  1. Not Amok Time- cant conjure another quote at the moment. Food tossing is involved, though.
  2. This would be 'The Immunity Syndrome"- the giant amoeba that wipes out a ship full of vulcans. Take this episode, mix it with 'the Doomsday Machine", and 'Nomad" and you've got the Star Trek 1, and vger. Egad. I have to have new quotes now? I ran out long ago, but we'll see . how about some classic Trek sexism- "The women on your planet are logical. That's the only planet in the galaxy that can make that claim."
  3. The only team batting pitchers 8th is the Cardinals. Tony LaRussa has done it before, and is trying it again. I'm not a mind reader, but his logic may be that having a real hitter up ninth sets up the lead off man , who usually only bats lead off once, but should be great at moving runners over. Enjoy the late inning homers. Those are the fun times, and make up for the inevitable down times. Baseball just ain't built for success all the time. And still no Tom Strange. Hope you're ok wherever you are.
  4. "WE gotta get out of this place-if it's the last thing we ever do" new one- "I met her in a club, down in old soho"
  5. That didn't take long-with a nifty video no less.
  6. Love Lies Bleeding-Elton John. Gotta get ready for work, so I don't have one handy. I'll get back as soon as I can, or anyone is welcome to jump in.
  7. I'll make a point of staying off the George W. Bush Highway.
  8. I recall there was much 'encouragement' for everyone to spend the first 30 minutes (or was it hour?) every day reading the word. I forget if it was vpw, or craig who said we were 'wasting our life' if we didn't. I also recall vpw being asked if he started his day that way, and his response that he refuses to be 'put in a box', which I took as a 'no'. Of course , that 'box' was just fine for everyone else.
  9. UnObama-! Don't give them any ideas ! That particular brand of thought over there reminds me of many of the way corps I knew. I'm so glad I don't have to listen to it, or pretend to be okay with it. I don't seriously look at how teams are doing until a month or two goes by. It's a looong season, and a team can get hot or cold in April as easily as in July. And where the heck is Tom Strange anyhow ?
  10. I bet you 'Heard it through the Grapevine' "Well no one told me about her"
  11. The Dodgers have been doing father and son catch on the field for years, so it's not the pr guy's innovation. I noticed last year that they made fathers and sons catch with basically nerf balls. No comment. The Tigers will turn it around at some point, but clearly they're pressing and in one of those nightmare zones that even the best teams get into.
  12. That's great about Buckner. Would they have been so forgiving without a championship or two under their belt ? Still, it's nice. The Boston pr guy now in LA has made his first major blunder. Ever since Dodger Stadium opened, fans(mostly kids) would line up in the stands, near the dugouts while the players signed balls and stuff before the game. Fans this season are being stopped and told they're not allowed in the expensive box seat area near the dugouts. The only fans getting signed balls now are the rich fat cats and their kids. This was apparently the Boston pr guy's doing. At least he's taking 'credit' for it. His answer is that they have a new area in center field open before the game so fans can stand and hope for batting practice ball hit to them. Pr guy says that's the new area for autograph signing, though a Dodger player has yet to bother with it. Pr guy says his answer was 'Solomon like'. The Orioles are 5-1. Wonder if they're printing playoff tickets in Baltimore yet.
  13. Break up the Royals ! Those Tigers sure are bums ! The start of the season is always filled with surprises and unmet expectations. Baseball is all about the long haul, and the proper order of things is usually the end result.Except when it isn't. I still don't believe the incredible run by the Rockies at the end of last year. Don't look for a repeat performance. I follow the book of Yogi when it comes to predictions.

  15. The late , great, Warren Zevon-"Lawyers, Guns, and Money" "Oh' it's so funny seeing you after so long, girl"
  16. I found myself living in St Marys of all places in 84-85. The isolation of not being on staff or corps is another story, but I did find myself eating at hq now and then. Most of it is a blur, but I recall really liking the fried chicken. One night I was driving around with Mark Fr***cz*k who was on security detail. We strolled through the kitchen and were given some chicken cordon bleus being served for some function that night. They were remarkably good, and I knew there was no way the staff and corps were getting them. There must have been some special gathering of upper crust leaders. Maybe they were kissing up to someone with a lot of money. That was some good eating though.
  17. If she can hit 50 home runs a year, sign her up. That was a strange story. Do the hawks know it's time to leave ? And if not, who's going to tell them? Went to Dodger Stadium the other night, and I've never appreciated it so much as after a night at the Coliseum. Had a rain delay in the 5th, which is rare at a park that's only had 17 rainouts since 1962. I can recall almost that many in one season at Yankee Stadium. It was comical watching the ground crew negotiate the tarp. They clearly had not practiced much. Baseball is back. About time.
  18. mstar-I've got photos, but don't have the know how to post them here. However, if you pm me your email address, I can send some to you and you can post them here if you like. Sorry I'm so brain dead, but that's the limit of my current skills. I just found out that shuttle from Dodger Stadium got so backed up people didn't get there until after 8 pm. Now I'm glad I caught it early, and sat through 2 hours of batting practice.
  19. I'm still bleary eyed, but here goes. I'm glad I was there. I also can't wait to get back to Dodger Stadium. Can't believe the Dodgers played with that configuration for 4 years (though left field was closer than it was back then due to more seats). I took the shuttle from Dodger Stadium-and more about that later. Got there about 4:30, and found there really wasn't much reason to arrive early.I enjoyed a lot of batting practice. The best part was watching Manny taking grounders at shortstop ! I guess he figured shortstop/left field-what's the difference ? The best pre game ceremony was a plaque going in the Coliseum honoring Vin Scully, who got the biggest ovation of the night. Old time Dodgers were brought out between innings, with the Duke getting the biggest hand. Oddly, I don't recall seeing Sandy Koufax, and I guess Orel Hershiser is busy with I forget what team he's with now. It was nice seeing Torre and Lasorda kibitzing. Joe had Tommy bring the line up card to home plate, and it looks like Tommy is going to be more active this year than he has of late. He managed the Dodgers 'split squad' while Torre went to China. That was one weird game, and didn't feel 'right' from beginning to end. With Wakefields knuckleball knuckling, the Dodgers couldn't get the ball out of the infield. The Dodgers set up with 5 infielders all night, while the Sox shifted to almost 2 centerfielders, leaving most of 'left field' vacant. There were some good plays, 2 of which mstar noted, the almost triple play, and Russel Martin's cannon. Martin is for real. But the game was just weird. I can't wait to cleanse myself at Dodger Stadium on Wednesday. The crowd was boisterous and drunk. I think starting the fun at noon gave too many people time to get tanked by gametime. It was as close to sitting in an east coast ballpark as I've seen out here. Of course there were Sox fans, though not as many as you would think. This night was really about the hard core Dodger fans. I sat near a couple of old timers and heard lots of reminiscing about the early years, which was just fine. We left in the 8th inning to catch the shuttle back. It was a breeze when we left Dodger Stadium to get there, and were unprepared for the nightmare ahead. The shuttle line extended several city blocks, winding back to the Coliseum-and this was before the game was even over. It was going to take hours-I thought at least 3-to get the shuttle, and noone in line was happy about that, as many had been there 6 hours or more already. I tremembered we had seen my friend's son in law earlier and called him to check his status. He and his dad were almost at the fron of the line, and I told him to hang on till we got there, which required a mad dash through the line ,and finding them in the dark. We got there just as they were getting on a bus and were able to glom onto them. I cannot overstate the relief and joy of being on that bus. I took pictures, but I was so high up, I don't know if there's anything noteworthy. I can't recall ever seeing so many people in one place. It was one time that the wave was actually entertaining. The Sox on the bench even joined in. I thought that was pretty cool. I am SO looking forward to real baseball.
  20. I'm not crazy about the 115000 , but I gotta go. I've decided to do the Dodger Stadium shuttle, rather than wander around USC searching for my car tonight. It will probably take hours to catch the shuttle back to my car, but seems like the sanest way to go. Festivities start at noon! I don't need that much celebrating, so I won't be there quite that early. This is fun, but I'm REALLY looking forward to being at Dodger Stadium on Wednesday where it's nice and homey, and the regular season is under way.
  21. Thanks for the parking info. I'll probably park at one of the USC lots, and pray not to get mugged on the way back to the car. Tons of old timers will be out-Wally Moon has even agreed to take a few swings for a 'Moonshot'.
