Gagne for a few years now. His comeback with Texas was coming along fine, but I don't think there was enough time to really evaluate him before they traded him to the Sox. What was once a sure thing is now a question mark. I can't imagine Gagne being comfortable as a set up man after the heights he reached with the Dodgers. I thought it a bad move on Boston's part, and so far it's worse than I imagined. In the meantime-hokey smokes, Bullwinkle, the Yankees are back in it !!!! Baseball is a looooooong season. But I wouldn't want it any other way.
  9. And leave us not forget that the Babe was a superb pitcher for the first several years of his career. Who knows how many home runs were not hit because he was sitting games out between starts. The image that many have of Babe Ruth is the older fat model, big belly and skinny legs. In his prime he was not bloated, though he always struggled with weight. Eating 15 hot dogs at a time was not unusual for him. That's as close to steroids as he ever got.
  10. Thanks, annam. I just noticed your comment. I should check in here more often.

  11. I'm really not looking to argue, but ... As much as I know there are sadistic characters, "almost all of them" is quite a stretch. The Snow White as adultress comment was meant as a joke, right ? Those were valid 'bloody' examples. And the gay comments were also meant to be a joke, I'm sure. I thought the first Shrek movie to be clever, and sometimes insightful, but I can think of any number of Disney films I'd rather a child watch than Shrek 3.
  12. The designated hitter rule in the American League began in 1973. At the time, they were desperate for more hitting, and most of the games big hitters were in the NL. It wasn't a good idea then, and is totally unnecessary now, especially since the AL is the dominant league. Most of us here are certainly old enough to remember pre DH days. There has never been a time when it was common for a pitcher to play other positions. The Babe was rare in that he could do it all. He was just too good a hitter to remain a pitcher.
  13. the Red Sox got Gagne. That seems really weird to me, but could be great for Boston, though the last thing Gagne wants is to be a set up man. I've never seen a team work with 2 top closers without something suffering. Since Gagne brought his 'game over' graphics and 'welcome to the jungle' theme to Texas from LA. I wonder if Fenway will now be playing that stuff when he comes in. Will that play in Boston? Not if he's just pitching the 8th inning for sure. Still, he's awesome when healthy, so maybe it'll work.
  14. just curious. Who are the gay, bloody and adultrous characters in Disney movies ? I can think of quite a few sadistic ones. I do think second hand smoke is different than gluttony. It really hurts my lungs to breathe in someone's cigarette smoke. I could care less what they're eating. I do think bars and restaurants should have the right to allow smoking though. I'd just avoid those places.
  15. Otto is Sgt Snorkel's dog in Beetle Bailey. if Bullet isn't Snuffy Smith's dog, I wouldn't know any other.
  16. I just realized they were in Stalag 13 not 17. Stalag 13 is 'funnier' Nothing like a funny concentration camp.
  17. I'm not necessarily disagreeing with the point, but just what ARE the 'evil to the core' messages in Disney films, and other 'subliminal messages' ? That's a pretty broad statement to take at face value. I had a nightmarish time quitting smoking 20 years ago. It's gotta be as bad as heroin, though I can only imagine.
  18. I guess you just posted to bust my chops then. That clue was too easy. Why not just throw in Stalag 17 ? Just kidding really. Haven't seen the Sudo much since he left the Nostalgia thread.
  19. I guess I gave it away after getting zero response on the first clues. I thought any old coot would have gotten them from those. Sudo got it. Next time I'll be as obscure as possible.
  20. "I could just scream" "What do you want ? what what what" Bye , bye, Captain, byeee." "Watch it Skip. Here comes Leadbottom." "Ooooh. Head for the hills Fuji".
  21. Smoking is limited just about everywhere in California, if not most of the United States. At Dodger Stadium, the designated smoking areas are outside the park. At least Disneyland has smoking sections scattered around. Personally , I'm grateful for it. I can't stand breathing in someones smoke. I quit 20 years ago, and still get nauseated around it. I don't consider smoking a 'basic right'. I'm also not sure how you can blame Disney for Lindsay Lohen's actions. It's an easy target though. As far as 'Gay Day' at Disneyland, it's not sponsored, advertised, or encouraged by Disney. It just exists.
  22. "I could just scream" "what do you want? what what what" "bye, bye, Captain, byeee"
  23. For someone who doesn't like the books, you sure have made some study of them ! Your 'congratulations' to those who liked the book seems a bit condescending. I'm sure that wasn't your intent, however.
  24. This was by far my favorite in the series. It sustained an 'anything can happen' feel throughout, and kept me turning pages when I should have been doing other stuff. That rarely happens these days. I am not the Potter scholar that others are, so maybe I didn't 'know better'. I just thought it a ripping good yarn.
