  1. A guy started coming to my fellowship once, who was appalled at seeing a mother take a wooden spoon to her kids. One day, he picked up a wooden spoon at a garage sale across the street from her house, and chased her up and down the driveway, hitting her with it, asking how she liked it. He, of course, had much more common sense than the rest of the way indoctrinated group.
  2. I've made it back east most years since moving out here-ideally in October, but more often at Thanksgiving, when Autumn is pretty much done. The peak of Fall in New England is really the most beautiful place on Earth, and I miss it more every year. It was all NY growing up, mainly due to the NY TV stations, and the commuters. I did pick up Red Sox games on the New Haven station, but they only seemed to air about 10 a year. The friendly voice of Phil Rizzuto , and the neighborhood buzz on what Mantle did that day,was constant. Good luck to you too. I may be cranky soon myself. There's always the Angels looming out there too, though the Sox seem to have their number. The Yankees sure don't.
  3. well, of course, Yankee fans are nervous, because they've tanked in the last 4 playoffs. That's the fans. I don't think the team is nervous at all. I said (yeah, I'm so smart-but I still said) in the beginning of the season that Tex, CC, and Burnett were different than other overpriced free agents, and I think it's mostly turned out to be true. Tex has transformed the infield, and CC has certainly produced. I even think Arod may break the playoff jinx, as the weight isn't on him as much, and he seems , dare I say, more of a team player than ever before. The Yankees may still lose, but it won't be because the team is put together wrong. I'm liking their chances from here, but baseball is always 'chance' to a degree. Southern Connecticut is my neck of the woods, though it looks like I won't be getting back this year. sigh. I grew up in Stratford, and my brothers live in Southbury, and Easton. As happy as I am out here, I always long for the Autumn and Spring in Ct (not so much the humid summer, and endless winter).
  4. I'm useless when it comes to Voyager, DS9, Enterprise, and only moderately competent with Next Generation, mainly because I've never re watched, and re watched, and re watched those series like TOS. They're not engrained in my brain the same way. I don't have new quotes right now , either.
  5. I just saw that the Dodgers play the Pirates AGAIN today, so I may have spoke too soon. A 4 game series ending on a Monday-that's some weird scheduling. Sometimes I think baseball would just as soon skip the east-west coast games. It's pretty funny to see the Dodgers play the Mets in May-only to realize that's the last time they'll be around this year. (still the Yankees made 3 trips west this year-in late September even-I don't understand scheduling). IMO, interleague games have had their use, and there's not much reason for them. I'd rather see a more balanced schedule , where teams play more than 6 times a year. Meanwhile, I'm still enjoying the Yankees east title, but am more than aware that it may all crumble in the first round.
  6. A foliage drive in New England sounds better than anything to me-something I truly miss. It's also something you can rely on, a ball teams fortunes are completely out of our hands. Then I'm reading of a 4th grade kid in Syracuse who wore a Yankee shirt to class. The teacher, a Sox fan, made him turn it inside out, and he was teased all day for it. I remember elementary school teasing all too well. Seems like the teacher cares more about his emotions as a fan, than he does about the lives of the kids he's being entrusted with. On a west coast note, the Dodgers failed to clinch the west against the 'lowly' Pirates. The bright spot there is that means Vin Scully will be on hand to announce the game when ( if ? ) they do. Vin , being in his 80's, does not make the east coast swings any more, and I can assure you the substitute announcers are making sure you miss him.
  7. Well, I for one was pleased with the Yankees this weekend. Of course, come the playoffs, who the heck knows. For one day at least, it feels like old times.
  8. I've recently had a peek at that way corps site, and I can only thank God with every fiber of my being, that I never entered the 10th corps as once planned.I only was exposed to one corner, and a hard core faction at that, that still seems to be 'living the dream', ( as well as spouting the same ultra right wing, Obama hating rhetoric that one finds 24 hours a day on radio and fox news). I'm SO thankful I'm not under their iron thumbs anymore, and that as deep as I dove into the way pool, I never swam in that reek.
  9. I have no problems with home team pride. I'm allowed pride in my team as well, even though I'm thousands of miles away. I'm just not into all the back and forth in a heated playoff series this year. If your team wins, you'll be of course high fiving each other-if mine wins, I'll be high fiving the air in here. All I know is somebody will be happy, and somebody won't. Of course, the Angels or Tigers are still out there too. With my 'transplant' home team, the Dodgers, there certainly is a lot more than Ethier-mostly excellent pitching, and Torre calmly steering the team through it's ups and downs. Ever since the drug thing, Manny has been less of a presence here, and kind of plays like the airs been let out of him much of the time.
  10. hmmm I always thought Life>-Baseball>-Yankees I really may sit out the playoffs here. It's become a Sox board because more Sox fans are represented , which seems to have driven away the Rangers, Dbacks, Cardinals, etc fans that used to be regulars. There's nothing wrong with that. It is what it is. I'm scratching my head over the 1860's rule that says "runners may be put out on a foul ball that has gone back to the pitcher". I like the Clodbusters otherwise.
  11. I'm not sure if I remember that, but I do remember them sending Way Productions around the country to hold special meetings to drum up money for the joint. Of course, that was to be after you've abs'ed. All their millions, and they were still shaking down the minimum wage twig members. After years of dumping on religions that build big structures, instead of the Godly home fellowships-NOW there was an exception with this place-and we STILL had to pay for it.
  12. just checking in on the Red Sox board
  13. Thanks for that information. I go pretty far back with the family I asked about, and I am sorry, but not shocked, to hear about it.
  14. Jeff, would you happen to know if Mark Fr*nt*##k was connected to that group ?
  15. yes it is -the good Abbott and Costello movie
  16. ok- here's more "Chick-do you know what happens when you meet Dracula in the woods ?" " I'll bite" "No-you have to wait in line. But I've made up my mind-you can definetaly have Sandra."
  17. ok-2 liines "Chick-do you believe me NOW ?" "Pardon me, have you seen Chick Gray or Wilbur Young ?" "Seen 'em. I don't even KNOW them."
  18. Belushi getting worked up in 'Animal House' new one; "Chick, do you believe me NOW ?"
  19. Best looking Yankee to me has always been Yogi Berra.
  20. Derek Jeter just tied Lou Gehrig for most hits by any Yankee -ever. When you think about who's on that list (Ruth, DiMaggio, Mantle, Berra,...) that's pretty impressive. Of course, Ruth was a pitcher first , and played for the Sox for years, DimaG lost 3 years to WW11, and Mantle was injury ridden his whole career-but I'm still impressed with the accomplishment. I'm more impressed with the way he's conducted himself through the years. The Derek Jeter of 2009, plays with the same focus and consistency as he did in 1996. And has managed to be in the spotlight without controversy through his career. That the Rays applauded him during the game , is a testament to the respect shown him by his peers. So now watch his name surface on that infamous drug list, and shatter everything I just said. I really don't think it will, but who knows anymore. Please, let me believe in SOMETHING good.
  21. "Love Me Like a Rock"-or whatever that Paul Simon song id called
  22. "Everybody Loves Raymond"- I don't have a new one on hand at the moment , though.
  23. I just googled 'Roger Owens+LA Times article', and today's paper was the first to come up That youtube link, and the other youtube's of Roger are great. They give a pretty good picture why I love that section of Dodger Stadium best.
  24. Giving Manny time off sounds good to me. Juan Pierre, who'd be starting on any other team, is as motivated a player as I've ever seen, and delivers every game he's in. A nice article in the LA Times today about Roger the Peanut guy. He's been tossing peanuts since the Dodgers were in the Coliseum ! He obviously wears a rug, but still looks years younger, and never misses a game. He patrols the loge area where I usually sit, and it's as comforting as Vin Scully, and Tommy Lasorda, to watch Roger toss peanuts behind his back across 20 rows, and banter with the regulars who have known him for years. The guy is so popular , Johnny Carson had him on in the 70's a couple of times. I have no idea if he's been able to make much money as a 'celebrity'-but he's still pushing peanuts as hard as anyone. It just occurred to me that he should be in the 'Shrine of the Eternals', at the Baseball Reliquary. I might just have to campaign for that.
  25. I chuckle at Manny in the field also, though it drives my wife nuts- I'm not chuckling at his lack of hitting-I still figure it's just a late season Manny nap, but ever since the drug thing he hasn't been the same-I'll not speculate further on what that may mean I also don't get the Dodgers getting Jim Thome-he can't play in the field, and I don't know how many home runs he's got left pinch hitting twice a week. Maybe they figure he'll DH in the world series, and pop a few in homer friendly Yankee Stadium-and how many 'ifs' have to come to pass for that ? There are some awfully strong teams competing for the series. All of the talk centers on the Yanks and Sox, and as usual the Angels are all but ignored-and don't forget about Texas, and Detroit could Schilling get elected on the strength of his pitching heroics ? I sincerely hope the good people of Mass aren't that wacky.
