  1. its been awhile since my boys were this age, but I do recall quite a few girls calling in 7 and 8th grade, and ummmmm I can truthfully say they were not prude. the conversations they initiated with my two boys was enough to curl some of my hairs. I do recall however, my parents thinking our generation could never survive teenhood the way we looked , dressed and talked. Sideburns below mid-ear were the subject of my first civil disobedience action in highschool. We sat 240 seniors (half the class) at the entrance to lunchroom. Nobody could get to lunch that day, teachers included. We were successful in changing policy on the matter, but it was two more years before I could get the dang things to grow. ~HAP
  2. By the way, John was correct, David was extremely ill at that time. His recovery was possibly miraculous. I do have an e-mail for him but do not expect to see he or Mark anytime in the foreseeable. they both said to say hello. ~HAP
  3. Actually, the way I recall it, Walton wanted to sell american made products, but only if a company was willing to meet or beat the price that could be gotten from foreign made stuff. He would offer to guarantee a huge volume purchase, for the right price. Unfortunately, for some companies, that meant they would have to make an inferior product to what they had been producing in order to meet the price Walton was willing to pay. So much for the benefits of buying "american made" You might be interested in this recent experience by Snapper (lawn equipment). 4. I don't get it, this thread shoulda died a long time ago. I tried to stay away from it but it keeps coming back! Fact is, from WG's first post, I don't know how one coulda presumed that she would be taking offense at the comical remarks made concerning the poster. She went on the offensive against people twice in the first page, before anyone could ever know she was mistaking their jests at the poster as throwing eggs at her. Daddyhoundog joined in attacking people. I dunno, maybe WG had a previous issue with Satori? Is there a history here that got carried over from another thread? WG's was a very strange reaction to some very minor ribbing. When I first read Daddyhoundog's first post on the thread, I thought it was belittling in itself "I threw my PFAL stuff away" or something like that. It wasn't until later when he/she started to "defend" the long gone by-this-time WG's feelings that I understood his post wasn't meant that way. It is sad that feelings were hurt, it didn't need to happen, but then again, that is what happens when our emotions are so near the surface. I have boiled over myself a few times here, but never over a single thread, which is why I wondered about if there is a history behind this. It would be a shame if WG stayed away over what amounts to a few simple chiding remarks about a 25 year old POSTER of a class that is what 40 years old? There have been an equal amount of good wishes for her success, since then, and some even came from the targets of WG's and DaddyHoundog's venomous words ("blow off these insults from people who dont value courteousness and still have too much hatred to talk objectively about the old cult."- Lianne) towards the PEOPLE who posted on the thread. Attacks on people often breathes life into a thread. DH exacerbated the battle while trying to end it. Without that venom, the inanimate poster would have been sold on ebay long ago. Can this thread ever make it to the second page? I guess not if we keep responding to it. ~HAP

    robot bartender

Hey, I know there are those who would reverse the order of this, but its a joke dues and dudettes! With the President's speech tonight, I figured it was timely. ~HAP A man enters a bar and orders a drink. The bar has a robot bartender. The robot serves him a perfectly prepared cocktail, and then asks him, "What's your IQ?" The man replies "150" and the robot proceeds to make conversation about global warming factors, quantum physics and spirituality, environmental interconnectedness, string theory, nano-technology, and sexual proclivities. The customer is very impressed and thinks, "This is really cool." He decides to test the robot. He walks out of the bar, turns around, and comes back in for another drink. Again, the robot serves him the perfectly prepared drink and asks him, "What's your IQ?" The man responds, "about a 100." Immediately the robot starts talking, but this time, about football, NASCAR, baseball, super models, favorite fast foods, guns, and women's breasts. Really impressed, the man leaves the bar and decides to give the robot one more test. He heads out and returns, the robot serves him and asks, "What's your IQ?" The man replies, "Err, 50, I think." And the robot says... real slowly, "So... ya gonna vote for Bush again?"
  6. I saw a few pages back some mention of David W++ker having been ill awhile ago. I saw him tonight, and he seemed well, so I thought I would let you know. ~HAP

    Tax tips

Disclaimer: I am not a tax professional either, but I have been self employed since 1978. If you are NOT an employee for tax purposes, it may be wise to have a tax professional do your taxes this year, so you can see how things are handled. After this, you could possibly get by using one of the computer tax programs such as Turbotax or Taxcut. You might try it this year for that matter, those progs ask you lots of questions to make sure it understands your situation, and how yo8ur income was generated. See how it goes, but if you are uncomfortable, then go to a pro. The form you got probably says that the person who paid you is a Sole Proprietor, not "Member"? It simply means his business is not incorporated, and he does not have a partner, for a partnership. That is immaterial in regards to your tax obligations. Was this the only company that you did work for? Hoiw much supervision did they have over you? Some companies try to claim you are not an emplyoee, but the IRS definition is what counts. You can search their instructions on the internet. Even though you were paid on a commission basis, it does not in itself mean you were self employed. Did the companyyou work for withhold taxes? It would be on the form you got. If it is a W-2, then it is likely that you are an employee and they did withholding from your check. If it is a 1099 then the company considers you not an employee. and did not withhold. Did they withhold social security? Us "Selfs" take it in the shorts on that, since we pay the entire amount, not just half like when you are an employee. In any event, I would expect you should be able to deduct unreimbursed business related expenses such as advertising, insurance, office supplies, telephone, internet....the list is long. These things are calculated on Schedules C, D, SE if you are indeed self employed. I think it is on Schedule A if you are an employee, but I am not sure there. If these expenses were used to generate your income, they should be deductible. According to the book, that portion of your home whcih is "exclusively used for business" is calculated as a percentage of your total square footage of your residence. That percentage is then used to calculate the portion of mortgage/rent, taxes, utilities etc. that is deductible. You do not need to have customers come to your office, but generally must be your only place where you do your office work. Be careful here, "office in the home" is a common redflag to have your return looked at. Doesn't mean an audit necessarily, just a flag. Worth taking, if you qualify for it. If you kept records of mileage etc. on your vehicle for business, you might also deduct it. I guess we need more information to really point you in the right direction. ~HAP
  8. Exie- On most those pages, I can select the text I want, without the ads by highlighting it with my mouse, then I copy <Control C> and then paste <control V> into Word or Wordpad. Another way is to highlight what I want, and then tell my printer to print the "Selection only", if you know how to do that. There are likely other ways, but that works for me when I am in a hurry.
  9. Please don't get me wrong BagPipes. I enjoyed the anecdote, and loved your goofy friend. It was a classic. ~HAP
  10. Great story Bagpipes. I have all my phones listed on the Colorado and the National "Do Not Call" databeses. It works real well, at least fot the last two or three years. I get only one or two calls a year now for sales. You can register your numbers here: https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx At some point, I imagine that the companies will find a work-around of it, such as claiming they have some sort of business relationship with me due to me having inquired on the internet about them or someting, but so far that has not arisen. I am starting to get a few more calls for "surveys" now, which are exempt from the donotcall registry. Of course charities and political parties are also exempt. I have never bought or donated anything as the result of telephone solicitation, I do not ever plan to, and I will never sell my services that way. Pax, HAP
  11. thanks Apple- In this case there is absolutely no issue with leaving tracks. I am just trying to help here get the data/docs she needs. The computer and data is hers, in every aspect, legally and morally. From what I have read so far, the linux prog is safe for doing this, at least if the files are not encrypted. It seems that the most likely place to mess things up with it is if you use the other registry editing features of the program. Does that sound like a fair assessment? I guess my only reason for asking, is that I have put drives on another computer as a slave. Editing the registry is something that I have some trepidation about. I want to get the data the safest way possible, before I risk the possibility of making it irretrievable. Once I have the data, I will be making the computer usable for my friend, with or without the password protection. ~HAP
  12. Yes, I am told it is an XP machine. I am hoping that her problem is at the logon screen and that the files themselves are not encrypted. I am not sure if she knows for sure. thanks ckeer. I suppose I am being a little too cautious about using those linux progs. I haven't found anyone yet reporting messing things up, but since it is not my own machine and the files are not replaceable, I would like to try the safest way to get the data first. ~HAP
  13. Related question: I have a friend who needs to get some docs off a password protected computer. I'd prefer not to give details at least on an open thread, but trust me it is urgent, and legal and serious. I may refer her to the above links, but could the drive just be taken out, switched to a slave drive and put on another machine? Thus accessing the data that is needed? You can email me if you need more info. ~HAP
  14. Painful, simply painful to have watched. Panther fans must be feeling the same tonight. Congratulations to Pittsburgh and Seattle, clearly the better teams this day, across the board, every category of the game. HAP

    Question for Raf

I am not sure why you directed this to Raf, but assuming you mean THIS Esteban (born Stephen Paul): Esteban's road to popular CD performing artist was more than a little rocky. A car crash in 1980 left him nearly blind in one eye and with such extensive nerve damage to his hands that he was unable to perform for nearly a decade. In any event, blind or not, if he owns a car, it needs to be insured, whether he drives it or not himself. Insurance, at least in CO, follows the car, not the driver. ~HAP

    Live Chat

yeah Andy, come on down. Bells and whistles? there are no bells except for George Jetson coming into the room. Actually, all the sounds can be easily turned off if that is your preference. Ok, none of the other settings I talked of earlier work for me to keep from developing lag. It seems that after about 3 pages of the room, it gets to where I can type with my nose faster than the screen can keep up with me. Two things that seem to work. The most functional is to log out of chat and come back. time consuming but works for me. The other thing I am playing with, and it seems to do well if I remember it in time. If you type /clear it will clear your screen of all the past dialogue and this seems to help my lag considerably. I have to do this before I get a message that says: "A script in this movie is causing Macromedia Flash Player 8 to run slowly. If it continues to run your computer may become unresponsive. Do you want to abort the script? (Yes) (No)" I can click yes or no, doesn't matter, pretty soon after that I am frozen in the room. Hopefully I am the only one with this problem, and it could be time to switch over to my faster computer. whatever the script is in that movie, (must be one from that trivia game down there in the forums?) its scary, trying to abort my puter or something. dang leeburals are everywhere these days. ~HAP
  22. Steelers win, no they don't, Vanderjagt never misses at home, it will go to overtime, no it won't, he misses the field goal, STEELERS WIN! Now THAT was a roll coaster of a last 4 minutes. Of course the Broncos don't have a chance against Pittville Keep repeating that, Steeler fans, confession is 9 tenths of believing. It worked for the Patriots really well. ayuh. besides, we are only 3/4 of a mile more above sea level than you. You can still breath here fine, as long as you are on the bench, with the oxygen tanks. (wink) A bunch of good games this weekend, congrats to all the teams that made it out of the also ran pack. ~HAP
  23. 4 minutes to go 4th quarter, Little Blue Horsies pull within 3. they may pull it off yet. still, Go Broncos!
  24. start of second half, Pittsburgh 14, Indy 3. Looks like vaunted Indy has those lowly Steelers right.. ............. ............. where.... ............. they...... ............ want them!....... Go Steelers, we want a home game for the AFC Championship Broncos ruled, Patsies drooled ~HAP
