I still glimpse the magic at times. I was pretty giddy with the world series this year, though I've never been one of those Yankees fans that think they have to win every year. My most passionate fan years were when the Yankees were the worst team in baseball in the late 60's, but I loved them anyway. It took commitment to love Jake Gibbs. I had the same passion when I was 11. Baseball was hugely important, and I knew every stat.I don't need to detail the ways the game has changed, along with our age. The Ken Burns series is a work of art.

I watched the '65 series today, too. What a parade of great players, with Vin announcing ! Why does it all not seem as magical these days-except for Vin-who's still going strong.

sounds like a Rowan and Martin exchange, but I'm just guessing.
-
It all sounds like W &U, except for the avoiding arguments by welcoming other's opinions, and admitting your own mistakes. There were NO mistakes in way world, and no one's opinions but their own mattered.

.... He passed his glass eye around ?! He passed his friggin GLASS EYE around ???!!!!! I think I'm going to be sick. Did he pop it out of his head in front of you ? What possible reason could there by for this ?

In my opinion, there were few concepts more condescending and patronizing than 'undershepherding'. The way was hardly alone among religious groups in this form of indoctrination. People were not respected for themselves, and all that made them special, just being who they are. People were regarded as lesser beings, not to be fully accepted, trusted, or respected, until they've bought into the program, and are thinking the 'correct' way, and conducting themselves in the correct manner. In the way it was called' growing in the word', but too often it was learning how to master the stifling lifestyle. I'm not saying there isn't a place, or a merit, in reaching out, guiding, instructing, and being there for people, but I'll pass on the way method.

Melissa Scott- just my 2 cents here. The widow of Gene Scott, IMO a maniacal cult leader who peaked in the 90's with a very entertaining TV 'ministry'. He was another one knew the word better than anyone, and was satirized on SNL with his confusing blackboard scrawls that were impossible to follow or de cipher. When he wasn't on stage, he was sitting in a chair smoking a cigar in an extreme close up, while he ranted to the audience in a manner that would rival VP or Martindale on a good day. He'd rake his hardest workers over the coals and make them love it. He'd berate his followers at home because they weren't giving enough, then order you to GET ON THE PHONE and GIVE. While you were calling in to give, they'd show the good Dr on his ranch, often bicycling or horseback riding with a couple hot young women in revealing clothes. These were interchangeable, and one wondered where this harem came from. One attractive young woman would sing on his tv services. This was Melissa, and he eventually married her. When he died, it was similar to the way when VP died, and Melissa stepped in to take his place. In my opinion she's the worst teacher I've ever heard. She desperately tries to come off with the same authority and no nonsense vibe that Gene Scott did, but she's not able to pull it off. Her blackboard scrawls aren't as crazy as her husband's were, but to me they're just as indecipherable. She is very intelligent, and she loves to break down words to their origins and usages, and it's like one of those endless way teachings that seemed to go on forever. Of course that's my opinion. Maybe others find her riveting. Gene Scott's church still is on TV, but much like the way, it lost it's 'charm' when the leader died.

Of course I understand that Shell- I wasn't worried about sending the wrong signal, and I'm sure you didn't take it that way. If there's one way term I'll never shake from my brain it's "the love of God in the renewed mind, in manifestation'. I just don't know what it means. lol Best to you and Jeff.

Happy Birthday, Rocky. Facebook is fine, but it's ok to go to 2 churches at the same time.
-
Well, that was an eye opening evening. At the moment I don't know what to say, except that I love you, Shell.

I'm moping over a missed opportunity. I'm tied up all day yesterday, turn on the car radio, where they're promoting an event at Angels Stadium. Bring in a toy, and you get 5 swings at home plate. 2 toys gets you 10 swings. If I had known, I'd have been there just to experience batting in a major league stadium. I doubt I could reach the rocks in center field though. I've yet to figure out the thinking behind that.

I was so scared and tongue tied I can't remember. What surprised me over time was how well I learned to speak publicly, and became a pretty good teacher of that stuff. At least that's what I'd often been told at the time. I couldn't , and wouldn't want to do it again for anything, but it did help me to develop skills I had no idea were there. That I wasn't believing half of what I was 'teaching' is another topic.

The best story of the night is Joe Girardi, driving home at 2:30 am after celebrating, stopping to aid a woman who just crashed her car, on what the papers call a very dangerous section of the highway. He gets out of his car, stays with the woman, while flagging down a cop. A person's character has much to do with what you do when no one is watching, and my estimation of Joe Girardi just went way up.

yeah-where the heck is everyone! I don't see Posada making the hall. A way outside chance for Petitte. Jeter and Rivera are first ballots.

I admit I'm tempted to gush-but I really don't want to 'rub it in', and I figure no one wants to hear me 'gloat' -if that's what it is. you hit the nail on the head- it is reinvigorating and I am basking in the child like joy, just enjoying it. And I am glad that you and your fellow Sox fans can speak from experience. I hope Cubs fans finally get their turn soon. The new stadium is now broken in. Funny, the balls weren't flying into the seats like in the beginning of the year. I don't recall blowhards McCarver and Buck hardly mentioning it, and they love to beat any thought to death. The Yankees 'bookended' the decade with championships, which is nice ( and I won't have to endure the endless articles referring to the Yankees-who haven't won since 2000). I felt good for the 'old guard' Jeter, Rivera, Pettite, Posada-oh and Joe Girardi, who also caught on the 90's teams. I mainly felt good for the 12 year old fan in me-it's nice to let that guy enjoy himself now and then. I'm in the minority here-but it feels good to have the World Champion New York Yankees back.

this one feels real good......

and a base hit in the second inning averts a pitcher's no- hitter. the scary thing is it was probably written in complete seriousness.
-
Fox (and Tim McCarver) will beat any story to death. McCarver loves to say something, then say it again, then say it 5 more times just in case you didn't hear it the first 10 times. Where's Vin Scully when you need him. Hitters on both sides have seemed off. I don't think that will last. I'm not quite at the point of eating my couch. First 2 games seemed strange to me for reasons I can't explain.
-
2 games in and it's been an awful lot of great pitching. I think it will change as they get deeper into their rotations and bullpens. I'm just glad Cliff Lee can't pitch 4 games. Right now he's as unhittable a pitcher as I've ever seen. Unfortunately, Mariano can't pitch 2 innings every night. I'm sure Cleveland fans enjoyed game 1-'there's Cliff and CC-didn't we used to have them BOTH? ' The way things were starting to shape up, I'm satisfied the Yankees squeaked out one win before heading to Philly. Now I'm hoping they come back to the Bronx.

Sad. I would have thought him to ultimately have more sense, but then I knew him well a long time ago, when we were thick in way world. Like with many that I knew who were in the corps, there was a point where I couldn't relate to the narrow vision and lock step mind set. Still, he and his wife were gracious and giving with me at the time, and I find it all quite sad. At least I'll know not to throw any more money that way, should the request come again.
-
You do know, Jeff, since you've referred to him in previous posts. His initials are MF, and what you told me didn't sound encouraging.

Yeah , I was asked to help keep the camp going, though it came in more of a personal plea. I had no interest in supporting any off shoot, or religious org of any kind, but I did have a history with my friend that included times when he was very generous , and giving when I had been in need. I gave what I could based on that, though I knew it was going to keep him 'employed' at that facility. From what I've learned since then, I would have been doing him a favor by not doing so, and I would love to hear that he and his family have moved on from all that.
-
I know next to nothing about the group, except that an old friend was way too involved with it, and asked me to help him (them ?) out financially about 10 years ago.I forget the exact year. At the time , my friend was still touting Wierwille as much as ever, and I wonder if this Barnard chap hadn't gone off the deep end yet.

"Married with Children" ?

yeah-there will be brawls, though I like to think the vast majority of fans in both cities just want to watch the game, it only takes a few idiots -and both cities have some idiots. If I saw fights in laid back LA over a meaningless game in May, then a WS game in freezing Philly or NY between lickered up idiots is a certainty. I wonder what Philly fans were like in 1950-the last time the 2 teams met in the series ? LA is now distracted by the divorce between Dodgers owner Frank McCourt and his wife-who wants to buy him out and run the team herself. She's demanding among other things, about 500 grand a MONTH to live in the style she's accustomed to.They already own at least 4 huge houses in Malibu and LA, which I'll assume they'll divide. This is going to be an ugly winter for the Dodgers. The only positive I can see is it stalls McCourts plans to build a 'Dodgerville' of restaurants and shops behind the stadium, and condos in the Dodger parking lot. On a side note, I had some awesome pancakes , with the great syrup Mstar sent from New England the other day. That's some good eating, and a reminder of 'home'.
