  1. I don't understand how TBS wound up with the NL championship series, while Fox has the AL. As much as we assume that the entire country has cable tv, TBS is hardly universal, and alot of people are not going to be able to watch the Phillies make it to the World Series. :) I wish you could get the HD there, Rocky. I'd be amazed if a million phone calls got it to you by the playoffs though. You may have to settle for crappy old regular TV for now. HD is stunning for sports. I sat and watched golf for a couple hours at a friend's house not long ago, just because it looked so good. Baseball in HD must be heaven.
  2. as 'fair and balanced' as Fox news. 'fair and balanced' means anything but in any context I've seen.
  3. There's no denying the internet is amazing beyond anything we could have dreamed of . Why would one not want what's available on it. It has never taken the place of reading a book for me though. It's great for 'factoids', obscure minutia (sic), and any number of practical, and fun things, but I would never read a 600 page book on a computer screen. There is nothing more relaxing or mentally stimulating than finding a good meaty book to get lost in. The book as a physical thing, holding it in your hands, turning the pages. I just can't get that from a computer.
  4. Happy Birthday Sudo ! Happy trails to you and Suda.
  5. I'll be at the last game at Dodger Stadium tomorrow. I'm already depressed. Last year the last game was festive, with the Dodgers going to the playoffs and Nomar hitting a grand slam in the ninth. This year it's not quite as festive. Maybe I'll win one of their car giveaways. Yeah, maybe.
  6. maybe I'd think almost blowing a 14 1/2 game lead would be enough of a wake up call. the playoffs are "a whole new ball game". After the first pitch against the Angels, whatever went before is ancient history. But congrats to the Sox . I've never said they aren't an excellent team-even with the Dodgers castoffs-Drew, Lugo, and Gagne
  7. big deal-both teams are in the playoffs
  8. That the Yankees made the playoffs is quite an achievement. It does make it e asier to give congrats to the Bosox . I'm glad to see Colorado gone. Though I am intrigued by what a World Series in Denver would look like. Everyone in heavy coats but Bud Selig , who's raving about how comfortable it is. I'm enjoying the Phillies run. If the Sox win the AL, that's the team I'd like to see in the NL. The Nation has nothing on Phillie fan, and the clash of worlds would be 'epic'. I may be one of the few who could care less about the Cubs. Nice ballpark, historically dull team.
  9. I was at Dodger Stadium the night Bradley went ballistic in the outfield. He was always complaining while with the Dodgers, and just lost it that night when a fan threw a water bottle on the field. He took the bottle, slammed it into the stands, then started unbuttoning his shirt as he screamed and was restrained. He then took about 5 minutes strolling to the dugout among the jeers. It was more entertaining than most Dodger baseball that year, but was unfortunately true to form.
  10. I'm only enjoying Dodger baseball for the "love of the game" at this point. There is an amazing amount of sniping and finger pointing in the Dodger clubhouse these days. Grady Little grudgingly takes 'responsibility' for not being sensitive to the 'generation gap' between the young players, and the 'dinosaurs' like Jeff Kent. For the first time in forever, the front office is thinking that maybe they can trade one or two of their vaunted youth, for an impact type player in his prime-whoever THAT may be. In other words, James Loney is untouchable, Matt Kemp is toast. Unless the wheels come completely off the Yankee bus, it looks like they'll face Cleveland, and the Sox and Angels will meet in the first round. The Yankees have to be glad they don't have to play the Angels first, but they better not get comfortable with the Indians. Oddly, every AL team in the playoffs are teams that I've liked at one time or another. Contrary to what I'm sure Mstar thinks, I grew up liking the Red Sox as well as the Yankees, though my loyalties were with the Yanks. I didn't know I wasn't supposed to like both teams, just a naive kid. If the Yankees don't win this year, I'm fine with whoever, but the Indians would be nice. I haven't given the NL much thought yet. I'll be at Dodger Stadium for the last game of the season-Fan Appreciation Day-and well they should appreciate fans that come out in droves regardless of how bad the team is.
  11. congrats to the Angels ! I'm still amazed they're that good-but they are
  12. sounds like the sort of endless banter on 'Designing Women'-as they sat around in some sort of business I never quite figured out. Oh-I guess they were 'designers'
  13. Koufax did refuse to pitch in the world series, for some day or another.
  14. Shawn Greene never plays on Yom Kippur-sometimes to controversy, back when he was a 'force' on the Dodgers.
  15. I'd say that fans of all teams take 'lots of forms'-not just 'the nations' Just another reminder that there is nothing 'special' about Sox fans, than other fans.
  16. They also have to get by the Angels-always ignored until you have to play them.
  17. That must have been ME who gave the Yankees up for dead. I've rarely seen a team play as bad as they did in the first half. I grudgingly have to admit that Arod kept them alive back then, and earned the mvp for real this time. While nothing is settled yet, I'm starting to look ahead to the playoffs a little. I wish someone could explain the Angels to me, and how they can possibly have about the best record in baseball. Before the season , it was thought they would tank this year, after not getting another big bat. Their pitching, while solid, is not fear inducing-until you look at the results. They just always manage to win, and they consistantly destroy the Yankees. Could be another series in Anaheim this year. I have no idea who to pick in the NL. I'd love to see the Phillies squeak into the playoffs and make a run. There's noone in the west or central that are sure things. Even the Brewers are still alive. There's something about a Milwaukee-Cleveland World Series that appeals to me-though not to the television execs, I'm sure.
  18. I'll just say that during my twi years, it was firmly 'less than 20000 dollars', and is thankfully better than that today.
  19. After dropping 2 in Colorado, it looks like the Dodgers are just about done, and what else is new ? Fine young talent, excellent pitching, but an aversion to going after 'impact' players keeps them from getting to the next level. They had Vlad Guerraro in their pocket a couple years ago, but wouldn't make the move. He went to the Angels, who are coasting to the playoffs, largely because of Vlad. The Dodgers know they'll get over 3 million fans every year if they put cub scouts out there. The 'youth movement' has been going on since I started going to games regularly there in '95. They have some fine young players, Martin, Loney, Ethier, but they need a couple big bats with experience. Is that the Yankees I see 2 1/2 back all of a sudden ? That's a tall order this stage in the season, but weren't they given up for dead 2 months ago? I'm afraid to say more since feathers are easily ruffled in here between those 2 teams, and I admit mine were ruffled by outrageous characterizations about my character as a Yankee fan . Even if it wasn't meant personally, I can only imagine the response if the same charges were leveled the other way. It looks like we're headed to another lovely round of playoffs again though. I guess I've got 1 more trip to Dodger Stadium left this year. Missing it already. Maybe I should sit in the 'all you can eat' section in right field and gorge myself on Dodger Dogs, until I can't stand the sight of them.
  20. Boy, the 'dislike' is really spewing. I'm SO glad I'm out of that hellhole that is New England and New York. If that's your idea of 'fun' then you can have it. I'm still getting used to being thought of as untrustworthy, and someone who needs to have 'an eye' on, for being a Yankee fan.
  21. On further thought-if Duncan did that he's a complete dunce, and the kid and his family are owed an apology. In my cynical old age, there's a part of me that wonders if someone didn't tamper with the autograph, though I doubt it. Of course, this poor kid gets to listen to 'Yankees Suck' chanted all game long, just as "Red Sox Suck" is serenaded in the Bronx. I'm so glad to be away from all that. I cringe whenever I hear that at Dodger Stadium, usually for the Giants. I'm sure that kid has heard 'suck' and probably uses 'suck' 10 times a day, which certainly doesn't excuse the 'autograph'. It's just a sick culture we live in, and good ol Shelley Duncan is probably not much more than a kid himself , used to hearing and using the term 'suck' his whole life. Just more fuel for the feud fire, and for the righteous Red Sox fan to blame the Yankees, their fans, and New York for one yahoo .
  22. Yankees win. Yeah!! I luv it !! Of course they're still fighting for their playoff hope life, so I'm only 'luving' it so much. yeah Shelley Duncan-whoever that is, is a jerk. Of course Yankees and Yankee fans are untrustworthy and criminals as I've been informed. I wonder if Manny ever did something like that, and I'm not saying he would, if it would be excused as 'Manny being Manny".
  23. Actually, the Sox lead was 14 1/2. I still don't think the Yankees will win the division, but they amazingly have a good shot at the wild card. After the first half of the season, they should have been dead. I am , as always, rooting for the Yankees.
  24. It all comes down to this. If your team wins , you feel good. If they lose, you feel bad. After a few minutes you go on with your life, as it really doesn't (shouldn't ?) affect your life at all. I was able to 'feel good' for a few minutes last night. Was at Dodger Stadium for a festive romping of the Dbacks. It is rare to see the Dodgers put together 4 run innings. I was more than impressed with the kid from Arizona, Bonaficio, who led off the game with a single up the middle, and stretched it into a double. I nearly choked on my Dodger Dog as he rounded first and just kept going. Meanwhile, I'm checking my eyes as the scoreboard tells me the Yankees , who were down 7-2, came back to win in Fenway. So, I was able to feel good last night. Of course , today is another day, and I might not feel so good today.
