Jim Crow? Because the prisoners were all black? Get used to it. Yes, hurry back to the midwest where it's closer to lily white. You'll feel more comfy. Fact is, black youths have turned to crime for a litany of reasons. FYI, (as of 2000) the US is 12.8% black, North Carolina 21.9%. Georgia is almost 30%, Louisiana 33%, Mississippi 36.8%. The Midwest? Depends on where you mean. Indiana 8.8%, Minnesota 4.1%, Nebraska 4.3% Here in Louisiana we have a large prison population, the largest per capita in the US, I've heard. I'm afraid Geo's suggestion wouldn't pare that down by much, or by nearly as much as other places, but that's a guess. For the most part, prisons are penal, not rehabilative (though our notorious Angola has made huge strides toward being truly rehabilative). Chain gangs seem like strong penal medicine. I'm all for it. My family is midwestern, I lived there for years. In my experience, racism lives everywhere, but it's stronger up there than 'down heah'.

siguessalot, you made me think, there. I'm wondering if speaking in tongues isn't a bit like the "Jesus Prayer" as practiced by many Eastern Orthodox christians, as taught by an anonymous russian mystic. It's not all that different from using a mantra to meditate, although the object may be a bit different. In either case, I think the aim is to live on what EF Schumacher called a "higher level of being".

I think it could be healthy. I've just gone through a fact-finding episode concerning my parents. It was a bad shock that was difficult to digest, but I'm feeling better now. A therapist (for you and me!) might be in order, especially if you suffer with emotional flare ups.

In this case, oldies is right, at least concerning what Mr. Wierwille taught. I can see how people could have taken it the way you remember, McCarroll, considering the emphasis placed on 'tawkin' in tongues' in Piffle. To me it matters not what kind of education Wierwille had. It does matter to me that he was deliberately deceptive concerning his "ThD", implying Pikes Peak was something nobler than a degree mill. Regardless his education, his teaching showed remarkable lack of scholarship, especially considering the claims to accuracy & Biblical research.

Interesting analysis, Sunesis. I think VP used these men in just the way you say. Whether that was his intention from the start it's hard to say, but I'll agree VP was ever the wolf. I read a book on the nascent Jesus movement & the "House of Acts", that rambling Victorian house in Novato that morphed into a Way phenomenon. Heefner & Doop are mentioned. Very interesting. Now whether the Jesus movement was a true revival or not (at least on the scale you present), I'm not sure. But I have no doubts those men were genuine & sincere.

Impeccable playing? Those clams get worse with each listening! But it is beautiful music and the recording is tops.

I participated in an informal guitar gathering this weekind. Saturday night was done in a small & pretty Presbyterian church. One of the guys brought recording equipment and posted a number I played. I hate to post it because of the memory lapse and all the nasty clams, but I'm posting it because the sound he came up with is so wonderful. A pair of mics on the guitar at around 12", then a pair about 8' away & 10' high for hall sound. No reverb, no processing. http://www.ehmz.org/ttt/VintonWeb/VintonPi...usic/Music.html Clcik on the mp3 link The piece is "At the Cradle" by Edvard Grieg, a number he wrote about his daughter, their only child, who died at age 2, I believe. Even with the clams I think you can hear the love, tenderness, intense longing to hold her once more & the sense of lingering...not wanting to let go just yet. This one piece grieg played for the rest of his life. And you thought Norwegians had no soul! Oh, the guitar is by Lucio Nunez of San Antonio. spruce top, ziricote back & sides

I'd vote for Glenn Beck, who we lost locally to Air America. He is a radio genius and terribly funny. He's pretty bad on TV though. I love his Bud commercial parodies "Real American A-holes". There must have been a consideration than pecuniary to put on AA here. It's ratings hover near 0, seriously.

And if you don't wash them off soon enough they will remove your paint.

Amsterdam is a great place. I recommend a good bus tour early on. Find one that piques for interest and just go. Then note what you want to go back and see more of. If you love museums, the Rijks Museum is an absolute must. And go see the countryside. It's beautiful. Personally I hate the red light district. They should have put it in the warehouse district. Instead they filled all those lovely old buildings with tacky neon and sample whores. Yuck. You'll love the coffee & the food. Find a cafe to sit and watch folks. if you're feeling athletic, jump on one of the "community" bicycles and go exploring. When you're done, just leave the bike in a public rack. Somebody else will use it. What a cool concept! Enjoy!

Nice post. Is your counselor a "Christian counselor"? Do you think that would make a difference?

For me it has to be jet-style packing.

Bingo again, Goey. Carefully crafted to elicit the desired response. The pretensiousness of it kills me. Only exceeded by the whole "Father in the Word" bit. Gack!

VPW: thief, plagiarist and con man. PFAL his MLM product

Unless Bible scholarship is no biggie to you. Look up the brouhaha that resulted when the late great popular historian Mr. Ambrose (Band of Brothers and so on) cited some works, credited them in the context but failed to properly footnote the citations. "Plagiarism, Plagiarism!" Your wierwille was an order of magnitute less scrupulous than those omissions, don't you think? -
Yeah Tom, that must have been her. She cleans up okay.

Congrats 'pipes. Our grad was home schooled as well. I'd call her well prepared. One local girl has been doing her high school at a local college. Plus she's been taling CLEP tests and the like. When she graduates from High School, she'll get her Bachelors degree that day...

Finally got it to play. That timeline really helps me better understand what I've seen. Parts of the Mississippi coast got over 30' of water (!) but it washed in and some hours later, washed out. It was more violent but less chronic than N.O. The animation illustrates that 90% of New Orleans went under water...then stayed that way upwards of 2 1/2 weeks!

Yeah, I'm proud. And she really is special. (I know, I know, ALL parents say that) Thanks ever'body

Nah, the house is quite repairable. The adjuster returns Tuesday afternoon for a 2 hour 'session'. Already, indications are that they'll be paying for quite a bit more than I'll find necessary to do. It's possible the ceiling and roof will settle neatly back into place when the support wall is demoed. If so, we'll have quite the nest egg left over, probably enough to do our driveway/carport/back yard project for which we have drawings and plans.

It was about 4pm, Nancy & I were in the next room, Christine was in the breakfast room addressing invitations for her upcoming home-school graduation ceremony. She was sitting in the spot where the car came in. she got up to get a snack and sat at the opposite end of the table to eat it. The pictured car was coming up the street at a good clip. A young man went through the stop sign at the side street, clipped her rear quarter and she careened into the house. We heard the impact and screeching and said "oh no, another wreck at our corner". Christine looked up from her snack to see a car bearing down on her at a high rate of speed. BLAM! The car managed to hit our main interior load bearing wall head on, so it took the brunt of the force. It raised the roof several inches besides all the other wacky stuff. Had she been over a foot, she would have run entirely through room where Christine was sitting. So we're very thankful! The driver, amazingly, wasn't seriously hurt. Possibly a broken rib. Her child wasn't in the car. The young man that tagged her is another home school kid who will be in the ceremony with Christine this Saturday. Word quickly went out that he was in a wreck and the car went into the house of the President of the home school organization (that's us). Toooo funny! He's a fine kid and this will simply grow his charcter. He's already been over to help with things. It was on the evening news. They mentioned where our daughter was sitting and the talking head said "thank the Good Lord she wasn't hurt" My sentiments precisely.

But it does mesh rather nicely with his thinly veiled admiration of Hitler...

Wait, wait! I remember something good! Somebody on WayDale took Geer's class and observed that he experienced a MIRACLE during that class, glowry! It cured him of his insomnia. Glow-ry!
