Of course us mere mortals that weren't corps but knew the Strauhals can't go there.

Looks like the Sox are going to pick up Brad Penny. If he's healthy, that's the steal of the year. I'll never understand how teams pay players millions to sit on the dl, only to let them go when they're presumably healthy. I also don't understand players who take millions sitting on the bench, only to bolt for free agency at the first opportunity. I've been riddled with guilt over having to take a 2 week medical leave from work lately, with a huge part of me needing to get back in and work twice as hard. Maybe I'm over reacting, but I feel obligated to make up for lost time, and to show appreciation to the company.

I've said all along that the Yankees of the 90's are my favorite team, and were put together smartly, and wonderfully. I also agree that the Yankees throw a lot of money after the wrong players, and it more often than not works against them. In THIS case, I can't fault them for getting Teixiera, for the reasons I've already talked about. If the Sox had landed Tiex you'd be dancing right now. I can only speak for myself, but I've never had that sense of 'entitlement', that people love to level at Yankee fans. Most of my life has been living with the downside of the Yankees (the 60's collapse, the awful 80's, the latest downturn).I've been fortunate to have more than my share of championships, but even then it's been more of a sense of amazement they got that far, than 'entitlement'. I'm far from Yankee myopic , though I don't need to defend myself about that, or for being a Yankee fan.

That may be true, we'll see what this year brings. I'm not sure why Tiex signing with the Sox would have been a great move, but signing with the Yankees is a sign of a money-grubbing, title grabbing, system not working. No, I am sure-it's whether you're a Sox or Yankee fan's perspective. The reality is that the Yankees needed him more than the Sox, by filling a badly needed hole in their infield, and the bonus of keeping the Sox from pulling far away from them. I agree that the Yankees have made bad decisions, and will probably make more. I don't see gettingTiex, Sabathia, and Burnett evidence of banging their heads against a wall. (Now Arod and Giambi is another story). They don't have "nothing to show for it", if they can afford to spend like that. If winning world series is the measuring stick, than most teams are billions in the hole with "nothing to show for it". But it's the Yankees , who "haven't won in 8 years". Omigod. They're damned if they do, and damned if they don't.

My sarcasm wasn't showing, apparently. No way is the union , or the players going to try to stop this cash cow, I'm afraid. Next time I'll add a face <_<

Everyone remembers Shemp, Rumrunner-though some Curly purists don't give him the respect he deserves. There were also 6 Stooges-you left out Joe Besser, and Joe DeRita-though their contributions were certainly debatable.

I guess I'm lucky. I have access to a number of season ticket seats in the loge at Dodger Stadium, between home and first, for a 'measly' 55 bucks a seat. Since I prefer the loge to field level, it couldn't be better. It's affordable when I'm working, which I'm always keeping my fingers crossed about. I've long thought the whole structure of free agency and salaries in baseball was wrong. I'm certain the players union agrees with me and we'll soon see salary caps in place. The money the Yankees spent is insane. I still ask the question what should they have done differently to get these players, and to compete with the other teams offering the same kind of money. Money everywhere is insane. It seems that companies and corporations throw untold millions around on a daily basis while most of us are hoping to stay warm this winter, hold onto our homes, and hopefully our jobs.

let's say the Yankees decided, hey, we've got our share-let Tiexiera go to the Sox. I suppose that would take some heat off-as well as handing the pennant to them. The whole system is whacked-but I really can't fault them for filling a huge need, while keeping their biggest rivals from getting a whole lot stronger- Teix was getting his 160 mill plus somewhere.

"Yogi's First Christmas" is a very nice movie. Most of those H-B movies that throw all the characters in, don't work at all for me, but this one does. I last saw it years ago, and only caught the first 15 minutes when it was aired last week. We had to be somewhere, and my wife was almost going to change the appointment as she didn't want to turn it off.

And not that anyone cares, but the Yankees were still going nowhere this year without Teixiera. The division is still going to be a dogfight between them, Sox, and Rays.

I think it's crazy-but not so crazy that I'm not glad the Yankees got him instead of Boston.Oh well-it's not my money. Actually this is the first I've heard-the news was brought by Mstar. I honestly wish he would have stayed with the Angels-and Manny with the Dodgers- or I kinda wish he had gone to his so called home team of Baltimore-and that's part of the problem with baseball that there was no way the Orioles would get him More reason for everyone to hate the Yankees, and I'm not going to argue- they still have to win on the field, whatever the salaries are. I still hold the late 90's Yankees in my heart-I don't know what these guys are yet. In other news-the MLB network starts in a week. My cable company amazingly is carrying it and I hope yours is too. I still can't get used to turning to channel 429, though. We know there will be ample Yankee, Bosox, Cubs, and Mets coverage. Here's a prayer to the baseball gods that they don't forget about the Royals, Pirates, Mariners etc.

That cartoon is indeed wonderful, and was in some ways years ahead of it's time. The overall state of animation at the time was grim. Not much from Disney, the worst tv cartoons ever, and glimpses of goodness like the one above.

always liked that shaver sled. Is it just me-seems like products like Norelco, detergents, soap, aspirin etc aren't advertised on tv much anymore. most ads seem to be technology related. me- I like a good old aspirin commercial with the cartoon hammer hitting the brain.

here's a group some , I'm thinking Mstar for sure, would find interesting. baseballreliquary.org They're based out my way, and are devoted to all the aspects of baseball that aren't always covered in by the mainstream. There traveling displays include oddball items such as an actual hot dog partially eaten by Babe Ruth. I 've attended some gatherings in pasadena, including a very interesting talk by Jim Bouton. Just check out the website.

I can't even begin to relate or make sense of the money involved for these players, and fervently wish there was some kind of brake to it all. As far as the Yankee pitchers-last year they passed on Santana, thinking all their young arms were going to deliver. 2 out of 3 were busts. This year they're breaking the bank instead. There are bad expensive players (Pavano, Giambi, frankly Arod), but I don't see how Sabathia and Burnett are going to hurt the staff.

Well, I remember him coming to live with us for awhile during that wow year. No explanation-he was just there, and mind your own business. He stayed a week or two, then was gone. I never knew if he went home, or back to his wow 'family', or what. It was kinda weird, but I was used to weird by then, and rolled with the flow.

Just saw the 'hanging sox' logo. It's pretty neat-but on their caps ??!! OK, I'm an old fogey traditionalist who thinks there are some teams that shouldn't mess with the uniform. Yankees, Red ( definately not White) Sox, Dodgers, Giants, have all kept the uniforms pretty much intact, and I admit I like it that way. If the fans around Boston like it, though, then so be it.
-
That's a fair and well reasoned analysis (Mstar's , I mean-I don't agree with a lot of Bill James 'abstract'-I'm sure Furcal for instance, is statistically a far superior fielder, but I'll still take Derek any day-maybe I'm naive-but faithful). I agree with much of Mstar's comments, and could argue some of it, but don't really feel a need to. I'll be the first to say the Yankees need to get younger and more athletic.

I agree that the price for Lowe is nutty, though I'm not sure why the Dodgers didn't want to keep him. He can be lousy to unhittable on any given day-but he does have more good days than bad. Plus, he's always healthy, which I can't say for many pitchers. I'm not sure I agree with the slamming of the infield, though I know Mstar is in the trash Derek Jeter's ability camp. Last I looked Arod , and Cano were pretty good fielders. I don't know who's on first, but who knows,it might still be Tiexiera. ( part of me would like to see the Nationals get him. At least there 'd be one player I've heard of when they come to town. What I'd most like to see is Tiex stay with the Angels, and Manny with the Dodgers-both prospects unlikely). I will also admit that Jeter has never had a lot of range, and probably less now, but there's no team that wouldn't jump cartwheels to have him.

It's more of realization that they need pitching, and going after it with all the money they can. My personal wish is that baseball had a salary cap, but that will never happen. I won't even try to explain why the Yankees are in a different stratosphere-mostly not in a good way-than most teams. Any other team would be considered a success with 6 world series, 4 rings, and 14 playoff appearances since the mid 90's. With the Yankees, they're 'failures' because they haven't won the series since 2000. Horrors ! It's a monster that's not going away. Amid all that, they put together one of my all time favorite teams of non 'superstars' and 'good guys' in the 90's that won 4 , and almost 5 world series. Recapturing that 'magic' is what I'd like to see, but they're a far way from that. I still find it interesting that besides the 90's, my most passionate Yankee years were the late 60's Horace Clarke, cellar dwelling Yankees. It was fun to watch that team slowly come together. It was a different world back then. I'm now reading that Texiara may command close to 200 million, whoever gets him, but so long as it's not the Yankees it's no big deal.

Thanks for the retrosheet tip. I'll be spending time there. Clearly my memory is fuzzy somewhere. When I have the time, I'm going to figure out where. Sept 3 seems a bit early to clinch a pennant to me, but maybe not. For some reason the score 8-3 sticks in my mind, but that was also the score of a memorable little league game I played, so it may be mixed in my head. I kept a scrapbook as a kid, and cut out the newspaper accounts, but that book is lost to the ages. Sabbathia wants to go to the Dodgers, according to the LA Times. Colletti isn't biting so far. I guess he figures they don't need Manny and CC, when they have Andruw Jones and Brett Tomko. I think he's so shell shocked from throwing big money at bad players, that he doesn't know when a gift is dropped in his lap. With Manny and CC, the Dodgers would destroy the weak NL west, and they can afford both of them. Go figure. I can't.

The first time I went to Yankee Stadium was in 1963. My parents broke down and finally brought me to a game. Box seats were 3.50, and that was way too extravagant for my parents. We 'settled' for 'reserve ' seats that were still on the first level, and just off home plate. Kind of remarkable that my mother could score seats that good by just sending away and requesting them. By the way, it was a September game, and the Yankees clinched the pennant against the Senators that day.The score was 8-3 if memory serves.

IMDB is way out of whack. I'm surprised that they have as much information as they do. I've stopped being concerned about it, but thanks for noticing.

I don't know where he is now, but I sure remember him when. We were wow's at the same time in California, though in separate parts of the big city.
