  1. I probably won't be able to make it to Yankee Stadium this year, much as I would have loved to say good bye. I'm incredibly sad, yet optimistic about the new stadium. As I've said, I've never been a fan of the 70's renovation, and I look forward to Yankee Stadium looking like Yankee Stadium again. Still...... My first trip to Yankee Stadium when I was 11 was like going to Oz, and it's hard to think the place I grew up with is going going gone. I know the Sox aren't rebuilding and are still the team to beat. I was talking mainly about the frustrations of staying on top. It just isn't the same as watching a team develop, but as you said, it all balances out in the end. The Rays are a nice monkey wrench thrown into the AL East. Now if only the Orioles could regain some long lost luster.
  2. I'm liking the Rays. There are worse things could happen, than seeing them steal the division from the big boys. Mstar, you may be getting a taste of what life at the top is like. One thing I've never liked about being a Yankee fan is that there's no tolerance for rebuilding. The pressure to win every year is relentless. From what I've seen so far from Sox fans, they're proving to not be much different. Watching your team deal with the inevitable pitfalls and cracks in the armor is really not as much fun as the process of a team coming together from the bottom. I've been watching the Dodgers come from the bottom for years now. A little success wouldn't hurt about now. Death threats ??!!! Omigawd.
  3. That was one strange game. I noticed when they scored the run, that they still hadn't any hits, but I didn't think it would hold up. Kemp got on by a dribbler down the first base line, that the pitcher bobbled picking up. While stealing second, the throw sailed into the outfield sending him to third. The sacrifice fly was to the warning track in right. What may not be recorded is the amazing throw Vlad Guerrero made to the plate, almost throwing the runner out. The umpire had one of the most generous strike zones I've ever seen, which may account for the speed of the game. Several players seemed shocked to be called out on pitches that looked way outside and high even up in the loge where I sat (the fans always have a better view of the pitch than the ump, right?) Billingsley played to the zone, and kept hammering the outside (or inside to lefties) part of the plate. A key moment late in the game was Hunter waving at one of those pitches, after being called out on strikes by it earlier in the game. He knew he couldn't assume it would be a ball and struck out in a key situation. I guess I can always say I was there. It was an exciting game with a lot going on while noone was hitting on either side.
  4. I see it,know it, and I'll let someone else name it.
  5. I don't know where the Yankees were this time last season, but I know it wasn't any good. I still don't know how they made the playoffs. This year is just as big a mystery. You're right-the season goes too fast, and the winter way too slow. I'm off to see the Angels at Dodger Stadium tonight. It's really not as cut throat as Mets-Yankees, but still fun to see the better LA team play the Dodgers. The Angels were so bad for so long, that it's hard for die hard LA fans to get behind them. With teams so much is perception. The Dodgers are still regarded as a class organization, even though they've been mediocre at best for 20 years. The Yankees can go 15 years without being in the series (like in the 80's-early 90's), but when they do get there people complain that they're 'always' there. I like the Angels. If I lived closer, I'd go to a lot more games. I like Dodger Stadium more than the team, and certainly can't complain about the 15 minute drive there.
  6. nope "If you're down and confused and you don't remember, who you're talking to"
  7. "after the Gold Rush'-Neil Young "If you're down and confused"
  8. Cubs fans will figure out what to do the same way Sox fans have. They'll realize that the next season arrives too soon, and they'll want another one. I'm not sure why the White Sox fans weren't accorded the same long suffering status that Cubs fans get. They only had 80 plus years instead of 100 between championships, and when they won the series you hardly heard a word about the fans. Guess their press agent wasn't as good. Cubs fans like to declare they're 'special', the way Bosox fans do. I'm pretty convinced the ballparks have a lot to do with it. Last I looked, the Houston Astros have never been in the world series, and I'm sure there are grandparents who have been Stro's fans their whole lives. Maybe the Astrodome was never sexy enough.
  9. when it came to way prod-I always liked Brian Bliss. But that's another topic.
  10. It's about 110 degrees out here, and I'm heading to Dodger Stadium on Sunday, for a rare as hens teeth game against the Indians. I'm not expecting the fervor of transplanted Cleveland fans, like when the Cubs were here, but would like to see some Indians gear displayed. Here's hoping the temperature has dropped to a balmy 95 by then. At least I'll be in the shade in the loge.
  11. have to agree-her 'Precious Lord' is indeed wonderful. She looked ridiculous in that cheerleading outfit, though.
  12. It's almost mid season. The Dodgers still need help-like someone who can hit. The Angels look like they're going to win the division. The Red Sox are playing as well as expected-even with the big guys down-looks like JD Drew finally woke up I gave the Yankees up for dead again, and suddenly they're right in it-why they're awful every April and May is a mystery The Rays are for real and that's good for baseball, and bad for the Yanks and Sox-I'm liking the Rays proposed new stadium, with the 'sail' covering The other color Sox are in first-I think the Tigers may still catch them As usual, the AL is trouncing the NL in interleague play-who'd a thunk it once upon a time I'd muse more, but gotta get to work
  13. I wouldn't know, but would guess that there was a proper code of conduct for everything connected to SNS. I do recall Wierwille going ballistic during advanced class '79, when one of the camera guys, or C*ulter behind the scenes, missed a shot. He tore C*ulter a new one, in one of those rants he did so well, and LCM perfected. One of my tech friends later told me he imagined Joe in the back room, looking at multiple images of vp screaming at him.
  14. In my fuzzy memory, I don't think it was ever 'officially' made known to the masses, though the vast majority knew about it. It's difficult to keep an exploding volcano secret. I found out about it at the roa in '86. That was right after it was revealed to the corps and they were trying to make it 'business as usual', with a 'getting back to basics' theme. Some friends in the corps told me what was up in whispers. I'd guess there was a lot of that taking place. From there the word spread pretty quickly. The twigs went back to studying 'the blue book', many people slowly discovered what was really going on, and the 'leadership' scrambled to keep the little people sedate and in the dark. Didn't work.
  15. True, there weren't many corps grads then-still, '75 seems a little late in the game for a state to have none-but of course the numbers are what they are.
  16. It could be nothing but, Car 54. (well, it could be 'It's About Time'-a painfully bad one season wonder that also starred Joe E Ross-but car 54 it is) You're up, George.
  17. Good idea. I rarely indulge in reading message boards. Don't know what came over me. Can't avoid the crazed fans at the park though. The last Dodger game with the Cubs was filled with rabid Cub fan literally pointing their finger in the nearest Dodger fans face and cackling every time a Cub got a hit or a run. I don't care to have fingers pointed in my face. I got enough of that in the way.
  18. I find it interesting that when I got roped in back in '75, there were NO Corps in Connecticut. Bruce Mah*ne was running the state, and had not entered the corps as yet.The way corps was just a rumor to me. In retrospect, it's too bad they didn't 'shut down' the state in time to keep me from getting involved. They somehow managed to have quite a 'work' going in Ct and the Univ of Bridgeport, without the almighty corps there to keep it in line. It was probably the only time I didn't feel the oppressive weight of the organization on a daily basis.
  19. Actually, I'm already sorry I posted it, but I won't delete it. Maybe I should find another interest.
  20. I made the huge mistake of reading some Yankee and Red Sox message boards over the weekend. Based on what I read, I could only conclude that Sox fans are as insufferable as they always accuse Yankee fans of being. Of course, people that spend time posting on message boards aren't always 'normal' (unlike all of us who post on this message board). Sports fandom fascinates me. You'd think the fans accomplished something themselves the way they chide everyone else.Maybe it's one way of dealing with failures in their own lives that make them transfer the success of others as their own. (hey I WATCHED them play, and I ROOT for them, so I won). The fights that break out(to say nothing of the deaths)due to rooting for a team nauseate me. Big deal-the team you like just won a game. I really don't give a crap. I know, I know. I'm missing the bigger picture, the identification, the community. I know all about it. I grew up as impassioned a fan as you will find. Somewhere along the line I put it in perspective , and I know I'll be sorry I wrote this after the responses come in, but I really got sick reading those message boards, and wondering what's wrong with those people?
  21. ok-since I'm pressed for time, I'll make it real simple. "ooh-ooh'
  22. If it is Animaniacs, they lifted the Superman joke verbatim from I Love Lucy. Most of those quotes are certainly not from Lucy, though. I worked on Animaniacs for a year, yet have no idea if that's the show. I wonder what that means ?
  23. I no like instant replay for baseball. I found this an interesting stat about one of my favorite players. After hitting a game winning home run in Houston last night, I read that Jeter leads the world in interleague hits with 259. Not exactly up there in impact with home runs, or rbi, but I was taken aback a bit with the realization that these interleague games have been around long enough to compile that many hits. That's a season and a half of hits for many good players. My other current favorite players are spread out a little, starting with Torii Hunter, who I can't wait to see at Dodger Stadium in 2 weeks. I'll be getting down to Anaheim for a few games before the season's over, but this will be my first look at the Angels this year-who are doing quite well by the way.
