Police departments feel the same conflict & catch-22. They are constantly refining their chase procedures looking for the balance between enforcement & safety. It's a difficult problem and it won't be solved. Refined, improved: yes. Solved: no.

mj, I don't get what post you're replying to . You sound pretty miffed at the idea of God's sovereignty. Might you be misrepresenting the position of 'predestinationists' just a wee bit? Or, you could take it to Doctrinal & expound on all teh Bible says concerning "free will". Hint: T'ain't much 'tall.

x10 has a point that applies here in the broad sense. When I entered the program it was with the highest idealism. Although I was quickly disabused of that notion, I retained a certain enthusiasm, thinking I was there to do the work of God. But after our disastrous final year, I ws deeply disillusioned and pretty mad about the program. I consider a mark of growth that God has managed to use those experiences for my good & growth. There is nothing too low & debased that God cannot turn it to his own use & purposes.

Our former pediatrician has become an international authority on childhood autism & vaccines. She now specializes in unique treatment regimens for autism. I googled her name and found a bunch of things. She has a book, too. Stephanie's book

My wife came running into the room and asked if Jeff Wallace was the man we knew from the Mississippi coast. I said yeah. "Well he's on Dateline!" It was the story of a boating mishap while Jeff was out in the Gulf fishing with his sons. He managed to get them on top of the hull of the overturned boat, but he couldn't get up there himself. He made a fateful decision to part from them so he could swim to a nearby island & fetch help. The young boys begged him not to go. The current swept him past the island. The boys were spotted by a foreign oceangoing freighter in the middle of the night. Quite miraculous. But the CG couldn't find Jeff, even after searching all night. He treaded water with a life preserver all night...and he only has use of one lung. They figured he was a goner. But they spotted him the next day. Neat story. I think Jeff & Clarice (who was also featured on the show) were in one of the Corps if memory serves me. Based on what Jeff says, he still "believes" the "truth". Great story and upifting.

--> Interesting mix of hubris & exaggerated sense of self-importance.

I looked the stuff over. The name was vaguely familiar to me. Never Way, though there is the most tenuous tangential connection: They were involved in Calvary Chapel, which was founded by the "other" founder of House of Acts besides Doop & Heefner.

My advice is that if you want to get lost or abducted, do it in Utah.

For the most part, the high incidence of Orthodox Judaism & Islam comes from Way influence...the teaching that Jesus is not God, did not pre-exist, etc. That, combined with holding the Bible to be authoritative.

Interpretation of Rom. 7...literal or allegorical?
TheEvan replied to TheEvan's topic in Doctrinal: Exploring the Bible
I'll go along with that CM...as a secondary interpretation. I think most of Paul's writings in particular, as well as the rest of the Bible, stand up well to peeling away layers of meaning. Still there is a primary meaning that is part of the long argument Paul is making. The major point of Romans is to establish the particulars of redemption, for the Jew first, and also for the Gentile. To that end, Paul engages in masterful strings of logic to convince the Jew, without offending, that the law is indeed fulfilled in christ. That the law is effective in convincing men of sin by illuminating its sinfulness and man's hopelessness in achieving the righteousness the law demanded. That, in a nutshell, is what chapter 7 seems to be saying. -

Interpretation of Rom. 7...literal or allegorical?
TheEvan replied to TheEvan's topic in Doctrinal: Exploring the Bible
Comcerning v.22 &23 Jerry, I agree. Thanks for that. One of the commentaries I read on this pointed out that v. 5 & 6 set the stage for 2 major discussions that follow: KJV Rom 7:5 For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death. 6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not [in] the oldness of the letter. v5 (when we were in the flesh...ie, the Law) is elucidated in v7-25 and v6 (serving in newness of spirit) is elucidated in 8:1-14. Good insight! -
Interpretation of Rom. 7...literal or allegorical?
TheEvan replied to TheEvan's topic in Doctrinal: Exploring the Bible
I agree. A great piece. He "fleshes out" (forgive the pun) what I was seeing about this. Cynic, I see the postmodern reference in the title header, but I fail to find a reference in the section you quoted. Did I miss something? -
I'm speaking of the section where Paul talks of knowing what to do but not doing it and knowing what not to do, yet doing it. Seems the apostle is speaking of his own personal struggle. Until I read the verse that says (roughly, from memory) 'for I was alive once without the law; but when the law came, sin revived, and I died." Which makes me think that Paul is further illustrating his assertions concerning the law vs. the spirit begun in ch.3 and picked up in earnest in ch. 6. This section in ch. 7 is often used as an illustration of the Christian's struggle with the sin nature. Yet, earlier chapters in Romans tells me that I no longer have a sin nature...that it died with Christ and that I am a new creature. Like many things in the Bible, I imagine there are layers of meaning beyond the primary. I'm leaning toward the primary meaning being an allegorical illustration of law/death vs. grace/life. Hmmmm?

I just heard from a Wayfer's mom that they are here in Baton Rouge & that theyy've been here awhile.

Cute, Long Gone. But nobody is claiming special treatment because they are genetically fundamentalist 'n "jes' can't he'p it". Gay activists are. Which is beside the point of this thread. Tis true that the term "gay" has become, among teenagers, a pejorative term for anything uncool, distasteful, etc. Teenage group dynamics already have enough cruelty as it is without adding another thing. I have no problem classifying homosexual acts as sin but I have a problem with treating homosexuals badly. I have a problem with treating anybody badly. Justice, rewards & punishment are God's business, not mine.

More evidence re: Calvin's 'dark side' ;)
TheEvan replied to GarthP2000's topic in Doctrinal: Exploring the Bible
Tzaia, just because Servetus himself was persecuted for being unitarian doesn't make it a yard stick for receiving persecution. Persecution happens because men are evil. More trinitarians have been on the receiving end of persecution than unitarians. By far. And for no other reason that there have always been far more of them. -
I fail to see how the length of his ministry as relevant to "all things that pertain unto life and godliness". It doesn't say, so who cares? Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know all the "lamb of the first year" stuff. Go ahead and squeeze it if you want, but you're presuming to make a biggie out of something the scriptures are otherwise silent on...

Galen, that full Bible course takes around two years to complete...if you work at it steadily. One of your entries, Gifts of the Spirit, is the original from which Wierwille adapted Foundational, Intermediate & Advanced. He's a much better speaker anyway, and his stories are riveting.

Personal Prophecy in the Way and Christian Educational Services (CES)
TheEvan replied to Clearwater's topic in About The Way
Galen (I think) wrote: Hmmm, not so sure about that, Galen. Balaam probably didn't have any scriptures, being a mystic for another religion altogether. Yet God used that very flawed instrument to bring forth some very beautiful words that stand in scripture to this day. I think when we start wilfully opening our mouth and presuming to speak for God, that's when trouble begins. Even if our doctrine is completely right. Jesus' "doctrine", he said, was to do the will of the Father. -
The Way's views on life/death before Adam

I've never heard a creationist (not that I'm acquainted with all of them) deny evolution as adaptation within species. They just deny evolution as an explanation for the origin of the species. Seems middle of the road enough to me. -
Raca Ages ("raca" appears in your KJV. Look it up. More silliness. Alfa can't help it.)

Definitions of 1-6 seem reasonable to me based on the verses Mark supplied. I'm wondering where 7 came from.
