How can I tell if I have a Trojan horse or Worm?
Psalm 71 one replied to Psalm 71 one's topic in Computer Questions
I dunno if anybody will see this off-topic question here or if I'll need to start another thread. I asked a bunch of questions in Open forums about weird emails and this "somebody is researching your background" site. MrPmosh recommended I switch my browser to Mozilla. I'd like to. I still haven't done it cuz I might loose some stuff. Like will my favorites be saved? And did I understand that some places ya still have to use IE? and how much space is it gonna take? I have 529MB of space left? is that too little? Where do I learn about all this? -

*** Psalm71one sees Apple/Proverb and squeals in delight! *** So sorry yer still jealous of my lovely sackbutt, and the Psalms/Proverb thing!!!! ;)--> butchaknow, these things happen! LOL! And thanks for the advice about the spyware place, I will hit that site next. I will go ahead and run Adaware, too-- I was wondering if I should delete it since I had gotten Spybot. I figured it was redundant! I've been getting spam from someone that uses the same address, has an attachment, and gives a password in each email. (I don't open the mail, but Outlook Express opens it when i click on it to delete it) These emails started coming about the same time my debit/credit card # was used to make purchases I didn't authorize. -

Tom, you do know yer talkin to an airhead, don't you? :D--> What do you mean? Isn't that what I did when I went to the bank and told them these were unauthorized purchases? They had us fill out a form where we wrote down these particular charges and say they were not authorized by us. If I need to do anything else, lemme know! I have listed on a sheet of paper everything we have done, including names of people we spoke to, etc. WE are going into the police station to make the report, cuz we didn't want a police car shoing up in front of our house on Mother's Day! LOL! -

And my Isaac can do some NASTY farts--I'm sooo proud of him! :D--> ;)--> :P--> (We really do think if we bottle his gas and sold it to the miltary, we'd wipe out all our enemies!! haha!!) He's watching me type this and laughing! -
I posted this question "upstairs" in my thread about my credit card hacker/internet theft. How can I know if I have some sort of worm or trojan horse? Especially since I am hearing that Norton does not always catch these, nor Spybot, adaware, etc? I've run full scans and updates with both Norton and Spybot--including immunizing. I did that Friday night. I didn't run Adaware cuz I thought that is supposed to catch the same things Spybot did.

okay, I have changed my passwords, deleted my debit card from paypla's site and called PalPal to file a report with them. It really looks like this did not involve my paypal account. The guy even looked at all of the history of anytime anyone logged in to Paypal and it is all from my isp. Still, somehow someone got my debit card number and used it. I went to the site that these three purchses (The ones that went through) were made at. It looks like it's all software-type downloads, (The site is Fasthosts) so there will be no "ship to" address--I don't know if this hacker can be tracked-- anybody know? Maybe with the other pending purchases there was a ship to address, and they can be found that way? I don't have any of those written down anywhere, and will have to wait til the bank opens tomorrow to ask. I remember two of the purchases were for yahoomail. I thought about contacting Fasthosts and telling them an unauthorized purchase was made at their site using my card, but would that jepordize anything "official" people may need to do? One more question, and I am going to ask this down in the tech forum also. HELP! Oh, hubby's talking today now! LOL-- he gets so stressed that he crawls inside of himself--he's not mad at me about this, just mad! LOL -

Oh, and the bank never promised we'd get all the money back. They just said we PROBABLY would get it all back. This is a Credit Union and it was a debit card with a Visa thingy on it--as far as I understand, those are not insured like a regular credit card. So I just gave some stranger one week's pay--oh, NO PROBLEM!!! -

Groannnn, I've learned a lot in the last day. I did recieve an email that was from PayPal (I thought) and I was supposed to click on the link-- it said my registration was almost completed. I clicked on the link, got to the site and logged in and then I was "verified". I think this was also where I was to choose a security question and answer--two of them. (And if memory serves, I DID have to log in with member name and password). I can't find this email now, though. Weird huh? But maybe not, I had just changed all the passwords on any type of account I have, (Email, forums, etc) and used the same one on every one of them. (I've always had different ones and it was getting confusing to remember) Zix, it IS possible it was just someone picking up my visa/debitcard number anywhere. But this timing is too coincidental, and I am always careful with all my receipts. (my hubby now does the finances and he handles things very differently--since we have online banking, he doesn't keep receipts and throws them in the trash--no shredder. I've never been able to convince him to do differently). But I still think it was stolen via the internet--the timing is way too coincidental. WhiteDove, that is the way my checking accounts at this bank are set up. One for all our bills, having no access to a debit card in any way. The other one, where the debit card is linked, is household money, like groceries, etc--and now this Ebay purchase. It just so happens, that this time, I made the deposit, cuz my hubby was out of town on a business trip. I deposited his whole paycheck in that account, out of habit, cuz when I did the bills, we didn't have the second account yet. I sat up late last night, first reading at Ebay about all the ways spoof emails can come. Then I typed out a form telling them about this. I haven't recieved a response. Then I went to PayPal, read a little there, and started their form. By the time I finished the form, and went to send it, my log-in session had expired. I had to type it all out again. It happened again. Back to slow-type-hunt-and-peck. Then it rejected my form cuz it said I had something like an accent over and email, please check your letter and resubmit. I hadn't saved it. This time I typed it in Word. And pasted--and it rejected me. So, revise and submit, again and again. and again. ARRRRRGGGHHHHH! I felt like I HAD to submit that form last night, but I also was supposed to get up this morning at 6am because we were having a yard sale and I still needed to set up. I finally typed out a message with no punctuation marks asking for another way to contact them because I had tried at least 10 times and it rejected everything until I used NO PUNCTUATION! Now I am really sleepy, can't get a nap cuz we are supposed to go to a picnic at 4 pm. I'm just sick about this whole thing and my hubby isn't talking to me right now. And when we arrive at this picnic, we put our "Twig Faces" on-- isn't that sweet? --> :(--> -

Dmiller, yeah, I kinda think so! Exxie--that is sweet about your Mom getting the book for you and your brothers and sisters--it truly is a Mother's Day type of book, huh? and ya can't help but have to get it for your own kids after that! WhiteDove Isaac loves the armored pig! He says he wants to help in my flyovers now!! LOL! (Cept I have to read the thread we're doing flyovers in before he gets to see em! Yeah, my hubby tried to contact the mortgage company--it was after hours, so he's gonna have to wait til Monday. How we found out about it was that my hubby had just gotten home from a business trip and was updating our account via our online banking. I'd tild him I'd made a few purchases--grocery store, etc. He came downstairs and said he needed to talk to me-- and he didn't look too happy! He shows me $421 in purchases made online--YIKES!!! (He had printed out the page, so it showed where the purchses were made) I didn't recognize any of these. Mikey, I hadn't ever signed up for Paypal either cuz I wasn't too sure about em. When I did sign up, it had all sorts of secure-looking stuff, I THOUGHT it would be okay! (And HI! back! nice ta see yer post!! LOL!) Strange-Dude, people at the bank were saying PayPal is very secure too. They are suggesing the guy I purchased from either is crooked and gave my info to someone or maybe someone has hacked into his (the sellers) files. I did use this same debit card elsewhere last September when I made my homeschool curricula purchases, but this happened the day after my Ebay purchase! (And while at the bank, they checked into our account and there were 7 other purchases pending. I am going to Ebay and Palpal right after I post this. I do know I've gotten lots of email from ebay and paypla since I registered, maybe it's fake? What I'm worried about, is, do they have my street address now, too? (since ya have to give this stuff out on paypal) -
Well, I just made my first purchase from E-Bay this week. I had to register to pay via Pay-Pal, and my account has been hacked!!! We got the bank to close up the account. Eventually we should get the money that is charged against our account back, but in the meantime, we can't pay our mortgage, cuz part of that payment is tied up in that account!!!! ARRRGGGGHHHH!!! Could I have missed something and Pal-pal isn't as sucure as I thought? The seller has only been registered since March of this year-- do I report him? I had sent a question to the seller after I won the bid, and they responded, then later I got an email from them titled "Notification for 'questions on my order'" The message said " The message you sent on Tue, 4 May 2004 10:14:30 -0400 regarding "questions on my order" has been displayed by RXXX GXXXXXX" It had an attachment, and I wasn't thinking smart at the moment-- I opened it. It was a word notepad thingy and Norton didn't come up saying it had a virus. (I KNOW NOT TO open attachments from people I don't know! But I'd just purchased something from him and had sent an email, got a response-- ya know?) Now tonight I got an email with no subject line, no return addy and no message. Has this hacker gotten all my info? name, street address, email, etc?

Isaac thanks you all for the happy birthday wishes. Tom, we were rolling at the piggy pictures--HOW'D YOU GET AHOLD OF THOSE???? we thought no one would see those pictures!!! :D--> :D--> Dmiller, he is precious indeed! I lost two others after him then God gave me Ben--a whole 'nother miracle story, cuz I had started to miscarry him too, but God had mercy on us. Shellon, thanks for the quick wishes to Isaac! Dove, I agree, we ought give Tom a pig sloping, cept since he's not a pig we can't slope him--But I DO have a huge truck fulla icky sloppy yucky stuff, and I think Isaac should dump it!! (He really laughed hard at those pictures, though! Exxie, you are always so sweet, it seems from the times you've posted about him that you and your son are really close, too--I know he makes you proud! Snoballer and Glad, whaddya think we should name this HS basketball team? and just WHERE are we going to practice? Oh wait! we'll take turns going to each other's homes! haha! (It's kinda a drive, but it'll be fun when we get there, kids!) Imbus, thanks (I didn't read the "little man" part to him!! LOL! I just scrolled quickly--heeheehee!) Linda, thanks-- he ended up worth the wait! And MJ, your memory brought tears to my eyes-- I had gotten out the video of Isaac when he was a baby--and, realizing how quickly these 11 yrs have gone, I know the next 11 will go too quickly, too, and I'll be talking to an adult man with his own life, too. NOOOOOO! not too quickly!! Okay, for any of ya who can stand a tear-jerker sweet memory children's book, check out "Love You Forever" by Robert Munsch. I CANNOT read that book out loud to my children. I bought one copy for each, wrote a letter to each kid in the inside flap and put it in their keepsake boxes. I get each kid's out every year for their birthday, read it to myself, go through a box of kleenexes, and usually write another journal page to whichever boy's book I have at the moment. -
It was a Wednesday too! and Mother's day was gonna be the 9th of May that year. And I was hopin the little bugger would wait and make me a Mother ON Mother's Day, but he wouldn't wait! I went into labor on Monday, called the Dr, headed to the Hospital when the doc said to go, (my water had broken), and excitedly looked forward to holding my precious bundle in a few hours. And waited. And walked. And waited. And walked. And then it was Tuesday. And then it was Wednesday. And I BEGGED--CUT ME!!! :D--> :D--> :D--> sorry fer bein so crude! LOL! So my Isaac was born by C-section, and the ex-way group I was part of-- who were all health nuts, were so sad for me that I'd had to have invasive medicine to deliver my baby. (many had had THEIR babies at home with a midwife) Ah Well! He and I both lived! :D--> :P--> This has been a precious 11 years, Isaac has lived up to his name and brought us much laughter. He's gonna be a big guy-- he's already 5' and 100lbs! He's an all-around good kid, thoughtful, well-behaved (most the time! LOL!) I've had the priveledge to stay at home with him and homeschool him--and I am thankful for him! (Doesn't mean I don't need to take a break every once in awhile though!) I pray that I will be a good Mom to him and not make too many mistakes! And I thank God for giving him to me. (I had begun to think I would never have children after loosing 6 before him). Sorry for my ramblings, but I just peeked in on him after we'd had a fun birthday-all-day, and was thinkin through the sweet memories over the past 11 years.

What's with this? -- Dealing with email spam
Psalm 71 one replied to Psalm 71 one's topic in Computer Questions
Thanks, allaya, for your responses. I was feeling ....y when I posted! I think I will try to find out what is happening with the one account where emails are getting deleted. That bothers me--Pmosh, first thing I'm gonna do is change all my passwords, at least! Zix, I remember you or Steve! at one time had posted something about a kind of scam that sends out emails with some sort of subject line that makes it seem like ya know the sender, but is spam. So I started deleting anything and everything I didn't recognize, because if I understood correctly, some of those emails have a tracking device that lets the sender know that it is a "live" email addy because it was opened. (Did I understand that correctly?) If anyone has changed their email addy and then emailed me and didn't let me know about their new addy, they are getting deleted! Also, about the someone is researching your background thingy, I did kinda figure it was a way to get people to their site-- get their money for at least the minimal membership, and then not really be anything. Thanks for letting me know about clicking the opt-out link. But what a pain that I have to put up with their emails then! (I know, better that one, though, than 10 others that they sell my addy to). dmiller, I wish that were true for me. I have a hotmail account that is the one I use for an email addy when you have to give an email addy--I use it for e-magazines, also. That mailbox is always full of junk. (Trying to sell me anything from home loans to weenie-enlargers! Hmmmm! LOL!) I delete everything but the magazines I was expecting--and no, I don't open any of the others. I woulda thunk I would get less and less, but I go in there once a week and my mailbox is usually almost full! Pmosh, your post was very helpful (some of it went over my head-but don't tell anybody! LOL!) I have both ad-aware and spybot-- I run those about twice a month (The frequency I am online varies--sometimes it's over a week before I get back online, other times, every day and then I skip it again for another week) I had heard somewhere that anything by Microsoft (Msn, hotmail, Outlook and Internet Explorer has some sort of tracking thingy, which keeps track of the types of websites ya go to, and the subject lines of all your emails, and then ya get all this junkmail or pop-up ads related to your internet habits. Not sure if that is all true, but I've never liked Outlook, anyway! I wanted to use something different, but hadn't looked into it very far. What I have right now is, I guess, a dino-puter-It's five years old!! It has 128 RAM, a AMD-K7processor, has 16 GB of storage, and I thought I had a great machine. Cept, lately it glitches up a lot, and I get a "out of memory" pop-up screen fairly often and have to reboot! AKKKK! We have a friend who is a computer programmer and he is willing to rebuild this puter. I guess he would know how to put in that Spam Assasin, huh?, and that packet sniffer? I'll get the firewall installed then, also. I would gladly switch out of IE and Outlook, but I don't think I will be able to s'pain it well enough to convince my hubby to switch. Can I put my own email accounts on the Thunderbird email client at least? (He doesn't use this puter too often, but I know he'd want Outlook or outlook express for the email account that is the whole family's) -
I got an email in February from this website (Wordofmouth reasearch) saying someone is looking into my back ground. I went to this site, to read the message, and found out that the only way to read what the person had written, and to be able to respond privately (without giving my email addy), was to register for membership at $20 for 3 months or $30 for 6 months. Yeah, right, I may be an airhead, but I ain't toopid! :D--> But now, every 2 weeks or so, I get this "someone is researching your background" thingy. I can opt to no longer recieve their email notifications, but i don't think that would tell the "researcher" not to keep researching. Now, today, I got an email from some mhaggard, with a virus in it (My scanner caught it). I have this account on outlook, so the message was opened automatically because it was the last on the list. (I'm guessing Norton caught it before I got infected, even tho it was opened) The subject was titled "Fake", and the message says, "is that your name?" This email account does have some of my real name in it, and it is on the same server (myexcel), where I posted an email addy on my profile for this site, Psalm71one@myexcel.com Anyone who has read enough of my posts can eventually figure out my name. That is the only one I make public on this site, and this site is the only forum I am a member at. But that Psalm71one email account has been messed with a few times. (I find emails deleted frequently--I haven't deleted them and my hubby does not have access to that account-I don't think he even knows it exists) So what gives? I don't think I have made any enemies at this site--I stay away from any arguments. I read many controversial threads, have very strong opinions--may even start an angry response, but I don't post em. When I do post a rare serious post, I don't think I am abrasive. I don't know what someone would have against me. I'm not real trusting, so there aren't too many people I give my regular email account to, and even them, I have been careful about-- if I have any reservations about em, I follow my instincts. So what gives, mhaggard--or whoever you are?
-
Guess I better not go in one of those chat rooms and play, either, PJ I'd prolly get banned fer starting a food fight! BTW, I think your approach was hilarious!! Still LOL!!!!!

Dozer, check your private topics, I know someone who was there the same time you were.

Cindy and Steve, I'm one of those people who knows the rule, but was iggernant and didn't get my RSVP back to ya. I just sent an email to Cindy, and am sorry I didn't do this before. I won't be able to make it to the wedding, and will truly miss not getting to come. You two are such a great couple and being there to wish you the best would have been rewarding. I'm hoping I will get to go to Michigan this summer to my family reunion--that is in July-- I hope the invitation is still open to come see you all then, as I'll be less than a three hour drive away.

What are the most evil shows on TV?
Psalm 71 one replied to year2027's topic in Entertainment Archives
Sorry, Roy, I can't really answer the question directly because I don't watch much TV, (funniest video-type shows are my choice)and screen what my boys watch. My hubby used to watch a lot of the sit-coms, and I am VERY glad he doesn't anymore! My boys and hubby watch the while you were out shows and such. I'm glad that is what they watch, but heck, some of the commercials are AWFUL! I finally got it through all their heads to just mute the TV during commercials, and that cuts down actually watching them! I watched The Superbowl, including the commercials to get a flavor of what's going on one network TV-- HMMMMM! (I'll stick with my reading, thanks! LOL!) If it was really up to me, I would have a TV only for watching videos. And move to the mountains and escape! lol! Ad Astre Alia Porci "to the stars on the wings of a pig" -
What a pain! It figures that an ISP web storage wouldn't let ya use it to link to your stored images. I'm gonna check into the link ya gave and I may have questions as to how to use it. Thanks again, CW! Ad Astre Alia Porci "to the stars on the wings of a pig"

Thank you very much! That was really helpful in showing the actual dropdown menus and such! I'm glad to know it's okay to use the smilies-- I've seen some cute ones and wanted to take em, but wasn't sure if it was okay! Now I'm gonna have to upload em somewhere! I actually have 100MB of webspace with my internet carrier, but have never figured out how to use it. I used to use tripod, but they won't let me link from them anymore, so the only images I ever post anymore come directly from the funny pictures website I find them at.
