Dan, you and I were watching the same TV stations . New York TV rocked in the early 60's. I grew up in Southern Connecticut. One movie from that list I saw at the theater was the Tingler. They had a gimmick at certain theaters, where some people would receive an electric shock when the Tingler supposedly got loose in the theater. At that point the audience was directed to scream to drive it away. The rumor in our neighborhood was that they set Tinglers loose, and my friends brought slingshots , hoping to get a shot at it. I may have been jaded early, but I figured out that even if some places set Tinglers loose, there was no way our crappy Stratford Theater was going to have that luxury. (That Stratford Theater was where young Stephen King sat through Saturday matinees of horror and sci fi movies, by the way). There was one genuine scare in the Tingler. It was a black and white film, but for one brief moment , there was a bathtub filled with deep, red blood, with a bloody red arm rising out of the tub. THAT impressed this 8 year old.

It's your birthday, Mstar? Well, Happy Birthday indeed !! I can't share your birthday wish for another Sox World Series, but I hope everything else you want comes to pass.

I know, but you've been saying that the last several times you've posted. Not trying to be critical, just don't see the need. well, you haven't noted it THAT often, so I'm wrong-I know you're nostalgic for the days when it was more active here-which I certainly understand

That's Jakob Dylan of the Wallflowers, son of Bob Dylan, and yes he's good. Sudo, you're starting to sound a tad whiny about the number of people coming here. I say those that are interested will see it, and it's not about the numbers.

I'm not sure how to define happiness. I was a lot of things during the period of time when I thought involvement in the way was doing me good, but I don't recall many times when I wasn't walking on eggshells lest I incur the wrath of some leader. I doubt that a state of contentment or 'happiness' ever existed for me.

I almost forgot. The pre game also featured Pamela Anderson prancing around as a Malibu little league 'mom'. They didn't make moms like that when I was in little league.

That's great mstar. Was at Dodger Stadium last night against the Astros, but the Dodgers didn't show up, having forgotten how to score a run in the last few games. I can enjoy any game just being there. It's more exciting when the home team is doing well, and pulls off some timely hitting and defense. Not only is the game better, but the crowd energy is fun. In a game like last night, it seemed like 45000 people milling around, waiting for something to happen. The ever present LA beachballs were out in force, and people started to leave even earlier than usual. Wait-they did get excited over something. I've never heard such booing in Dodger Stadium, as greets Andruw Jones when he steps in to bat. He's raised his average to .174, but went below that by striking out twice and getting on, on an error. He strikes out bad, too. Just waving at pitches. My only question is how he's managed to hit .170. I haven't seen him get a hit all year.

For the 'record'-'The End of the World" was originally by Herman's Hermits. Karen Carpenter is a much better singer though. -
The memory of going from Little League to the 'big field' still gives me chills. Suddenly, the distance between bases seemed forever, and throwing across the infield to first became an effort. It also felt like being in the 'big leagues', with few rocks and divots in the dirt, and nicely mowed grass. I love going to Little League games (as well as high school-do the still have pony and Babe Ruth leagues?).

Well, the Dodgers are playing like they've finally come together, winning 9 of 10. I'll leave it to the experts as to how much credit Joe Torre can take for it. He has come up with innovative ideas like playing Russell Martin at 3rd on the rare days he needs a 'rest' from catching. Speaking of 3rd, Nomar came off the dl for about 2 days before going back on. In one of those nice surprise call up from the minors, Blake DeWitt is playing himself onto the team. At the moment, it looks like the Yankees should have traded for Santana after all, which just goes to show what a crap shoot baseball is. They're wrong for always trading away youth, and they're wrong for keeping them. At least Joba is living up to expectations. I guess I have to comment on the psycho Yankee fan who ran down the Sox fan. It just shows me how sick the whole 'fan' thing can become-especially with alcohol involved. I doubt it will stop any of the 'taunting' and 'retaliation' though. I'm not sure when the term " Yankees, Sox, whoever SUCK" became the universal insult, but I hear it everywhere I go. Easiest way to get someone's goat, especially a drunken psycho. I contend that if you have a busy, active life, you won't be so prone to over emphasize the 'importance' of your team winning a ball game. People that hang out in bars and get drunk probably aren't in that category.

I'm thrilled to be offered the opportunity to be screened for acceptability before I can go to church. I wouldn't want to be part of the riff-raff.

That sounds like an important and interesting book, that I plan on reading, but how on earth did she come up with that 1 in 25 is a sociopath statistic-especially if they're hidden ?

This is now a song I don't remember from 8 lines. -
I don't have a clue, and I know I haven't seen many shows with terms like 'heat sucking horn dogs'-whatever that means.

The Angels are hit with the flu. Maybe they caught it from the Sox. I'm sick and optimistic about Yankee Stadium at the same time. I grew up with Yankee Stadium, loving it and it's history. I hated the 70's renovation. They managed to remove much of it's charm, in my opinion. Still, it was Yankee Stadium. From what I've seen of the new park, they've learned by their mistakes. Unless I'm mistaken, the field is configured the same, down to the same direction, only across the street. Other features look more like Yankee Stadium than the existing one. It will still be a sad day come the last game-which I hope is deep into the post season. At least they're not moving to the Meadowlands, as George used to threaten. THAT would have been criminal.

that's great, mstar ! I'm envious , but happy for you.

I checked a couple places for quotes-but that episode doesn't seem to be very quote worthy. Usually, I've tried to quote lines that resonate in my memory. Kind of like the thread of first lines of songs.Lines that once you hear them, take you to that episode in your head. But there are no 'rules' and I've also looked up quotes to quote.

Since I'm not going to be around for awhile, and can't think of another quote, I'll end the suspense and reveal that it's "Elaan of Troyis"-an episode I've slept through many times.

Actually, that book excerpt is intriguing, and I think I'll be buying it when it comes out. I have to admit I'm a little burned out on every book coming from a Yankee or Red Sox fan. Growing up in Connecticut it really did seem like baseball didn't matter west of Philadelphia, and even here in LA the bulk of the baseball books are Yankee-Sox centric. Enough already. What's it like growing up with the Twins and Harmon Killebrew ?

That was a nice piece. It reminds me of growing up listening to Yankee games (a team the writer almost goes out of his way not to mention). I'm not close enough to the day to day to have an opinion on Joe G yet. I know when you win you look good, and when you lose you look bad. Torre is still feeling his way out here, and would be the first to tell you that. I'm on the road for a week, so good luck hunting down Tom Strange.
